Just make sure it’s not your flute that’s the issue! Any slight problem can greatly affect such high notes coming out. Otherwise, whatever you may doing wrong probably can be easily fixed, in order for you to get out a high b flat
Question did you start through a private teacher or public school band? I started through band and I'm really good for someone who started through band but taking a semester of private flute lessons in college took my played up a notch.
@@jelly6077 if you continue playing into college take lessons. It'll take your playing from a moderate level to a top level. And a teacher will work with you on technique and proper air support, posture, embouchure placement, etc. A public school band setting isn't going to do that for you. I didn't know until college that my right thumb was position was wrong and that it was slowing my playing down. I've learned so much more from a private lesson teacher than I ever did from my band director in hs. If music is something you want to go to school for private lessons is a must investment. That and a good quality flute. My starter flute was a Yamaha and it was good but it wasn't good enough for the level I'm wanting to play at. So when I could I invested in a Gemeinhardt flute, gold lip plate, silver, open hole, and a b foot joint. Best investment and I'm so comfortable with the brand. I love my flute now.

I just returned to music this past month. I started in 8th grade and was just tossed into a band class. Never received lessons, never owned my own flute. In high school band, I was self conscious too but the band program was so underfunded and undersupported we usually had an avg of 2/3 flute players and there was one year where I was literally the only flute player (we resorted to being a jazz ensemble haha.) After high school I didn't have a flute anymore and would occasionally play on a shitty one my friend had. I missed it so much but didn't have the money to cough up to rent one. This year, at 21 (4th year in college) I mustered up the motivation and decided to rent a flute and play again (it helps that at my uni there are free flute lessons for nonmajors) and although I get frustrated at my sound quality I have been so happy and am improving so much by having someone guiding me, giving me helpful tips, and playing with me. @@gloriacoodood2287 how's clarinet been? I feel like my own high school band experience is not like a lot of people's experience but you'll never be alone in the clarinet section and you'll have other players to help you out when you don't know how to do a specific rhythm or fingering or something. You'll only get better! Do you play songs you like in your free time? But yeah, for me high school band wasn't terribly difficult (we didn't go to a lot of competitions or anything, maybe only twice a year) but that's because we didn't have the support and thus we didn't play highly advanced music. These freshman flute players around me in college are way better than me LOL. I know because I just joined a flute choir haha. Good for them though. When I first started out, my teacher and I was working on the head joint for a while. She was teaching me about my embouchure and stuff, so I recommend that? Idk what I’m saying lmao
Hi! Flute here. I know it's not a video, but here's some tips. •Work on your embouchure (can't spell it well, sorry) as one of your first steps. Even if you can easily remember the fingerings, you won't be able to get a proper sound out if you don't position your mouth right. •Start learning notes that are on the scale first. I learned B flat, A, and G first. Then, I would recommend doing slightly higher and lower notes, and gradually expanding your range. You will have to change the shape of your mouth slightly depending on the note. •Dont give up, even if it's hard. I couldn't get a proper sound out if a flute for a while after I started. It took me a bit to be able to low and really high notes, too. •Work on your air flow and breathing. You will most likely get light headed. That's normal. Adjust how much air you use based on the note. Find what works. •Learn basic pieces and songs first. Don't immediately go for Beethoven and Mozart and such. Work on the basics first, eventually, you'll be able to play harder songs. •Scales. Learn them. They are great for warming up, getting ready, etc. •Always warm up before you tune. Play for a bit until your flute is warm, then tune, either based off of other flutes, an app, or one of the ones they often have in band rooms. If you tune before you warm up, your flute can become slightly off (it either becomes flat or sharp. I can't remember). Good luck if you do start flute!

Katie: she looks annoyed Me: maybe it’s because your flute isn’t pArAlLeL to the gRoUnD *thinks about my band teacher saying it to the flutes section every class even though almost 95% of the time it is parallel to the ground*
The thing about flute angle is that it's highly dependent on the flautist. They want you to keep it parallel to the ground in marching band because the flute is a very visual instrument, and everyone needs to look the same. But, in concert band, the best for your tone quality and sound isn't going to be parallel to the ground like in marching band. Have you seen Dennis Bouriakov's flute angle? Most band directors should understand that : )
Lea true. I’m in a marching band and oh my god my back is done with life. I had a neck spasm once and it hurt so bad but I couldn’t bring my flute down because tHe DrUm MaJoRs HaNdS aRe StiLl Up
Love it! I really wished I had gone to music school... But I picked up anyway 5 years ago and I'm not as good as you were at 13yrs old! I have recordings of myself back then, so I listen to them sometimes to get perspective on my learning.
I started in August of 2004 ( Exactly 15 years ago today), I didn’t start playing major solo rep until September of 2008 ( that piece was Danae de la Chèvre by Arthur Honegger but I didn’t perform it in public until January of 2009). I’m excited to announce that I will be doing my masters recital this coming Spring and one of the pieces that I’m playing for this recital is the Martinu Sonata ( which I’m going to dedicate it to my dad who passed away a little over three months ago because he was the one who introduced me to the flute) You played so much better than I did when I was 13😊❤️🎶
I’m 13 and I’m currently playing the jouers de flute by roussell. If you’ve never played them then you should try them because they are absolutely beautiful especially the one called Pan.
I wish now I hadn't wasted so many years playing sax and clarinet as a hobby on and off with long breaks in between. You have achieved so much through your dedication to your music.

That was beautiful Katie. I would love to hear any more then and now videos. Helps us beginners to appreciate our progress. Which flute were you playing 15 years ago in that video? Thankyou for your time effort and for sharing this xxx
i would have met katie in high school with me on piano and just had the biggest crush! sight reading along with the music is fun, you always make a sound when you mess up, thanks for sharing! damn, i gotta get a new keyboard and start playing again!
Loved it Katie. Memories are so fun. My book looks as bad as yours. Taped together and so many markings. I pull it out every once In a while and play through it.
I think you played excellently. Your teacher was intentionally listening to every note you played. Hungarian music is difficult. Bravo for you and your teacher!🙏🎶☺
It’s so wonderful you still have the recording of your first performance! My first performances were not even recorded, would be nice to watch them now though. And you’re playing amazing considered it was your first performance!!
awe this is so bittersweet 🥺i would have been two months old when you did this performance which is what shocks me the most! you’ve been playing flute for longer than i’ve been alive hahaha
I had that same book in the 80s. I lost my book along with all my teacher's markings about 3 years ago and miss it terribly. It became my warm ups when in public since i wanted pieces that i wouldn't mess up on.
NYSSMA??? OMG It was my last time doing junior all county this year and I got first seat!!! Dang there were these 2 solo parts. I was shakingggg. But it was so fun and memorable
Ah I can feel the nostalgia I get the same when watching old performances back. Miss those classical student days and all my old teachers :) You did a great job on that piece! Good tone for your age! I swear you can often "hear" when someone is going to become a professional musician :)
That was wonderful. My "big" piece was the 1st movement of the Boccherini in D. I'd been playing flute about 3 years like you in this video. It was my audition piece for an arts High School. Yes, I got in :) By the way, you play it even better now :)

10:49 and finally that G I would have renegaded earlier in the piece is at the end of the song. Beautiful 😂 I also get emotional when I play music I remember from elementary and middle school. My college audition piece makes me cry sometimes it’s so beautiful. I was a clarinet player in elementary and middle school and played trumpet in high school and college I’m a professional trumpet player today although I do own/play 12 other instruments (including a flute. That I actually purchased and began playing about 2 months ago. I got it home and looked up a flute tutorial and I’ve been watching your channel ever since and will continue to do so lol I love you your music your memories and your channel you’re a brilliant flutists and overall musician god speed to u
Hi I just wanted to say thank you for inspiring me to pick this song for my solo contest. I am in 7th grade and I got first place in my section with this song so thank you for inspiring me to pick this song
I don't think there are any videos of me playing the clarinet as a kid as I didn't really do any concerts or performances, but I remember my favourite piece was called Dance of the Elegant Elephant and I always remember the tune :)
I had to watch it twice, once to watch the performance and again to see you watching your literal mini-me. To be honest, I got a little misty eyed watching your expressions while watching your younger self.
I played the flute for about 7 years and quit when my mentor changed job-location since I had trouble seeing a new mentor would understand me the same as my former one who had seen me grow up. BUT while I did play for a mentor, I joined a junior-orchestra and we had many fun activities and even after I quit playing for a mentor, the flute has stuck with me and I play improv in folksong and stuff like that. Also the grips of the flute helped me learn sax quite quickly. It is very emotional looking back on all the memories from back in the days. All tears and sweat from trying to get those high notes sound great, learning the harder, quicker sheets and stuff like that. Makes me miss having a mentor...
OMG can't believe u sight read that lol and it was so long. U r a great flute player I play trumpet but saw u and I thought I would tune in. U R AMAZING 😍
Low-key I didn't know thta I had potential for flute until this year which I am aged 13 then I tried then it sounded nice it's been a few month and I improve alot but that song that u played was hard for me lol
Ahh the B flat! I’ve been playing flute for almost 4 years now (I started in fifth grade and I am now in 9th grade!), and I literally just learned how to play a high G 😆 (but I’ve only ever done concert band and now marching band)
I scored a First Division on a Class I solo, and it was the Bach E flat Major, also when I was only thirteen. The piece you're playing now was one of the many lessons I worked on outside of class and other scheduled auditions. I tinkered around with this one at a much faster tempo. Yna Manzano omg thank you
The thing about flute angle is that it's highly dependent on the flautist. Most band directors should understand that : )
@@Ms2gymnasticsgirls It can be hard on the neck though (Not saying you`re wrong, just adding my opinion into the mix)
Lea true. I’m in a marching band and oh my god my back is done with life. I had a neck spasm once and it hurt so bad but I couldn’t bring my flute down because tHe DrUm MaJoRs HaNdS aRe StiLl Up
floofypandaz this some marching band stuff. Who cares about that during concert season imo? Doesn’t matter if it’s gotta tilt
im in the 8th grade, I started band in 5th grade. and I can NEVER sound like that after only 3 years😫
but I love ur flute playing❤️😍
letirz she probably had private lessons
It also clicks faster for some people.
What a cute video. It's amazing you could play that only 3 years on the flute!!!
I liked this kind of video.
8:30 I can’t get *enough* of this lyrical section! 😍
Love it! I really wished I had gone to music school... But I picked up anyway 5 years ago and I'm not as good as you were at 13yrs old! I have recordings of myself back then, so I listen to them sometimes to get perspective on my learning.
Crazy how this performance was the day before I was born
I am a brass player yet I still have extreme respect for her and how much skill she has as a flute player my god.
Brass is still really hard!
Even as a violinist I can actually relate to how you used to have a fear of those sudden jumps to super high notes.
I wish now I hadn't wasted so many years playing sax and clarinet as a hobby on and off with long breaks in between. You have achieved so much through your dedication to your music.
Her: *can play Hungarian Serenade insanely well in 7th Grade*
Me: *using this solo for my college auditions and is having the hardest time with it and begins to feel inferior and thinks that maybe this actually is an easy piece so even if I play it well for my auditions I still won't get in because 7th graders can play it and I, a 12th grader, can barely play it*
How did you get on with it?
How did it go?
Soooo..... how’d it gooo?
It’s been another 11 months before the last reply so. How did your audition go?
3 years later… How did it go?
That was beautiful Katie. I would love to hear any more then and now videos. Helps us beginners to appreciate our progress. Which flute were you playing 15 years ago in that video? Thankyou for your time effort and for sharing this xxx
This was so cool to watch!! Also a surprise to hear having only heard this played by professionals 😂
i would have met katie in high school with me on piano and just had the biggest crush! sight reading along with the music is fun, you always make a sound when you mess up, thanks for sharing! damn, i gotta get a new keyboard and start playing again!
Your intonation was really good even as a younger student 👍🏼👍🏼
Loved it Katie. Memories are so fun. My book looks as bad as yours. Taped together and so many markings. I pull it out every once In a while and play through it.
I think you played excellently. Your teacher was intentionally listening to every note you played. Hungarian music is difficult. Bravo for you and your teacher!🙏🎶☺
That was very cute and great to see the difference the time makes. Fan of this type of video
You were still very good back then!! I love the sound of your flute!
It’s so wonderful you still have the recording of your first performance! My first performances were not even recorded, would be nice to watch them now though. And you’re playing amazing considered it was your first performance!!
I just started this piece today and it’s literally my new favorite piece to play as well as Scherzino which my teacher is also working on with me.
Not to make you feel old, but this video was from before I was born, I am 13 😂!
Amelie Cicirello Omgggg
So you must be 15 years old 😳
am I wrong ? 😥
Mathematics 🤯
Art _with_badreya huh?
Art _with_badreya you are stupid child
She’s saying she’s 13 and this was before she was born so most likely she was born in 2006 or 2005
Art _with_badreya what....😂
awe this is so bittersweet 🥺i would have been two months old when you did this performance which is what shocks me the most! you’ve been playing flute for longer than i’ve been alive hahaha
The second movement is absolutely gorgeous, beautiful playing.
I would listen to me 15y ago on the violin but its kinda impossible xD
Ah I can feel the nostalgia I get the same when watching old performances back. Miss those classical student days and all my old teachers :) You did a great job on that piece! Good tone for your age! I swear you can often "hear" when someone is going to become a professional musician :)
So many memories! I was obsessed with that piece too.
I’m 14 years old so if you have any other performances around this time it would be super motivational!
The sound of flute is so satisfying in the ear😍🎶🎵
Oh my goodness.... this is literally my solo for this year. Randomly screaming on the home page and Hungarian Serenade popped up 😂
You were fabulous!!!! That is a really challenging piece!!!
I’ve been playing the flute for about 4 months now- you are such an inspiration to me! :)
Your intro music was my audition piece for my districts honors band...that just gave me such a flood of emotions 😂
That was wonderful. My "big" piece was the 1st movement of the Boccherini in D. I'd been playing flute about 3 years like you in this video. It was my audition piece for an arts High School. Yes, I got in :)
By the way, you play it even better now :)
That was absoflutely amazing
Were you like a prodigy? My 11 year old just got her flute and I can't imagine her playing like this in 3 years. I hope she has a passion for it. I want her succeed at everything lol
It’s neat to hear the budding musicality of yourself as a 13yo, I could hear the beginnings of that nice bel canto sound
My first piece was Hungarian serenade too! I played it my 8th grade year. This brings back many memories haha
I just got assigned this piece by my flute teacher and I love it so much
yes more! Show us ur high school videos. Im in high school right now and I can only play songs like Jesu of Man's desiring. (yikes, but ive been playing for 6 months soo)
Your teacher was probably thinking she forgot to pick up an ingredient for dinner! I was thinking she must be so proud to have you for a student!
i'd love to see you repeat it now!!! watched it all the way through...you did!! lol....great job!!!!
I got it home and looked up a flute tutorial and I’ve been watching your channel ever since and will continue to do so lol
I love you your music your memories and your channel you’re a brilliant flutists and overall musician god speed to u
What a cute piece :) I like it.
Hi I just wanted to say thank you for inspiring me to pick this song for my solo contest. I am in 7th grade and I got first place in my section with this song so thank you for inspiring me to pick this song
Omg that makes me so happy!!! Congratulations!!! :)
I'm almost 14 and still can barely do stuff half this difficult. It may be because I don't have a private teacher but that's amazing
I’m freaking out I used the same book! I’m performing the Sicilienne as my final year concerto next week.
can you sight read most music?
katie: yes.
You sound so amazing 💕💕
That is brilliant playing for someone after only 3 years!
Duncan Tung same but with this the bassoon turns out I’m really good at it
I’m a clarinet player but this is the first vid I’ve seen from you and I’m already a fan :D
Her performance was exactly 25 days before I was born.
I was, and I still am, a nerdy person with glasses.
hang on, your 28! your so young wow i thought you were like in your early 20's wow im so astonished
so you mean I am so old?? 😂 😂 😂
@@katieflute maybe in early 30's was the guess not 20's 😂 that would cover up 😂
Ha I played that song so much when I was younger!!
I ❤ your playing!! I dont think I'll ever get this good!!😂❤
I loved this style of video.
yess we need more of this content!!
I was so trash at playing my instrument at 13, ur better than me
Aaaaand now that piece is going to be in my head all day! 😂 Wonderful vid!
i remember playing this piece in middle school and it was so fun!
Love u Katie and u played great 😘❤️💙👌
Valerie Davila 💖☺️
Amazing God given talent!!!!❤️❤️
hungarian serenade was the first piece i made all state on when i was 14 i think? we have the same embouchure but your tone quality is much better, i roll in some when i play and im trying to fix it, anyway you're great :)
