I'm always stunned by the enormous dedication of Julliard students. Future employers- orchestras, ensembles, etc. recognize the discipline and superior training of students who make it through the grueling schedule.
I’m writing a novel about classical musicians and I just found this vlog, so freaking helpful to get to see the behind the scenes day to day of conservatoire/ Juliard life, thank you so much for sharing. Also you play SO BEAUTIFULLY I am stunned
Ahhh thank you!! I'm so glad that this was able to be helpful!! I would love to read your novel, i can never find much content about the classical music world
Hi Haji, I went to Juilliard in the mid 1980's. You are SO lucky, you get a PT! We were on our own back then! I believe Michael White still teaches theory there. He was one of my favorites! The recording of the string quartet is the same piece I worked on with my quartet! Joel Krosnick was our coach. I remember the other violinist being very cranky! He came from France and stood in the room in front of all of us (including Joel) and told us we were all losers. He stormed out of the room and never came back. Do you still have jerks like this at Juilliard? FYI, The year I left, they started building the dorms. All freshman had to stay at the 63rd street YMCA. ☹️
Wow that is so cool!!!I played one of Professor White’s new compositions with my quartet last year! Luckily everyone I have met and worked with at Juilliard has been very kind! And the thought of the entire freshman class staying at the YMCA makes me laugh thank you so much for sharing!!
@@HajiKim Wow, you performed Mr. White's composition! I should email him and say hello. I had to take an English class while at Juilliard. Our teacher was Korean, I wish I could remember her name? Unfortunately, she could barely speak English!
Hi! I think its really nice to see what other music students do in their daily life. It can be really difficult for us ti relate with non music students. So your content really helps me in so many ways!
so inspiring! i envy ur routine and it must be so nice to hear that live music i miss it so much! i hope to catch up on my cello skills this year as i'm a little behind my age group and might not get into a good uni for music or conservatoire. it's really nice to see what it's like at that level 😁 thanks for the video
Man! That is such a famous Brahms clarinet piece being played on the viola! I am playing that Sonata for my junior recital and that violist sounded gorgeous ❤
Congratulations on your admission to Julliard, and it was lovely to hear you practice. I played cello as a child/teen for about 8 years, but then college and life intervened. I’ve recently been considering cello lessons again and started to looking for an instructor in my area. Given that my old cello is at my parents’ house across the country, I’m planning to rent first and then eventually buy another cello. Any suggestions on reputable dealers (anywhere in the country) for cello sales?
Thank you! It’s hard to say, I think there are many great local instrument shops in every state. In California, I often go to Roland Feller and Ifshin. Perhaps you could look up local violin shops (they are usually called violin shops for some reason 😆) in your area, and try out a few cellos? During your trial period you can take them to different musicians/luthiers and ask if it seems like the instrument is worth the price. Hope this helps!
Omg thank u so much for this video. I really want to study music at a school or university, this is simply amazing. thank u for showing this, is really inspiring !!
It was part of “Musical Storefronts by Kaufman music center” near Columbus Circle next to the Best Buy! I’m not sure if they are still performing there, but there are still some performances going on in front of the big glass windows at Alice Tully Hall!
Cool video!! Very peaceful and relaxing. I have a question, what’s the name of the meal you’re preparing in the first minute? It looks quick and tasty and I’d love to try it
After seeing that here got that app, looks helpful as I work on my cello intonation. I’m late to cello just started at 40yo when lockdown started but loving it such a perfect instrument, aiming in another year to get to level I can play in community orchestra.
I miss hearing all the live classical music of Julliard & NYC! Thank you for sharing and if you can share chamber performances, would love to see those too :)
Someone told me that if you practice 1 hr a day you get worse, 2 hrs you stay the same, 3 hrs you improve, and 4 hrs you improve a lot! I try to practice 3 hrs a day on my solo rep!
Thank you for that answer! I am 17 years old an practice 4 hours a day and the people around me say that I should got to a university and study the Cello. Right now I started to play the 4th Movement of the Shostakovich Sonata and I started the Elgar Concerto. I already played the 1st Haydn Concerto and the Brahms Sonata in e-Minor. To name a view pieces of my repertoire...
Cool pieces!! It’s really admirable that you can focus and practice for 4 hrs a day! I would say that if you love music and playing the cello, you could seriously consider pursuing it further! Studying at a conservatory is very inspiring and helps you have deeper knowledge on the arts and music. That being said, it’s also entirely possible to study something else and continue getting lessons/playing music on the side! Do whatever you think will be the most rewarding to you 😊
Saliva tests? Omg. What a joke. UGH...Other than that, this was very interesting! Cellist, pianist, vocalist here. Studied all three at University 15 years ago and this takes me back.
the wages of sin is DEATH, but the FREE Gift of GOD is eternal life in CHRIST the LORD. CHRIST died for our sins and was raised to life for our justification. repent, stop living in sin, and believe in the Gospel. :)

To survive the Julliard you need talent + stamina. Quite a rare combination.
As someone who has played cello for 16 years it makes me want to pick up my cello again. Your playing so beautiful and your work ethic is inspiring

I always wanted to visit to Juilliard school! Thank you for showing the beautiful school! Look forward to watching your next video 😊🎶
I miss listening to live music!

Which apps do you recommend for practicing notes tuning and other stuffs on ipad
I usually use Tuner by Piascore or TE tuner for the drone function! I also use forScore for music :)
