- In this video we're comparing The Beach Boys and Ol' 55, and their renditions of Little Saint Nick. We haven't heard this Beach Boys tune, and it's obvious nod to Little Deuce Coupe, so this should be interesting. Also, we don't know anything about Ol' 55. So, this is a learning experience for us. Please let us know who you think did it better. Enjoy!

Oh my.. I forgot that Ol'55 even did this song. It's been so long since I even thought of them.
I'll give to The Beach Boys for being the experts in this style of music, though I must admit that it was refreshing to see Frankie and the boys on your channel.
I used to see Ol'55 back in the day. Always a fun, positive time.
One good thing that came with moving to England in the mid 70's is that I got to miss out on Ol'55. England had a lot of cheesy bands like Showaddywaddy and MUD (sorry, they were cheese.. high view count or not), but they were on their way out by '79. Ol'55 were still hanging there in 1980, trying to sell their brand of 50's pop to all us kids. But all we wanted was British New Wave and sexy Aussie pub rock (INXS, Icehouse..).
Speaking of which, original videos of ''The One Thing'' and ''To Look At You''. Hope to see it in the new year! I love me some Susan Stenmark...
Showaddywaddy never took off in Australia. I remember them being on the 100th episode of Countdown, but they didn't interest anyone here in Australia. Ol'55 and Silver Studs were enough 50's revival for us.
🐕
@@liveitup67 Yeah, Pups. Silver Studs was another group I missed out on because of my time in England. I could only watch you Countdown kids going berserk for their rendition of ''Happy Days''. lol
@@VanessaSun-ls2kr I wasn't even there when they did ''Happy Days''. I was at home watching my sister having all the fun on TV. But they were a lot of fun. I watched some Top Of The Pops, and even though I enjoy the show, I feel a lot of the kids are controlled. We used to run amuck in the studio, and get told off by the Ted Emery and the floor staff. We'd make so much noise. But Top Of The Pops seemed to be more rigid and restrictive.
@@liveitup67 I think it has to do with who ever ran TOTP's. I remember when I came back to Australia in '79, I experienced a reverse culture shock, because the kids in Australia were different from kids in England. Kids in Australia were a lot more laidback and friendly, which I think had a lot to do with the weather. It was weird seeing kids on Countdown screaming and talking back at guests on the show. You would never hear the voices of the kids on Top Of The Pops. They usually just stood still, looking at a camera with an awkward grin. And the hosts never talked to the kids like Molly did. When I did Countdown in Sydney, I was still readjusting to being back in Australia, which meant I was the uptight and quiet girl amongst my rowdy mates. They knew they could get away with it yelling in the studio, but I was still cautious and scared of older figures.
But don't think that England lacked rowdiness. You got some very rough and tumble kids in England that yelled back at teachers and older people, but unlike Aussie kids, English kids were never light-hearted like Aussie kids were...
In a nutshell, Countdown was very Australian and TOTP's was very English.
I think that the best way I can sum it up.
@@liveitup67
Aussies probably never clicked the name Showaddywaddy comes from the doo wop fill in vocals..
Rubettes Showaddywaddy, Rubettes Showaddywaddy... Hence The Rubettes too !
Hey, Rock N Roll (stomp stomp stomp)
I'm beginning to feel like the old lady coming on here to tell stories of the good old days. I was seeing Ol'55 playing parties in the early 70's, and they really were a lot of fun. I never grew tired of them and their contemporaries, The Ted Mulry Gang.
You might like to put their version of 'Two Faces Have I' next to the original Lou Christie hit in one of your Wednesday shows in the future.
I'll choose Beach Boys' version, because I was a child/teen in the 60's, and The Beach Boys were probably more my wheelhouse than Ol'55.
Fantastic who did it better recommendation.
@@MrParksies Thank you
So typical of Countdown. The regular guests would often get into a chinwag, forgetting the cameras are on them until somebody nudges them.. lol
Charlie Don't Surf ! 🏄♂️ 🌊 💥
It always warms my heart to see a little bit of Countdown on your show. After all, it was my second home! And I was at that Ol'55 performance.. My little head's probably somewhere bopping away.
I have more of a liking for Ol'55's version, and it's not because I heard their version first. I feel Ol'55 put their hearts into the song, while The Beach Boys' version feels like they're just doing another Beach Boys number. I don't know for sure, but I speculate The Beach Boys were getting a little tired of their formula by the time they released ''Little St. Nick''.
Ol'55 loved the 50's and early 60's style, and you can hear it on their records. One of my favourite OL'55 songs is ''C'mon Let's Do It''. I don't know if it's a cover song or an impressive original - either way, I like the tune, so you can count it in as request from me.
Cheers,
Hayley
What about ''On The Prowl'' ?
@@kaitlynbatt_ That one too! Good song.
The Beach Boys are great of course, but I love Ol'55 ,so I'll give it to them. Great to see them on your channel. They were a fun 50's style band. On the prowl, Two faces have I & Feels like a Summers night are cool ones by them.
Beach ⛱️ Boys - No contest. ✅️
@@davidellis5141 exactly 💯
Ol'55 sound like they're having more fun with the song, and manage to make it sound like The Four Seasons.
From my experience, Frankie J Holden came across like the sort of guy that had a personality strictly for television.
Ol'55.. Never on the prowl for credibility.. just good old fashion fun. I'll go with their version.
I always liked them. Gotta love an old Countdown clip. They're always cute.
wow you found Ol 55.
You been "On the Prowl" or just looking for an Echo ?
You hear one Beach Boy song you have heard them all. Ol 55 for me, you need to check out On the Prowl, Two face have I, Looking for an echo. They were a fun 1950's styled band. Came out just after American Graffiti and Happy Days became popular.
And Silver Studs 😉
@@liveitup67 Geezus, I forgot about them. They reminded me of Lenny and Squiggy from Laverne and Shirley.
@@iankearns774 Ha, ha - They did look like them! The short Italian guy (the singer) died about 30 odd years ago of some kind of drug mishap.
I'm usually in agreement with Hayley, the Countdown kid, but in this case I'm going for The Beach Boys. Frankie J. Holden grinded my gears back in the day, and hearing his high pitch tenor irritates me. The sax player is Wilbur Wilde, who would go on to Jo Jo Zep & The Falcons and then be a regular cast member on Aussie TV variety show Hey Hey It's Saturday. Along with Wilbour, Red Symons and Shirley Straun of Skyhooks, Frankie J. Holden also became a TV personality down here in Australia.
Thanks. We just had a long discussion on how the shelf life of musicians is relatively short, unless you go journeyman or hit for the fences (superstars). But to see them when they shined...
@@hanierfamily Not everybody can be Cold Chisel. Apparently, 35,000 people attended their sold-out concert at Victoria Park in Ballarat just recently.
One true Aussie (Kiwi, in fact) journeyman is Max Merritt. He had a hit in Australia called 'Slipping Away'. Before that song, he spent twenty years recording and touring Australia and various countries. He even lost an eye in a road accident during one of his many tours. Now that's a man that earned the journeyman title.
I'm a bit biased, as I am a Classic Holden person. But I liked Frankie J Holden and ol'55 better.
Nice Sax! Only thing was the lead singer of the Beach boys was much better than Frankie J Holden and his mate in this song. They had 2 lead singers but still could not deliver.
The beach boys lead singer was so nice to hear and the way he changed up his voice, wow so talented.
The second one reminds me of Freddie and the dreamer's, I'm surprised I liked it better than the beach boys,🏴✌️
Frankie J. Holden was born 45 years old. The guy's always looked like someone's awkward dad trying to be hip with the kids.
He's sort of like the Ugly Dave Grey of Aussie rock ('n' roll). Always there, grinning away, taking the cool out of the room.
I got no opinion on either version...
😆Ouch! That's mean.. But I get what you mean.
Ol55s just for me
Countdown had a lot of novelty props. The snow was a standard! The worst part of Countdown was the dry ice on the stage. The taste would stay with you for days. 🤮
Uh uh … ‘Seasonal ‘ shoehorning bollox alert 🚨 - ‘door slamming’

@@jaymacgee_A_Bawbag_Blethering hey jay you watching the big fight on sat night fury v usyk #2 ,🏴✌️
@ I am indeed , Fury will be retired by Sunday morning , never rated the guy - I just think it’s a bad time for heavyweights right now James when a cruiser weight is battering them all , Usyk for me , stoppage before round 9 👌
👍🏴
@jaymacgee_A_Bawbag_Blethering that's a fair clever prediction, I agree, you know it, I know it, and so does Tyson fury, and that's why IMHO, fury stops usyk inside 6 , if he doesn't he's going be in trouble around 8-9, I think usyk is a unit of a fighter, what a complete athlete he is , but like you say a blown up cruiser weight, he will have to pepper fury with big multi shot combinations, fury only needs to touch him " once" , but I'm looking right forward to it pal 🏴✌️
@ aye a good critique James , I predict Fury will grab his big bag of cash after his defeat and walk away . Hes had a good run and can be proud of what he’s done , but I always take the view ‘ how would so n so have done against Lennox Lewis ?’..
Lewis was a grade above anything nowadays imho
👍🏴
Time has made Ol'55 one of the least appreciated Countdown bands. They were huge in their day. I like their version more than the first version, though I'm sure BB's version is the superior one.
lol.. I was a cool chick that was checking out Midnight Oil and Cold Chisel in 1976, and Ol55 weren't cool. I hated Ol'55! I saw them live a lot, because they were an easy band to see. They'd do outdoor gigs at parks in Sydney, and Frankie J. Holden would do his crowd rousing stuff, and the rest of the band would delivery quality renditions of older tunes. I'm with Hayley! I like Beach Boys, but I'm not hearing ''heart'' in their version. Maybe the recording is slowed down???
Hey! Those girls are dancing just fine! If you want to see weird dancing, check out the way Sharpies danced in the 70's! Wooh! 😅
Would delivery 🤔
@@Robbo766 ''Deliver'' you gronk. I made a typo!
@@kaitlynbatt_ 😆Gronk? I haven't been called that since the 70's! 😆
Both of these were much the same so, difficult to choose between them.
Both are awful, but The Beachboys are less awful
OL'55 were never the band I'd write home about, but I enjoyed them none the less. They were very competent and committed to their shtick, but were never raw nor adventurous like Jo Jo Zep & The Falcons or The Sports. Bands like OL'55 were a dime a dozen in England, which is why I always thought of them as a good for backyard barbeques, but no more than that. I don't have an opinion on either version because I never liked ''Little St. Nick''.
That's not snow in the Countdown studio! That's another type of white stuff that the ABC awarded Countdown with for giving the station a good year. 😆
🙄 Countdown was a nice, innocent, wholesome show for kids and teenagers.
It was harmless baking soda trickling from the ceiling. 😠 Nothing sinister.
@@I_was_a_Countdown_Kid-75-83 How do you know?
@@Robbo766 ABC dealing with Mr Asia 😎
@@kaitlynbatt_ Apparently Dragon were doing deals with Mr Asia.. or had some association with the bloke.
@@Robbo766 I heard about that, but Dragon have always denied it. I used to see Paul Hewson walking around Kings Cross; sometimes on the nod. They had a lot of dealers around them, so I don't think they needed Mr Asia to give them a daily dose.
Well, I'll be honest, I did avoid watching this. Not a fan of the Beach Boys or Ol' 55. Now, the harmonies on both were great, that's the only positive thing I can say. To be honest, I'm not big on Christmas songs.
