Give him a break. He's probably learned from 'The Curse of Oak Island' and 'Skinwalker Ranch'. How to stretch 5 minutes of info into a 45 minute episode to sell more commercial time.
I don't have a truck, nor do I have an Awning, but I do have a wish list. I would suggest that you go to a fabric shop and get some stick on patch material , cut to size, match the colour or go black, and place the patch on all contact points. Change out as needed. Just a thought. Cheers.
You bring up some good points, and some of the reasons I am hesitant to purchase one of these, especially the gap issue and fabric wear. The whole problem with some of these products is the "who cares" attitude like you said. People seem to have shifted into the "good enough for now" mentality with too much disposable income I guess. This puts money in the manufacturers pocket, and they dont even have to try. Just make it cheap enough. Later on you end up throwing away your money when the product fails... its everywhere these days, from shoes to vehicles. Id rather go without than waste money on disposable products I think.
Im late to the party, but I appreciate the detail in the vids. If they're too long, its easy to fast forward. Keep up the great work! I seem to be watching all of your videos lately lol. Great job sir
I have a Foxwing 270 and don't have any issues such as yours! I have had it since 2016 with many many use. I changed the bag, because the UV damaged it!
For the third issue- If possible, after packing the awning inside the cover wrapping a strap around the entire end where you're having trouble to see if you can cinch it down so that everything moves together or doesn't move at all. Hope that makes sense. Thanks for sharing you experience.
The internal wear you described towards the end is unusual and probably due to inferior materials. I have had the Eezi-Awn Bat 270 Awning for more than 4 years, mine doesn't do that. Also the soft-case zipper on mine is never an issue. That being said, your awning is delivering shade and rain relief so just enjoy it.
Just watched your review of 270 awnings. I wanted to mention that my OVS 270 doesn't have a gap at the rear like yours. My support bar at the rear opens right up against my RTT with no gap. I also do not have any wear at all on my material. I installed mine six months ago and have travelled on pavement of back country bush and rock climbing. I also have the larger version that has two arms hinged on the front end and the rest on the back end. It is a true 270. The Lt version is smaller and has all the limbs on one end.
Very interesting! I friend of mine has the LTE and his falls short of the back of his vehicle just like mine. His also has some rubbing damage too. Maybe the LT and LTE awnings have these traits but the biggest one that you have doesn't 🤷♂️
@@varsityoverland I am going out this weekend so I'm going to do a thorough inspection to see if there are any early signs, and I'll take a picture of the position of the rear bar on relation to my tent. What I don't like is how far it hands out from the side when closed. I've ribbed it on more than a few trees. I have the exact same rack set up as you too.
Hi again, I verified there is no signs of fabric wear on my OVS 270, and I snapped a photo of the rear and it as its tight to my tent. I can't see how to share a photo to send to you. I'll post it on my IG and tag you.
You did beat the crap out the product, but you definitely gave me proactive ideas. Thank you for providing these details. I don't like the wear that is caused through logistics. But I may carry around some flex seal and butter it on. When I see the rub a dub dub
I have the FSR 270. Over a year on my daily driver. Only issue is the black bag has faded sitting in the sun every day. None of these other issues. It's also squared off. The corners are 90 degrees, so it covers the entire area behind the tailgate. On top of all that it's only 37lbs.
@Thergood How do you like it? Been thinking about picking up a FSR 270 next time there on sale for my rig. Any issues with it at all? Also do you have the annex also?
Very Interesting Video…I have an Overland Pro 270 and I inspect mine this weekend…I will get back to as well. I take mine to the beach frequently in NJ. Thanks for the transparency on video.
Goos honest review. These pieces of gear cost so much overtime you want it to last. You talked me out of this awning. Maybe Ill look into purchasing the ikamper exoshell 270 with the hardcase.
A few comments.... This is normal wear and tear and in part design flaws that can not be resolved until users give feed back, which is what you are doing, so thanks. D&P costs can get immpossible to overcome and still make the product affordable. Not all companies are equal and the design success in part comes from a compilation of other companies R&D (evolution). Things like instruction manuals can make or break a company, customer expectations, user improper use of installation, proper maintenence, etc. The more expensive products usually have spent the time, materials, development to manufacture a high quality product and then pass that cost on to the customer ( you get what you pay for)
Loved the review and thank you. I've been thinking about getting one of these for my 6x12 trailer toy hauler. I am still considering it due to the HATE items you described are workable. For the rubbing why not just grab heavy socks and cover every hinge point when stored closed. For the rear gap which looks and be very annoying while trying to stay dry under it. The C channel looks like you can easily modify something to create an extension with clips. I hope Overlander take notes and come up with solutions. I still think its a good looking and functional product.
Thanks for the review. I've been looking at awning for a few months. Currently the top choice is NatureNest. If I order it I'll also get the 99$ 2yr warranty. I agree that often buying cheap is not cheap in the long run. Quality costs $. Of the awnings I've looked at the NN checks all the boxes better than others that are more expensive.
What about using a liquid rubber coating on the canvas where the pressure spots friction rub/wear is located? Or if that is the only spot it happens, toss a shop rag between the limbs at that spot to provide cushion?
I think one big issue with free-standing awnings on market is that when they come our they are level to where you mount it..some have a inner pole at the main joint to push the canvas up to let rain rain off but I seen heaps of the get pooling. Mainly because awnings with poles you can raise 1 pole and lower one so that water rains off perfectly. I got a 270 square back and front 2.5m awning with poles but I'll be custom converting it to free-standing but my idea is at the joint I'll add a heavy duty stainless steel hinge with pin on each bar.. so that you can lower them making it so one high, one low to make water run off..that and have drop down poles
3D makes hard shell suitcase type material for their awning. I had never seen that before. I saw an inflatable awning a few years ago too. I wonder if OVS awnings are made in China?
Great video! I am actually in the middle of a few options for my 270! I had a rhino rack batwing and absolutely loved it! It definitely hugged the rear and packed easy, no wear. I got rid of it bc I wanted a free standing tent and wanted to go from passenger to driver opening. Lastly, I feel that although the tent is free standing, MANY people still deploy the legs. Therefore I can save weight and get more coverage with the rhino rack. Please provide any feedback! Thank you!
@@varsityoverland I don't mean take this one and turn it around, i mean a change of design so they are attached at the rear and then open up around the side. Or ideally just put more thought into the design to get rid of the gap?
I have a ranger and Yakima rack…I drop everything off when making camp and use my truck to travel around…the 270 awning would only make sense if I leave my truck in place once I make camp.
Yeah im starting to see the benefits of separating camp from the vehicle. I've been going back and forth between my ground tent and rooftop tent for the same reason.

I'd argue the brand doesn't really matter, the majority of these awnings are just rebranded Chinese models, so you can't really expect much in terms of quality. It just hurts more when you pay the premium for the brand rather than direct from the manufacturer.
Yo buddy, You could potentially fix the issue where the awning doesnt cover the tail gate. You could put a washer stack on the mount and bolts closest to the front of the vehicle. That will help pivot and gain a few more degrees. You may need to get longer bolts that what came with it but this may help, idk
Your awning is mounted to your truck which sees daily use and movement. Most awnings are mounted to an RV and used maybe twice a month,,,,a minimum of wear...
Dude I disagree with you. Awnings are great to have because by you are doing a trail in the heat or rain it’s so easy to pull out have lunch or beer , then put back and back on the dirt road . Awnings are a must on my rig. I’m not a fan of the mounting solutions for low profile tacks with tents that fold sideways

Thank you for pointing out the ‘260 degree’ truth about these awnings. Really. It’s a big deal and no one mentions it.
You need to slide your awning mount to the rear more. Look at the slot on the interior of the backing housing. Loosen it and slide it back. Thanks
