- Its been almost one year since I first built my chicken orchard and overall I am quite pleased with how it turned out. I am overall quite happy with how it came out and in today's video I talk about some updates and upgrades I am making as well as what I would have done differently.

My life is like Jacques' chicken coop, not the Epic homestead chicken coop. Although the homestead one is insanely good, the Jacques DIY coop is humble and has a lotta personality still

My chickens used to have access to my orchard, but they never seemed to bother it too much. They do like to scratch around, but nothing was ever damaged. You could place rocks around the base and that would help keep them out. I have a sand box and add some DE in it. And fyi I wasted years not buying Elector PSP for the lice/mites. It's super expensive but wow...wiped the problem out in one application. I had about 30 birds with recurring lice and mites, and to give that many a bath or individually spray them was backbreaking lol.

Lol - and once again, you put it in a corner and effectively blocked access to most of the waterports. Love the unit itself, and the food one. Great to see an update on the coop and run. Greetings from New Zealand!

Its because I want to make sure their enclosed run has enough space for when we leave them locked up and the new one still leaves 4 open ports which is plenty.
@@jacquesinthegarden the unit is on a spike, takes up almost no floor space (not like the old unit did), and chickens are short, so wouldn't really be in their way no matter where it was (basically same concept as one hung from the ceiling). If it is any consolation, it's alway my first instinct to put things in the corners too - lol.The units are really great, fab design. I have watched your coop build video a couple of times, really like it, quite inspiring, and of course love all the garden videos 😊 Cheers.

2 years ago I planted out my chicken run with an orchard. And now that it’s spring here in Australia they are all old enough to bear fruit (but too young for a full load so I will thin this [one and only] year), and the scent of the flowers wafting down to the house is beautiful!
I planted apple, orange, lime, mandarin, pear, a fig and two peaches. They are accompanying a mature Mayer lemon tree that has been going gangbusters for years. I’m just about to put in some thornless blackberries and I think I’ll be calling it done.
Am super looking forward to hot summer afternoons where my kids can just go up to the orchard and grab a piece of fruit after school.
Poor chickie babies! The diatomaceous earth seems like a good fix. I've seen wild birds lay on an ant hill, and the ants will come up in their feathers and eat the parasites.

That's the coolest looking silo I've ever seen.
As for the trees and chickens, I've seen chickens roost up the tree branches (big, established trees), you might want to prepare for that when your trees have full grown. But other than that, the chicken orchard looks amazing yet very humble
Thank you for the idea of the concrete mixing tub! I only have 3 hens, but I'm up in Northern CA where with rain, clay soil, and a very small "orchard", there's not a lot of dust bathing potential!

One suggestion on why your figs might be doing just OK planted in the raised surrounds... If I'm not mistaken, Figs have a shallow root system, much like an avocado, that like to spread feeder fingers out wide under a thick layer of mulch. I know this is unsolicited and you know infinitely more than I do about gardening. Just thought I'd share... Thanks as always for your videos; enjoyable as usual and gives me something to aspire to.
That is an interesting thought, I think largely its my lack of irrigation and will to water them enough haha, mostly I think that because figs also classically do well in containers but it probably doesn't help!

It looks like you are using burlap in the tree rings. Does it deter the chickens from scratching in the tree ring by the trunk?
Don’t know if you saw the chicken orchard install, but they did put some chicken wire in the tree beds. Don’t know about burlap, but it looks like he filled them up with the natural soil.
Like Christine said I originally added wire mesh and through mulch on top but over time they dug out all the mulch and started to dig at the roots. In response I got some old used coffee bags and cut them to fit to form a mulch as well as barrier to digging. I got to say it has been holding up well!
@@jacquesinthegarden We have various fruit trees in our run and did a wire circle around the base and used wood chips around the trees. It protected against the chickens, but us too. I'll give the burlap a try. We have a bunch of it because a coffee place gives us the used coffee grounds for our compost and they also give us a bunch of burlap sacks.
@@anneainsworth6067 that’s awesome. I hope it works for you. I asked my local dunkin doughnut, and my Starbucks for their used grounds for my compost and they looked at me like I was crazy. Basically said they throw them away and if I want them there’s the dumpster.

Growing up in Alabama every once in a while my family would just go out and put down diatomaceous earth everywhere that had sand. It would kill off the mitrs, sand fleas and red ants ect. Just buy a big bag and maybe once every 2 or 3 months toss it around. Make sure to add it to their sand bathing area. Problem solved before it developed. Sorry you had to go thru that. Also put them a covered area out of rain to bathe in. Ours was under their coop.

Yes trees most definitely know what they're doing, but, modern citrus, and a lot of other fruit trees have been so selectively bred that we, as their stewards need to have a hands in helping and guiding their growth. We messed with them, so know we need to rescue them sometimes. 🙂 Just randomly found this channel while watching bonsai vids. Looks like southern California of some flavor? Cool cool, subbed!

Ok, where is a good place to find good spring chicks that you'd recommend? I have the room and really want to start a coop this year.
Hi Jacques! Love your videos! We live in San Jose, zone 9b and have 3 chickens: Lucy, Della & Doris (Movie Stars, LOL). We are currently upgrading the space for them, covering the area with deer netting to protect them from avian flu. I want to plant some dwarf fruit trees in that 6' High 8' x 20' area and keep the dirt in the Berties rings. Is there an easily obtainable landscape cloth that is safe for and from chickens to cover the dirt and mulch in the rings?
What are the tiles behind where you put the sand for the chickens? Is that just storage?
Probably replacement roof tiles if I had to guess.
It is replacement roof tiles and came with the house, would cost a fortune to get rid of so we just leave it as is.

Jacque, I'm fascinated by the chicken orchard idea & would like to add a fruit tree into my chicken run plan. I only have room for one fruit tree, I think. I live in a Zone 5 climate. Question: what would be the most healthful/chicken fave fruit that tolerates Z4/5 that comes in dwarf/semi-dwarf range, do you think? Any ideas? I live in SE Idaho & currently have 2 apple varieties, 1 plum, 1 cherry, 1 apricot, 2 pears, & 2 hazelnut trees in my garden. Will also be adding grapes & a hardy issai kiwi in the spring. What fruit do chickens love most? 😄

No we didn't want to do that so instead we made sure their outdoor run was enticing enough and we also have it surrounded by netting so they couldn't get out even if they want to.

We’ve had chickens for many years and not once has a bird escaped. We did have 3 of our newest flock sit on the boundary fence once, but my awesome neighbour just shoo’ed them back down to our side again.
What is the area covered with round terra cotta near the block wall? Love your channel.
Those are just spare roofing tiles that were here with the house, this is just off to the side of the chicken run.
Did you drill holes in your tub so it doesn't fill with water, could get pretty nasty. I live in northern California so I know we don't get a lot of rain but it does rain. Love your channel and thanks for all the hard work you do to share information.

Many years ago, I had a cockatiel that had tapeworms--vet said hewas probably bred in an outdoor aviary & was exposed to wild bird droppings. Do ya'all prophylactically deworm the gals regularly
I haven't had to do that yet, we do "inspect" their droppings occasionally and haven't seen anything concerning.
San Diego local here! I'm just getting into gardening but I live in an apartment on the 4th floor so I need to get a lot of dirt. Where's the best place, locally, to buy soil? I went to Walter Andersen and it was all potting soil. I just need bulk, cheap inorganic dirt...
I believe city farmers has bulk dirt!
Jacques are the raised beds around the trees necessary? Could the trees just be planted in the ground?
Established trees would be fine without the surrounds, but chickens would dig and scratch and ruin the roots on any newly planted trees. You might be fine with a chicken wire covering on the ground, but it would depend on the tenacity of your chickens.
Just like BethWood said it is to ensure the chickens do not entirely dig out the roots and kill the tree. You could try to lay down a bunch of wire on the ground instead but aesthetically I like this look and it also makes it easier to water only the trees without getting all the soil wet.

New water silo - why stake so near the corner ? Poor chickens can’t get round the back water dispensers 😢🐓
It is in the enclosed run so when we are out of town or have to leave them locked up I didn't want to take up all the space with the waterer. The way it is positioned still leaves about 4 ports easily accessible.
