Progression & Class Divergence in MMOs
Progression of a character gives players the ability to interact with an MMO’s world in certain ways. It defines your character. It sets the tone of your playstyle. The premise for progression is almost the same in every MMO: when you start your adventure, you need to set yourself up in the game’s world. However, in this use of progression, systems can work for or against the player. Classes, or your characters archetype, can be troublesome for this very reason. Much like committing to a specific college degree program or job in the workforce without having real life experience to shape an opinion, picking a class during character creation can cause this same friction and even work against the player without realizing it.

GOJIRA - The Shooting Star - All Instrument Cover
มุมมอง 1853 ปีที่แล้ว
Gojira has become one of my favorite bands. A lot of their songs seem simple, but are often buried in layers of complexity that's difficult to hear unless you are looking for it. I really enjoy this style. This is one of Gojira's simpler songs, but it's one of my absolute favorites. This is the first video of many covers like this. I need to learn a whole lot about editing and audio - this vide...
Should we have more games like Phantasy Star Online?
มุมมอง 8K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Phantasy Star Online had some interesting game systems, as well as some that didn't work out too well. Regardless, it feels like a lot of its good game systems haven't been implemented often in other titles. I'd like to change that. I’m glad this game is still around with the Ephinea servers. And your comment about hitting max level in world of Warcraft by doing herbalism only doesn’t seem correct. You’re probably thinking of another game, since once you hit a certain level, lower level items or lower level mobs no longer award xp. 🙂
Yes.
PSO does something very few ARPGs (that aren’t isometric) do right, and that’s tie moment to moment game systems into the loot loop in a way that makes an otherwise simple DPS/DEF increase legitimately exciting. Better damage doesn’t just kill things faster, it changes how you need to combo your attacks based on enemy stagger points and accuracy towards that enemy. No other game in the series has matched what this game did in that regard, and I think that’s a huge part of why people still love this game. Also the vibes are immaculate. PSO2NGS also has immaculate vibes (if you ignore the writing). It’s a shame the systems surrounding that game are so lame.
The section ID system + symbol chat were so ahead of their time. We were forced to work with other players and make friends. I would buy this in a heartbeat if it was available for mobile.
2024... ngs is pure SH1T!!
The main aspects of PSO for me are: * I loved the aesthetic. Ended up buying the art book :D * I loved the slow, methodical combat and how the complexity was mostly on the enemy combinations rather than the players. I feel this is something the later entries in the PSO/U series misunderstood as they tried to go faster, with less diverse enemy behaviors and more complex character kits. * I loved the dynamic and intelligent chat balloons that would actively move out of the way of enemies or the like so they didn't block important information, while still letting you know who said what from where. It's one of the very few games where someone can type that something is "over here" without me having to ask "where is 'here'?" * I love the lobby and game system where you were always running about as your characters. In most other games of its era lobbies were just UIs with a chatbox, but in PSO it's another 'place' where you can meet up, concise enough to make it easy to plan get togethers and not feel sparse, yet sprawling enough to allow you to 'claim' a lobby for yourselves. I'd definitely love to see someone capture all this magic in another bottle, but I feel like the original was a happy accident in the right time and place which makes it hard to do all over again :o
One of the BIGGEST flaws in the dreamcast version of PSO was how you dropped your weapon on the floor when you died. Meaning if you're playing with someone untrustworthy, they can just up and snag your rare weapon. This was changed in the gamecube version and onwards, but holy hell whoever made that choice should never be allowed near another game again.
Pso and Tales Of Symphonia. Locked in ...
I was trying to make something similar like this on godot but I had a hard time setting it up to be peer to peer. Might try again later.
Yes
For me it was the challenge mode. Love how there's a separate roguelike mode that unlocks gear for the rpg mode. Just about every roguelite would be more enjoyable if done this way. Not to mention how well fleshed out it was with the different stages that gave you new starting gear.
psobb goat
There was actual physical guide that had a ton of info. It was a tome of all serious players of the time.
Shoutout to all my PSOWorld homies out there, you made this great game even better
We can't because devs who made this are legendary people. To make this kind of game and the ARPG pacing, they are so far ahead of their peers they probably all moved on. D4 and POE always say they want to get normal combat pacing, PSO devs humiliate them. But PSO devs get humiliated on bugs and cheat security.
Phantasy Star Zero is my single player PS game of choice. It lacks the lovely, moody atmosphere of PSO, but the single player experience just feels better to me No section IDs, NPC companions, better combat options, easier to understand mag feeding and the eternal tower endgame PSO is still pretty GOAT, in spite of my preference
I also liked how they expanded the combat in PSZ such as adding shields, reworking slicers into cool glaive/boomerangs and giving the weapons much more interesting specials across the board :D
The new game(s) just need more structured levels and boss fights like that weird sewer snake. More environment and enemy variety in general as well, I suppose.
Yes. And we do like monster hunter, vindictus...
I would even buy the ps5 if this was released on it.
My only gripe about the title of this video... Should we have more games like pso? May i remind you pso exists and if you like it you can... play it
there's something about the backgrounds that make it so beautiful even if it's low resolution
That's how you know the people who made the game were dedicated to perfection. They used the limited resources of the console and made it look as good as possible with clever tricks and attention to details.
We re talking about SEGA bro
I really don't get this whole "max the resolution!!!!!' crap. Older games had the feeling they got from the resolutions they had to deal with, I wouldn't want some red dead quality version of this game. It takes out the charm I like and makes it feel like it's some unity game filled with plugins
The answer is yes
Seeing all those Sega remakes announced & the popularity surge of Monster Hunter World, it made me itch for PSO. I tried PSO2 at release and didn't like how fast it was. Decided to try the Epehenia PSO BB server with my cousin who, just like me, only ever played PSO v1 on the Dreamcast but never online. Feel great to actually play this with someone else! I would like to see a remaster of PSO.
I miss me some PSO. The vibe was something else.
Yes! But in the meantime I'm playing WarFrame. PSO2 was fun for a while, but idk.
Sega needs to bring out a proper pso remake or remaster now they are remaking their old ip's
My personal favorite feature of PSO's that I think every game could learn from is the weapon special attacks. Being able to actively invoke these effects added to the combat's depth, whether it be using a disabling effect to reduce the number of enemies you had to worry about at a time, dealing a percentage of an enemy's health to quickly slay a high-HP target, or some of the many unique effects on rare weapons. And tying these to equipment made the loot you find so much more exciting (really, there's so much PSO's loot does right, I could go on forever). I'm also a fan of the slower pace. Unlike modern games where the assumption seems to be always rushing to endgame, PSO is a game you can take your time with and choose your own goals. I also really like the class system for being so varied, but I do think it's easily misunderstood. It can be easily misread as a standard race + class sytem with some weird gender differences and gender locking. But really it's 3 classes with 4 subclasses. And the differences between each class are not necessarily well-explained. I love that different classes play so differently, but a new player could end up making a choice they don't enjoy. Really, I think PSO often suffers from being too obtuse, with systems like MAGs, Section IDs, or the intricacies of the class system. These systems are great once you understand them, but requiring this foreknoweledge of the game can make it harder to get into. I wouldn't dream of removing any of these things, but I would want to improve them so that they're better explained to new players. But I'm always really glad to see someone promoting the classics. I think there's a lot these older games can teach us.
It's a bit what Monster Hunter does. My favorite weapon in PSO was Talis with TP-stealing special. I played a Force so being able to recover TP with the weapon was so much fun. It was probably ineffective compared to consuming fluids but I loved having it to save on fluids.
When it comes to character creation, I liked that because it added incentive for players to make more than one character, and the creator of the game liked that the MAG system would/could be used to give your second character a boost through the lower levels. And on top of that, if you owned the game on console, at least one character you owned would blow past anybody who you were playing with couch co-op, so that system made it to where you could make another character that you could pretty much play when your friends were playing. the casts could have used more features to be balanced in terms of content, 3 traps while everyone else had 12+ spells wasn't really a fair shake, even though they could see traps and had status immunities and can heal themselves standing still, all that still felt bland in comparison to being able to heal yourself and others, and spells that had different AOEs and damage tables that you could cast in rapid succession. I feel as though casts needed an ability to alter movement, making them more of a speedrun character and adding tons of value to being able to run away/towards enemies.
Casts also got an activation bonus for status attacks (freeze, paralysis, confusion) making them a cut above for crowd control; in addition to possessing traps, which are arguably more useful than attack techniques.
Ребят это компьютерная версия или дримкаст?
I really liked how different the genders played. I am honestly bored how most games just have every character play the same, and "type 2" just has all the outfits. unique animations and access to different weapons goes a long way for people who like trying all the characters
Asking the community out of pure desperation: Is there any similar game that satisfies my desire to play a pso-like game? Thanks
The closest experience I have felt is playing Guild Wars 2, even though it is a very different game than PSO. The combat is more action-based and the interaction with other players makes it similar to PSO in some ways. I would think Final Fantasy XIV might be more similar in other ways to PSO than Guild Wars 2, being more strictly reliant on playing roles in a party than Guild Wars 2, but I have not played FFXIV. It's really hard to find a replacement to PSO and I have just been rethinking this topic again after a year lol. I might try Torchlight or Path of Exile, though those are more top-based dungeon crawlers similar to Diablo rather than action-based, party-based dungeon crawler like PSO with many more avenues to powering up each character than just finding loot.
@@brofenix found out that psu clementine is just as fun :) ^^
PSO is the greatest game of ALL time... oh the memories of starting on forest 1 at 8pm and getting to falz at 12.. if i didnt fall asleep before many times fell asleep whilst running hahah got an SJS drop on Ephinea a few years ago.. one of my proudest moments
oooo yes yes and plus the animation of the atatcks are not all the teh same actully so yes becuase i love pso so much i dig deep usaully right and i learned the girl human ranger right has the shortest handgun attack animation it is actully faster they test it by frames right so ya idk she is used for the Heaven striker ability cuase she can shoot it fastest or w/e
In term of cooperation and the aesthetic yes.
the ids are the best lol no no no bro u could just make a new guy to get what u needed not very hard if u think that is to much to do then u lost me bud cuase u still doin it solo style u just have mutiple guys i love soloin to a lot and i mean a lot so dont think im sayin this to say it its better to enjoy solo with mutiple guys
ok bro no no no i am just majorly confused now i do not remmever teh darlflow be able to do a 3 hit combo i have it now on Ephinea u can not its single hit
Dreamcast version was wild. Humar could use spread needle, shifta, and grants. Drop your equipped weapon on death anywhere. Have it stolen from someone in your party who immediately quits out.
yes we do need more games like pso yes very much i have yet to be addicted to a rpg game ever like pso
The novelty of PSO sure was something back then. The environment, the music and also the online aspect was huge back then. But i always felt the combat a bit too stiff for my taste. I much prefer the PSZ implementation of the gameplay on DS. Having a dodge roll is huge and loosen up the gameplay imo. PSO2 was by far my favorite online PS experience even though it lacked a bit of the impact PSO had when you first played it, it was an improvment of PSO in almost every aspect.
PSO2 is a bit too of a PA spamfest and NGS had too much emphasis on cool movements (almost a platformer with ARPG elements).
@@ikagura Yeah, i tried to get into NG but it didnt click for me. I liked that PSO2 had the combat that felt right for me with the JA and perfect block or dodges . . .
Monster Hunter tried to imitate this playstyle but the combat is so damn slow and boring
I actually know the Formula for the IDs
I just want them to make NGS system mechanics mirror the perfection that is OG PSO
That's never gonna happen unfortunately
Its all designed around making $ now.
Great video, though I would disagree with you on the part of the character creation. Im in the same space as you, as I prefer solo play. I think its a good idea to give a real impact on character choice. If you pick what you want and it doesnt have an impact, it doesnt matter. I mostly play casts, but in solo play they are the weakest, since they have no Shifta and Deband. Nearly all other classes do more damage in solo play. Cast exceed in multiplayer...that I dont play very often. But I like them, so I still pick em. In my personal opinion, its a good system that lets you feel your decision. In good and bad ways. I like to take a look at Word of Warcraft, for example. In classic, you had one tank, the warrior. Later, everyone could tank, everyone could be a dmg dealer. It didnt matter what you picked and it didnt matter what race you played, you just picked what locked pretty to you. In PSO you have to make the decision: Do you like the visuals enough, that you take this tradeoff? I prefer PSOs system.
I haven't seen something like growing/feeding a Mag in any game, though I guess some weapon/armor that you upgrade could be comparable. I wish the Mag feed timer wasn't there though. If you have all the items you need to feed the Mag, I wish you could feed them all back to back. The closest game I have felt getting a similar experience to PSO was playing Guild Wars 2 even though it is a pretty different game.
Personally I like the feed timer, only because it felt more rewarding knowing you'd have to time the 3 minutes, and people with more meseta couldn't blast past you. You couldn't even trade mags for photon drops if it was that easy to make, which by the way, using photon drops as the rare currency was a pretty great community driven currency system.
Yes. Next question?
I miss this kind of Dungeon crawler RPG, thiss kind of game is not available anymore.. 😔😔
cuddos to your video, I am in a PSO phase now and enjoyed how you treated the subject. I like and dislike PSO for making different characters play and feel different, Cast being limited in healing yet going for tricky solution I remember at low level dropping multiple times Dimate and Trimate in the boss room so that I'd have enough to kill the boss. In the end when you are strong enough to exploit your cast to its fullest and its damage capacity fully too, it felt quite rewarding. The system I didn't like that much though is being a Force, finding rare weapons was cool but none really helped you a lot (you had +30% max dealt on 1 tech but compared to the difference between a normal rifle, a good Rifle and the ultimate Rifle FROZEN SHOOTER 100% chance of freezing an ennemy, the Force weapons didn't seem to help you as much)
The forces are definitely the ones that got the short end of the stick disappointingly enough. There's alot of things they could do to improve force. Yeah even standard beginner force weapons don't even boost MST stat, rendering them pretty much useless in the beginning since force melee is practically useless in the beginning. Horrible damage, low accuracy, single targets, and slow animations. They're only challenging in handicap ways rather than complex, rewarding ways.
Shifter and the band always get all the glory while Jalen and zalor were equally as powerful!
my goal in life is to remaster this game and bring it back, id die for it.
Get to work my friend!
@@GladerDev First off, I didn't expect to see you comment here, second, how has the remake been so far? lol I too want to remake this game, it's so hard to figure out where to start though, given I've never made a game before in my life.
@@cosmokramer9139 Hello! I post on PSO related videos here and there hehe. Remaking/remastering/emulating Phantasy Star Online is something I have been passionate about but unfortunately PSO related projects have had to take a back seat for a long time due to work and now work on an important project of my own which is a game that will be wishlistable on Steam soon(tm). There are a lot of approaches I think you can take to "remaking" a game and after all these years I've tried almost all of them when it comes to PSO haha. Unfortunately, can't say anything is shippable to players in the end. When I am less busy I would like to try to work on something again, and I do tinker from time to time, but no ETA or promises. If you want to remake Phantasy Star Online and don't know where to start I think gaining a strong software development skills is mandatory. After that, gaining experience in hobbyist gamedev related projects would be helpful too but at least being experience with programming will be the minimum imo. After that, you have to decide how you want to remake it. Do you want to make a 1:1 emulation of the game? This will require reverse engineering skills and understanding the network protocol. Or do you want to make a game that looks like PSO but isn't actually PSO under the hood? This requires skills in designing networking, gamedev and etc. Probably easier to do that than emulation but both have pros and cons. Remaking a game is a mounmental task and I think a strong team in the end would be required. Alittle over 10 years ago I started that journey, hopefully it will come to an end soon with something playable by players but until I'm less busy working on my own game just not sure when that could be, if ever =(. Hopefully Sega remakes it but they did a bad job every iteration of PSO preventing cheating so hopefully they get that part right if they ever bother to try again.
People are playing PSO Blue Burst on private servers
A remaster would have me playing it.
Yes
Phantasy star online should be remastered
Ye and with technology now a days they can probably remaster it for all platforms including mobile or classic edition for mobile and a remaster for other stuff BUT allow it to be cross play and remaster can be toggled based on what the system specs are but generally everyone can play it together
@jawabear330 it's just in order for it to be a good resmaster, this game would need a lot of regulating to prevent hacking which means it would need alot of work going into the reamster. It can be done, again it would just take alot of ground work for it to be done right.
