  • Seattle Police Chief Carmen Best is officially retiring Wednesday. Chief Best announced she was stepping down last month after nearly 30 years with the department.
The announcement came after weeks of protests in Seattle, and just hours after Seattle City Council voted to cut spending for the police department. The budget cuts could result in the loss of up to 100 police officers in the city, and Chief Best said she was not willing to lose members of her force.
Chief Best spoke with KING 5 on her last day as police chief and described her time as chief, what led up to her decision to retire, and her plans for the future.

The correct term is 'voted out of office'. They're not 'fired'. But I agree. The council and mayor seem to pander to the rioters. I can only hope that they're voted out, and never get hired in private industry.

Maybe she wanted to make sure all her retirement paperwork is in order before she lets loose in an interview? An anti-police mayor and council that allows their city to turn into a war zone while holding back any significant police response and this is all the chief has to say? I hope if she does make a statement or write a book down the road we get a bit more of a look at the situation behind the scenes because this certainly didn't provide anything.

I only saw this woman once before and I liked her. She is strong, good composure and handles stress and logic. This is rare. They lost someone good that night

Carmen Best - Answers In This Interview come across as too Political! I wish her all the Best in The Future. I was Disappointed to See Her Cave to The Protests and ABANDON a Police Precinct Just Like Mayor Frey In Minnesota. She allowed the National
Embarrassment known as CHAZ which was a disgrace and A Black Eye for The City. I would have Preferred to See Her Come to The Defense of The Fine Men and Women of The Police Department. I wish her all the Best but IT WAS TIME!

Chief Best resigning is a bad look for Mayor Jenny Durkan and the council members. They replaced Chief Best with another chief who fits their agenda.

Really sad. I'm here in California and I never knew who she was until these riots. She seems like a great woman and I gladly support her for her decision. Sad she is leaving but God speed for her. Hope she runs for mayor. I think she would have a good chance.

Considering the lack of state support, the political environment, I do not blame her one bit for stepping away from the position. There is zero shame in putting distance between the situation and her professional career and even the safety of her and her family. I wish her the very best in life.

Your mayor does nothing to keep the city safe. The mayor and city council members stripped you of your authority and this was your chance to be transparent and stand up for the men and women of Seattle PD.

Such a classy woman. Sad to see her leave but she was put in a no win situation and was being forced to make bad decisions because of the politics of the city council. She deserves better.
I would LOVE to see her run for public office. I think she would make a fantastic governor, senator, representative, or even a judge, I think. She has the right morals and she knows how to navigate tough political and social issues with grace and with class. She's a unifier. I think she could do alot of good to make Washington State work better. I'd vote for her if she ran for public office.
