Brékkek Kékkek Kékkek Kékkek! Kóax Kóax Kóax!
In the opening section of the Wake, Joyce quotes the famous croaking refrain from "The Frogs" by Aristophanes. I have included this as well as various other snippets of the text throughout the first "book" of this piece, from 0:10 - 2:09.
This first section, or "book," is divided into four 30-second sections, each corresponding to one of the four classical elements: Water, Earth, Air, and Fire. In each subsection, you can hear sounds which reflect the associate element, such as water splashing for "Water," wind chimes in "Air," and so forth. Each element also has an animal sound associated with it, which you can hear if you listen closely: frogs croaking in "Water," mice squeaking in "Earth," birds chirping in "Air," and children laughing in "Fire."
