    Our dobie, leash training has been a trip. He has been walked on a leash his whole life. He is a lil over a year and a half. He walks now with the leash slacked at my side. The only time he pulls now is if he sees a squirrel. I would say the number 1 thing to remember when your in the fits of training is to every once in awhile just stop and tell your dog he is the bestest dog ever. Dogs want to please you naturally but if your all work on the leash they can sometimes forget its their best friend thats wielding the leash. Overriding instincts and lots of love is how hes gotten as good as he is.

      Also, Just know that no matter how well behaved your doberman is he is gonna be judged in public. Although i get all sorts of positive comments about how sweet and mature my boy is, I also get just as many if not more comments that are stereotypes about the breed. Ive had people cross the road to the other sidewalk around my boy. Ive had joggers turn around on the bike trail. Ive had bikers get off their bikes and walk them by my dog. Just keep on keeping on and strive to prove people wrong one encounter at a time.

    'Attention span of a gnat' - perfect way of describing a young Dobe who is distracted by cats, squirrels and bits of paper etc that blow by on the wind. A whole new world for these awesome dogs ! Awesome video man ! Once again, I take my hat off to you, the perfect Ambassador for the perfect breed.

    Outstanding video. Besides positive atmosphere, the number two point that was invaluable for training our Dobes was to make sure the dog has had lots of playtime/exercise before trying to train. This gets the energy level down so that the dog will focus better. Otherwise, training usually ends up to be more like play time. Arlo is getting so big and gorgeous.

    • @DobermanPlanet
      @DobermanPlanet  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Thanks Suzanne! Very well said. Yeah, I made sure to tell people that before every scene I exercised Arlo a bit. Taking that "edge off" really does make all the difference. I'm really glad you enjoyed the video. I hated how long it turned out but I really wasn't willing to cut out anything, I feel leash training can easily get pretty in depth if you're trying to help someone who has never done it before.

      If u have a doberman they look into ur eyes not only for guidance but cos they love u it's such a special feeling I never hot from any other dog and mines 8months old much bigger than his dog he's dark dark brown tho and same colour socks they called on his legs. But when mine hits me don't know his all doberman do this but he wraps his head around mine from the back and hugs that way it's amazing very very hard dog to train tho.

  • @jclorden

    Great video John! We have been taking leash training with our 5 month old much more serious over the last few weeks. One thing for your viewers to consider - if like me you do not have a fence around your yard - and need to take your dog to the bathroom on a leash, you can’t lose your discipline. I think that it’s important to take a disciplined walk to your potty spot and back to the house EVERY TIME (even in the rain!). I give her the release command once we are out there so she can sniff around, but like you said, she isn’t allowed to pull me around. It’s tough to be this strict if you have this situation (no fence) when the puppy is real young so for those of us that don’t have a fenced in yard, it can be easy to accidentally let some pulling creep in which can make leash training a bit harder as the dog gets older.
    Also, for those with children that walk the dog, I would recommend considering a gentle leader (head collar). My pup walks good for all three of my girls right now, but I still don’t completely trust the fact that she won’t take off after a surprise squirrel (and at 47 pounds she could take my girls for a ride if they weren’t ready for it). The gentle leader was a game changer for us.
    Finally, I recommend getting a long line for letting the dog play in the yard (I have a 50 footer that I attach to a 20). Our pup has learned that she can run around and play on the long line, but on the walking leash with the gentle leader, it’s all business. I think this ties in to some of your comments on the importance of routine.

    • @pjm0621
      @pjm0621 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Maybe you do this already but I would teach the kids to walk the dog only holding the handle of the leash. For some reason kids like to put their arm thru the handle of the leash. This way if the dog does go after a squirrel it will just pull the leash out of the kids hands and not pull the kid down (seen this happen many times!!) or pull something out of socket.

    • @jclorden
      @jclorden 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@pjm0621 it’s a great point and something that I need to be more cognizant of myself as the dog gets older. At 5 months and 47 lbs, she’s not pulling over a 230 lb man - but my 50 lb 9 year old daughter.... best to drop the leash and practice those recalls!

    So thankful for this channel. You are on point with every tip you've given. It provides doberman-specific information which I learned is VITAL for 1st time doberman owners. There are SO many methods in leash training.
    When I first got Otto, I just randomly Googled leash training for any dog. I tried one technique where I stop when the dog gets ahead of me and I give him a treat when the dog comes back to my side. So Otto computed that as: "If I want a treat, I can just run ahead of my mom. She'll give me a treat when I come back." lol I really appreciate you being transparent and presenting your knowledge as tons of tips that rest on basic principles as opposed to one "dead set" method. Dobies have different personalities. Your videos give me space to improvise in that respect.

      I wouldn't worry at 3 months old. My girl is 14 weeks and while I take her for usually 2 (short) walks a day, its still quite challenging. But I know she's getting and going too get better, its just repetition. There's been times where I've come home with her and thinking, man she walks worse than any of my other past pups did. But I probably just don't remember, just remember how great they walked as adults. So I'm not worrying about it yet, at 6 months I'd be worrying a bit but 3 months is still so young and learning. The first week it was a great success if she made it around the block without trying to go back home. lol

    I finally got to bring Crowley home last Sunday. He's a little young to be away from mom at just over 6 weeks now but I have an older female here to be adoptive mom. He's already doing fantastic on a leash. He sits still for it to be put on him, he stays at my side as we walk. I think the velcro dog thing actually helps with leash training these puppies a lot. He already thinks his place is at my heels 24/7.

    I have a HUGE doubt. We will be getting a Doberman pup in about two months. I am confused about the time line/in which order to introduce commands vs leach training vs socialization (dog parks, walks etc) Does my pup need to know all of the basic commands AND be leashed trained for me to be able to take him to a park to socialice without it affecting his behavior? I hope that makes sense 🫤

    How would you go about leash training a Dobe if you'd like to go cycling with him? The idea is to both excersize my dog and myself at the same time. Having him understand what you'd like him to do 1 or 2 seconds before it actually happens (i.e. turn left/right or go straight/stop) would be nice in traffic. Hope to hear from you, tnx

    please try using a FRONT CLIP harness, not one that clips over the withers ( back). Dogs react to the collar neck pressure, its a natural central nervous system reaction, that reaction tells the dog to pull. It also can , as in not always, induce leash reactivity. Where the dog lunges and snaps at other dogs or bikes, joggers etc. IPO trainer use this reaction to teach dogs to lunge and snap during protection training. The front clip simply turns the dogs torso toward the leash handler. Its less adverse than prongs, or even gentle leaders. Of coarse the goal should be to not have the dog pull on a flat collar at some point but this will speed up the process. I have also found it stops dogs from trying to fence fight with other dogs on walks.

    Thx, going to try this. Atm my pup is almost 13 weeks, we go for short walks (10-15min 2 times/day, mostley on grass). Going from the house hes slow and behind me, going towards our home hes pulling maybe 70% of the way. If hes not on a leash he always check me out and follows lol.

    Come to think of it I had the problem with kassie biting the leash for a short time. What I did was no no, apply a little bit of pressure, and if the dog play tug of War Walk Away. Simply drop the leash and walk away

    Thank God you didn't use the Zak George method lol. I personally used a prong collar. My dobe learned everything he needed in 10 mins. I also used more adverse training. 2 or 3 corrections and we were done.

    There is so much conflicting advice on TH-cam and the internet. Some trainers recommend prongs, some admonish them. Some recommend loose leash training, etc. I'll give your method a try with my 2yo rescue Dobie.

    I currently have a 15 week Doberman named Athena she’s black/rust and her ears cropped tail docked, I somewhat taught her to sit, stay, lay down. Having trouble with her listening to come here and leash training. Now I needed her a companion so I bought another Doberman but she’s 10 weeks and a red one. She listen more then the black older one. Red Doberman name is Medusa, Athena is the black one.
    Athena is scared of almost every loud noise. While Medusa which is younger is a tough brave girl. She knows to sit only. She learned her name in few days. Medusa jumps the gate which is only about 2.5 feet high while Athena listens to not jump even though she can easily clear it. Athena doesn’t really know how to jump up onto couch or onto anything while Medusa is a quick learner. My question here is how do I get Athena to be as brave as Medusa. Medusa barks at people when they pass by which I like but Athena stays quiet and is more lovey. How do I teach Athena to not pull on leash, she has a prong collar n short and she rather pull hard and choke herself so I loosen tension to avoid her gasping for air. I go to a park that’s closed for kids but open for disc golf and there a enclosed area where I attempt to teach them and it’s a quiet area. My front yard is too noises for them as the neighbors dogs don’t be quiet in barking at everything. Any advice from anyone here is helpful and appreciated greatly.

    John, how old were both Cooper and Arlo when you had them neutered? I feel neutering shouldn't be done until at least 18 months if not closer to two years due to the development of their bones, tendons and ligaments. Honestly, unless your dog has access to females or the chance of escaping your yard, I truly see no reason to have him neutered. I live in a 15-story apartment and the only time my boy gets out is with me or my wife for his bi-daily walk (he's almost 8 months now). We also take him to the dog park and dog cafe three or four times a week, so he is constantly supervised. I had a Doberman (his name was Warlock, before I even knew what a "Warlock" Dobie was) back in the 1980s and I never had him neutered and his disposition was beautiful. He lived to be 11 years old, and the only reason he died was because he needed to put to sleep because of hip-dysplasia and the fact he could no longer stand.
