I miss my VW race cars. Well, I still have the last two. Haven't seen the light of day since 1987. They were for oval track racing in Michigan, USA. Also ran some special events in Canada, and Ohio. The older car was built from a '72 Karman Ghia, the last was built from the ground up, a full tube chassis. Mix of Mustang II, and hand - made front suspension, rack and pinion steering, 4wheel disc brakes, coil overs all around, 1835 CCs, twin Weber 44 IDF carbs, heads ported so big it needed custom modified intakes, open Stinger exhaust, only 1688 pounds, the minimum weight required for that engine size. With the weight in the back, set up was a little challenge, but it took off like a rocket with no wheel spin, 10" wide by 13" tires and wheels. That last one was awesome until bad gas wrecked the engine. I want to get a couple of stock engines, just so they move again for antique race car shows.

Back in my racing days, I built a 2400cc race motor (86mmx 101.6mm) scat case, carillo rods, superflo heads with offset valve guides, 48mm webers with the throats bored out to 52mm. With the 4 inch pistons there was no room inbetween the cylinders for air flow but worked anyway. Had to weld up the old head/cyl stud holes to remachine in the spread stud pattern. baja's are damn fun to ride. still need upped horsies though. even 2108 are a bit underpowered ( stock, wont say anything about upgraded ones ;) ) . mine has 2.5 N/A subbie powerplant (nothing fancy, but still better than 50 horsies right? ) and custom made cooling system. love that thing :) .

@@mickylawless1941 tnx :) . i was thinking about more powerful engine, but would have to ditch whole transmission/engine system (basically transplant whole engine with transmission and made all custom brackets and engine mounts and cooling) and it was just too much hassle to tackle with. maybe I'll do it one day (still have M54 from E39 in garage ), but for now, 150bhp is enough for lightweight car as it's bug. :)

Thanks for sharing. Just browsing through the comments. These are not Subaru or even Porsche engines. Each engine has a distinct sound. These are how VW type 1 air cooled engines with twin down draft carburetors sound when spec’d. They are built for rallying where torque and reliability matters. In fact if you listen and watch closely the yellow bug revs slightly higher. If you search TH-cam you’ll find modded air cooled normally aspirated VW engines that rev higher and sound even better but they are used in short burst drag racing.
Back to this rally version. These are super beetles with McPhersons up front and trailing arm suspensions (no swing axles) in the rear that deliver much better handling. Handling even improves when shifting more weight like moving the battery up front and swapping rear fenders and trunk lid to fiberglass. Limited slip differentials keep wheel spin in check on the turns. I have to believe they probably converted the brakes to discs all around to handle the extra power from stock. Anyway love these cars. I only wish I could afford to build one. They can get pretty expensive.
