  • William R. Miller, PhD, the Emeritus Distinguished Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry at the University of New Mexico presented the 2014 Ruth Knee Lecture on Spirituality and Social Work at the University of Chicago School of Social Service Administration. Miller wove together two major themes from his research career that illuminate the human potential for personal transformation. The first is motivational interviewing (MI), a collaborative counseling style he developed in the 1980s to help clients with alcohol problems overcome their ambivalence about behavior change. The second theme is quantum change-his study of transformations of the “Ebenezer Scrooge” variety that are sparked by epiphanies or sudden insights.

I had an epiphany ( miracle of thought ) on 4/5/2015 it lasted for 3 days until 4/8/2015. When the fog lifted everything was “new”.
My epiphany was based on a sudden realization regarding the true nature & effect of my upbringing & the parent involved.

I’d love to see modern psychology find ways of exploring these moments of great enduring personal change. It seems inevitable that a strictly materialistic model of human beings, where every phenomenon is assumed to originate in the physical brain/body, will never be able to capture the richness and suppleness of the human experience, or the direction of cause-and-effect.

The quantum change moments sound like moments that can be conjured during psychedelic experiences

I'm using motivational and therapeutic questioning. With a rogerian way of listening. What I'm getting is massive insights from clients and some out of this world spiritual experiences. And it happens fast. I suggest you search Scott Jansen and Advance conversational hypnosis. The hypnosis is a result of the questioning and rogerian listening style but not always the outcome. Hypnosis is the bonus if it happens.

Quantum Change has been on my mind since my own hinge moment 18 years ago and I'm just now discovering the studies/books/lectures exploring this. Great presentation and follow up questions. I'm studying happiness and life satisfaction with my class and became aware of quantum change as a "thing" connected with truly happy individuals. Many seem to have experienced a hinge moment that changes them forever.

I greatly appreciate how you have demonstrated that waiting lists don't consistently result in positive or desired change. This is of particular concern to me when it comes to serving veterans. I'm hoping that this coming Veteran's Day will remind us of the importance of acknowledging the importance of mental health support--and then providing that support. Thank you for your example.

I really appreciated the question about right-brain experience and the possibility that when the endless left brain “thinking” activity is quieted down, this kind of wholistic experience (which is always there) can come forward. To me this doesn’t reduce profound experiences to mere brain glitches, but highlights that our capacity for great attunement is currently there and fully operational. But in our complicated society this gets drowned out by the incessant need to think, analyze, and plan. We might not be able to intentionally create huge spiritual epiphanies, but maybe we can set ourselves up for them with the many known simpler practices for cultivating a sense of spaciousness, resourcefulness, and ongoing concern for the welfare of others.

Something like Quantum Change is described in Yoga teachings. I am not an expert in Yoga, but Kundalini is difficult to achieve..
Kundalini (Sanskrit kuṇḍalinī, कुण्डलिनी, About this sound pronunciation (help·info), "coiled one"), in yogic theory, is a primal energy, or shakti, located at the base of the spine. Different spiritual traditions teach methods of "awakening" kundalini for the purpose of reaching spiritual enlightenment.[1] Kundalini is described as lying "coiled" at the base of the spine, represented as either a goddess or sleeping serpent waiting to be awakened. In modern commentaries, Kundalini has been called an unconscious, instinctive or libidinal force,[2][3][4] or "mother energy or intelligence of complete maturation".[5]
Kundalini awakening is said to result in deep meditation, enlightenment and bliss.[6]
Numerous accounts describe the experience of Kundalini awakening. When awakened, Kundalini is said to rise up from the muladhara chakra through the central nadi, called sushumna, inside or alongside the spine and reaching the top of the head. The progress of Kundalini through the different chakras leads to different levels of awakening and mystical experience, until Kundalini finally reaches the top of the head, Sahasrara or crown chakra, producing an extremely profound transformation of consciousness.[14]
Physical effects are believed to be a sign of Kundalini awakening by some,[15] but described as unwanted side effects pointing to a problem rather than progress by others.[16] The following are either common signs of an awakened Kundalini or symptoms of a problem associated with an awakening Kundalini (commonly referred to as Kundalini syndrome):
Involuntary jerks, tremors, shaking, itching, tingling, and crawling sensations, especially in the arms and legs
Energy rushes or feelings of electricity circulating the body
Intense heat (sweating) or cold, especially as energy is experienced passing through the chakras
Spontaneous pranayama, asanas, mudras and bandhas
Visions or sounds at times associated with a particular chakra
Diminished or conversely extreme sexual desire sometimes leading to a state of constant or whole-body orgasm
Emotional upheavals or surfacing of unwanted and repressed feelings or thoughts with certain repressed emotions becoming dominant in the conscious mind for short or long periods of time.[17]
Headache, migraine, or pressure inside the skull
Increased blood pressure and irregular heartbeat
    Emotional numbness
    Antisocial tendencies
Mood swings with periods of depression or mania
Pains in different areas of the body, especially back and neck
Sensitivity to light, sound, and touch
Trance-like and altered states of consciousness
Disrupted sleep pattern (periods of insomnia or oversleeping)
    Loss of appetite or overeating
Bliss, feelings of infinite love and universal connectivity, transcendent awareness
Some of the descriptions seems to be same as described by Dr. Miller research samples.
