      I really don't get this whole "max the resolution!!!!!' crap. Older games had the feeling they got from the resolutions they had to deal with, I wouldn't want some red dead quality version of this game. It takes out the charm I like and makes it feel like it's some unity game filled with plugins

      @@cosmokramer9139 Hello! I post on PSO related videos here and there hehe. Remaking/remastering/emulating Phantasy Star Online is something I have been passionate about but unfortunately PSO related projects have had to take a back seat for a long time due to work and now work on an important project of my own which is a game that will be wishlistable on Steam soon(tm).
      There are a lot of approaches I think you can take to "remaking" a game and after all these years I've tried almost all of them when it comes to PSO haha. Unfortunately, can't say anything is shippable to players in the end. When I am less busy I would like to try to work on something again, and I do tinker from time to time, but no ETA or promises.
      If you want to remake Phantasy Star Online and don't know where to start I think gaining a strong software development skills is mandatory. After that, gaining experience in hobbyist gamedev related projects would be helpful too but at least being experience with programming will be the minimum imo. After that, you have to decide how you want to remake it. Do you want to make a 1:1 emulation of the game? This will require reverse engineering skills and understanding the network protocol. Or do you want to make a game that looks like PSO but isn't actually PSO under the hood? This requires skills in designing networking, gamedev and etc. Probably easier to do that than emulation but both have pros and cons. Remaking a game is a mounmental task and I think a strong team in the end would be required. Alittle over 10 years ago I started that journey, hopefully it will come to an end soon with something playable by players but until I'm less busy working on my own game just not sure when that could be, if ever =(. Hopefully Sega remakes it but they did a bad job every iteration of PSO preventing cheating so hopefully they get that part right if they ever bother to try again.

    My personal favorite feature of PSO's that I think every game could learn from is the weapon special attacks. Being able to actively invoke these effects added to the combat's depth, whether it be using a disabling effect to reduce the number of enemies you had to worry about at a time, dealing a percentage of an enemy's health to quickly slay a high-HP target, or some of the many unique effects on rare weapons. And tying these to equipment made the loot you find so much more exciting (really, there's so much PSO's loot does right, I could go on forever).
    I'm also a fan of the slower pace. Unlike modern games where the assumption seems to be always rushing to endgame, PSO is a game you can take your time with and choose your own goals.
    I also really like the class system for being so varied, but I do think it's easily misunderstood. It can be easily misread as a standard race + class sytem with some weird gender differences and gender locking. But really it's 3 classes with 4 subclasses. And the differences between each class are not necessarily well-explained. I love that different classes play so differently, but a new player could end up making a choice they don't enjoy.
    Really, I think PSO often suffers from being too obtuse, with systems like MAGs, Section IDs, or the intricacies of the class system. These systems are great once you understand them, but requiring this foreknoweledge of the game can make it harder to get into. I wouldn't dream of removing any of these things, but I would want to improve them so that they're better explained to new players.
    But I'm always really glad to see someone promoting the classics. I think there's a lot these older games can teach us.

      It's a bit what Monster Hunter does.
      My favorite weapon in PSO was Talis with TP-stealing special. I played a Force so being able to recover TP with the weapon was so much fun. It was probably ineffective compared to consuming fluids but I loved having it to save on fluids.

    When it comes to character creation, I liked that because it added incentive for players to make more than one character, and the creator of the game liked that the MAG system would/could be used to give your second character a boost through the lower levels.
    And on top of that, if you owned the game on console, at least one character you owned would blow past anybody who you were playing with couch co-op, so that system made it to where you could make another character that you could pretty much play when your friends were playing.
    the casts could have used more features to be balanced in terms of content, 3 traps while everyone else had 12+ spells wasn't really a fair shake, even though they could see traps and had status immunities and can heal themselves standing still, all that still felt bland in comparison to being able to heal yourself and others, and spells that had different AOEs and damage tables that you could cast in rapid succession.
    I feel as though casts needed an ability to alter movement, making them more of a speedrun character and adding tons of value to being able to run away/towards enemies.

    • @fancyesquire8888
      @fancyesquire8888 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Casts also got an activation bonus for status attacks (freeze, paralysis, confusion) making them a cut above for crowd control; in addition to possessing traps, which are arguably more useful than attack techniques.

    The main aspects of PSO for me are:
    * I loved the aesthetic. Ended up buying the art book :D
    * I loved the slow, methodical combat and how the complexity was mostly on the enemy combinations rather than the players. I feel this is something the later entries in the PSO/U series misunderstood as they tried to go faster, with less diverse enemy behaviors and more complex character kits.
    * I loved the dynamic and intelligent chat balloons that would actively move out of the way of enemies or the like so they didn't block important information, while still letting you know who said what from where. It's one of the very few games where someone can type that something is "over here" without me having to ask "where is 'here'?"
    * I love the lobby and game system where you were always running about as your characters. In most other games of its era lobbies were just UIs with a chatbox, but in PSO it's another 'place' where you can meet up, concise enough to make it easy to plan get togethers and not feel sparse, yet sprawling enough to allow you to 'claim' a lobby for yourselves.
    I'd definitely love to see someone capture all this magic in another bottle, but I feel like the original was a happy accident in the right time and place which makes it hard to do all over again :o

    It’s a crime that no other video game company even tried to make a PSO clone. Sega isn’t exactly friendly to us Non-Japan fans, I already have a Switch and PS4, getting an XBox just for PSO 2 isn’t gonna happen. I was looking for games that are similar, but found this video instead and definitely think more games should take inspiration from PSO.

    • @Icu282
      @Icu282 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@stefanswiss3760A lot of people make it sound like PSO2 came out of nowhere. But the way the online games went it actually was the next logical step.
      TLDR the order they lead to PSO2 is: PSO>PSU>PSP2i>PSO2. With PSP2i feeling like it is exactly where it is in this order gameplay wise, a game between PSU and PSO2.
      Like PSU's gameplay evolved from PSO, still feeling pretty similar but with a different class system, weapon skills and aimable ranged weapons. Then Phantasy Star Portable 2 (which is part of the same series as PSU) made the combat much more active and action based, straying away from having all dodges be handled by chance, adding a roll button and making actual shields that you could time to block too.
      And PSP2 also had a chain attack system (later used for exclusively gunner in pso2) kind of started off selling cosmetics by including them in DLC, and making sex jokes in the Infinity version of the game, which lead into what PSO2's fashion became.
      And a lot of PSO2's story beats and story mechanics came from PSP2. And the combat in PSP2 literally feels like a cross between PSU and PSO2, being the game that actually changed things that released between the two. The first Portable game was essentially identical to PSU gameplay wise.
      Yeah PSO2 and PSO play differently, but people just hate change so pretend that PSO2 is nothing like anything before it.
      What I would say makes no sense in the series is NGS the expansion/reboot of PSO2 though. For the main aspect of the game, the combat, they mostly just removed things instead of expanding upon what the previous games did. And made grinding feel pointless by making equipment become pointless way faster than in previous games, and pretty much required you replace gear and fully upgrade new gear. Yeah of course grinding always feels boring eventually but it felt like you were doing it for a reason in previous games, and they never felt like you had to make equips absolutely perfect to use them effectively.

    • @nkozi
      @nkozi ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Icu282 is correct. If you were a player of the PSP titles the shift from those to PSO2 was not only logical but rather timely - And those were good games, too. While the combat in Base pso2 was a change, the actual game structure of a mission-based party-focused dungeon crawl aRPG was 100% there. It was really NGS that shook things up, and for the worse.

    cuddos to your video,
    I am in a PSO phase now and enjoyed how you treated the subject.
    I like and dislike PSO for making different characters play and feel different, Cast being limited in healing yet going for tricky solution I remember at low level dropping multiple times Dimate and Trimate in the boss room so that I'd have enough to kill the boss.
    In the end when you are strong enough to exploit your cast to its fullest and its damage capacity fully too, it felt quite rewarding.
    The system I didn't like that much though is being a Force, finding rare weapons was cool but none really helped you a lot (you had +30% max dealt on 1 tech but compared to the difference between a normal rifle, a good Rifle and the ultimate Rifle FROZEN SHOOTER 100% chance of freezing an ennemy, the Force weapons didn't seem to help you as much)

    • @Rock-xk8ns
      @Rock-xk8ns 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The forces are definitely the ones that got the short end of the stick disappointingly enough. There's alot of things they could do to improve force. Yeah even standard beginner force weapons don't even boost MST stat, rendering them pretty much useless in the beginning since force melee is practically useless in the beginning. Horrible damage, low accuracy, single targets, and slow animations. They're only challenging in handicap ways rather than complex, rewarding ways.

    Great video, though I would disagree with you on the part of the character creation. Im in the same space as you, as I prefer solo play. I think its a good idea to give a real impact on character choice. If you pick what you want and it doesnt have an impact, it doesnt matter. I mostly play casts, but in solo play they are the weakest, since they have no Shifta and Deband. Nearly all other classes do more damage in solo play. Cast exceed in multiplayer...that I dont play very often. But I like them, so I still pick em.
    In my personal opinion, its a good system that lets you feel your decision. In good and bad ways. I like to take a look at Word of Warcraft, for example. In classic, you had one tank, the warrior. Later, everyone could tank, everyone could be a dmg dealer. It didnt matter what you picked and it didnt matter what race you played, you just picked what locked pretty to you. In PSO you have to make the decision: Do you like the visuals enough, that you take this tradeoff? I prefer PSOs system.

    I haven't seen something like growing/feeding a Mag in any game, though I guess some weapon/armor that you upgrade could be comparable. I wish the Mag feed timer wasn't there though. The combat is more action-based and the interaction with other players makes it similar to PSO in some ways. I would think Final Fantasy XIV might be more similar in other ways to PSO than Guild Wars 2, being more strictly reliant on playing roles in a party than Guild Wars 2, but I have not played FFXIV. It's really hard to find a replacement to PSO and I have just been rethinking this topic again after a year lol. I might try Torchlight or Path of Exile, though those are more top-based dungeon crawlers similar to Diablo rather than action-based, party-based dungeon crawler like PSO with many more avenues to powering up each character than just finding loot.

      I'll check out God Eater. One thing for me is that I actually dislike games where combat, and it's prep, takes forever. Monster Hunter is an example of one that I don't much care for. It's a good game, just not for me. I really hate planning for a fight, fighting for 15 minutes, to die and have to start all over. I do love the Souls series though!

      @@johnmonty7077PSU is honestly closer to Monster hunter out of the Phantasy Star games. Like you take out the class system and the bosses basically feel like budget monster hunter bosses.

    I’m glad this game is still around with the Ephinea servers.
    And your comment about hitting max level in world of Warcraft by doing herbalism only doesn’t seem correct. You’re probably thinking of another game, since once you hit a certain level, lower level items or lower level mobs no longer award xp. 🙂

    What's your take on PSO2?

    • @thehelvaen6204
      @thehelvaen6204  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I don't hate PSO2, but it's a very different game. I feel like we waited 8 years for it to release in NA to go "ah. ok." The combat is much too fast, the UI is absolute garbage and overall it just doesn't feel like PSO at all to me. For whatever reason, it felt like it got boring very quickly. That's just my opinion of course. I'm hopeful to see what comes to PSO2 in 2021, but from what I can tell... not much that would make me enjoy it :|

      @@thehelvaen6204 I feel much the same. I was eagerly anticipating it and then it just failed to impress, despite all the "more" they seem to have added on. I was wondering if it was just me or if PSO2 really didn't feel the way PSO did.

      @@spacesergeant101 The areas were generic and didn't have the same atmosphere although nice looking felt empty. The combat although fluid and kidna fun was also too easy which made it really button mashy and repetitive in og PSO you can die easily so everything was high stakes although slow. I like how original PSO had proper character classes and not everyone could do everything like casts using magic for instance I am not a fan of. PSO2 and new gen are decent just not like PSO shame pso's slower more methodical gameplay gets forgotten

      @@soldatheero Plus, levelling up in the original felt more meaningful. Remember how when you moved to a new difficulty level, your entire team would congratulate you when you could finally take a hit from an enemy without getting smacked right off your feet?😂

      On the game design side of things, I really appreciated the attack animation timing on the game. It took a while to learn, but the rhythm of the combos and the ability to vary the timing felt really good. It took some adjustment from other games at the time (mashing the attack button would result in just the first hit of the string coming out), but it feels so uniquely PSO that PSO2 just feels...off.
      I'm with you on the player IDs, it's a cool system but your ID was tied to your character's name. My HUcaseal had a really weird name to get the Skyly ID!

      @@devinmariana9327 I agree completely! It's all about waiting like 8 years to play PSO2 and then not enjoying it xD But yeah, animation timing is something that hardly any games seem to really dive into. I hope to one day make just a video about the use of that!
