I love this. I work at a Petsmart and I sometimes struggle when parents ask if reptiles or birds are good pets for kids. I usually tell them that if it's a younger kid, the parents absolutely HAVE to understand how to interact with the animal so they can supervise. That way both the kid and the animal will be relatively safe.
I work at PetSmart, too. Usually, I hold a reptile and tell the kids to touch them gently because they're little. Kids don't understand their size. Educating parents and kids is vital to make sure that we're sending the animal to a good home.
@Krakatoa369 I'm sorry that the stores in your area have lackluster employees. It's true that big chain stores like Petsmart and Petco have a bit of a reputation for not keeping their animals well, but it entirely depends on the employees. At my store, everyone on the pet care team is getting a degree in the life sciences and is knowledgable about the animals. We do our absolute best to keep everyone healthy, and if we notice an animal that is sick we take them off the sales floor immediately so we can treat them. Unfortunately some stores just hire whoever and dont require them to have a lot of knowledge about the animals, and those are the stores that end up having animals like frogs die :(

I'm also a pet care associate at my petsmart, and we have a great team that goes above and beyond and even fights with customers to make sure pets go to the best homes possible and get the best care. but it DOES really depend on the location! All associates will be different, as will locations w those people, if you feel a store doesn't have good enough pet care, contact corporate!

I love how patient and kind your son is towards the animals! You've taught him so many helpful skills he can use later in life when interacting with both people and animals, and I just think that's wonderful!

This kind of reminds me of my childhood going out camping and building a fire. Yes, fires are dangerous! Absolutely supervision should always been used. So when we would go to camp we had to follow safe practices, like having water and sand in buckets close at hand, using the large firepit that was walled off and away from nearby trees, and one of my parents was always near by. And so I learned from a young age how to light and extinguish a small fire safely. I think wild animals are very much the same :) knowing the animal and the child is key, and being able to manage potential upsets

When I was born, my family had large dogs (huge dogs, by some accounts). The dogs grew accustomed to me and I just always had them around me. My parents supervised the inteactions, and while they were conserned at first, the dogs were very careful around me (e.g. they never bit me pumped into me while I crawled around). Out of that I eventually learned to not fear non-human animals regardless of their size, but to also tell when an animal did not want me around.
I think that the best lesson (beyond empathy, that honestly all children should learn) parents/guardians can teach their kids is the basics of "reading" other species around them.

Although not an exotic animal, while I was growing up, we had a cat we called Miss Kitty. I called her my cat mom. We would tease her in ways that would make her react. If she tagged me, I knew better than to go to my mom, because she would only tell me I got what I deserved, or I would get worse from her than I got from our cat. On the other hand, Miss Kitty trusted me enough to have her kittens on my bed, and use me as surrogate prey to teach those kittens how to hunt. Once she felt the kittens had enough practice with me, then she would take them outside to hunt the real thing.
Now an exotic animal. I had a pet Brazilian Mouse Possum, I called Minuet. We got along great, most of the time. Though when I would reach for her to pick her up out of her cage, she would interpret that as an attack. Once in my hands, she would realize she wasn't being attacked, and calm down. We would sit on my sofa for hours playing together.
I've had a lot of pets over the years. One of my favorites was a mud-skipper. I fed the mud-skipper mostly on meal worms and flake fish food. The mud-skipper would hop into my hand, and I could walk around the house with it. I told people I was taking my fish for a walk. The mud-skipper would also eat right from my fingers. I don't recommend these because they are classified as endangered in the wild. If they are ever bred in captivity, I would be all for having another. They are very engaging little animals. Until that happens, don't buy one.
All individuals within a species will act differently in ways that even if not meant to be harmful could be dangerous for a child.
My cat, a feral rescue, will bite my nose at 3 AM to go out because he refuses to use a litter. If I am soundly asleep his little love bite can draw blood before I respond. I would not leave him in a room with a child under any circumstances.
I’m a new subscriber and love your channel!!! I think it’s especially important to have this info out there with so many people getting exotic animals and not getting informed in advance of what happens after the animal is no longer a “baby” taking a bottle and cute and cuddly!! Then the animal ends up no longer able to be reintroduced to the wild but lives out it’s days in a sanctuary or zoo, depending on what “alterations “ are made!! Thanks for all the info you provide!!

Teaching kids on how to handle and be around animals is also teaching kids on how to be empathetic. Especially the thing about guinea pigs. Good things to learn.

I grew up going to a private zoo, and we were allowed to get close to some of the animals.... camels, goats, pot belly pigs, and some more exptic animals. I learned a lot more about respect and how to behave around animals. And, considering I probably came home covered in some horrible combination of manure and mud, my immune system is top notch.

I think I was mucking out goat stalls by around 10. My family was kinda poor, so at the time my allowance was $30 a year. I remember volunteering to clean out the barn for $8! Earlier than that, I almost learned the hard way what raised hackles on a dog meant! Luckily my parents noticed before it was too late and stopped me.
Great video! I love teaching and seeing kids being taught to love and respect animals, I think it's so important to instill that in them at an early age. I'm so grateful that my parents did that for me, and took me to presentations where I got to learn about and hold various animals. One of my favorites was when I was probably about 7 or 8 and I got an enormous burmese python wrapped around me. Now I have a pet corn snake and a wish list of 10+ snakes I want to get, and I also have a gargoyle gecko and a crested gecko, as well as 2 dogs. :)
I think allowing kids to have access to exotic pets is both good and bad. First off, it allows kids to show responsibility towards having a pet, and shows the kids to have respect for nature. It’s good to see kids who actually interact with animals instead of sitting on their devices all day. Coming from an 11 year old, who has excess to multiple animals, I would say yes.
I just wish there were even more operations like yours. More specifically to have a group that respected and cared for animals so deeply in my own state. And that such groups would be allowed - encouraged - even required! - to come into schools and zoos and teach kids - and adults - some of that same respect and love.
I've always really admired how positive you are with your animals, whether you're discussing them as a guest on SciShow or here on your channel, you are always so full of joy that it just catches on. I could wish that people in my community could have a greater share of such wonderful joy.
But...I live in the "deep south" and people here have...well. Different attitudes, for the most part. Respect for animals only goes so far, and usually doesn't include "don't be mean to the opossums" or really to any other creature that has a bad reputation. Which includes coyotes, bobcats, armadillos...even non-venomous snakes. No one teaches kids how to identify snakes, at least not in schools. No one even teaches how to behave safely around a wild animal of any sort: they don't even talk about it, as if none of the kids has ever seen a wild creature. Which is ridiculous, because though I do live in a city, it's not *that* developed. We literally have a barred owl and a whole clan of kestrels right in my neighborhood. The kestrels live across the street from me! There are wild critters all over the place!!
But, if it's not "pretty" or doesn't make a good trophy, it's as if the creatures don't exist. Terrible, and sad.
But I'm planning to tell anybody who'll listen to me, about you guys and about the ideas you teach.

Growing up, I was and still am a person who washes my hands and sanitizes them after my shower. And I always wear a mask, a pair of gloves and a face shield when handling any animal and plant, exotic and otherwise, and I dispose of the gloves and wash the mask after. I would love to work at AnimalWonders after I graduate from Uni but I'll be focusing on my UECs and SPM for now.
Edit: I double glove around fish and birds in case things get messy. And regardless of what animal or plant, I have a first aid kit, hospital phone number book, cloth, wet wipes, and water just for good measure, You never know what can a cat's clipped off nail or dumbcane leaf trimming do until you have an accident. Bettter Safe than Sorry.
Also, I'm 15 this year (2021) so SPM ain't here yet, just PT3 and JUEC here in Malaysia.

I like that chilli pepper liked him when all the guinea pigs ran away from him. The guinea pigs are actually protecting themselves but chilli pepper actually is not that small as the guinea pigs. That is great.
You're a good mother to both your human kids and your animal adoptee's.
We had a parrot when I was a kid. She absolutely loved me, as I did her, and she loved to sit on my arm. She was a little larger, and I had to wear a shirt with sleeves so her claws would not dig into my arm. My Mom said our parrot knew when I would be getting home from school and would start calling for me. Unfortunately the parrot was quite old and died while I was still a kid.

Great episode! It mirrors our life, just not as exotic. I own one dog... she has 18 critters from bunnies, Guinea pigs and chickens to a tarantula bearded dragon and a bull snake that she has acquired over the years. The empathy she has learned is invaluable. Beyond that, the understanding she has gained from learning to evaluate and read each critter's bahavior is invaluable.

As mom says, “You can drown in a bathtub.” Don’t take stupid risks but accept that some risks are unavoidable.
Useing your kids to help is smart. And. My mom / mum did the same thing when I was Young I made toys for my parrot. And helped dust the bugs for the lizards

Definitely one of the most valuable lessons people can learn from a young age is to not fear animals, but respect them, their space, and their needs.

Supervision is so important! Even with dogs and cats. Every animal has a threshold that must be respected.
awesome video i think animals are great for helping everyone learn humility and respect but especially children it can really help them develop
Children need to be taught......taught the interactions, taught to read the animals, taught how to behave with respect and what is good behaviour. This needs to be taught by someone who can assist and step in where needed, and ofc they need to be supervised. Learning to behave well around other beings is a life skill that so few kids seem to be taught these days. So many of them see pets, and animals in general as toys......and that attitude slops over into interactions with other humans too....it results in the attitude that the world is just there for their entertainment. People have always been amazed at “how much personality” my pets have had over the years or “how affectionate” my cats are. It’s because A: I interact with my pets.....I spent tons of time with my pets....I hand fed my pond goldfish, my rabbit was kept indoors and was thus part of everyday life and would come out on his harness, my free ranging gps were all regularly hand fed and played with every day, and my cats were always given autonomy....if they didn’t want affection, they didn’t have it forced on them, which meant that most of the time they’d seek me out for cuddle time. B: each and every one had their boundaries respected. If they didn’t want to do”whatever” they didn’t have to. If they didn’t want to be picked up, they didn’t have to. If they didn’t want me in their space, I’d leave. This meant that on the rare occasion that I HAD to do something they didn’t like, they’d tolerate it because they trusted me.
This is brilliant. A good way to teach children not to be afraid of animals as well.
The only time I've ever been injured by an animal was by a goat at a petting zoo when I was about four/five years old. At even younger, I had fed parakeets out of my hand without incident . So yeah, supervision with any animal is key. :) And knowing what the animal is trying to communicate to you.
My Conures can be Nippy when feeding. My Pineapple don't like me touching her water and my Molly who so tamed bites me when giving her carrots. But she usually shreads the 🥕 .Yet feeding almonds slivers they take from my fingers.🙂

Rodents might be better. They can handle time without humans much better than birds, who closely bond. In addition, many rodents are nocturnal, so they would be guaranteed to sleep when you're at school. See if there is a pair of rat brothers in a local shelter! They're very smart, so they're good at keeping busy when alone and also being inquisitive and friendly when you handle them.
I was thinking you said "Parents" not "Parrots" because I was getting ready to take my great dane puppy out to potty, and looked away from the screen LOL (I had to back the video up) :)

Parrots are cheaper than kids😂😂😂 I have 3 kids and constantly tell them I should have raised guinea pigs; they're cheaper and easier to raise😝!

I want to get a pet Macaw. But I'm not sure what space I should give it and what food by what company. I want to give my Macaw a whole room to itself to have room to fly and have many activities. I want to give the bird my trust that I am a great companion to have. I also need to know what games or toys to give it? Also, what should I decorate the room with? I do not want to disturb the bird and cause any harm. None of my dogs or cats would be allowed in this room and I will feed her how many times a day? That's another thing I would like to know. If you could answer these questions that would be great. I want to make my Macaw as comfortable as possible.

I think it depends on the animal. An animal like a crested gecko or gargoyle gecko only really poses a threat if the child catches salmonella. Something like a porcupine as you said, would be very dangerous should the child fall or shout.
The first pet I remember having was a big black dog, a riesenschnauzer, or greater schnauzer. They are imposing dogs, but even though I was a lil tyke and a real brat, the most the ever did to me was growl. She easily could have whipped arpund and bit me when I waz grabbing at her fur. So yeah, teach your kids how to respect and listen to animals. :p
When I handle my birds I always wear gloves so they don’t
bite and the gloves I wear are safe for birds and my parakeet

We had wild porcupines where I grew up...they are more dangerous for dogs than to humans.
I actually laughed out loud when you said have you ever seen a 2 year old with a pile of dirt. 😂😂😂 My daughter is 13 months, and she's both the queen of spreading small things over as big an area as possible (like her cheereos) and putting everything she finds in her mouth as soon as she lays eyes on it. She also currently thinks her own shoes are good teething toys. It's going to be a long time before I give her a dust pan!

I’m 15, and have over 20 exotic animals, I even started rescuing exotics. But I am ver responsible with my animals, but I don’t recommend many others of my age to have the animals I do as they aren’t educated. I am just an extreme animal lover, to the point that I hate human interaction. I prefer animals way more. Lol, or maybe I am just crazy.

That's her husband lol he has to work another job to help support them so he's rarely in the videos or he might just be camera shy. I'm guessing they just took him off because he's not in the videos often.
