I remember seeing the highlights back in 91' and the commentator said that due to the positioning of the line, it was quicker to spin on that last corner. So, it was deliberate
I seem to remember it was a calculated gamble. Although it wasn’t a planned spin per se, the position of the finish line made a qualifying lap worth maxing out the end of the lap to such an extent that a spin was likely.
Absolute precision, love it. It reminds me a bit of the piquet qualy lap at brands hatch. He was similarly precise around the back part of the track, especially around the turns with blind entry points. Give it a look if you haven't seen it.
I remember reading at the time that Ayrton had decided that he would push too and past what he considered the limits of the car and himself in that last corner because he knew he could get the pole even if he had an accident. I have no idea if that is true, but if it is, it speaks of his dedication and determination to do everything he could to achieve his goals. The track layout was changed for the next race, so I like to think it is true and the French were determined to stop Ayrton beating Alain Prost. RIP Ayrton ❤
How incredible. Wish I were alive to see these eras, but this will do. The gnarl that thing has, and Senna blipping the throttle thru the corners…👨🏼🍳’s 💋
The way you can hear him feathering the throttle in the turns is so cool. I’m convinced that’s one of the main things that made him fast, he picked up speed in the corners by not lifting completely.
Exactly. If you saw his throttle trace from a testing lap, he brakes very late but not for very long on entry. Then, he'd stab at the throttle through the corners, controlling the back of the car that way, which enabled him to carry more speed through the corner. Mansell had a different style, brake late, but take a shallower or tighter line to the apex, controlling the back of the car with the throttle and his upper body strength.
I well remember it, but I almost forgot about it.... This one lap, even after so many years, gives more emotions than the entire season today. And that typical Senna "bumping" on the gas pedal in tight corner . Very aggresive driving style. Still love to watch...I'm glad I was interested in this sport back then, because there's nothing to watch in that boring, poor, modern f1 now...
1991 was Senna's last season "at the top". 1991, Williams and Mansell were already challenging Senna and McLaren. But, the 1992-93 seasons were already pure Williams dominance.
Ittalian law said that any death at a sporting event. The event must be cancelled. The day before Senna's death. Roland Ratzenberger died. His death was on impact. But was only anounced later at the hospital so event would not be cancelled. Had they done the right thing, history might have been different. But our reality is as a result of many what if's.
What a champion he was and such a joy to watch. I love Senna, but I always find it amusing how much he advocated for driver safety while driving a car that promoted cigarettes.
Prost's race only focusing on race day. Once he even joked about him just being quick in one lap but of course, for once in a life time, Senna been quick on every lap
@theiceman7590 I'm sorry I was confused by the photo. I thought it was the US grand prix. I liked Alain Prost's driving style. He didn't push the car to the limit and he knew how to win the race. Piquet, Senna, Lauda, Mansell, it was the golden era of Formula 1 back in 80s.

@@lucasnunes7861I think that’s exactly what happened there…
The spin of Senna is rare.
always pushing that limit
Not that rare - his fearlessness made him fast - he often pushed past the limit in practice to know where it was….

You can almost feel the effort he is putting in. The golden age of F1.
0:20 - look at where his left wheel is on turn-in! On the absolute limit of the track.
Genius.
I wouldn't call it genius.

Even the gear shifts sound great!
I love those old VHS recordings. I made in the past lot of VHS recordings too.
The sound of the V12. That´s love ;D

No they don’t, you are just nostalgic, I feel the same and you have every right to do so.

He was not happy driving the crappy McLaren Ford in 1992 - they lost 100 hp when Honda left F1 at the end of 1991.
