Fantastic! It's easy to see why the bugs were popular in Baja back in the day! Very capable with just a little modification. And the dune buggy restarting almost mid-hill and still making it, just gold.
@@relentlessduckproductions8779 I can understand no mud tires but a all-season tire would be OK wouldn't it? The tires on most of the cars are smoothies, no wonder they couldn't get up the hill. It's OEM! Oh well, not important, enjoyed the video. The motorcycles ruled the hill, yea!!
Engine over the pulling tires always helps in conditions like these. My dad had an 85 Pontiac fiero, and it killed in snow and ice. That's why the bugs are doing so well here. Engines in the front with pulling tires in the rear doesnt do too well. But if the engine is over the driving tires its a win
Having the weight of the engine over the rear wheels helps with traction. Theres debates as for whether thin or wide tires are better but idk which is proven to be best. Could be theyre geared better too?
since its open diffs only is it allowed in the rules to yank up the hand brake to provide resistance to the free spinning wheel and possibly send some drive to the non spinning wheel when they are slowing to a stop?
classic example of 'the photo doesn't show how steep it is' - I'm a believer in that. The cars are sliding back down with all 4 wheels locked. If I were at the drawing board, I'd be trying to come up with a drivetrain that would detect slipping and respond with an instant reduction in wheel rpm, and I'd also try a suspension geometry that would move the whole wheel assembly forward (or backward?) or even laterally (probably inward for more weight) to see if that might help. Also, an instant reduction in air pressure in the tire might help. Needed would be a mechanism to return the pressure as soon as traction is regained. Could each wheel get a weight to accelerate up or down for traction.... I knew a guy back in the day who rigged cat litter feeds to each tire, big hopper in each fender and a cable pull system, for dealing with snow. We were skiers and nothing was going to stop us from reaching the ski hills when we wanted it. It absolutely worked, got us past all manner of other vehicles. Train engineers used to feed tiny amounts of sand to the rails just in front of engine wheels for grades on which overloaded trains couldn't get going because the drive wheels would just uselessly spin.
I’d love it if they had a sticker or graphic stating the tires being used. It seems to be a major factor as the bugs do well or fail like others I don’t think every case is driver error.
@@folgloretv hi there - it’s because the origin of the trial (early 20th century) predates 4x4 vehicles so to preserve the challenge the regulations do not permit. If 4x4 vehicles were allowed it would be easy! Thanks for asking
