And yes, they are a bit pricey but I am a strong believer in good infrastruture on our homestead here and though they are not cheap, from what you revealed in your video here, the feeder will prove to be well worth it. Next year, I will be expanding our chicken runs and chickens, all I can see is how awesome these feeders and the waterers will be. Thanks again. Wayne
OK. I just bit the bullet as you say. I ordered the 40lbs feeder with your discount. I think I mentioned before, I'm on a mountain here in North Eastern TN. Mountain storms have raised havoc with my tractor supply chicken feeder. Most recently and I'm tired of the stress and waisting feed/money. Turning all into mush. Yuck. Thanks for the update! Always good to know how a product works after the initial "honeymoon period." I'm interested in your feed choice. With a mix of laying hens and roosters, are you able to feed them all one feed? The "Directions on the Package" say that layer feed is just for laying hens. Roosters shouldn't have all that calcium. But I'm a rebel, I suppose. I haven't noticed any ill affects for my rooster. When I tried having oyster shell on offer, he was the first one to try it out for the ladies, as always.
Excellent question! I do feed a layer pellet which both my hens and roosters eat. You’re absolutely right though, roosters have different dietary needs than hens. Since my birds free range, I don’t put much thought into it. My roosters appear fat and healthy ☺️

Wow I was just thinking about these yesterday. I'm glad they are working for you. But yeah ouch. Actually they are 225 but currently on sale for 195. I guess in the long run they will pay themselves off but I don't usually have that much on hand week to week. I'm hoping to build my own watering system but yeah I may save up as I'd like something easy like this eventually. You chickens are so lovely. Hum, perhaps a brick so the babies can stand at one of the ports? Probably would not work for bantams either unless you have a step for them. I have two bantams in my flock.
A step of some kind might help the small ones…..never thought about that! I guess since I already had the chick feeder/waterer it was my go-to. I fully expect my chickens to be molting soon, so I’m hoping they’ll get their beautiful fall plumage soon but thanks for the compliment ☺️
@@pretendfarm Oh mine are starting to molt. I'm starting to see feathers too. I put little stone steps to the pool where some have learned to go in to cool off.

The best feeder I've ever used is the trough with a reel bar. My chickens don't toss out any feed. I bring it into the house at night and carry it back out in the morning.
What about when the temps drop? Do the nipples freeze?
They definitely would. I’m thinking that using a trough heater would prevent that, but to be honest my chickens know to go in the pig pen and drink from their bowls if all else fails. Now I kinda want to get a heater just to see if it stays functional….stay tuned! 😅
I’ve heard using a fish tank heater works to keep the water from freezing. This is my first winter with chickens so I’m still learning.
I went outside every two hours today to check their water. We have the little cups and they freeze within the two hours. We have been in the high teens todays
@@michellebradley3189 the cup’s definitely won’t work with those temperatures. They do make 1.5 gallon waterers within built in heaters. You can get them for around $50 bucks. Also I’ve been told the heated dog bowls work great. Best of luck!

Can you get them in Australia?
They’re made by a very small company here in the states. I highly doubt they would ship them overseas, but if they did I’m sure it would cost a small fortune! They make an 80 lb. feeder that would probably suit your needs better because you have way more chickens than me. I just don’t know how to tell you to go about getting one. Sorry 😞

@@pretendfarm I will definitely investigate, but Australia unfortunately doesn’t have much of a manufacturing industry, so most stuff comes from china anyway😂 but I will definitely look into it
How many layers per feeder?
It really boils down to how often you want to have to refill. I have had 30 chickens eating from this feeder. Even then it lasts a week and nobody goes hungry. My chickens also free range so I’m sure that helps.
@@pretendfarm Thanks, we have 25 and they tend to squabble over the feeder in the morning so I was curious about the limited number of dispensers for each feeder.
@@johnearly1727 that’s where the pecking order takes effect. Not everyone can eat at once, but there is plenty of food for them all…just some have to wait their turn. I noticed the same thing with my previous feeder. Have a happy new year!
