I do NOT want a rhymed sestina. I'm just dropping a comment to say that you have easily become one of my favorite people for poetry explanations. Great video! (Great outfit and make-up 👍🏽) Looking forward to exploring your channel! 👏🏽🙏🏽👏🏽🙏🏽👏🏽🙏🏽🙌🏽
You're the best! I love that! Although I feel like a rhymed sestina is coming... just because its something to do while I'm stuck not going to the pub!
I initially learned about sestinas from the book The Ode Less Traveled by Stephen Fry. This was an awesome refresher! Now I am writing one about how important and powerful the reactions of care givers are to small children and much they can influence the rest of their lives. Thank you!
I only wrote free verse until a poet friend told me he was challenging himself to write sestina. I tried one and fell in love with the form. So far, I have produced 6 and they have become my therapy. Mine have not rhymed yet, but some day I hope to do one that's full-on iambic pentameter.
My humanities professor recommended this video and I loved it! You have inspired me to write poetry again and try things, like a Sestina, that scare me. You definitely just gained a new subscriber! I love your channel! Thank you!
Holy heck! A hidden gem of youtube! Really nice balance of education and entertainment! And yes, if it's not too much trouble, I would love to watch a video on rhymed sestina.
I love your videos and am finding them very helpful. Non sequitur: It is so interesting to me how the lockdowns affected different people. I actually really enjoyed it and I got a lot of studying, writing and reading accomplished. Others, found it living hell.
Glad you like my videos. I am for sure an extrovert so craved the company. Having said that, it wasnt all bad and being able to slow down for sure helped my mental health.
@@JosieAlfordPoet I was an extrovert in my 20s but am now much more introverted. I thought we learned a lot from the lockdowns; about who we are, and how we can overcome adversity when we all work together. It did polarize us to a certain degree, however. Better days are ahead and poetry makes those days better! YAY!
So, happy to have found you. Magnificent irony in the wrestling take down of the Sestina form, and your double lined, cat configured, color coordinated with the blouse/top, headband, reverberating form, is soooo well thought out. Or is it?
I loved your poem. It was inspiring and helpful. I loved that you let your emotions show through as well. Thank you Josie. I am going to try and follow the rules, and not rhyme.
Hi Josie. This was a great refresher! Can you make a video on preparing a poetry manuscript for submission? It is something I've always wondered about, but most of the content I've seen only covers preparing novels, not poetry.
Thank you so much for this! I am working on a sestina for class and I am NOT a poet. I am a fiction creative writer and structured writing like poetry hurts my brain. I am grateful to come across this video! Thank you!
I have to write a sestina by the end of the day and this video definitely helped me as I am writing about feelings of lockdown but not the lockdown in the form of Domestic Abuse in the rare instance that it happens to men from their girlfriends instead of girls that are physically abused by men. This has happened to me and it is something that sticks with me which I understand is good for a sestina. When I finish I will definitely come back and post it. Thankfully mine doesn't have to rhyme.
@@JosieAlfordPoet yes the writing did go good. I barely finished it in time. Today my class peer reviewed it and I was able to revise some things and I am now very happy with it. I did comment a link here but I think youtube automatically removed it.
I have a sestina, but only one. An amazing poet-for whom I have immense respect-read it and called it a masterpiece, so I think I’m done lol It’s actually my favorite form because of how cleverly it can be subverted and disguised. Terrence Hayes has a brilliantly disguised sestina in his collection Lighthead. Thanks for the video. (Sooooooooo...no link to the Button Poetry video?)
Thanks! I do intend to make more of these, but now I've reached the limit of poems I already knew how to write so now they take a bit more work - I'll add it to the list - wish me luck!
Just stumbled upon this video after going off on a tangent while studying (I'm preparing to give TOEFL next week!). One of the sample lectures mentions a sestina, which piqued my interest. Background - I've been writing poetry informally for over a decade; some with a rhyme, and some with no structure at all XD I'm hoping I'll be able to improve on it and get better at poetry, and I'm sure your videos will be of help! Josie, I watched your video on sestinas and took it as a challenge in my writing. Here is a Sestina I wrote, and I could not have done it without your video. Thank you, I hope you enjoy my attempt. Cheers, Jeff B. th-cam.com/video/W1p4_bLStFU/w-d-xo.html

Glad you found it useful - the topic sounds really interesting! Repeated words sounds great for this too.
Just finished the first draft, and I'm really happy with it! 😄
Got a sestina for an assignment in my poetry class...lawdy..here it goes! Thanks for making it more enjoyable. :D
Good luck! You can do it! Pick a funny topic to write about to help ☺️

It's definitely a good form to have a go at - good luck with the iambic rhyming sestina!

My first time looking up how to write a sestina and I’m hooked. :). Aloha

I am going to write a rhymed Sestina. And I want to see yours ...

I’d love a tutorial for a rhymed sestina as well, what a challenge that must be!
I finished a Crown of Sestinas called the "Diadem".
Impressive stuff!

I would love to say I planned it that way, but I was going through my matchy matchy pinky purple stage 😂

I now see why you put this video off. Sestin-uh is right.
I hope the writing went okay. It's hard enough to wrestle with this form without dealing with a heavy subject too.
