The Lotus 98T was absolutely terrifying and a great example of why this era of F1 was so dangerous, albeit entertaining and gratifying. You hear a lot of talk about how the new engines sound weak and complaints about the halo and officiating but honestly I'd trade loud, twin turbo insane revving V6s and V10s for no dead drivers in a heartbeat. We lost so many incredible people during the "loud, scary sounding and super fast" era; and yeah, I absolutely love auto racing and my ultimate dream is to lap the Nürburgring but you have to ask, was it really worth it? Was it really worth the lives of people like Senna, Ratzenberger, Villeneuve, etc? I'm sure their loved ones would say no. I'm sure the vast majority of F1 fans would agree. It's not worth it now either.

We were lucky to have been alive when this was live and Formula One was. Now that it is no more, we are lucky that we have more time to tidy up, do the garden and bung a nice pork roast in the oven. In this way, the fact that Grand Prix racing is gone is a good thing, not a bad thing.
Perhaps, the man who has suffered most is Verstappen, since he is the best driver since Schumacher, and there is nothing and nowhere suitably commensurate to his talent in which to compete.

Lighter cars (only 540 kgs), tires that can take a beating, dragster-like straight-line speed & the badass driving of the man himself😁
Bring back 500kg N/A F1 cars with low grip tires and refueling. That’ll do as much of a favor for the drivers as it would for the fans & would make grand prix cars look alive & fast again.

That's really a great question clark. I am going to assume you are talking about the '86 Lotus-Renault vs the '88 McLaren-Honda that won 15/16 races.
Apologies if I am telling you something you already know, but the rules of F1 - specifically technical regulations related to the cars themselves - change a lot from year to year. From 1986 to 1988, the main changes were a reduction in allowed fuel (220 litres to 195 to 150), and a reduction in engine boost pressure from unlimited in 1986 to 4 bar in 1987 and to 2.5 bar for 1988.
The net effect of this for turbocharged engines was the loss of 250-300hp in race trim and a significantly larger drop in qualifying (because of the loss of qualifying engines/boost. Renault, for example, used to block off their wastegates entirely for qualifying, allowing the engines to run as much boost as they could generate in 1985/6.)
In addition to this, during 1986 F1 had two main tyre suppliers, so both Pirelli and Goodyear were supplying the softest tyres they believed could be used effectively. In 1988, F1 had standardized on Goodyear as the sole supplier, meaning the company was able to provide spec tyres as they no longer had a competitor to beat. There were also changes to allowed sizes of wings on the cars in an effort to further reduce cornering speeds and other items.
The loss of 'that much' horsepower makes fairly comparing the cars' performance (1986 Lotus-Renault 97T to McLaren Honda MP4/4 from 1988) next to impossible.
FWIW I dug out some reference books for the years in question and the fastest race laps for Senna (in 1986) or Senna/Prost (in 1988) at the same circuits with substantially the same weather were on average about 2-2.5 second quicker for the 1986 car. There were some aberrations, however. At Spa the pole time was significantly quicker in '88 than in '86 and the race fast lap was less than 1 second slower in '88 than it had been in '86. At Imola, Prost's sister McLaren 1988 set the fastest race lap at more than a second quicker than Senna's '86 fast lap in the Lotus.
If the 1988 car had been allowed to use the same boost level and tyres as the 1986 Lotus, there is little doubt it would have been much faster. But absent controlled conditions (including not only regulations but weather) it is very difficult to make accurate comparisons. Despite the huge loss of power in qualifying, on average the lap times were not massively different across the field from 1987 to '88. At pure power circuits (like Monza) the difference was more than 2.5 secs. As stated above, at Spa and a few other circuits the fastest race laps were comparable.
The 1987 Williams-Hondas (running in much closer power and fuel configuration to the 1986 cars than the 1988 cars were allowed) were very much faster than the 1986 Lotus-Renault Senna is in here.
      Hope this helps!
