    I have a Smith & Wesson M&P 15. Ran the weapon with the standard 3oz buffer, and the brass is electing at about 2 o'clock. Running the weapon with an H2, the brass is ejecting at about 3 o'clock to 3:30. Most civilian AR's are over ⛽

    I have a S&W carbine with the 16" barrel. I found the best recoil management, less barrel movement, and ejection to the 4 o'clock with this combination. I use a T-1 or H-1 buffer and a Red Springco spring. It is just a joy to shoot. It is very easy to stay on target. It handles any kind of ammo I put through it. I just wanted to pass this on.

    Can you guys help me out I recently changed my buffer and buffer spring on my DDM4V7 I switched out my standard H buffer and went with a H2 tungsten buffer I ordered from brownells and switched out my buffer spring and ordered one on blackout defense a carbine length spring now I took my new setup (by the way I also switched out my BCG to a sharps XPB) and now it’s either double feeding or it’s getting jammed and on the bullets you can see where the lugs on the BCG are striking the bullet when trying to cycle almost like the BCG is striking the top of the bullet has anyone had this issue and fixed it thanks !

    Great video series, especially for us new builders. Q: I just completed an AR build in 7.62X39, carbine gas system (my first build). I find with the adjustable gas block barely cracked open the bolt is locking back but the empties are being ejected to the 5 o'clock position. As I understand it this ejection position indicates under gassed. I suspect the stronger recoil of this cartridge VS 5.56 is over powering the buffer spring and I need to go to an H1 or H2. Does this sound right to you?

    • @brownells
      @brownells  7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      The assumption of the cartridge over powering the buffer spring is incorrect. Ejection of the spent cartridge at 4:30 to 6:00 o’clock is an indication of insufficient gas, meaning you need to open up the setting on your gas block and increase the amount of gas to get the brass to eject out at 3:00 to 4:30. If you install a heavier buffer, you will run into ejection problems.

    Why is buffer weight the first thing people change if a rifle is “over gassed”? If my 1911 is too snappy, I try different spring weights. Just curious about what’s different.

    If you're running an echo trigger the extra weight helps overcome the spring pressure from the trigger lock, mine needed an h2 before it became reliable

    I'm new to AR platform. Are there different spring weights to match the buffers, or is the spring there just to make the bolt close, and the weight of the buffer does all the work?

  • @mcinteer19
    @mcinteer19 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    If doesn’t reduce recoil, but reduces the effect of the felt recoil on the shooter. The buffer and spring are absorbing more of the force of recoil.

  • @hairydogstail

    Adding buffer weight to an over gassed system is a band-aid on a much bigger problem. It is better to adjust the gas with a smaller gas tube port or an adj gas block..

    For 5.56/.223 standard fixed stock Rifle Length buffers weigh about 5 ounces so I use an H2 ( 4.6 ounce) or H3 (5.2 ounce) Carbine length buffers on rifles fitted with collapsing stocks and 18" or longer rifle length barrels. Standard 3 ounce Carbine buffers are OK with 16" length barrels and H Buffers work well with best with 16" & 14.5" Barrels. Anything shorter then go with an H2 or H3 buffer. Rifles and carbines in larger calibers require even heavier buffers. HTH.

    I'm building a 10.5" carbine length 5.56 that will mainly shoot Russian .223 but need it to be most reliable when using 5.56 NATO for home defense, is there one weight buffer that will be equally reliable or what buffer would be most reliable for either rounds?

    • @brownells

    I am planning a 300 BLK build within the next 6 months or so. There is a large spectrum of possible loads available that makes this round interesting. I have seen data from less than 900 f/sec to more than 2400 f/sec. and bullet weight from 110 - 225 grains. Do you think that one buffer set up could handle this, or should I consider two, one for the upper end and one for the lower end ?

    • @ZERO-F2G-
      @ZERO-F2G- 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you plan on shooting any amount of subsonic suppressed, you will want a pistol length gas system, and a carbine buffer. That combo cycles the heavy subs reliably both suppressed and un-suppressed, also cycles the lighter supersonic loads suppressed equally reliable.
      Un-supressed I only shoot 125's and it is still fine for me with a carbine buffer, haven't tried subs without a can as that makes no sense.

    • @3rwparks3
      @3rwparks3 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ZERO-F2G- Thanks for the info. I obviously need to explore this subject a little more. What I have found all seem to lead to the pistol length gas system. I am most interested in the sub part of this round with the possible addition of a can. I think this will be a fun project and quieter days at the range.

    The pistol has the heaviest buffer because it has the shortest suspension. Aka buffer tube and spring and buffer length. Short suspension, heavy buffer. You feel a lot of recoil this way. Need to lengthen suspension so buffer doesn't bottom out and give you that kick. I'd stick with the heavier buffer and longer buffer tube and a carbine spring for best results. A carbine spring has more room between its coils to allow for more movement without bottoming out. Once a spring bottoms out, or any other part bottoms out, then the spring looses its functionality and all remains energy its felt in the kick or recoil, while putting the bolt and frame under great stress. Bottoming out the bolts buffer system is bad.

    Hello, greetings from the Czech Republic. I like your videos. I have a question for you about this... If I use a heavier buffer, do I have to use a harder buffer spring? Or can I keep the original spring? Thank you very much for the answer

    • @petrhenig7789
      @petrhenig7789 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know if I'm thinking correctly. But if I put a heavier Buffer, it probably compresses the spring much more than a lighter Buffer? I'm just wondering if I put a heavier Buffer and keep the original spring if I have a problem, I can destroy something and so on... I own a Ruger AR 556 and our CZ market is pretty limited when it comes to these things. Buffer is not a problem to find..but springs are more complicated or very expensive

    Okay I have a full length M16 butt stock using the rifle buffer. Are there different weights rifle buffers? My rifle is a M16 A1 clone, 20” barrel with rifle gas system. Just curious if there are different rifle system buffers. Considering buying a Rare Breed FRT15 trigger and there are recommendations for using a heavier buffer. A carbine buffer is an easy replacement.

    shooting 5.56 from a mid length gas system, would you recommend an h2 buffer to smooth out recoil?

    • @mikeingeorgia1
      @mikeingeorgia1 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Steven Conner , I've tried a variety in a mid-length system and it does seem to be better. I eventually went with H3 because I figure if it's the same weight as a rifle buffer, and the rifle length system works just fine, it's good for the mid-length too. Although, with roughly 6 weights to choose from, it's a pricey experiment if you have to buy all the different sizes.

    The Spikes ST-T2 works in all my 14.5 and 16 in ARs perfect. It is 4.0 Oz. Typical H1 is 3.8oz, and H2 is 4.6oz. The Spikes is a good one.

JP Industries, Sprinco, or geissle will be a better improvement. I run the JP, it's quiet with the st1. I'll never go stock ever again.

    I have an AR-15 rifle length tube and a rifle length buffer system. The gas block is tuned perfectly. Ejects the casing at a 4:00 position. But my ball carrier group will not catch and cycle the next bullet. So my AR-15 effectively only fires one bullet at a time. Will a lighter buffer solve the problem or will a heavier buffer help it cycle better?

    Hi! Question for you - I had a job once where we used AR-15's. When I'd go to the range for training or to qualify I loved the AR's because the ones we used were so easy to shoot and didn't have recoil kick hardly at all. When I quit that job I bought my own AR-15 and this dang thing kicks! It almost kicks to the point where's it's not fun to shoot. Would a heavier buffer help or is there something else I can adjust? Thanks!!

      What AR's were you running at the range and which one did you buy? What caliber/barrel length is it?

    • @cjevans2746
      @cjevans2746 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@skyofstorms I want to say the one at work was Smith & Wesson (not sure of the length and I left there back in 2014, been a while) and the one I had bought was a Sig Sauer M400. I know the Sig is shorter than the one I had at work though, but the Sig sure kicks.

       @CJ Evans Heavier buffers cut down on felt recoil a good bit, especially for shorter barrels. Odinworks has an adjustable buffer which will allow you to try multiple buffer weights without having to buy multiple buffers. Armaspec also makes their Stealth Recoil Spring assembly which I'm going to try in my 12.5" pistol build which has built in recoil dampening due to the dual spring assembly. A suppressor/compensator/muzzle break will also help with that. If it's a pistol and you're using a brace, many braces aren't very comfortable for shouldering but the SBA3 and SBA4 are rubberized which could also help or you could SBR it. I had a whole message typed up with links n stuff but youtube hates that for some reason. Shorter barreled rifles by nature have more felt recoil because they are lighter and get a less complete powder burn. The gas from shorter AR's also has less dwell time which, unless tamed with a heavier buffer(or buffer spring combo like the Geissele Super 42)/adjustable gas block, tend to come from the factory overgassed, kick more noticeably and have more parts wear overall.

      @cjevans2746 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@skyofstorms Thank you for that! I'll have to the one you mentioned or buy a heavier buffer. I even thought about selling my AR and buying one more like I used at work. I know a lot of people online say AR's don't kick, but this shorter AR sure kicks. Thank you again!

    I ask this question but nobody ever answers. If my 3oz weight has near perfect ejections, should I just be happy or should I increase the gas and go with a heavier weight?

    • @PewLand
      @PewLand หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      If it's gassed correctly with a lighter buffer you should leave it how it is. You will always feel less recoil with a lighter reciprocating mass. The only reason heavier buffers exist is to combat violent bolt velocity or to slow down the cyclic rate for slower full auto rpm.

    Additionally some companies make buffers that are in between H and H II. And carbine and H. For custom gun tuning.

      Reduce your weights. Probably aren’t getting enough gas in the system, so reducing mass may make it easier
