If I had a nickel for every time Link's Crossbow Training ended up screwing over a promising new Zelda game with a lot of cool concepts and passionate workers, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.
Seriously, this has to be the saddest cancelled game story I've heard in a long time. No "outside factors" ruining the pitch, just ridiculously stubborn higher ups refusing to move on from waggle-a-wolf. It stings but from Nintendo's perspective, I totally get it. There's no way that would fly at all. It's such a shame because the concept art is so badass and having it be like Shadow of the Colossus would've been amazing.

The reason being: despite his grand success and obvious intuition when it comes to making video games - Miyamoto only knows how to make a specific type of game, he has no clue how to make stuff outside of that wheel house, and he routinely shuts down good ideas because he personally doesn't see the merit.
Like, I love Zelda. It's my first love. But the more I learn about Miyamotos career the more I want to slap him and tell him to stop demoralizing workers. For every good idea he offers he's also suggested adding a gardening mini game to everything.
Like, the creators of Links Crossbow training wanted to add more action elements to the game, including bosses and narrative beats. Instead Miyamoto said that he game would do better as a pure spin off with little to no substance outside of being an arcade shooter. And now look at it. What a beloved, replayed, and remember game. Except it fucking isn't. It's shovel ware you're forced to buy if you want a Wii zapper.

Decades of work that Nintendo didn't have to do to make a good game. And Miyamoto was like, nah. Make Link shoot at pots. Put it on rails or make the level stationary 2/3rds of the time. Like bruh. Imagine Miyamoto giving that advice to an Activision room developing a new CoD. A company that's arguably gone insane, and they would laugh Miyamoto out of the room. The dude has his strengths. One thing about the Sheik game that I used to wonder about was them saying it takes place "in the bad ending of Ocarina of Time". The Downfall Timeline makes sense, but its existence wasn't confirmed until Hyrule Historia was published in 2011. It was something barely any fans even considered a concept at the time. So how would Retro have known about it? Did they get that info from Nintendo themselves?
The concept art for the game mentions a great flood. I think the "bad ending" they were talking about was actually the Adult Timeline with The Wind Waker, and the game was meant to take place between Ocarina of Time and The Wind Waker. And calling it a "bad ending" was a mistake on Sammy Hall's part, just as calling the male Sheikah "the last male Sheik" was.
Also, I believe this game and Skyward Sword both focusing on the origins of the Master Sword was probably a coincidence. If this was pitched to and supervised by SPD3, then no one on the Zelda Team would have likely ever heard about the Sheik game's story ideas.
Regardless, this was a great video! Thanks for digging up and sharing so much info on this canceled game. I'm looking forward to hearing about the other game.
(Side note, the "Gerudo have children with Hylian men" detail actually isn't new info. Ocarina of Time mentions that within the game itself. But this interview does go into more detail than the game does, like the "kidnapping men" part is new, for example.)

Actually the downfall timeline was theorized to exist before Hyrule Historia was published. Link to the Past has an event called "The Imprisoning War". It's an event where Ganondorf gained control of the Triforce, but was eventually stopped by the Knights of Hyrule and sealed by the Seven Sages. But once the whole Link reincarnation cycle is established, there being a time Ganon and Hyrule went to war without Link didn't really make sense. So the best solution was that the Imprisoning War is how Ganon was dealt with in a timeline where Link looses Ocarina of Time. Hyrule Historia really only confirmed theories that were popular and set down the details. But I do agree that it feels unlikely that the devs on Project X were building a game based on a fan theory. It makes more sense that the person DYKG talked to meant the adult Link timeline, because the Hero of Courage abandoning the world and it flooding is pretty bad.

It may have rated very well from critics but I *never* hear anyone talk about it outside of Dynasty Warrior circles. Which is especially surprising for a main series title. They should have gone with a battle system similar to Okami, using the wiimote to draw/cast spells. If they were planning on having horde battles and big single boss battles, it would make sense to have some spells that do AOE damage and other spells that work as a coup de grâce.

It's stories like this that makes me glad Nintendo can be a bit heavy handed when it comes to how their IP are presented.
A more action focused Zelda game staring Shiek? Awesome!
It's a wagglefest because some pencil pusher in charge of Retro but NOT in charge of actual development thinks that's somehow the future? Yeah no thanks.
For all the crap nintendo gets about sleeping on some of their IP, THIS is why. They only have so many developers internally in Japan, and the first party stuff outside of NCL doesn't always meet their high standards. Remember this the next time you wanna complain about them not releasing a new F-zero or whatever because they don't know what they can add to the formula.
In a different timeline Nintendo could be full of suits that don't care about making fun and unique gameplay and think they can get by on brand recognition alone.

the thing is that the heavy handedness is nothing more than an infuriating double standard.
like they have zero problems rehashing "A list" titles like mario, pokemon and more recently fire emblem & splatoon till the heat death of the universe but god forbid a "B or C list" titles like punch out, custom robo, star fox or F-zero get that same treatment.
a formula is a formula for a reason.

Is it one thought? Most 'A list' titles come out once or twice per console like you'd expect. Fire Emblem went from almost never seeing another release, localized at least, to a mainstay. Splatoon is a newer IP receiving it's 2nd sequel. Heck Animal Crossing was a weirdly popular niche until it saw a 2nd wind with New Leaf.
They do precisely the same thing pretty much every games company does, if sales don't meet expectations they assume "nobody wants this". Not knowing what to do with it is polite speak.

      @TheAufziehvogel 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

There was in fact much worse going on behind the scenes and I'm glad that such videos as this here are showing that not everything was gold they put out. There was a few years back this quote from one of the lead guys and he literally said in an interview how much he hated and despised Metroid Prime and that his company was limited to work on just these games for years. Yeah, the lead people behind Retro were pretty much douches and many things went downhill at Retro. Retro Studios undoubtable had a lot of talent, which is why they've had their talent land at high positions at Sony (namely Bluepoint Games), Microsoft (namely 343 Industries) and 3rd party developers. It is sad they lost all that talent instead of building it up and out on one hand however. If Retro Studios' talent was used more properly with their game development, we would get consistent releases from said studio. We've only really gotten 5 full games from them over the last 20 years (with 3 enhanced ports), the last of which came out almost 9 years ago in DKC Tropical Freeze. That blows.

I think if there were a Zelda spinoff starring her as Sheik, the thing to do would be to set it largely during the 7 year gap between the child and adult portions of Ocarina of Time. Have it start as soon as it would make sense after we see her and Impa fleeing the castle and include her training as a Sheikah and adopting the name Sheik. From there, whatever the actual gameplay was like, the story would be about her activities between the time Ganondorf formally took over Hyrule and when Link emerged from the Temple of Time as an adult, with some synch up going forward such as their meetings outside or near each temple before following her on her continued adventure after leaving Link to go to and deal with each temple. But that's just my opinion.

That would answer the question brought up, "if Zelda is the protagonist then what's Link doing?". Or if they want to do something with a new story, then how about this.
So when you beat WW you could play as Link but with the lobster shirt and it unlocked hero mode. What if they made a Zelda game, did the whole story with Link, but then the unlock for beating it would be playing as Sheik in different parts and you'd meet up with Link on the occasions you met up with Sheik in the original playthrough. Almost like a mirror playthrough but from a different perspective. Like what Resident Evil did in some of their games!

I would love to see more of this on researching and evaluating cancelled games with devs (just so I could see what happened with Kirby GCN). I'm actually more disappointed with the reveal of the gameplay description than the fact that it was cancelled, there were some speculation that Nintendo intentionally turned it down because they didn't want something that heavy as ethnic-based genocide in Zelda, much less a spinoff or fearing that Retro would take control of the franchise if the game sold well, fans were clamoring for a mature-themed game.

Dang, this’s actually the rare case where learning more about a cancelled/unreleased game makes it actually sound worse. Project X/Retro’s Zelda game being this mysterious, darker take on the Zelda universe where you play as Sheikah sounded amazing in concept, and the concept art posted online was genuinely impressive…but it sounds like what little they developed for the game itself was a hot mess, and it seemed to lack the same overarching vision or quality control that Retro’s other games like Metroid Prime or Donkey Kong Country Returns did.
Nonetheless, with Nintendo more willing to work with outside studios for the series nowadays and have them turn out great, such as with Hyrule Warriors games and Candence of Hyrule, a small part of me does want to see this idea revived again someday, or any Retro-developed Zelda game once they’ve finally finished work on Metroid Prime 4.

During the early Wii era (2005 to 2010) the idea of a simplified gameplay aimed to appease a wider and casual audience dominated the gaming industry, it took Dark souls (2011) to remind the devs that gamers actually enjoy a challenge and still "on rails" games dominated the scene for basically the entire PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii life cycle and to this day this simplified approach to gaming still lingers in the head of many devs who are desperately trying to push the mobile market.
Given the concept art this apocryphal Zelda game could have been huge, such a shame.

And now we have echoes of wisdom starring Zelda! I am so excited about that game- it has been long overdue. Finally Zelda gets a piece of that adventure pie and for once, Link can take a break in.. well.. wherever he’s trapped! 😅 I am also super excited about the game mechanic they are introducing- it looks really fun. Such a creative way of dealing with traditional combat which.. people might hate me for saying this.. but it has honestly stunted people’s imaginations with all that might be possible when it comes to creating an amazing, immersive gameplay.

This video was really, really fascinating. Thanks so much for all the hard work that went into investigating and reporting on this!

I'd like to suggest DYKG change their channel name to 'You Didn't Know Gaming', because no, there's no chance in goddamn hell that we knew some of this recent stuff!

Miyamoto held back so many Nintendo's studios and there IP's with his ideas on what he thinks games should be.

Whatever Project X could have been, it couldn't have been worse than a bottom line Zelda game like BotW.

I can understand why they axed it. Programming for Wii without the plus was a nightmare. And without Shiggy having his hands directly involved, he never would have given it the full green light.
