  • The Southeastern United States is seeing a disproportionate number of new HIV cases, and the reason has a lot to do with stigmas around getting testing and seeking treatment. Marnina Miller contracted HIV in college, and those stigmas at first kept her quiet about her diagnosis. But now this young woman is an outspoken advocate for showing the world what it looks like to live a full life with HIV.

I have a feeling the guy who gave her HIV knew he had it and gave it to her. That’s why he disappeared and was no longer to be found after he left the clinic. God bless her for turning this into something positive.

Good for her for being so positive and having such a great attitude. With that being said, HIV has a stigma attached to it because it’s an incurable disease. It has nothing to do with her being black, overweight, poor or whatever else. People will always be scared about HIV because it’s terrible. To make it seem like there’s some kind of discrimination is ridiculous.

Man the ignorance and hate in this comment section is wild. There is a stigma against those with hiv and aids that has existed for as long as we have know about the disease people were afraid to even go near people with hiv because they believed they would catch it, obviously that’s not how it’s transmitted and we figured that a rather long time ago but the blatant ignorance of some still continues.

  • @RM-fo9qh

I think the stigma around multiple stds needs to be addressed more with things like HIV, herpes, and so on.
I knew an extremely wholesome girl that got herpes from the only man she’d ever been with. She felt her dating life would be over and was devastated. After researching it because of her, I started to see how stigmatized it was and how common HSV actually is and that it shouldn’t be shamed the way it has been.

    • @Janeway1269
      @Janeway1269 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@___MilkMan___ Yeah lucky for him but how dehumanizing for her. Herpes is so common that 1/4 to 1/3 of people have it anyway, and it hardly does anything to you in the long run; especially if you're a man. Women just have to worry about having an outbreak while giving birth, but outbreaks aren't very common. It's not worth throwing away an otherwise amazing mate.
Herpes rarely infects unless there's an outbreak and there's condoms. People are incredibly ignorant about STDs thus the stigma. Did you know herpes became common in Europeans as a biological response against the bubonic plague?
And which kind of herpes? You can have HSV1 or HSV2 in the genital OR mouth area, even though HSV2 is known as "genital herpes" while HSV1 is associated with cold sores. What is your friend going to do? Avoid everyone who gets a cold sore? LOL! Good luck!
This is why stigma continues and people start hiding their STD status. If anything the reason vaccines and treatment are coming out for Shingles (a herpesvirus), HIV, HPV and other things but you haven't heard about any for Herpes simplex one or two, is because of just how less of a threat or inconvenience they are!

I was tease relentlessly about sex because I have autism and all it done was push my sexual activities underground and being extremely secretive about them the point where I put off getting tested of STD's.
I only got tested a few days ago for the first time after a risky sexual encounter with a woman that happened in front of all my friends who started to put pressure on me to get tested once they realised she had chlamydia and watched me have sex with her.

Because governments and people won't pay for it/can't afford it. In the UK you can get prep on the NHS very easily thank god. I''m a gay guy but I don't use prep because I don't live the "hook up" life.

    • @tubester4567

Many homosexual males ignore taking precautions, including condoms and prep. Some gay men are on the downlow and hide their gay identity, In the US, 50% of gay black males are HIV positive.

@@retinapeg1846that means nothing. I have sex less than 10 times a year and was still infected. Take it. The stigma is worse than the disease. I’m healthy but it’s like I’ve been invaded 😩. I can’t find anyone being truthful, it’s like this fake positivity is so annoying. There is a LIVING thing inside me actively attempting to ruin my body and shut down my immune system. It feels like someone living in your basement in a cage that won’t die until you do. And you have to hope you have enough security to keep them locked in. But if you invite someone into your “home” you could also transfer this intruder. Who would want to go into someone’s home knowing there’s a murderer in their basement? Like we’re living with this virus but we were like everyone else before, we had our own fears, we shunned people, and now we’re living under the constant fear of exposure, social and medically. It’s like being gay in 1960. There’s few things in the modern era that carry this much stigma it’s literally debilitating. So, just take prep if you have access to it. Promiscuity is not the only cause of this illness.

Some people actually ignore medical care because they don’t want to deal with it or like her feel like they need to wait to die. Having someone openly discuss living with it happily must be extremely relieving for someone who possibly just found out and are dreading life.

@@bernardsloan5224 Stigma is a set of negative and often unfair beliefs that a society or group of people have about something. This isn’t the 1990s and prevailing societal view of HIV is that it is a deadly disease if untreated. This view is actually factual and neither negative or unfair so it shouldn’t be characterized as a stigma.
