  • The clinical method of motivational interviewing grew directly from the work of Carl Rogers. It is a person-centred approach for evoking a client's own motivation for and commitment to change. It has a strong evidence base of over 200 randomized clinical trials and is currently being taught and practised in at least 50 languages. Dr. Miller is the original developer of this approach and co-author with Dr. Steve Rollnick of primary textbooks on its applications.
    1st Learning Objective:
I would like participants to come away with an understanding of how motivational interviewing applies and builds on the work of Carl Rogers.
    2nd Learning Objective:
Participants will be introduced to the underlying spirit and four component processes of motivational interviewing as presented in our third edition (2013).
    3rd Learning Objective:
Participants will also learn about specific aspects of client speech that are involved in motivational interviewing and that predict client outcomes.

Really enjoying learning more about MI and hearing Dr. Miller's thoughts on how to become more proficient in MI in practice. I would love to see MI taught in a way that parents could relate to their teen and adult children. This area of knowledge, along with Dr. Alfie Kohn's work in "unconditional parenting", which very much encourages understanding, acceptance, and autonomy, could provide a breakthrough way for parents and children to communicate.
