I started guitar at age 48 in 1998. Now can play guitar, drums, bass guitar, and piano. Am in two bands.
Music is easy now. Hardest was to start music study project.

Would be interested to know how you started guitar. Logistically... what guitar did you get? Electric? How did you learn? books? classes? when did you practice?
      Thanks!

+Seth Markowitz I am a self taught guitarist and I can tell you the thing that gave me the most energy was wanting to play the songs I liked. I started with playing chords and singing. Go to ultimate-guitar.com there you can easily learn any song you wanna learn. Its a database where everybody can make contributions. In the search bar you can enter the name of the song and find chords. You'll have the lyrics with the chords standing above the lyrics. With your cursor you can hover over the chord symbol and see how it is to be played.
Learn scales so you can play solos.
The best lesson is to get lost in playing.

+Seth Markowitz Im also self taught in playing guitar and i agree with DTMfun that learning things you like to play rather than getting bored with the instrument by forcing yourself to play chords and scales all day might make you say nvm i hate this. Picking acoustic/electric? Decide by looking at the bands you enjoy and see what they play to match their sound or style.. but you can also get an electric acoustic guitar if you really cant decide.. And when you begin your fingers will hurt like crazy so start with light strings instead of medium or heavy (just ask the person at the store to help) You can go to sites like the one he listed and many sites have "play along songs" that show you where to place your fingers on the fretboard exactly in conjunction with the song. As you learn you will gradually learn the names of chords and i think this is the best way to self teach :3 Oh and FYI dave grohl of nirvana/foo fighters self taught and still cant read music so dont get discouraged if you find that it isnt a strength of yours. hope this helped, good luck!

    Things that drain willpower:
    1. Forcing yourself doing things that you don't want to but have to.
    2. Suppressing emotion
    3. Deliberating back and forth when making decisions.
5 tips for setting up a lifestyle that drains willpower the least in order to conserve your willpower for where you need the most
    1. Make decision quickly.
    2. Set up hard rules.
    3. Change your environment so that it supports you.
    4. Prepare for the hard situation before hand. Set up plans to deal with the situation.
    5. Connecting your preexist identity to the action you want to take. Make your goal a part of who you are.
Great video! Love the examples particularly about yourself applying the tips. btw you skipped tip number 4

    5) Prep for hard situations
    6) Allign goal with your Identity

I was writing them down and noticed 4 was missing as well. Let's claim that number four is to make a schedule of everything you want to do finished before you go to sleep. That way when you wake up and start your day all you have to do is look at your schedule and just go along with it. Keeps you from forgetting things and you won't have to make decisions because they are already made

6 things, though number 4 seems to be missing! :
    1. Make decisions more quickly (2:27)
Just the process of getting stuck in decisions drains your willpower.
    2. Set up hard and fast rules in your life (2:58)
Hard rules that cannot be violated in your head actually gives tremendous freedom to spend your willpower on other things that matter.
    3. Set up an environment so it supports you (3:46)
    5. Prep for scenarios beforehand. (4:32)
Think ahead for things that might throw you off and prepare an answer before it begins.
    6. Identity (5:32)
Some kind of self-image helps make some decisions easier.

This makes so much sense to me. This is why people who are going through stressful situations in life tend to do worse in school or to gain weight/lose weight/ lose friends. They don't have the energy and willpower to put into those things and therefore, decline in them.

This is a beautiful, informative, on-point talk. Even from a scientific point of view it is hard to integrate the concepts you are talking about - ego depletion, identity restructuring, experience modelling. And that's on a theoretical level. It's even harder to produce models which allow for accessible real-life solutions of these problems. Fortunately you are doing just that. Thank you for bridging theory and practice in such effective and meaningful way. What you do is rare.
    Video resume:
    - Willpower is a finite resource:
    - learn what depletes it
    - learn what replenishes it
    - learn how to train it
    - Approach willpower in a balanced way:
    - exercise it, so it's capacity is increased
    - reconstruct your environment and lifestyle so you have to use it less (in view of your current goals)
    - Tips:
    1. Make decisions quickly
    2. Set up hard rules
    3. Transform your environment in vision of your own becoming and goals
    4.?
    5. Prep for the hard situations beforehand (devise strategies by analysing past failures)
    6. Consciously shape your Identity (as it is the most important factor to determine automatic actions)

*Will power is more of a resource rather than a characteristic. You lose it through decisions and emotions and selfcontrol. You might gain it back through sleep/food/fill in the blank. Longer decision making = more will drain, regardless of the difficulty of the question at hand.
*Make an effort to make decision making a smoother endeavor (s). Basically, fight smarter not tougher.
*Change your environment so it supports you and you body and health and emotional health. Even, pick people in your life that don't consistently drain your willpower.
*Prep for hard situations ahead. (Make decision making easier AHEAD of time: that way you don't lose energy in that moment).
*Changing habits and identity is a lot tougher than going through a routine. Often times, it is more efficient to connect your past habit/identity to your next one for a smoother transition, a less emotionally costly transition.

The concept of willpower as a resource is currently being scientifically challenged. We don't really know for sure whether it is or not anymore, as we have repeated experiments and found different results. In fact, an experiment was done and they found that people who thought of willpower as a limited resource gave up on tasks much sooner than people who thought of willpower as infinite.

Have you heard of the book deep work? It's about intense focus, and how to concentrate in our distracted world. When most people are asked about when they're are happiest. The typical answer is something like "on a beach with a margarita." The author uses a lot of research to support that rather the happiest moments are when we are completely focused. I find it extremely interesting and i'd love to hear your thoughts on the book in a video like this.

Change, transform your environment so that it can support you. Also select friends, people that will support you in that environment. Prep for the hard decisions. Think of possible distractions and prepare yourself to resist. Set up a plan. Identity: I am the type of person that loves order and structure.

In fact, there is much debate about this "finite" willpower of ours. Many studies have been conducted about willpower, but about 10% of them stated that we have a finite willpower, the rest were failures. It's interesting because those people who believe they've got finite willpower, actually have finite willpower, and those who think It's just a matter of mindset, they have on average, more willpower. Strange how the human mind works. I stopped believing in these studies, I prefer studying myself to find what works and what does not.

But now I realize all this does is drain my willpower bar because I have to spend each day deciding which things to do (and then hating myself for brushing them off).
Time to redo my strategy and set a daily routine.

I had a feeling I needed to leave home to improve my motivation and willpower. My family are very lazy, negative and stressed people. They're not inspiring or ambitious. I didnt realise how much it affected my own thinking growing up, as I started waking up when everyone else did, or settling for less, and accepting low standards. But deep down I have a fire in my belly and I keep suppressing it. Maybe I should leave but Im scared I'll still be the same person.

So...technically you're afraid that lack of motivation is hardwired in your brain because you grew up with them, right? Nature/nurture kind of thing. Well, the fact alone that you're noticing something is not right with the situation should mean it's not hardwired. Don't worry, there are plenty of people who do different things from what they saw in their family environment and they start out the same as you. Noticing something isn't quite right and then changing that thing for themselves, away from their family. Haha, you're like the black sheep of the family, going against the norm, but don't worry, it's not uncommon and every family has the odd ball. In your case it can certainly be the fact that you're the most hyper and are doing a lot of stuff, which is great.

I hadn't heard that you would indeed make other videos about this topic, about identity, and now that I know that I'm eager to be watching the next video about that ! Of course all the other videos are really interesting too, but my problem is really time management and willpower. I have started to implement the "change your environment" by the way, and I'm pretty confident it's going to be effective. I'm going to set the inviolable rules too. The fact that you look so dynamic in your videos kind of gives energy to the viewer, and encourages him/her to get into what he really wants ! Really good video !

    My understanding:
Willpower- the finite stuff that allows you to do things you dont want to do
    - making decisions decrease this (no matter what the decision is)
Discipline- the trainable skill that decreases willpower consumption when you do things
Habits- automatic programming that bypasses willpower consumption
What slightly confuses me is that by exercising willpower, your reserves increase. However, this does not seem to be the complete picture because if mere exercise of will increases reserves, then we would not have the problem in the first place since the assumption is that my constant exercise of willpower to resist sugary foods will eventually lead to me successfully resisting, but this is not usually the case.
Maybe situations where you "fail to resist" in exercising willpower actually sets you back?

Great video, as always! The point you make about identity is spot on - it's almost like a cheat code to willpower. It doesn't matter how much of your "willpower bar" you've already used, if you hold to your identity you will find the strength to do what needs to be done.
Just one comment I'd like to make - on the subject of willpower being a finite resource, I entirely disagree. It's the EASE of exerting willpower that's finite and becomes more drained (as you described) throughout your day. Even when your willpower has been drained, you CAN still make a conscious choice to do what you know is right - it will be much harder to do, but you can still do it. The decision is always in your hands.
    Self-discipline > willpower > mind > matter

Just came here from the theon identity video. It's really interesting to take a step into metacognition through your videos, especially since I've built an identity for myself that's very much based around the idea of having infinite or near infinite willpower like a superpower, and to say it's worked miracles doesn't even begin to do it justice.

Yes please, expand on the point on identity. I see that certain things tend to be so effortless for certain types of people and after watching your video, I believe it is this point number 6 that makes them and their actions sync, such that they have no desire for anything else that can set them off course and only have eyes for the ones which can be for the betterment of that identity which they perceive themselves to be. Looking forward to your follow-up video. Thank you for sharing the main gist of the book!

A good addition to point 6 is an exercise by tony robbins, where you write down a Goal/habit that should become your identity and also 2 tables. One table is for all the bad things that will happen in the next months/years, if you don't change or achieve that goal. On the other table, you write a list of all the good things that will happen, if you follow through and achieve that goal. Pin it somewhere visible, so you can review it everyday.

    I. Willpower is a FINITE Resource. (Imagine a video game Life Bar)
-Willpower is depleted when we spend time making DECISIONS and when we exert EMOTIONAL CONTROL.
-Willpower can be strengthened by exercising it.
II. Key Takeaway: Set up your life so that you drain the least willpower throughout your day.
    -6 Tips to Conserve Willpower
    1. Make decisions more QUICKLY.
    2. Set up hard and fast RULES in your life. (i.e. Listing what you can/cannot eat in line with your health goals.)
    3. Change your ENVIRONMENT so that it supports you. (i.e. Removing junk food from your house, hanging out with friends with the same goals.)
    4. ***Charlie Missed this one. Let's be creative and put in our own. My personal tip would be to STUDY the decisions of 'experts' we respect in certain fields in their everyday lives and mirror those who have achieved the results we want for ourselves. :)
    5. Prepare for the hard situations beforehand. (Anticipate situations where willpower will be tested and strategize how to handle it well beforehand.)
    6. Decisions that are in line with your IDENTITY drains little to no willpower. (Create a strong enough reason WHY and connect to the action)
Thank you very much for the video! Keep up the excellent work!

There's debate in the scientific community about whether or not will power if finite or not. There's been some studies showing the placebo of telling others, telling yourself that its infinite, and how that correlates to an increase in "energy" toward will power. It seems like a mental thing.
