The weirdest thing about Butch's art is that it's never on point. It always looks like someone trying to draw the Danny Phantom or Fairly Odd Parents style instead of someone who drew it regularly
I heard that Danny Phantom and likely fairly Odd Parents both were largely designed by another artist, thus why Butch struggles to stay stylistically consistent. It's a more refined version of how he used to draw that he never really got good at himself to be able to use for anything other than a loose attempt at other designs and styles. Plus, it doesn't look like he really cares about making good stills, just getting a storyboard style of splattering the idea on the page and calling it done that doesn't really jive with a still image that you see for more than 3 seconds. I really noticed that when he was doing those Danny Phantom 10 years later drawings on TH-cam a while back, where a bunch of design flaws are super apparent because he is just drawing without having any base to work from and having the faces be misaligned and not really figuring out how the limbs will connect until he's drawing the gadgets going up and down each arm or leg
that's because those aren't his style, he did create the shows, but the design process was done by different people, Butch really just tried to adopt it as his main because that what the shows are known for, his art style is his ugly neon colored pieces he does on instagram, and still some of those are traced
Stephen Silver mostly worked on Danny Phantom. It was Ernie Gilbert that gave Butches shows it's iconic look and style. He was the lead character designer for both Fairly Odd Parents and TUFF Puppy.
Yeah, he also seems pretty chill. Wish he'd get more support for his work instead of Butch, (even if Butch wrote the shows,) (Btw this is his channel link cause why not youtube.com/@StephenSilver?si=tpMs1_4CPvh9Oyoi)
Kinda surprised you didn't mention the Kuro incident. Where he worked with a fan to do some og work and didn't pay the guy. (Kuro is awesome btw really cool guy)
13:20 Butch didn’t agree to draw that, the og guy commissioned his character to be holding a blank burning flag and when he received it he edited on the trans flag. It doesn’t discount both if the guys actions and views, I’m just saying that Butch making that drawing is partially false.
To those wondering why Butch's art style in his commissions look way off from the more iconic look of his shows. It's because the styles actually came from different artists: Stephen Silver and Ernie Gilbert respectively. Stephen Silver was mostly responsible for Danny Phantom while Ernie Gilbert is the true artist behind Fairly Odd Parents visual style. I'm pretty much apathetic towards Mr. Hartman at this point. However, I feel It's high time Ernie Gilbert received the recognition that he's been long overdue.
Oh oh! Dont forget the 'your art criticism isn't valid unless you're in the industry' I think that's the one that made me the most upset. Like, dude, there are artists everywhere... they have good advice.
As someone who grew up in the same neighborhood he studied in his teen years, I actually met him irl in school and got an autograph and somehow made a fangirl squeal I never thought I could have the courage to do publicly. I remember seeing his drawings on the marker board and I still have a photo of it on my phone. This was before the controversy thing was taking storm and it feels so weird remembering it nowadays. I don’t regret getting an autograph, as I still have it, but my view towards him definitely changed. I’m just ashamed and disappointed in him. I’m surprised to see this video posted recently because I was just looking up stuff about him a day or two before this was posted Btw, Better Help sponsorship?? My dude, this ain’t it.
I definitely recommend questioning things you see online though! Especially when it comes to twitter. People there often blow things out of proportion and even fake evidence to get white knight points. The only thing he did wrong was charge $200 for a commission he heavily referenced. Antoons added the trans flag after butch drew the commission. So I think you can still keep that autograph (and memory) in good faith :)
11:40 been an artist for 20+ years, I don't and never will understand why people complain about their prices while comparing their work to another artist. Screw Butch, there's a bigger conversation to be had that artists refuse to charge what they are actually worth and instead opt into lowering their prices because they were essentially bullied to. I charge base prices starting at $350 because 1) I know my worth 2) I make sure to include an hourly pay 3) I also include costs for materials and 4) I include my level of experience since I do hyper detailed work that takes me days to finish. Haven't heard a complaint from any of my past clients and those who complain about my prices-I just laugh and tell them to go else where if they have a complaint. Irks me to my core that the art community complains about this issue while simultaneously shooting themselves in the foot. Being an independent artist is like someone starting up their own company. You won't have a lot of customers but as long as you maintain your quality, you will eventually find people willing to pay what you're worth and word of mouth will spread as to the type of artist you are and hopefully you have good customer service that help aids you. You will struggle at the start, being an artist doesn't make you anything special nor different from any other person starting up their own business like lawn care. You have to build your reputation too like any other independent business person.
I just saw this after posting a similar comment. So glad I’m not the only one taking issue with how some creatives drop their prices to the floor in order to attract more work. My personal belief is that it actually harms other creatives, and ultimately undermines those who are trying to make a living in this space. I knew when I set out on this journey to be an artist that I would be playing the long game..and if that means turning down a few projects that offer little to no pay, then so be it. I pick projects that I value, and businesses that value my time and skillset.
tbh Butch isn't so bad when you look at other big names in the industry and Hollywood in general. The people saying he's a horrible person who makes them sick need to look up John K (the guy behind Ren and Stimpy.) Now HE had ISSUES....
This's good of example of the internet not equalling real life. Sure, some people don't like him online, but fans who don't know or don't care about that still support him and he's just moved on
1:00 funny thing is that. He wasn't even designed the characters, executive producers looked at his designs and said that "his designs wasn't matching the overall theme of show" and Butch Hartman still trash talks about MLP to this day, because his art-style was "too Hanna-Barbarian"
I get that this video is just focusing on one aspect, but there is a huge iceberg of stuff Butch has done or said over the years that's questionable, or general controversies he's gotten into. From choosing to wait to mention Oaxis' religious ties until after being funded, him banning fans from his discord server for simply mentioning accidental lgbtq coding in his shows, footage of him on a podcast where he guilt trips the Timmy turner VA about another VA's real actual tragic death, to refusing to pay people he's commissioned work from, to him refusing to acknowledge the team behind successful shows he takes all the credit for and patting himself on the back instead... In Danny Phantom fan spaces he's known at the very least for being cringe. He used to cling to the relevancy that Danny Phantom has kind of maintained; starting comment arguments about the theme song wording ("young Danny phantom" vs "yo Danny phantom"), trying to retcon established plotlines to make DP into something more comic book esque, creating new ghost characters and relatives to Danny as recently as four years ago. I remember once a fan saw his twitter pfp and said the style was pretty egotistical (exaggeratedly "handsome" features) so he ended up changing his pic to a fuzzy, squished, less detailed version. In general it seems he has a history of caring a lot about staying relevant, to the point he didn't care about looking ridiculous as long as he could get people talking about him and his work. I will say that most of these points are a bit dated, I haven't really been keeping an eye on him since 2020. If he's going in a new, healthier direction, that would be awesome. I still wouldn't want him to be in charge of that rumored live action Danny Phantom movie though dvdjfjjfb
Some fans call him "Bitch Fartman" cause they find him so cringe. Butch is also a stage name of some kind, and his non-stage name is Elmer, so some fans call him that as well. I have a friend who used to run a fake social media account pretending to be the guy and they got so much hate mail daily. Regardless of how cringe he's been he does have a lot of vitriol he's had to face over the years.

The art that he is accused of tracing is of people from very simple poses. You're bound to come up with the same poses for the same characters, considering they have iconic poses. About his commissions, you're not paying $200 for art, you're paying for art from him. Art is a status symbol, that's why it's $200.
That's something that I thought about too and LOTS of artists copy poses but sometimes it's seems like it's okay if certain artists copy but if another does the same thing, suddenly they're being attacked. It makes it really hard for people to use popular art as references without being accused of stealing...

Twitter is just toxic. Most of these users aren't even artists calling his work "traced" referencing is different from tracing. I don't understand artists themselves comparing their work to his when it's literally a different art style and no that doesn't make you better. I believe his commissions are priced high because he's already a big name in the industry. His commissions are more like autographs in my opinion, like a novelty item where you get a drawing from your favorite cartoonist to heal your inner child.
I know right also that Dib drawing wasn't a commission. It was a screenshot from the video Invader Zim in the Fairly Odd Parents style. It was a quick sketch of Dib meeting Crocker and Crocker was cropped out the photo.
@@icecreamhero2375 i didnt know this! Butch Hartman gets a lot of unnecessary hate for being an artist, crazy af. Im willing to bet the haters are the younger generation who probably never watched his shows.

While Butch is no saint and I do think his commissions are quite absurd for the price (if not some even traced and not even in the right style), it really does show you how much these people have a high horse when they self-promo against an entirely different style and use this situation purely for their own gain 😭 I understand the $200 issue but it really does make me think that someone did that just to promote their raunchy artwork or get their ego massaged, some things never change. @@cloudirubez07 i think $200 for his novelty drawings is quite reasonable. He is a big name in the industry. After all, do people not pay millions of dollars for a couple of paint splotches on a canvas calling it “abstract” art?
Life lesson. Like I learned growing up with Ren and Stimpy as my favorite show as a kid. Don't look into your favorite animators. It's so easy to do now compared to the early 90's, just don't do it, plausible deniability is a thing for a reason. Don't look behind the curtain and ruin an entire crews worth of work.
I heard that trans-flag thing was faked, Hartman drew it all but with a blank flag or something and buyer colored it to look like the trans-flag or something like that. The Mikasa doesn't look traced at all, but he definitely used that or a similar image as reference cause he probably didn't even know what Attack on Titan was. In the same defense I have to say even masters like Aaron Blaise essentially copy a reference all the time, when Aaron did the 100 Years of Disney most of them were straight from the reference and he's a Disney animator, you can't remember all that shit in your head even when the exact topic was your profession.
18:20 shul've just stuck with the 2d, I thought we have already been over how the fairly odd parents art style doesn't translate well into 3d with the jimmy timmy power hour
I recommend you Steven Silver's courses more, the real artist and designer behind the 'butch hartman' style. I also hear that the art of the burning trans flag was actually commissioned as a white flag, and the commissioner colored in the trans colors.
No offense, but Fairy Odd Parents was one of the shows I looked at as a kid over 10 years ago and thought “if this is on tv, then I can make a cartoon.”
IKR I grew up with Qubo and Sprout, and I kind of thought of Fairy odd parents as an "ugly" show. Like, I never enjoyed watching it. I kind of watched it when there was nothing else on. The actual good shows were Kipper, Scaredy Squirrel, and Marvin the tap dancing horse (If you haven't heard of the last one, look it up! it's amazing)
Isn't it ironic how it's always the people that we don't expect it from to do that one thing that destroys their whole career lmao. Still tho, I feel like both butch and the ones accusing him went wrong. I mean it's twitter we are talking about.
Not to defend Butch Hartman or anything but that Mikasa picture really doesn't look like it's traced. It definitely looks like he referenced that picture when drawing it like maybe he had the picture up on his phone or something and is trying his best to replicate it the way the face is drawn and the way the body is drawn don't really look like it was traced over definitely the same pose and even the hair is in a similar if not exact same position so it's definitely referenced at least. edit: Haha i actually made this comment before seeing the rest of your video so I didn't see that you commented on this stuff lol oops😅
**looks at "traced" work** **looks at original work** for a traced work, the proportions ain't even shit. It's referenced. and a bad attempt too. Also kinda hate the fact the the word "traced" is becoming a blanket term in these cases, where even if I trace it, it won't even align.
Re. the first image of Mikasa, that not tracing. Coping at worst. And in my opinion not even a copy. His version, while not in his style, was still very unique. Just to note. I have no clue who this guy is and never watched his work. I'm 40. I grew up in 1980s. I studied animation, and got 2 useless degrees in area of animation and cinema. So, just my 2 cents. There are 2 issues. The first is if he didn't deliver what customer asked for. That's up to customer to decide. The second issue is how much he charges for what he delivers. That was way too much. He is clearly up-charging because of his fame.
Butch Hartman did not trace other people's artworks. Butch is obviously used other artworks as references. I am convinced that Butch Hartman doesn't even know the anime characters people request and just searched Google for references and created them in his own style. People don't know reference a character to your art style and completely tracing someone artwork and style image by image AKA Tracing. Never believe a loony with no eyebrows on tiktok.
13:11 Ok, not defending Butch for anything else, but he did not draw that. The actual drawing he made was of Anton Burning a blank white flag, Anton made it a trans flag afterwards to stir drama. Again, Butch is terrible, but if you want to criticize him, do so for things he actually did.
So many impactful work during the years and people just cancel him for a couple of overpriced drawings and small drama? People are cruel in the art community, really. It is easy to forget how aggressive people are actually. About the price - it's totally normal regarding his career path. No one from the artists that critiqued him are famous cartoonist with the several award winning shows. The price includes not only an actual work. My point is: people are unfair sometimes. I am glad he is ok.
It's his behaviour that people didn't like, then after that the art community went after his work, nobody learned how to separate the art from the artist apparently
Tbf, he has a larger name behind his art. Also, knowing his artstyle was simplistic in the first place, what were people expecting from a commission? Tracing aside, you could probably make more money off the commission if you resell it to die hard fans.
I really like your vids because it has a humane tone to it. Most people covering drama on twitter just takes a side and bashes the person but, you give the benefit of the doubt and dont shove your ideals down our throat. Its just nice watching something without propaganda. Thank you.
Not gonna lie, I actually genuinely like Butch's interpretations of both Mikasa and Rin Chan. I paused the video and took a few minutes to gauge all the discrepancies between the reference photo and his drawing. I admit, those commissions were 150% egregiously overpriced to just be over-referenced and 80% copies; but again, I like what little creative liberties he did take. I think it took SOME level of talent to redraw the anime style, presumably from scratch. The proportions differ, the poses slightly differ. Rin Chan's hand holding the kettle seemed to be unique; and Butch added some gear for Mikasa that wasn't in the original. If these two commissions were a quarter of the price, and Butch credited the inspiration artists in his social media posts, I'd say the criticism is unwarranted. So yeah... I liked those two redraws by Butch, but I can kind of understand where the Twitter outrage came from.
This is really shitty, but there's one piece of "evidence" I don't agree with. I don't think being paid to draw a trans flag burning makes him transphobic. He might unrelatedly be transphobic, I'm not sure. But if you're paid to draw something, that drawing should not be used as evidence of your morals. Most people would do things against their morals for enough money, especially if it isn't directly harming anybody
The thing you learn over time is that people who are genuinely bad are uncancelable & that the people that "disappear" probably weren't as bad as the Genshin Impact pfp people try to paint them out to be
Butch Hartman is the embodiment of the "you die as a hero, or live long enough as a villain" meme. I feel slapped when one of my childhood shows was created by a then scammer. His newer art style is such a downgrade from the former like, he used to work for the industry with that 200 art? :/
I thought those people kept putting that picture of Dib next to their great art to say “I poor my soul out into my art!“ and then one of them is that picture of Dib that looks goofy af 😢😅
for someone that has been in the industry for 20 something years he definately has nothing to show for it at this point. I think instead talking down to artists, bashing fandoms, not paying artists, taking money from fans, etc he should actually be a better example for new artists because one day they'll have jobs than you will
I think the real reason why they failed to catch butch was because people really saw what he was doing, gave him the negative limelight, and just didn’t care afterwards. Like, whatever he does now in days is so insignificant to the art community as a whole now in days that, he could be making a new episode of TFO, and no one would care because it’s been ran through the ground for so many years that no one realistically cares about it anymore, similar to spongebob, similar to a lot of show of yesteryear, similar to Simpsons, no one really cares, and people have just about moved on from him.

Money. Some people take sponsorships without doing any backgroundchecks.

13:20 Butch didn’t agree to draw that, the og guy commissioned his character to be holding a blank burning flag and when he received it he edited on the trans flag. It doesn’t discount both if the guys actions and views, I’m just saying that Butch making that drawing is partially false.
Kinda bad how that Antoons guy basically made it look like Butch drew it tho

I’m surprised to see this video posted recently because I was just looking up stuff about him a day or two before this was posted
Btw, Better Help sponsorship??
You have to build your reputation too like any other independent business person.
oh thats a good tip
I just saw this after posting a similar comment. So glad I’m not the only one taking issue with how some creatives drop their prices to the floor in order to attract more work. My personal belief is that it actually harms other creatives, and ultimately undermines those who are trying to make a living in this space. I knew when I set out on this journey to be an artist that I would be playing the long game..and if that means turning down a few projects that offer little to no pay, then so be it. I pick projects that I value, and businesses that value my time and skillset.
true
"The higher role you are, the worse you are at judging people who aren't in that role."
I found this on internet
tbh Butch isn't so bad when you look at other big names in the industry and Hollywood in general. The people saying he's a horrible person who makes them sick need to look up John K (the guy behind Ren and Stimpy.) Now HE had ISSUES....
Butch Hartman, Dan Schnieder and John K are all bad but Dan and John need to be in prison
This's good of example of the internet not equalling real life. Sure, some people don't like him online, but fans who don't know or don't care about that still support him and he's just moved on
Yeah, sadly.
Butch is the hero we didnt want, nor deserved but definitely needed. If this guy can make it - my art career is already a done deal lmfao
@@polarfarina2726Butch Hartman once said that autism could be cured through prayer in what I think was during a church conference. 🤦 As an Autistic person myself this is really ableist and disgusting to hear. noooo not betterhelp again? why?
When you have a ton of money and credentials within any big industry, it's often very difficult to be "cancelled." Butch couldn't get away with 99% of the shit he's pulled in the past few years if he were just a TH-camr or a Twitter/IG artist. Sadly, no matter how awful his behavior is, he's a wealthy professional cartoonist within the industry, so he could just get away with it.
Surprised you didnt bring up the new Danny Phantom comic book while talking about that fandom though.

Antoon has always been a controversial figure on this platform and that's what happens when culture war does to a person. That is no surprise considering that this is the same guy who also made an infamous comic on making fun of George Floyd.

@@AA-rr9ly A lot of the hate is overblown. I will admit Oaxis was a bit shady. I would like to believe they simply bit off more than they could chew and it fell apart rather than Butch trying to scam people. I still like him and his work. There are actual bad people.
Besides that I just hate Twitter too, absolutely horrendous website with loads of people who are either degenerates or the most radical people in the world-it’s like there’s no in-between with them.
Talking to a Twitter user is like talking to a brick wall, except the brick wall is armed with turrets.

I saw one podcast and he was terrible to tara strong saying he wished the other actress was still alive all Tara could do was awkwardly laugh

I also hear that the art of the burning trans flag was actually commissioned as a white flag, and the commissioner colored in the trans colors.
Everytime I hear about this man I always look at my art and relax on how much I decided on my commissions.
Of course he's working on the reboot, he desperately wants to live the glory days.
Honestly at this point not one really cares.

It's funny how no one noticed that.
Any artist can charge any price for any art. Especially if its not a trace. He's wrong for tracing but you dont HAVE to pay 200$😂
And by tracing i mean chraging for heavily referenced or copied art. I always reference but I dont charge
Any price for any art is ridiculous💀

Re. the first image of Mikasa, that not tracing.
Calling him a professional artist is a bit of an exaggeration now isn't it?
Don't forget his monster of an ego.
Great video but I cannot get past the Rayman Origins OST as the background music. 😭
It's his behaviour that people didn't like, then after that the art community went after his work, nobody learned how to separate the art from the artist apparently
dinky dinosaur looks a LOT like land before times with slightly differant look
A bunch of people threatened to have me cancelled...........im shocked it didnt happen. Was pretty traumatic
wait Hartman... Cartman...OH MY GOD i get it now!
The pinnacle of butch was someone tricking him into drawing shadman
Tbf, he has a larger name behind his art. Also, knowing his artstyle was simplistic in the first place, what were people expecting from a commission? Tracing aside, you could probably make more money off the commission if you resell it to die hard fans.
I tried better help, and I therapied the therapyst. 0/10, do not recommend.
Was not expecting the sonic gem stage music and absolutely got whiplashed back into playing the genesis.
Butch Hartman vs 'this twitter user' - reason why he get to charge more...
Dislike because there was a sponsored segment
And also because the sponsor was BetterHelp, despite that they are a terrible company.
The thing you learn over time is that people who are genuinely bad are uncancelable & that the people that "disappear" probably weren't as bad as the Genshin Impact pfp people try to paint them out to be
Moral of the story: NEVER join twitter! Thank you 👍🤣
Butch Hartman is the embodiment of the "you die as a hero, or live long enough as a villain" meme.
I think the mikasa one might have been used as reference cause you can still see huge differences but it’s just my opinion.
Can’t say the same for the others.
This guy has never heard of Ken Penders.
Butch perfectly encapsulates the quote, "Never meet your heroes" 💀
3:13 LMAOOO i loved the drew gooden and danny gonzalez joke ❤❤
I've drawn better quality free requests than that...Shit, I should start charging people.
for someone that has been in the industry for 20 something years he definately has nothing to show for it at this point.
Like, whatever he does now in days is so insignificant to the art community as a whole now in days that, he could be making a new episode of TFO, and no one would care because it’s been ran through the ground for so many years that no one realistically cares about it anymore, similar to spongebob, similar to a lot of show of yesteryear, similar to Simpsons, no one really cares, and people have just about moved on from him.
im confused because none of it looks traced? it looks like a reference. so im confused...
