  • I've owned this Foxwing awning for over 5 years now, and I get a lot of questions about it and its quality over a long period of time. So with the encouragement from Instagram and Facebook, I decided to voice my opinion on what I think about it.
    This is a honest review from my own personal experience with my Oztent Foxwing awning, and I have to say I am truly impressed.

    I have a series 1 and I can still get parts, not just poles and pegs, just about every part that could fail I can replace, take a look at the competition, what support is available should something fail, keep that in mind when you purchase, great vid mate👍😎

    Todd - move it forward . That way if it rains you can still have the back door open without getting soaked.

      Thanks mate. I would if I could, but at the moment if it slides forward it won't be able to open as much as it already does, since the corner of the RTT will contact it.

      @@offroadcrusader Ah good point. I don't have one. Of course, Tassie vs. WA as well.

    Good review! I have one and I don’t have the issue of it not reaching all the way around but it might have taken some time for the canvas to stretch? Definitely agree with the attachment points though, would be nice if you could hang stuff off somewhere.. I also have 2 tapered zip extensions (side walls) excellent addition as they can be set up out and open for more shade or down if it’s poor weather..

      Yeah my awning is probably 10 years old, so I would have thought the canvas would have stretched all it could by now. But theres just that 5 degrees where it doesn't quite wrap all the way around. We just move the whole awning forward to compensate, but its worth noting to potential buyers.
      The walls are amazing, I have two as well. Using them just transforms the campsite!

    Thanks for the great review. I've just ordered mine. What lights did you attach to the awning and where did you get them?

    • @offroadcrusader
      @offroadcrusader  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Eleanor, the LED strip lights are just from a 5m roll I got on Ebay. They are ok, but started to yellow after 12 months or so.
      I would probably recommend getting LED strip lighting from a reputable company like Hard Korr, Narva or RoadVision.
      I did need to use a strong adhesive to hold them to the awning too, which in hindsight I could have done neater. I used Aryldite to hold the LED strips to the awning, then terminated them all into a single Deutch plug that I could attach to a power circuit near the back door.

    can u set up a light in the main Chanel? Plus the gap over the rear door may not be a problem for those cars that have a squarish rear.

    • @offroadcrusader
      @offroadcrusader  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nah because when it unfolds, the channel is on the upside of the awning, not underneath.
      Yeah the gap isn't a big problem, but it was worth mentioning. I couldn't find much else significantly bad about it haha.

    Sensible review. I have the same gen 1 Foxwing attached to the Alu-cab rtt on the canopy of my Dmax. I bought it second hand and have had it on one 4wd or another for about 8 years now. So I've definitely got my money's worth. It appears to me that the gen 2 version addresses that annoying oversight about something to hang your led light strip from. I too bought a new bag, but my original one lasted for 7 years (plus however long the original owner had it). Like you, I sometimes think I'd like to have a free standing one. But then I think about the difference in weight. The Alu-cab is not the heaviest rtt out there, but it isn't light either. Less weight up top versus having to set out poles? I'll take less weight.

    great review. been looking at one of these for my prado 150. does it cover the barn door we fully open? did you find rai got in when the awning didn't cover the back fully?

    • @offroadcrusader
      @offroadcrusader  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cheers Anthony, really appreciate it!
      It does cover the rear door completely when I used it on the Prado. Yes it didn't seem to ever pull to a full 180 degrees, maybe 175 degrees, but the uncovered section just let water run on the actual rubber seal for the back door, so I never got water inside the car from it.

    Great vid mate - very informative 👍 been looking at this style for a while and still not quite ready to drop the cash . . . . . I like the idea of smaller and lighter but still don't like the idea of worrying too much about the wind and pretty sold on something like the bush company free standing style for ease of setup and confidence the wind ain't gonna ruin my day 😭 have you compared the size of the oztent vs one like the bush company's? Is it really that much bigger . . . . . . ?
    Have you done a review on your alucab RTT? (Think you said alucab??) Also been looking at these lately and the drifta woodland look pretty sweet for the money and the low weight and profile etc, also seen the motop which are similar weight and low profile but clam shell style . . . . . Would be good to see a balanced review of RTT's . . . . Unless I haven't seen one youve done already . . . .?
    Keep up the great vids mate 👍👌😎

      Cheers mate, I like hearing others perspectives.
      Foxwing vs. 30sec awning. 18kg vs 27kg. That weight hanging off the side of a tall object seems to quantify the effect of that weight, so personally unless I got a bigger wider car, I'd keep to a lighter awning. Plus the physical size of the packed awning is like 2x as big.
      I haven't done an Alu-cab review as of yet, but one is definitely on the cards. I do get asked a lot about it, so I wouldn't mind addressing some of the pros and cons.
      One thing that the low profile tents don't state, is that you can't keep your bedding in them while its closed up. So any pillows or doonas need to come out and get stored in the car while youre driving. in the Alu-cab, I keep all my bedding up there, as well as clothing and personal items. Keeps a lot of things out of the car while touring.
      Also, with being a lightweight slimline design, the roof itsn't as strong, so you can't pack things on the roof if need be. I can stand on my roof, which I bet you can't do on the Drifta or Motop tents.

      @@offroadcrusader lots of food for thought there mate 👍👌 so many pros and cons to weigh up! It's all about compromise for the right setup rto suit yourself really . . .. Love my roof rack space and versatility . .. . . . And definitely want all the bulky sleeping stuff out if the car . . . . . Life would be boring if it was a simple choice ay 🤣😂 . .. . . . Might stick with the swagtent a bit longer . . . But that view out of a RTT would be a killer i.reckon . . . . .
      Next review . . . . . RTT for sure 👍👌😎😜
