      I cut down to >3% carbs on my first day and I’m consistently under 5%. Had bad keto flu for 3 days then it went away. I eat once a day, and I am completely satiated. I have a keto yogurt and an avocado, and it seems to hold me over until the next day! I was actually kind of nervous like why I wasn’t feeling hungry eating so little. It’s actually kind of amazing how little you need to survive!

    I have been on a high fat diet ( and IF) for a long time and lost a lot of weight ( from 60kg to 48kg). I never crave carbs-sugar. The only carbs I eat are organic starchy vegetables. I worry I’m far to slim. What should I do to put on weight?

    Hi I am a bit confused about total carbs and net carbs and which one should you use. I think from what I understand net carbs are total carbs minus the fibre? But looking at my Organic Coconut Flour the back it says carbohydrates 16g and fibre 42g so that would make net carbs a minus number? Similar problem with other products I have so I’m a bit confused.

    • @its1me1cal
      @its1me1cal 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m living in the UK and in another of Dr. sten Ekberg’s videos Chris lumb also in the UK answered this question, basically in the UK/EU they use net carbs on the labels not total carbs so the fibre has already been removed.

    The difference of opinion regarding eating greens or vegetables and counting these in your carb allowance has created confusion to me. Some have you eat all the vegetables you want. (Non-starchy). Broccoli and Brussel sprouts can add up. If I do than I find 20 carbs really hard. I am trying to help a friend and she tells me what she has eaten and her carbs are always high due to the vegetables and sometimes the Weight Watchers mindset. She is not loosing after the initial weight loss. I have lost my weight but we are very different body types and I don’t want to help her in the wrong way. She can not mentally handle the counting of macros, just can’t handle it. If you can advise me on the vegetable/carb, it will help. I have directed her to the “My Plate” way of doing it. Any suggestions would be great. She is definitely frustrated and I don’t want her to quit and she really wants to succeed. Also, what is the best way to get her mindset out of Weight Watchers, and into the Keto mindset.
    I will continue to follow your guidance and catch up on your videos, you are well recommended. Thanks

    • @drekberg
      @drekberg  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The 20grams of carbs is a guideline. The key is to eat foods that don't produce an insulin response, and since vegetables have a low glycemic index and lots of fiber they have a negligible impact on insulin. As far as the calorie counting... it is very difficult to over come because it has been a religion for the last 50 years. A book I would recommend is "Why We Get Fat: And What to Do About It" amzn.to/2H6Pi8g ... link to an Amazon affiliate page where I get a little money if you buy at no price extra to you.
      Weight Watchers is indeed stuck in the calorie mindset which is proven to fail. Feel free to ask more questions.

    You are, succinct and articulate in expounding our philosophy and methodology which is important for " newbies" and those who have lost their way.

      @@grez6330potatoes are not vegetables--they are starches/carbs. They are converted into sugar very quickly, which raises blood sugar. The body then scrambles to either utilize these carbs as energy, ASAP, or must store as fat. Anything that raises blood sugar becomes an emergency for the body, it must lower blood glucose as quickly as possible.

    You are so right. Carbs are highly addictive. I attended a keto meet-up group that had just started up. It was supposed to inform participants how to do keto and and to support them. One person wanted to eat keto but only if she could find tasty substitutes for her high carb foods. She had tried keto recipes that mimicked bread, cookies, desserts, etc. but was constantly being disappointed at the taste. What she failed to understand, was that she had to kick those high carb foods out of her mind, in order to cure the addiction. Imagine trying to find a substitute for alcohol.

But I’ve got to say I still crave sugar real hard sometimes, are used 80s triple fill cherry pastries with a glaze on top and I really miss it, dang it. I remember a time when I could eat a bunch of sweets and a hell lotta chocolate without any issue, always craving for more. After starting keto/ low carb diet, eating more than 3 cubes of chocolate makes me wanna puke. I crave it after eating lunch (doing OMAD), but once I put a bit in my mouth it doesn't taste that good. Still eat it a bit, though, just to stop my brain from craving lol.

      I hold dark chocolate pieces in the fridge for when the urge is there. Ones around 85% cacao. 1 or 2 pieces a month. I used to hate dark chocolate, but my taste buds changed and now dark chocolate tastes sweet. My test will be this first Halloween seeing snickers, Reese’s peanut butter cups and paydays.

    I've been IF for the past month, went to a staff party and disregarded my carb addiction and set off a battle this week. Been OMAD/TMAD still but the carb cravings are painful. Went overboard with bread(4 slices) and I have felt the inflammation return, my head all congested feeling and headache. So I know Keto/IF has given me a better quality of life and clarified when I choose to disregard my better judgement I will regret it.

    • @drekberg
      @drekberg  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Only you can answer that question. If you feel good I wouldn't worry about losing a few pounds, but at the same time I think staying low carb is more important than how often you eat. The main benefit of fasting is to reverse insulin resistance, and if you are thin and your A1c and insulin are low you probably don't have an issue.

    20 g has been my goal since i went on a 0 g experiment. However I kind of get cravings, also a Avokado is roughly 20g. The ketoacidosis can be dangerous for me as a type 1 diabetic. I noticed that during my 0g experiment.
    What is the longterm level I should aim at as a type 1 diabetic. I need to burn fat, but I don’t want to get into a dangerous ketoacidosis.
    A interesting thing that I don’t understand either is that just an hour ago I ate a Avokado with shrimp, egg, mayonnaise and spices I estimated 25g of carbs. It’s now 1,5 hours after and my blood sugar is on a downward slope. Nothing has gone up. I have not taken any insulin for this meal. And I’m using a pump that continually gives a base insulin. But that keeps me on a steady level when fasting, not when eating carbs, it should go up but doesn’t seem to.
    Howcome these carbs have no effect at all?
    Is it only the liver that obtain the carbs from a Avocado?

      Hello T Est ....did you ever find an answer to your question? My son is type 1 diabetic and he finds that when he exercises ...(works actually, cutting wood) ...he has to be very careful that his bloodsugar doesn't drop dangerously low...but I don't understand how the necessary glucose is getting into the cells!!!!!

    • @dbtest117
      @dbtest117 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@annipetratos9401 Well partly, carbs that are fibers are not really feeding you but it's feeding the microbes in the intestines. So total carbs - fibers are the carbs that you get.
      I'm in the state now that when I exercise my glucose goes up, not down as it used to be.
      My body has also become very efficient in turning protein to glucose. I'm not exercising as I used to because of Corona.
      So right now I'm struggling with getting results from the ketogenic diet.
      Insulin is the hormone that opens up the cells to receive glucose. However cells can become insulin resistant. This is basically what later turns into diabets type 2 if it's allowed to progress.
      I don't know what type of Insulin your son is using nor him, so I can't give any more precise advice than to try reduce the insulin amount before wood cutting or other exercises.
      Different Insulin types have different duration of being functional.
      I'm using only a 4 h Insulin type, with a pump.
      The pump has programmable base insulin levels, that I've programmed according to how my body works. I also had a separate program for the days after I played Floorball (once a week).
      I have been able to reduce the insulin amounts which has help me loose weight ( 25 kg). Without having elevated glucose levels.
      Most important is to have good glucose levels. Second to have good glucose levels without using lots of insulin.
      That is the priority order.
      With the Ketogenic Diet you can get your body to manage the low glucose levels by converting fat or protein to glucose. But this requires that your insulin usage is accurate, and low enough. It's not easy to maintain that position though. For me it required 2 exercise activities in a week, and a strict low carb diet.

    Thank you for all your videos I’ve now been in keto 5 weeks on under 20 carbs a day, I’ve gone down from 133 kg to 115kg my goal is 100kg. I’ve also stopped the medication I was on for high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes, the doctors were really shocked with my results after a blood test a couple of weeks ago.
    I do miss stuff like fish and chips and a kfc, maybe when I get to my goal weight I maybe can have a few more carbs one week a month or something but don’t want to be so unhealthy again and fat so it’s a hard one I think. Do you have any advice what I could change a bit when I lose another 15kg?
    Thanks once again for motivating me and so many others

    I have not eaten any carbs for like 4 months, and I had no desire for any kind of sugar or carbs. Then today someone brought some cookies I use to love to work, and while I didn't eat any, when I got home I got hit with a super craving for something sweet out of nowhere.

    Thank you so much for your work!! I have been in a ketogenic lifestyle (ketosis) for almost 2 years now. I have dropped 34 lbs. BMI 20.6 I am in maintenance but 2 things:
    1. I still crave sugarfree gum (I chew 4 or 6 a day). I wish I could remove this.
    2. I think I have inadvertently I think I have slowed down my metabolism since I was very naive and dropped my calories to low (1000 approx. 70% fats 28% protein 2% carbs) so I am gradually increasing 150 cal per week (made up of fats and protein). Until I reach my maintenance goal. I am also now alternating my meals, sometimes I have 3 spaced out meals, sometimes 2 or 1 a day. Do you have any suggestions for this? Do you agree on my approach?

    • @drekberg
      @drekberg  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      #1 Sugarfree gum can be very addictive, but I would strongly recommend to stop it. The physiological component of the addiction usually goes away in a few days. The emotional addiction could take a little longer. Artificial sweeteners are powerful stimulates and also trigger insulin, so it is like maintaining the sugar habit without eating carbs.
      #2 sounds great.

      I make myself a giant omelette and put in mushrooms, onions, a large handful of mozzarella and a large handful of cheddar. It has to be finished under the grill bc it's too heavy to turn! I have with a green leaves/olives/beetroot salad. I dress the salad in EVO and balsamic or make a vinaigrette with ACV. When you cut the omelette the cheese is stringy like pizza! Sooooooo good!!!!! 😋😋😋
      Obviously, you can put whatever ingredients you want in your omelette and make it more 'pizza-y'! 😉

    I must admit I'm addicted to food, I can't seem to fast for more than a day. I did manage 50hrs fasting but I guess that was just a fluke. I have emersed myself in most of your TH-cam videos and for the most part I understood them. I have yet to fully make the transition to low carb, I seem to be in a vicious cycle of fasting for autophagy, getting one day then faltering then eating a high carb meal like a plate full of Mexican rice with madras sauce and grated cheese. I'm a vegetarian and I find I'm very limited for meal options. I have three meals to alternate, Omelette, veg namely broccoli, cauliflower and Brussel sprouts and a bag of mixed salad. the variety is just not enough, but as for eating anything that had a heart beat crosses my philosophy about life, I would much rather die than take another life to sustain my own. I seemed to hit a plateau early on which I haven't beaten yet. I have to go into autophagy to create stem sells to aid in the regrowth of my hippocampus, and yes I have memory problems due to mild onset of dementia and I smoke and have type two diabetes, I feel like it's an up hill struggle that my time is running out before I lose my mind to dementia, I find that use it or lose it part of activation very difficult and my sleep is terrible sleeping one night in every two days, I'm also on antipsychotic medication that reduces my concentration to roughly ten minutes and try's to shut my mind down 24/7 that's why I have to repeat watch all your vids to get the information to stick in my head. lets face it I'm doomed

    The hardest thing is to know how much grams of carbs or protein etc you're eating. How do we know what 20 grams of food looks like.

      You need to spend some time learning. Get a book with nutrition tables. Look up some values on line and buy a food scale. It takes some effort initially, but it is all part of the learning.

    When I started 4 weeks ago, I had a gout attack , it was the catalyst that spurred me on , I've lost 28 pounds and I can feel the arthritis pain diminishing ,40 yrs of crap food takes awhile to get rid of.
    The residues built up in your body need time to be released and autophagy needs to be induced regularly and persistently to maintain the healing , I expect it to take at least a year and this mindset is also helpful in maintaining my focus.
    I tell myself "Relax you're on the mend" ....`I eat better food but a lot less so my food bills haven't changed.
    Thank you Dr Ekberg , Dr Berry and Dr Berg you have helped me so much.

      That was inspiring. I'm 2 months in and have def lost weight, but I wasn't doing it for that. I was doing bc I have leaky gut, RA, blah blah and wanted to see if I could mend myself (am on zero meds). I'm not really getting cravings - occasionally I get bored and stuff a handful of nuts in my face just for the heck of it. I want to start feeling AMAZING tho, as I think that will be really encouraging, but mostly I'm just meh, getting on with it, with the same physical symptoms I had before.

    #1....WHO CAN STOP EATING 4 24 HOURS!?!?....NOBODY!!! Especially someone that's overweight and addicted to FOOD!!! We would be setting ourselves up 4 failure! INSTEAD....Show us how to take baby steps....we didn't get here overnight with these cravings! I can't STOP my binge eating on a dime! Yet I'm slowly following many of your health-ful tips going on 2 weeks ( 4 the 1st time stopping my bing carb eating in my whole 77 yr life!!!) success already, and as long as I DON'T put EVEN ONE Carb goodie in my mouth, I'm fine....''really ok''! I'M SO GRATEFUL AND SHOCKED at how easy it's been even right from/during the first day, expecting withdrawals, yet they never came, because I simply (like you commented) didn't allow even one sweet snack the privilege of entertaining a carb morsel into my bloodstream!! That's all it takes!!....but I know as soon as I would give in....like you said, out of boredom, (I'm not really hungry 4 anything, my mind knows out of habit I'm supposed to be doing something within my daily bad habits in life, Example: like a smoker having the habit of holding a cigarette. Bad Habits, cures take time 4 the brain to readjust its thinking....maybe NOT AS SIMPLE AS IN 24 hr MAGIC TRICK! but hopefully in a few weeks of constantly trying....correction ''ACHIEVING'' lol! Same 4 weight Loss, Alcohol, ''''SUGAR'''', Drugs, Sexual bad habits etc. TAKES TIME, Slow in consistent! WORKING SO FAR 4 ME, along with a ton of prayer helps as well! Another good example that cured me of a habit! I was constantly over n over thinking of the songs of ABBA the singer group, and couldn't get these (repetitively thoughts in my head) songs to stop!....until I finally refused to stop listening to them on You Tube, and again after a few weeks it worked, like carbs etc the mind takes time to readjust/forget and move on to different things/thoughts. Amen to that!

    I am a keto induced mess right now. I have tried keto off and on for a year but it has just been an up and down roller coaster. I try hard for a day or two but then the symptoms hit; headache, tired, not sleeping. etc. I have five littles to make meals for and the confusion and stress of not knowing what to make for myself always crumbles my resolve. I usually cave before I get to fat burning (ketosis).I start each day determined, have my bullet proof coffee, wait until lunch to have my eggs and then feed the kids their food but as soon as I have the least little sugar or even a keto treat, I can't resist and binge all the things I had been resisting. Then I am eating a huge amount of calories and fat and am making more of a mess of myself then before. I feel so confused about what it is healthy and not healthy now. i feel like I am doing my body more harm them good with all of this "knowledge"

    Hello, if you were in the past an athlete, did you use keto? I am distance runner and do not see how muscles could hold enough fuels without carbs. Does this keto work for any endurance athlete? Thanks

    • @drekberg
      @drekberg  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I did not know this when I was an athlete, but yes, you can do keto. Your body gets so good at using fat that it barely touches the glycogen stores. You can go longer because unlike glycogen, fat stores don't run out.

    Great advice as usual. My Achilles heel was white bread but I eased myself of that substituting with things i like (eggs for breakfast, mackerel salad for lunch etc) and then it's surprising how easy it was to cut the big ticket carb items out of your diet. You're right about progressive changes to as the next step was to skip breakfast and just have a black coffee or green tea. Coupled with a little more exercise I dropped from 14 stone to 12 stone in two months and felt a lot more energetic when doing long cardio workouts. Like you say it's all about a balanced approach diet, exercise, fasting when you bolt that all together you can make some huge improvements very quickly and it doesn't feel harsh on your system. I still like the odd beer though 🍺

    Dr Ekberg, I have been on keto for 2 years, when I check my ketones, they are sometimes low 0.4 to 0.6, and sometimes it goes as high as 1.9. But I never went over 2.0. Is that to do with the amount of carbs i take? Is ketone level an absolute way to ascertain the level of my ketosis, because sometimes after a workout, i find my ketone drops. Can you throw some light in this for everyone as well?

    Dear Dr. Ekerg : All my life I craved for the sweet; especially after taking food or early morning.... and I used to take quite a lot of sugar. Now I have been on Keto Diet for about 70 days quite successfully ..... lost about 10 kg. (about 22 pound) but recently I truly crave for sugar and resultantly started taking a little..... why is that happening to me? How to fight back this crave of sugar? Isn't it so that my body now needs sugar? Please suggest how to stop taking sweet, especially after the food.
