man i wish i was him i only have an iphone 4 htc one iphone se 1 another iphone 4 ipod touch 4 ipod touch 7 ipad mini 1 macbook pro 2014 13 inch and literally anything else
I used my nexus 4 without a case for more than 6 months but a few weeks ago I shattered the back of it so now I'm a bit more careful XD (at least the front screen didn't crack)
+TheMysteriousKnight Wrong. A guy I know had a tempered glass screen protector and it saved his Galaxy phone. The protector got smashed but my actual screen is fine.
TheBannana Dude I dropped a phone with a glass screen protector and the screen protector and actual phone shattered Then another day I dropped my iPhone from a similar height Screen first by accident and the screen didn’t break Can someone please explain this
Especially now that near every flagship has a glass back panel, which is significantly safer with a sturdy case. It also helps that there is a much greater selection of very well designed and aesthetically pleasing cases now than there was 4 years ago.
I put a Speck Candyshell on my phone then when I dropped it on the road, the screen shattered. Obviously most cases don't protect your phone from shattering.
+CommentMasterBoom running, exercising and monitoring with the phone. Armbands get sweaty and hold the sweat against the phone. Metal and salt... I use an otterbox defender now for my phone.
i disagree bud, may be you don't care about breaking your device cuz u have tons of them, but people who buy a device on 2 year contracts, kinda wanna keep em for atleast 2 years before they can get a new device. i use a generic flip case on my note 4 edge and it has saved my phone atleast 7 times from certain death. would love to use it without a case but not everyone can afford to break their devices.
It doesn't make much sense, to purchase the latest and greatest displays, only to immediately cover them with additional layers. If potential damage concerns you that much, you're purchasing phones that you can't afford, respectfully.
@@yeti_369 with your logic, people should also not get insurances for their car because if they are worried about losing their car in a crash or getting stolen then they can't afford it.? A phone case is an insurance for your phone. 🤦♂️
I completely disagree with Marques here. All of my phones have been saved from drops by having cases. The key is the case protects the glass from taking the direct shock from a fall. You want that extra protection in case the phone slips out of your pocket or hand.
Amen. I am a guy who sees my device as a TOOL. I'm not into fashion, AT ALL. The functionality of my device is crucial and so is protecting it. Marques does not have to use a case because he gets FREE phones. I have to pay money for my devices.
You dipshits know Marques and all the other content creators don't keep the phones they unbox. Some of them send it back, buy it there god damn selves, or give it away.
*****, You are giving bad advice. You don't use cases because you have the luxury of getting free phones all the time, man. The only time a rubber case doesn't work is on gravel. They work great on hard surfaces. side impact gets spread out to an exponentially large size relative to the material and thickness of the case.
I don't use any kind of cover, but only a some kind of pocket. I really wanna feel the beauty of a smartphone shape and the way you feel it when you touch it (expecially because I have a Moto). But I'm really really carefull about every device I have, I'm sorta maniacal.
He does have a point there about the design, but... why don't we have more bumpers and protective surfaces integrated in the original design of the phones and not only? That's something that's been bugging me for a while...
A pocket height drop will crack any screen if it lands face down. Most drops happen at pocket height I would assume, or off of a counter or table. Any cheap case at that height will have enough of a lip above the screen to protect it from that drop. Of course if you hit a rock or something your still fucked, but don't say cases are useless, that's just not true.
FrostyFooy I can attest to this. Smashed my Nexus 5 screen on a tile floor before getting around to buying a case. So grateful that insurance paid for repair--bought a case immediately afterwards and then it survived all subsequent drops until Android 6.0 update caused a permanent bootloop.
"Drop tests prove that cases don't protect your phone when you drop it." So that's why I've NEVER ONCE broken a phone despite countless drops onto concrete and asphalt when my phone was in a case and I see thousands of people out in public with shattered phone screens or see friends posting about how they dropped and broke their phone? I'd rather have a non-broken phone that I'm not concerned with on the rare occasion that I drop it (even screen down) than to have to buy a new one every 8 months when pieces of the glass start falling off like most other people. I can't even tell you how many friends I have that have broken their phones within a month of getting them.
David Linehan Shit just happens, bruh. Sometimes people do things by accident. But I would prefer to not feel like I have to guard my phone with my life just for the sake of it being a little slimmer.
iEmbraceU Custom Inkfusion Pro case from Skinit. I always use a dual-layer case and I've never had any problems, meanwhile countless friends and coworkers walk around with shattered phones.
+TheRealConcertKing I totally agree with you! Most people I know have shattered screens within the first 2 months of purchase, while my phone is scratch free & screen intact for over 2 1/2 yrs. I use the Otter box defender & current phone HTC1 M8. I'm a mechanic by trade and can't tell you how many times my phone has been dropped. Accidents happen at any given moment. Even getting out of a vehicle. Being a girl, my pockets aren't as big as men's, so protecting the phone that way is out. Purses aren't my thing either. lol
I don't think you guys understand what I'm trying to say. People with shattered phones are careless (for the most part; I understand accidents do happen). But like MKBHD said, cases cover up everything nice about the phone. So, I've had my iPhone 5 (the original throwback one) for 3 years with no case and haven't cracked the screen. I'm using myself as an example, but I know there are many people who feel confident enough to not have a case and are able to enjoy the fine edges/design. Also, you can get a skin to give yourself a better grip on the phone. This is my opinion but I respect yours have a good one
I don't like naked phones. A case is a cheap way to customize and protect your phone. Every single person I know that has a naked phone also has a cracked screen.
I used cases on my phones for years. Finally saw the light and started using my phone without a case. It makes using my phone a thousand times more enjoyable (and I say this as someone who was using a relatively thin case). My phone doesn't have a visible scratch on it despite the fact that I have dropped it a few times. Phones are pretty damn sturdy these days. You don't even realize how much you're compromising your user experience with a case until you try using your phone without one.
i know a guy who managed to break his screen in just a week while waiting for the protector to arrive. What a fucking idiot, if people have such lettuce hands having a thousand layers over your phone will not save your sorry ass.
Ryan Mcnelis He mentions that he buys his devices outright, though I don't remember when or where he said that. I assume he makes over $100k a year so it's not too farfetched.
ShadowMassacr13 You'd be surprised at how much people could make from TH-cam. Besides, even if he didn't earn $100k from TH-cam I'm sure he's got other sources of income.
Marques, it’s insane how consistent your videos have been over the years. I’m glad I discovered this channel last year. Got an iPhone 13 Pro Max then I started watching tech videos, leading me to this amazing channel.
Actually a lot of phone cases absorb shock to protect the internals of the phone from taking the shock and rattling something loose, not just the Otterbox Defender. To only consider the aesthetics of your phone is ridiculous. Even smaller cases whether they be plastic or rubber stop the shock from travelling as far into the phone therefore potentially protecting your phone from internal damage that could be caused if no case is present.
A well built phone (specifically HTC and Apple) won't ever take internal damage from a normal drop. A cracked screen still works, so personally I think it's odd to ruin the aesthetics of a phone with a case, only in hopes of preventing aesthetic damage to the screen. However, i do like to put a case on if I am going in be in a particularly damage-prone situation. My point is also invalid for a waterproof case.
Thats why I use a spigen case for my 5s... I want it to not get scratched/get its insides moved around if i do drop it. Well I haven't ever dropped it in the 2.5 years I had it but I think it makes my phone look dope
i actually used a dbrand on my last phone i kind of like them, most of the textures make it easier to hole and prevents scratches and scuffs and shit like that. obviously not huge drops, but it does prevent a lot of normal things.
Nothing, DBrand is just good. Their "Most precise fit on earth" is no joke. I've had various skins and cases and the DBrand ones are always my favorite.
Aditya Krishnan actually its because all those companies sent him the phones for him to review. and companies usually let those who do reviews keep the phones.
Christopher Vance That's what that person meant. They send him the phones because he does something that was born of his natural interests in the small details of his electronics. Therefore, his appreciation for the design of things is what probably led him to this point in his career.
@@ilovetech your the type of dumbass who believes rich people work hard and poor people are just lazy, no it’s called capitalism and it’s a shitty system
MKBHD, we dont have the luxury to have 6 smartphones in our drawer. If by mistake i drop one i cant just take or buy another one. In my country a Lg G3 costs the average salary.... Im using a Obliq xtreme pro for my Galaxy S4. I dont love it but it saved my phone a couple of times already. I prefer to have a natural phone, slim and light but i cant.
Phones are made to be quite resistant, what with all the gorilla glass etc. Even if you didn't have the case it probably would not have broken. I remember my old iPhone 4 was dropped down a flight of ~50 concrete stairs at a train station. As it tumbled down i didn't even run after it cause i knew it was a goner; no way could it survive. The only damage it had was a chip on the corner, the power button was stiffer, and it had turned off. If you do need to protect it, get a case that will do exactly that. Like the one he mentioned in the video. The standard cheap plastic cases do nothing.
@@kingtutt880 My mom dropped her phone atleast 50 times. She falls asleep when she holds her phone and it falls down. But not even a single crack on it till now. She doesn't get enough time to sleep at night so she falls asleep whenever she's a bit relaxed without knowing.
If I've got a $600-$700 smart phone and I'm not a rich bastard that can afford every new phone that comes out and can't afford repair bills I'm going to want the assurance of have having that case even if it doesn't protect the phone all that well
My best advice is to put a case. The phone with time will get damage just by being in your pocket or by placing it on rough surfaces. A skin just protects it from light scratches not dents. The side of the phone will not be protected at all. Just as long as you buy a good case it will be in perfect condition and keep its value.
You should invest for the Moto G, I got that smart phone for $60 it runs with Boost Mobile, the plan I picked was $50 depends what plan you pick, in total for me was $110, the good thing I don't have a contract with any company I pay monthly $50 with a card, if you are a smart consumer like me you will go to a retail store pick a phone with a big enough saving from your wallet to $500 to $600 which is substantial for the consumer, Boost Mobile runs like that expensive AT&T company but free with contracts.
***** a 16 year old kid like me who has been saving up for a new phone for the last couple of months is going to want to spend it on groceries and bills and is upgrading from a pre owned iphone4. thats what i ment by my comment. if i was someone who brought a new phone every year i would understand where you are coming from.
Then don't buy such an expensive phone. That's ridiculous, no matter why you want it. That's flaunting money you don't have. If I can't afford something, I don't buy it.
You know what I have, a clear case. It’s perfect for everything and I can still appreciate the design, even thought with a case I’d love it anyway. Guys don’t listen to him- buy a case.
@@drasticgamerstv1025 So you piss on your phones? Good to know. I have a protective, yet still clear poetic case on my phone, yet it barely gets dirty.
@@alexisaguirrevazquez7900 The poetic cases don't get yellow, but the regular clear gel cases get yellow in less than a month. I have had one of those and in a year it looked like it was meant to be a yellowish brown case instead of a clear one. I've had poetic cases on all my phone since about 6 months and none of them show even a slight bit of yellowing.
I WISH I could go case-less. I mean, I'm an artist and I'd love to appreciate the design and texture... But I'm also going to drop it, multiple times, guaranteed. So the "just don't drop it" solution that some people suggest doesn't really work for me... And it's not like I'm a klutz or careless with my phone -- I'm the type of person who never creases the covers or pages of my books, always organizes the bills in my wallet and the folders in my bag, has never broken any carton of eggs, etc. But somehow, and some point, I know my phone will slip out of my hand, off my bed, or be knocked off a table... And I don't have the cash for a new phone every few months. And that beautiful design doesn't really count for much when the screen is cracked or the phone doesn't work.
Perfect response to this non-sense video. To say cases don't protect your phone at all is incredibly stupid, they simply do protect phones, there's no argument to be had.
I keep my phones for at least 2 years or more, too. I need them to last -- if I break the screen in the first 6 months I have it, I'm probably going to be using a phone with a broken screen for the next 18 months. Maybe a case won't stop my phone from breaking if I get it run over by a car or drop it from more that 5 feet up, but I've never done that -- it's the everyday small drops over 2 years that I need protection from.
okashi10 Agreed. A good example of how useful cases are - I had the Note 2 for 1 year. A pretty durable phone, being mostly plastic. I had to wait 1 week to get my case, and in that time I dropped it twice. The drops literally dented in a corner, removed paint, and another corner/edge was deeply scratched. After I got my case, I dropped the phone about 6-7 more times over a year... It had absolutely no damage from those drops, and most of them were from higher than pre owning a case.
tcw Same. The only time I've ever scratched a screen or damaged a phone was in the time before my screen protector/case was delivered. Being extra careful not to drop my phone is a nice thought, but if I'm gonna fork over a few hundred dollars for a phone I'm going to use for a few years, I need something on it to protect my investment.
So basically people risk cracking their screen, scratching their phone, etc. because they appreciate the design of the phone....?! The fuck?!?! You can appreciate it while it's in a case too.
No you can't, dude. There is no possibly way that you can appreciate the phone's aesthetic qualities while it is in a case. The case covers all of it up. It might as well not exist. That being said, I appreciate the quality fo durability that my phone acquires while in a case that other people who use their phones naked cannot appreciate. All of my friends have phones with cracked screens. My phone, which has remained in an otterbox for 2 years, is just as beautiful as the day I bought it. I appreciate the time otterbox put into making the most durable case on the market, which is something that Marques cannot comment on. That being said, the guy making this video has been gifted all of the phones on the market for review, so if one phone goes down, he can just swap it out for another great phone. He doesn't know the struggle.
ThoseWhoStayUofM I do think that phones look a lot better without a case. I mean when they release a new phone, most people will be impressed by the looks of it, and then later on just cover it with a cheap rubber/plastic case. That just makes no sense. These cheap cases will mostly only help against scratches, but at the cost of the looks, it seems like too much of a price. Then again I do use a case on my phone, even though I think it looks better without it, but at least it's a clear plastic case. I think skins are the way to go, they don't really ruin the aesthetics and you can also make it look your own, and still preserve the general factory looks of the phone.
MrPiikkipallo I've already addressed the idea that the peace of mind a good protective case provides is prioritized in most consumer's minds over something as shallow as aesthetic appeal. Visual stimulation is fleeting. A sunset eventually stops being so beautiful once you've been staring at it for 18 hours... ya know? (in a photograph or something)
ThoseWhoStayUofM I wouldn't be so sure about that, the only way something beautiful would stop being beautiful ( provided that it doesn't get worn or ruined ) by it being commonplace. Also, why would anyone stare at their phone for 18 hours? It's the same as buying an aesthetically pleasing car, it won't stop being pleasing to you, unless something better comes along. It just seems quite dumb to me, that people buy these nice looking phones and then cover them up with cases. The only reason I'm using a case on my phone is to try and avoid getting the back and the lense of the camera scratched. The design of the product goes to waste if just covered with a case ( depending on the case and the user ofc. ) This just how I feel about it. Anyhow, I do understand that people would like to increase the durability of their fancy phone even at the cost of its aesthetics, although I've seen some leather cases that seem quite classy. What I do not understand, are the people who buy the newest iPhone and cover it up with a cheap 5 dollar awful rubber case. I guess cases are good, as long as they look good and are of quality material, otherwise it's just off the experience of an luxurious product.
MrPiikkipallo When you first buy a new piece of expensive tech, you take ultra good care of it. You keep it shiny. You handle it gently. You're overly precautious. After a month, you're putting it in a backpack, sliding it across a table, throwing it on the couch or the bed, etc. Why? In this exact same way, you stop seeing it as beautiful. You just see it as a piece of plastic/metal that has a great deal of utility. If you don't, then you're the exception. However, if you're willing to be honest about it and stop bullshitting yourself, then you'll see that there is absolutely nothing wrong with putting your phone in a protective case, and that you're just being a pretentious, hipster, asshole.
Skins don't do shit. This video wasn't very good, sorry Marques. There are a lot of good ways out there to protect your phone without adding bulk to it, or making it appear ugly. You've managed to make the HTC M8 even uglier by putting that skin on the back, which just looks out of place and awkward, and won't do anything to protect your phone. I have a Spigen glass screen protector on my Nexus 5, along with an aluminum bumper, so it's still pretty well protected and thin. Chances are if you drop it, it will land on one of the sides, and the bumper will do the job just fine for that. Drop it on it's face, and any phone will just shatter. But most drops are on the corners.
***** Very good. I have the Neo Hybrid as well. I use that when I am out "in the wild" because it offers great protection. You will like the Slim Armor.
didn't he say that the skins weren't to protect against drops and only to protect against scratching in the case of sliding it across and abrasive surface? He made the point about skins being better than cases because both don't typically protect the screen but skins have a better aesthetic about them while protecting from some cosmetic damage. Sheesh listening skills
Conner Neal Phone cases aren't a multi million dollar industry for nothing. To say that a case doesn't protect a phone is fucking absurd, and you're delusional if you believe that shit. My Spigen has saved my phone more times than I can care to remember, as well as my Otterbox. Phones usually fall on the corners, and any bumper will suffice to protect it. Decals look good to some and not to others. So they provide grip. So what? So do cases, and they actually help protect the phone, too. This is just an ad for the skins he uses, who are pushing them to market it more so they can get more sales. It's not difficult to understand if your IQ surpasses the number of fingers on your left hand.
DaemoniumCC look man I don't really care about your success with your preferred phone case. If it's protecting your phone that is awesome. I was pointing out that the video wasn't saying that skins protect your phone other than for minor abrasions. I have known many people who have had cases on their phones only to drop them and have the screen shatter. Many cases are made for looks more than function. It is clear that you buy your cases in order to seriously protect your phone but many people buy them because they think they look good but they don't actually do much as far as protecting the phone. Many people also are pressured in to buying a case that they don't necessarily need from the retailer at which they bought their phone. You failed to see the point of the video- it was that cases mess with the aesthetic of beautifully designed phones. Which is true.
That's like telling a fish to walk. It just ain't gonna happen. People don't drop their phones on purpose in the real world. Now, I think what you are trying to say is, "TRY not to drop the phone."
Tássio Moreira By "Try not to drop the phone" I mean "Maintain a firm grip on the phone when using it. When not using the phone, keep track of where it is. If it is hanging out of your pocket or somebody else had possession of it, it can and most likely will fall." That better?
That doesn’t cover a lot of his points tho? He didn’t necessarily say that he doesn’t use a case ’cause of the way the phone looks but the way it feels.
No joke; that Defender doesn’t mess around. I was in the film industry with my shiny new iPhone 4, and … holy God. The phone failed before the case did.
Watching this 7 years later things have truly changed a lot phones have gotten really tough to the point where u can easily drop it be sure it didn’t break also case manufacturers like Rhinoshield and Mous are making Really strong and sleek cases, people keep their phones a lot longer now aswell so the durability is a lot more important I am not trusting my phone with just a skin on the back anymore
@@knwrThe only good looking cases I've seen recently honestly are from Casetify and Spigen cause so many others look so cheap and cheesy. Otterbox is more utility. Most others, meh.
imo some of the ugliest cases: those huge bear ones that got super popular from ariana grande - just bulky cases in generally. it pains me. its like people covering their absolutely gorgeous works of art with a hideous piece of tarp
I agree with you. I like feeling my phone without the case. But then usually without the case,I will feel a little anxious and just imagine my iPhone slipping out of my hand because of that smooth matt skin that's on the back of it. It just feels a little safer to have a case on.
These manufacturers have spent hundreds hundreds of hours researching and developing slick phones that easily fall out of your hand, crack and break if you drop them. Marques gets hundreds of phones sent to him free so he doesn’t need a case. The rest of us who pay hard earned money for our expensive phones have to protect our investments. I use a glass screen protector, a DBrand skin and a clear case. After 3 iPhones and many drops and cracked screen protectors none of my iPhone have a scratch. Using a phone “naked” is madness unless you get $600-1,400 phones for free!
I love the look and feel of my phone without a case, but considering it's made almost entirely of glass (and not the newer flexible strong glass stuff), and that I'm rather clumsy, I'll stick with a case. Go with Incipio cases though if you want something that protects and still looks good
Absolute bull crap, this. When a phone with a rubber/silicon case falls TWO crucial things happen: First that case bump (or lip as they call it) ensures that the phone's body doesn't come in direct contact with the surface. That reduces the impact SIGNIFICANTLY! Secondly, the rubber material absorbs the blow to ensure the phone doesn't bounce around like a maniac before coming to rest. If there's no case, or a hard case, the phone is likely to bounce a lot more, leaving more room for damage. Marques living in a bubble of phone privilege here.
I personally dislike that phones are getting thinner and wider. Give me a 5inch screen anyday with a semi-bulky phone and I'll be on my way. What's the point of making these fragile sleek phones anyways? First drop and there goes your 700 dollar phone. I'll slap a Spigen or Otterbox on my phone ALL the time.
Those people are also protecting a $700 investment, so when they spend literally 1 second to remove the case, their phone is in perfect condition. It takes 1 second to remove it, and you can use it in pristine condition whenever you feel like it. You are not forced to keep the case on for 2 straight years, you know? I hate people who cannot comprehend why cases exist.
Over these past years, i've come to realize, i almost NEVER drop my phone... hence i have a case on a phone immediately after i get it with screen protectors... (yes, i'm over protective over my gears). However,, I came to realize that these cases do me not much good because I don't drop them and 2nd, no one will really want to buy my galaxy s3 now.... so all in all, cases are just for battery packs or other essential use.
I'd rather protect my £500 phone with a £5 case. At least if the £5 case is damaged it's cheaper to replace than a £500 phone. Yes I understand insurance, but that's just effort.
+Marques Brownlee I'm still hesitant to leave cases behind, specifically raised edge cases, like Speck. I have dropped my phone on its face multiple times without damage, and I do believe it is due to the raised edges. Along with that, the topic of dropping it on the corner with a rubber padding seems to save it more than bare impact. I believe your video should really just be about the plain rubber cases without raised edges or corner protection, and not cases like Speck that I have in personal experience seen save my phone. If there was a mix of somehow having a thin skin along with a raised edge and corner protected case, I would take that over anything.
I feel like people who don't use cases are generally tech enthusiasts. I've never kept a case on my phone. To me it's just not worth it. I love how my nexus 5 looks naked, and I hate how a thick phone case feels in my pocket. Many people who love tech want to enjoy the phone as it was designed. It's more about the aesthetic feeling of the phone, not the utility. I can see why people want cases. They care about the utility and convenience, and don't want to deal with the hassle of getting it fixed if they break it. Of course, I'm just generalizing here. If I broke the screen I would just fix it myself, which would be a bit cheaper than buying a new one. Plus I enjoy opening phones up and working on them. So win/win, right?
Yeah I can agree with all your points here, I appreciate the look and feel of a phone naked, but I've always been much more focused on utility. I'd rather have something working well and not look quite as pretty than have it look pretty for a while until I inevitably drop it. I do enjoy the look and feel of the phone; though, until I stick it in a Defender before my butterfingers lose their grip. Sadly I can't afford to replace the screen every other week. I also don't actually mind the look of cases, especially Otterboxes. Maybe I just find beauty in the utility? I dunno, but I use the Defender a lot. :P
I agree that cases take away from the aesthetics, but sometimes, cases are necessary. Working in the construction industry, its important for me to protect my phone from impacts that occur outside of just dropping the phone. Most cases offer minimal protection and are useless, but otterboxes and lifeproof cases are unfortunately a necessity for me.
I love your videos Marq, and I understand why you want the design of the phone to be visible, I also really admire the beauty of a phone's body, but you can't say that cases don't protect phones because, they do, ALOT, lol.
su gub sure the screen still breaks if I drop the phone with the screen downwards on a non total flat surface . But most of the time I drop it on the edges, and the screen is likely to break then. So a case that do not cover the screen still protects the screen, most of the time (but not always).
He says company puts 100s of hours in designs, but case manufacturers put about a week only to come up with a case. But, 1 week = 7 days = 7 × 24 hours = 168 hours Conclusion: case manufacturers also put 100s of hours on case design. Warning: Do not belittle case manufacturers.
Case user here. With all the manufacturers aiming to make phones thinner (how much thinner does a phone need to be right?), ironically most phones seem too thin to me now. For me this makes them harder to hold and handle. The case I use now honestly doesn't offer much protection if it were dropped (none really), but the extra grip keeps me from dropping it in the first place. Had this phone for 1.5 years and never been dropped. I can't tell you how many people I've seen with a nice 'naked' phone that is sporting a huge spider web crack on the screen from been dropped. They seem to just 'deal with it.' Couldn't do that. Manufacturers aim to make a phone look sleek and expensive but don't seem to do much to make it easy to hold on to. +1 for a case.
if you take an iphone for example, they didn't change the design at all in all this years, so if there was a problem about holding the phone, they would've already changed.
How many design changes has the Iphone had during the past 6 generations (regarding form factor)? One? Lol, all I'm saying is that once a phone becomes so thin, it becomes harder to hold IMO. This is the main reason I use a case.
I keep my phone naked as well. People always annoy me saying "you don't have a case? You're gonna drop your phone" I haven't dropped my phone ever. Also cases make phones too big in the pocket and I hate things in my pockets as it is
I also run all of my phones naked. I dropped my galaxy S2 when I had it ages ago, and it didn't break. Now I run my note 3 naked and have yet to drop it, or get it scratched... So, the case manufacturers isn't fooling me.
I have always used a case -- and screen protector -- on my phones. Sometimes my new phone arrived before my case did. Those were scary days of paranoia! Cases have saved me a few times, such as when standing up while forgetting that my phone was in my lap. I have a tip to share regarding case installation. Use that little lens cloth or microfiber cloth that came with the screen protector and lay that inside the back half of your case before putting it on your phone. It'll act as a gasket to snug up the fit a little bit, and prevent some scratches from slowly happening to the back of the phone touching the case or whatever contaminants find their way into your pocket and behind your phone.✅
I personally like using OtterBox Defenders on my phones. Problem is I essentially have a pocket tank. And sticking my phone in my pockets is about like sticking a car tire in there. A lot of the outer rubber gets rubbed off. So I only use my case when I go out. If I'm at home, my phone is naked. Like me. Because pants are overrated. :D Cased when I go out because I'm not dropping my phone on the sidewalk without my defender. Naked when I'm home because carpet makes for a soft landing. And I'm too poor for tile floors lol
I'm sure I'm not the only one who prefers the actual practical functionality of the device and really doesn't care about the look... First thing I did when I got my S4 was put it in an OtterBox defender case, and I've never used it outside of that. I would also much rather have a slightly thicker phone with much better battery life...
Even double the thickness of the S4, to put a battery twice as large, in addition to the extra thickness of the OtterBox wouldn't bother me in the slightest. Yes, as you can probably tell, I use my phone a whole hell of a lot.
"slightly thicker" and Ottorbox defender case should never be in the same sentence. I have used most iphones and a fair few androids, I dropped a lot of them without cases and with cases, with the exception of the 50$+ heavy duty cases that make the phone feel like a brick they all took about the same amount of damage.
cases arent just for protection anymore. the other reason is personalization. all iphone 5s for example look the same. but not all cases are. i can pick out all my friends iphones because of there cases, and its also easier to change a case, then a phone to have a different look
Nah dude. In my experience the glass is really hard to break. My iPhone X got dropped on concrete a good few times and it never cracked or scratched. I rock my iPhone 11 naked but I’m pretty careful with my phones. I’m getting a skin for it but i have a tendency to take skins off pretty quickly
Its from his little review of the Dotcase for the HTC One. He goes on about how it actually adds to the phone as a first party case as opposed to many other first party cases, like the 5c's
Maybe if phone makers didn't make phones that only look good but in practice are slippery as fuck and fragile as fuck then we would not need to cover them up with a £5 case.
You raise some interesting points Marques, but cases & screen protectors do protect your phone. You may can easily replace your devices, but alot of people cant. It just pains me when i see people with cracked or damaged phones because they feel like they don't need cases. if you're paying that much money for a device it is just sensible to protect it .
If you are paying that much for a device, it is *not* sensible to cover up all that meticulously designed hardware with a cheapy plastic case. I carry my phone, a Note 3, completely naked without a screen protector, case, skin, or any other form of protection. I like the way it feels in the hand, not to mention it's size is already ungodly enough without the addition of a bulky case. In my 7 months of ownership, I am proud to say there is not a single scratch on the phone, and that is coming from a heavy user. As long as users are careful enough with their devices, not dropping them every 3 seconds with greasy fingers like I see some people on the street do, their phones will be fine. Anyway, what point is there in preserving the phone and its resale value if it's never going to get used the way it's meant to? You may as well be renting the phone.
Michael why does it have to be a cheap plastic case? You can be as careful as you want, all it takes is one drop & that could be it... you should atleast have some type of screen protection
AAron Phones today are designed to absorb shock in specific areas. Phones in some cases are better off caseless than with the case, since the extra rigidity causes impact shock to be distributed through the entire body (especially the glass) instead of absorbed in a specific area. If my phone is damaged in an area that is not my screen, I can buy a new frame and back panel for $10 off eBay.
I have used plenty of phones and not once I have dealt serious damage to them. I am currently with my M7, naked since launch day, and the only things it has is a chipped corner that is not really noticeable and a couple of scratches in the back. There are many different types of people and luckily for me I am the type that takes good care of their stuff.
I respect MKBHD's opinion on cell phones. I think he provides intelligent and normally unbiased information. That being said, this is a load of crap. Cases save. You protect your investment, you don't show it off for it's "beauty". This is the dumbest shit, this whole trend online where these youtubers are saying yeah skins woo and are anti case seems like a paid thing to me.
@A ChocoRoll I definitely stand by the case part. I haven't been watching his recent phone videos much but I do remember seeing him be critical of phones with "chins" or bezels if any kind. Lots of the TH-cam reviewers just hate on any phone that isn't all screen. Def don't agree with that, but that's just my opinion. I'm probably in the minority. Any how yes I think cases are important generally speaking on any phone especially one made entirely of glass.
I can't start using a phone until it has a case. I'm just way to prone to dropping it on the concrete to think of having it naked. Though I would love to do it.
For the past few years, every time I watch this videos after buying a mew phone, then regret the decision after a few weeks when my phone falls and gets some scratches and scuffs, luckily it hasn’t yet broken
I use cases but hardly use screen protectors. Most of my devices I have owned without using screen protectors mostly and they lasted a long time. I’m currently using an iPhone 12 Pro Max I’ve had for over a year and haven’t used a screen protector on it and it looks fine
My S3 fall from the roof of my car to 50kmp and not broke because I had a good case. Your idea is good but not entirely true. A good case, will protect your smartphone much better than if you did not have. I love the beauty of a naked smartphone, but the truth is that not everyone can buy a smartphone every 3 months, so it is better to protect. But this is my opinion.
Melvin DLaCruz exactly.. if you are able to buy multiple devices per year, then you must be OK with naked, but when you upgrade every two years....then you need all the protection to last that long.....
*Laughs in Wallet Phone Case* I had my S7 Edge with a wallet case and I swear it saved its life so many times because it had a “book like” appearance, so the front of the wallet leaves your phone in extra screen protection when you’re not using it.
I love the feel of a naked phone, but my G2 is too slippery and the rear button sticks out, so I like the spigen slim armor case on it. It still looks nice, is easy to grip and looks flawless after numerous drops. I always get screen protectors immediately when i get a phone, and in the future that might be all i use
This video is 100 percent accurate! A skin will offer the same protection of a case, for the normal drops but you idiots are complaining it won't protect it from a 10ft drop? How TF are you dropping it from 10ft accidentally? Makes me wonder. Manufactures make there phones strong enough to absorb the shock of a normal height drop all you need to do is protect from scratches. Geez poor MKBHD u guys r hating on him
Long story short :
MKB doesn't use phone cases because if he breaks one phone, he's got like 200 others to choose from.
LOL EXACTLY! If I break my Note 4 my broke ass is SOL.

I always rock it naked.
I also use my phone without a case.
lol
Me too Austin.
My phone is censored so no need for a case.
Same!
Naked is best XD
I used my nexus 4 without a case for more than 6 months but a few weeks ago I shattered the back of it so now I'm a bit more careful XD (at least the front screen didn't crack)
I agree with everything you said except the part about dropping your phone. A case can definitely prevent knicks and scratches.
jason wong a screen protector does that too, Especially glass ones.
Lol screen protectors do shit with drops. They are only good as scratch resistors thats it
+TheMysteriousKnight Wrong. A guy I know had a tempered glass screen protector and it saved his Galaxy phone. The protector got smashed but my actual screen is fine.
That doesn't prove that the protector actually helped with that, It probably would have been just as fine without it
TheBannana Dude I dropped a phone with a glass screen protector and the screen protector and actual phone shattered
Then another day I dropped my iPhone from a similar height
Screen first by accident and the screen didn’t break
Can someone please explain this
Its weird watching these vids in 2017 when the tech is all old. "These new phones" *Shows iPhone 5s
Even weirder in 2018
Especially now that near every flagship has a glass back panel, which is significantly safer with a sturdy case. It also helps that there is a much greater selection of very well designed and aesthetically pleasing cases now than there was 4 years ago.
Still weird and its almost 2019
Even even weirder in 2019
Imagine it in 2019. Oof those bessels
Without cases, you can now enjoy the sharp and attractive features of your now cracked phone
MadCat 741 Not true. I dropped my phone with a case on from pocket height and the screen cracked, and I'm around 5'4", so I'm pretty short
LimeSmash That's because you're a manlet
I put a Speck Candyshell on my phone then when I dropped it on the road, the screen shattered. Obviously most cases don't protect your phone from shattering.
+CommentMasterBoom running, exercising and monitoring with the phone. Armbands get sweaty and hold the sweat against the phone. Metal and salt... I use an otterbox defender now for my phone.
+Daniel McNeary My s5 has fallen many times with a speck candyshell and it has yet to take any damage
i disagree bud, may be you don't care about breaking your device cuz u have tons of them, but people who buy a device on 2 year contracts, kinda wanna keep em for atleast 2 years before they can get a new device. i use a generic flip case on my note 4 edge and it has saved my phone atleast 7 times from certain death. would love to use it without a case but not everyone can afford to break their devices.
100% agree

Sudheendra G Um, what?
Vault Guy And? That doesn't change the fact that for those of us who need our phones to last, get cases.
i’m an advocate of putting a skin to personalize you phone and THEN put on a transparent case for protection
Those don't protect anything 😂
@@AD-cy4vj depends on the material lmao

*****, You are giving bad advice. You don't use cases because you have the luxury of getting free phones all the time, man.
The only time a rubber case doesn't work is on gravel. They work great on hard surfaces. side impact gets spread out to an exponentially large size relative to the material and thickness of the case.
***** try not having a case on nexus 4, the phone will fly all over the table
I don't use any kind of cover, but only a some kind of pocket. I really wanna feel the beauty of a smartphone shape and the way you feel it when you touch it (expecially because I have a Moto). But I'm really really carefull about every device I have, I'm sorta maniacal.
Adam Outler I agree with you 100%
He does have a point there about the design, but... why don't we have more bumpers and protective surfaces integrated in the original design of the phones and not only? That's something that's been bugging me for a while...
Got a naked M7 for 8 months straight, never had any incident. Guess everybody have different levels of "care" given to their devices.
Easy for this guy to say...he gets new phones sent to him all the time. for free.
trippplefive Exactly.
trippplefive yeah
trippplefive but he sends them back right?
trippplefive you know !!!
trippplefive Are you gonna do something about it? or are you just gonna bitch?
Anyone else noticed the millisecond iPhone 5c screen flash?
Yea he was making fun of apples cases

+TheRealConcertKing Aaaaaand what kind of case do you have?
iEmbraceU Custom Inkfusion Pro case from Skinit.
This is my opinion but I respect yours
have a good one
I don't like naked phones. A case is a cheap way to customize and protect your phone. Every single person I know that has a naked phone also has a cracked screen.
Yewon2001 I have a naked phone, and I don't have a cracked display
Kevin Anand same here
I used cases on my phones for years.
Yewon2001 i hate cases, they get in the way between my phone and my hands, also add to the size.
just an external glass skin is fine.
i know a guy who managed to break his screen in just a week while waiting for the protector to arrive.
What a fucking idiot, if people have such lettuce hands having a thousand layers over your phone will not save your sorry ass.
I had a note 2 with an otterbox defender lol. Phone had its own zip code
Hahahahahahahahahah.. that comment actually made me laugh out loud.. like seriously hahaha
I know almost how you feel, my old s3 had an otter box on it, I took it off after a year.

+Eron Constante....He makes TH-cam videos, he makes no where near 100k a year.
Even smaller cases whether they be plastic or rubber stop the shock from travelling as far into the phone therefore potentially protecting your phone from internal damage that could be caused if no case is present.
agreed

How much is Dbrand paying this guy?
i actually used a dbrand on my last phone i kind of like them, most of the textures make it easier to hole and prevents scratches and scuffs and shit like that. obviously not huge drops, but it does prevent a lot of normal things.
Nothing, DBrand is just good. Their "Most precise fit on earth" is no joke. I've had various skins and cases and the DBrand ones are always my favorite.
+Joseph Halden he is being paid by them.
Why would Dbrand pay him to advertise other skin manufacturers?
Vishal Shah he literally advertises dbrand in his videos.
This is why I buy clear cases. I can still see all of the beauty of the phone, but I can still have it (somewhat) protected.
I would appreciate the design too if I had 25 grand worth of electronics in my room...
Work harder dawg
Its his job to have all that it pays for itself.

You get that brand new phone with the amazing corners and edges, and it looks flawless.
Then you accidentally drop the fucker.

***** well i wouldnt be looking towards a new phone if my current iphone 4 would actually work properly

But they turn to piss color in a week
To say cases don't protect your phone at all is incredibly stupid, they simply do protect phones, there's no argument to be had.
tcw Yeah.. an otterbox defender. That rubber shit? No chance in hell.
Being extra careful not to drop my phone is a nice thought, but if I'm gonna fork over a few hundred dollars for a phone I'm going to use for a few years, I need something on it to protect my investment.
great video man. 100% info 0% bs.
I'm a naked phone user and I'm so proud of it. :))
a case would easily prevent dents and scratches
***** Most cases have a pretty sufficient lip for that exact reason.
Just don't drop the phone, simple as that.
No. When you drop it, you don't do it on purpose, do you? Its like saying don't mess up, makes no sense
Dude, how did u come up with that?! Genius!
That's like telling a fish to walk. It just ain't gonna happen. People don't drop their phones on purpose in the real world. Now, I think what you are trying to say is, "TRY not to drop the phone."
Nibroc99
Well, there's not "trying not to drop the phone" either. It's called accident. You won't be always be prepared to try not to drop your phone.
Tássio Moreira By "Try not to drop the phone" I mean "Maintain a firm grip on the phone when using it. When not using the phone, keep track of where it is. If it is hanging out of your pocket or somebody else had possession of it, it can and most likely will fall."
That better?
And now... We present!!!
THE CLEAR PHONE CASE
That doesn’t cover a lot of his points tho? He didn’t necessarily say that he doesn’t use a case ’cause of the way the phone looks but the way it feels.

guys i commented that two years ago
Julio C.D. yeah its damn weird ive pretty much stopped watching technology related videos lol
dude, it is a phone, not a car that you can get girls with. Design doesn't really matter on a phone, the specs and durability does.
Have you already forgotten the Galaxy Soap 6? ;)
wat?
+Tor Ivan Boine This was made before the galaxy s 6 and thats why you would put a skin on it
+Jordan Tavares ikr like a year ago. when s5 just announced. lmfao
Wow man. You opened my eyes. SKIN FTW!
Or naked, whatever

I'm disappointed he had to say this for you to realize.
I didn't know about skins. But I did know the dedication they put in. One of the things that made me like the phone the first time I got it.
No joke; that Defender doesn’t mess around. I was in the film industry with my shiny new iPhone 4, and … holy God. The phone failed before the case did.
Anyone pause at 1:52 to catch that little pop up... No ... Just me then
I thought that I was the only one that saw that iPhone 5c with a case XD
+minidashman i was about to comment that but sounds like i´m not the only one lol
+minidashman WTF IS THAT?!
Yeah ..Still Watchin MKBHD in 2016 :D
It looked like a iphone

yeah it is an yellow iPhone with a red case (case has holes) on it

Yes. Pun not intended.
HA!
Thin rubber cover/case to keep the phone from sliding on slippery surfaces
+1
Watching this 7 years later things have truly changed a lot phones have gotten really tough to the point where u can easily drop it be sure it didn’t break also case manufacturers like Rhinoshield and Mous are making Really strong and sleek cases, people keep their phones a lot longer now aswell so the durability is a lot more important I am not trusting my phone with just a skin on the back anymore
eh those look just as crappy as ever. After leaving the case behind there's no way I'll go back
@@knwrThe only good looking cases I've seen recently honestly are from Casetify and Spigen cause so many others look so cheap and cheesy.

Hahaha yea same with me
Same here
Same
Otterbox defender ftw!!
Go with Incipio cases though if you want something that protects and still looks good
Well... We don't want to loose that bucks we spend on phones by preserving the beauty....
dropped my phone while watching this video...
Absolute bull crap, this. When a phone with a rubber/silicon case falls TWO crucial things happen:
First that case bump (or lip as they call it) ensures that the phone's body doesn't come in direct contact with the surface.
I don't care much about the Slim ness either. Most of the time it's the software that matters.
We buy a 1000 dollar phone and one drop off it goes!
Just like human centipede!
Well spotted. Slow clap.
Beanjuice Umm.. I honestly feel like they are less fragile now.
Do what phone you got now then
I hate the people that ruin the looks of their $700 phone with a $7 case...
Was it just me or did I see an iphone 5c for an eighth of a second between 1:50 and1:55
Yup pause at 1:52
Stephon Bryant yeh me too it was a yellow 5c with the pink case XD
***** it was a joke about the 5c's thickness.
Oh yes it was
Probably, but yeah that 5c was there
A few years later... BOOM the channel is sponsored by DBRANDS!!!
But that drop test tho! Great video!
Haha
Fair point. I use a case for mine but can understand why someone would not want one.
Most of them simply protect the edges which is not so important as the screen which is much more fragile. Except screen protectors.
su gub sure the screen still breaks if I drop the phone with the screen downwards on a non total flat surface . But most of the time I drop it on the edges, and the screen is likely to break then. So a case that do not cover the screen still protects the screen, most of the time (but not always).
He says company puts 100s of hours in designs, but case manufacturers put about a week only to come up with a case.
But,
1 week = 7 days
= 7 × 24 hours
= 168 hours
Conclusion: case manufacturers also put 100s of hours on case design.
Warning: Do not belittle case manufacturers.
Case manufacturers actually save phones while TH-camrs like mkbhd like to use phones with broken screens.
I've had my phone since the day that the nexus 4 came out it doesn't have a case and its perfect no cracks no scratches
if you take an iphone for example, they didn't change the design at all in all this years, so if there was a problem about holding the phone, they would've already changed.
How many design changes has the Iphone had during the past 6 generations (regarding form factor)? One? Lol, all I'm saying is that once a phone becomes so thin, it becomes harder to hold IMO. This is the main reason I use a case.
Go away
I can't like this video enough.
And I just got a S2 lol
Cased when I go out because I'm not dropping my phone on the sidewalk without my defender. Naked when I'm home because carpet makes for a soft landing. And I'm too poor for tile floors lol
I feel like... SOMEONE IS TRYING TO SELL ME SOMETHING!!!
DisCHORDDubstep BUY SOME APPLES! :p
I CAN EAT ALL THESE DANG APPLES.
DisCHORDDubstep Wait so u guys have apples too? It's like wholefoods in this bitch.
Pants are over over rated lol 😂
I have the low profile rubber case with reinforced sides. And it has definitely saved my phone a few times
This video was sponsored by Apple's $500 screen repair policy
😆
cases arent just for protection anymore. the other reason is personalization. all iphone 5s for example look the same. but not all cases are. i can pick out all my friends iphones because of there cases, and its also easier to change a case, then a phone to have a different look
Cases are really useful... Might not protect the glass when you drop it but it protects your phone if it drop on its corner or back :P
OMG! Hi ImperfectLion! I watch your videos too!
in most cases it protects the glass too... LOL case has two meanings in the sentence
This video didn’t age well haha. with almost every phone having a glass back, cases are definitely mandatory.
Nah dude. In my experience the glass is really hard to break. My iPhone X got dropped on concrete a good few times and it never cracked or scratched. I rock my iPhone 11 naked but I’m pretty careful with my phones. I’m getting a skin for it but i have a tendency to take skins off pretty quickly
I just get a Dbrand skin to give me good grip and it makes it look better in my opinion.
"I get a new phone every week, so let me tell you why you guys (who would have to wait two years to get a new phone) don't need a case"
what was the one frame at 1:52 about?
iPhone5c :)
Nice Spy!!
Its from his little review of the Dotcase for the HTC One. He goes on about how it actually adds to the phone as a first party case as opposed to many other first party cases, like the 5c's
Just be like me and dont drop your phone!
if you drop your phone its gona be like:
"Drops phone" shit i broke the floor!
you're chuck norris if your phone drops it gets scared of you raging about that drop so much it suddenly obtains the durability of a nokia 3310
Chuck Norris when u drop the phone the ground scratches not your phone am i right?
Because when you do, the ground gets scratched by your phone!
Are you guys genuinely making Chuck Norris jokes in 2017/18?
Mkbhd: I don't use cases
Me: during watching the video removed my case ❗
Watching this in 2024. 10 years later. Imagine all that has changed now. Where is HTC?
This is why i don't use cases on my phone!
Summed up nicely by *****, great video as always!
I've been lurking around this channel for a while, I finally decided to make an account and subscribe!
Welcome to the party :D!
Congrats. It's the best tech channel on youtube. Marques is the frankieonpc of tech.
The the best tech channel on youtube! 😃 welocome
Gah. I need to get a skin. Thingie.
Bumper case. Its small enough to fit in my pocket. Still protects the phone enough from minor drops that happen.
Slickwraps, Inc. Lol
Lol slick wrap is for you
Maybe if phone makers didn't make phones that only look good but in practice are slippery as fuck and fragile as fuck then we would not need to cover them up with a £5 case.
If my phone is damaged in an area that is not my screen, I can buy a new frame and back panel for $10 off eBay.
if you didn't use a case your phone gonna smash and you gonna lose all that beauty as well...
And that's why is use Nokia 3310!
Best phone eva
Probably should get a case for the floor instead.
DaShinyful Yes.
Update from the future in 2021: Marques is still the man.
@@user-lrg3glm6rhdyv what a piece of crap. You prefer a cracked and broken phone instead? What a moron.
@@Drewtube64 smart people like you are in the majority, fortunately. Only dumb asses carry phones without cases.
Just buy a phone case and tempered glass.
@@kvin9210 I get those after I get scratches, actually I always have a tempered glass, even if I have no case

@@BradB-o3h that’s rough man, and I am currently using a rhinoshield mod nx on my iPhone 15 plus, some nasty falls, but no damage yet.
I use cases but hardly use screen protectors. Most of my devices I have owned without using screen protectors mostly and they lasted a long time. I’m currently using an iPhone 12 Pro Max I’ve had for over a year and haven’t used a screen protector on it and it looks fine
40% agree 60% disagree.
But very good review
My S3 fall from the roof of my car to 50kmp and not broke because I had a good case.
Your idea is good but not entirely true. A good case, will protect your smartphone much better than if you did not have. I love the beauty of a naked smartphone, but the truth is that not everyone can buy a smartphone every 3 months, so it is better to protect. But this is my opinion.
Melvin DLaCruz exactly.. if you are able to buy multiple devices per year, then you must be OK with naked, but when you upgrade every two years....then you need all the protection to last that long.....
I like when things are naked.
Not just phones right??? Just asking...
Bon Jorte Badiango duh
***** Obviously we are talking about the 80 year old grandmas and grandpas here.
Bon Jorte Badiango nope just phones girls are gross hours.
the raised lip on most cases can somewhat protect the screen
*Laughs in Wallet Phone Case*
I had my S7 Edge with a wallet case and I swear it saved its life so many times because it had a “book like” appearance, so the front of the wallet leaves your phone in extra screen protection when you’re not using it.
I love my Otterbox Defender so much, I think it actually makes my HTC One M9 more pleasurable to hold.
I only use my phone without a case when I'm laying on my bed with no danger of structural failure
