    totally agree on these items:
    1. Fixed weight on the dumbells
    2. Stabilty from the hex type
    I learned the hard way... just pick a set with a weight you can do most excercises with, and then try to add every other month. I would even recommend if you have a little budget to start 10/15/20/25 pounds.

    • @deltalima6703
      @deltalima6703 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have
      5lbs. - this is a heavy weight for rotator cuff excersises, essential.
      30lbs - perfect for certain flys I do still.
      65lbs - perfect for bicep curls at the moment, bit light for shoulder press
      95lbs - moving into these for shoulder press, bit light for triceps pullovers, good for decline/bench press
      150 lbs. - rows, shrugs, moving into these for triceps pullovers.
      Thats a minimalist set, need to really know how to use them and the less you know the more you need.

    • @SAF4EVER

    Great reminder to lower the weight and focus on quality reps. One of the things that Sal said on mind pump was “make a lower weight feel heavier”. Paused reps, extra time under tension, slowing down eccentric, having a more explosive concentric, etc. all tools to shock the muscle and demand something from it it’s not accustomed to.

    • @cmdrfunk
      @cmdrfunk 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      "I'm more impressed by a perfect form turkish get up than a 700 lb deadlift done slightly imperfectly" Sal?

    • @meisdetermined
      @meisdetermined 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cmdrfunk Did he say that? I mean a 700 pound deadlift deserves some respect lol. But as we get older it becomes more and more important that we be able to get our butts off the ground lol. The Turkish get up definitely deserves more appreciation than it gets. We have to get out of that mindset that a higher number automatically makes us better. Not being broken down physically wins over achieving a “number” every day that ends in Y.

      Depends on your goal
      If you wanna look like an athlete who's ready for the beach
      Yes body weight exercises and light dumbbell exercises with a help you achieve that look
      But want to look a natural hercules, fitness isn't the right type of the training to achieve that look

    • @meisdetermined
      @meisdetermined 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@knightveg wasn’t saying go light at all. Just not going at 100% because that’s how you tear stuff up. Bodybuilders will lower the weight and hit that 15-20 rep range at 75-80%. Easier on the joints, good pump, etc. Never meant 20-30% lol. Although I heard tom platz did like 100 reps on squats (at 325 lbs?) to add variation to his leg training and his legs were tree trunks.

      Adjustables are not bad at all. Simple plate loaded ones are dirty cheap and give you the chance to easily scale on every exercise you do. Only downside is that you lose time switching plates but that's fine, you do it while you rest.

    I started out with Iron Master adjustable dumbbells in our Master Bedroom for about 18 months, which built a base strength. I then built a home gym in an Amish shed that is insulated, finished and heated/cooled. Now I powerlift for more serious strength. I still use the Iron Masters for all dumbbell weights over 50 pounds and have a set of 5 to 50 pound fixed dumbbells. If I had the space, I would have 5-100 pound dumbbells. I started with Iron Masters, because they are as durable as fixed dumbbells and felt the most like fixed dumbbells out of the options.

    • @terrencemartin2621

      I would go so far as to say deadlift is the exact opposite of a pull. A pull is typically moving into flexion against the load, rope face pull, pull-up, lat pull-down, bent over row. These are pulls. A deadlift is moving into extension under load, that is a push. Push-up, squat, split squat, hip thrust, and yes dead lift.

    If we're only going to get one set of dumbbells, should you start off with a 25, 30, 35, 40 or 45?

    • @deltalima6703
      @deltalima6703 ปีที่แล้ว

      Me? 30. But I know im going to be strong. 25 would be better. Then 5, then 50, nothing in between.

    You don't need dumbbells, after I got a good high qualty set exercise bands from Rouge I haven't picked up a dumbbell in years. Even a set from Walmart, the fat kind, can do anything a dumbbell can. are way cheaper, and you don't need to buy tons of weights , also can travel with them anywhere

      Extremely inconsistant, but they would work if you are strict and dedicated and resourceful. Very good at taking weight off of you at a park pull up bar or rings.

      450+280+180+90+20=$1,020 for dumbells
      160+80+80=$310 for cable machine and benches I made
      I have a lot of skills, but thats what I paid. I am about as strong as coach greg, more or less.

    I mean he ain't wrong. All you really need is dumbbells and an adjustable bench. Maaaaybe the monkey feet attachment to do some leg curls or extension exercises.

    I feel like this is the stupidest advice. Fixed dumbells are gonna be the least versatile, most expensive weights you can buy. You need to increase weight as you get stronger for hypertrophy. Doing high weight to near failure is going to be the best way to build muscle. Doing low weight, high reps, lots of sets, is gonna be worse for muscle building and will take way longer and be more work and far more boring. If you're properly increasing weight as you get stronger, using fixed weight dumbells is gonna be the most expensive option and take up the most space, as you're gonna need to buy a new set every time you move up in weight. It's literally the worst option for a home gym.

    Sure if you just want a basic level of fitness, all you need is dumbells.
    No amount of working with just dumbells is going to get you a decent deadlift, squat or overhead.

    • @deltalima6703
      @deltalima6703 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use my 150lb dumbells in each hand at the moment, working all right, can easily add much more if needed. (Deadlift squat)
      I shoulder press the 95lb ones, sitting down, not these cheater ones he showed, and I also do handstand pushups with 304lbs bodyweight. I would say my overhead is good.

    But if bodybuilder powerlifter Olympic lifter,
    Have only 25lbs you never going to build strength,

    I agree dumbbells are the 1st thing to get in garage gym but they are no good for some of the exercises he demonstrated. Only about 5 exercises that dumbells can actually make your muscles bigger and stronger. Curl, lateral press, overhead press, different tricep work, and that's it. Not enough resistance to use for any other exercises.

    • @deltalima6703
      @deltalima6703 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rows (I use 180lb), shrugs (150lb),, squats/deadlifts (150lbs). They also act as the weight on my custom cable machine that can do pretty much anything.

    not to hate ,but saying adjustable dumbells is cheaper than a set of fixed is kind of sketch, i think you have to be more elaborate , the CHEAPEST method is to have a few DB bars and a load of 1 inch plates and swap them between sets, if that counts as adjustable ,then youre right

    • @deltalima6703
      @deltalima6703 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes thats adjustable, unless you mean the allen key big boys that you set and forget.
