I feel like people need to know opossums LOVE eating ticks so they see them as more then just roadkill. If you hate ticks, protect the opossums.
And they dont get rabies
Alecia Star - I did NOT know that. I like them better already! Thanks for adding that.
@@xxxgames4458 Yup, their body temperature is too low to maintain the virus.
True!!!!! True!!!!!
What if I like ticks
Boundless kudos to the person who stopped to check if a roadkill opossum had babies in her pouch.
There are people who deliberately go out to find opossums killed on roads to save their babies and they call themselves "pouch pickers"--Washington Post did a very nice article on it a few years ago.
I've done this once (no babies, though!). Managed not to be too icked out, 'cause I knew it was for a good cause.
KarlBunker seriously I would never have thought to do that...wow
I just saw one yesterday, never thought to check. Now I am sad.
@@B.H.56put another way, now you know for next time
North America's only marsupial! I adore her! She'll be a great animal ambassador.
Holly odii +
So in central and south America there aren't ? Cause in central America there are opossums.
@@ladygrinningsoul357 I never said they didn't.
@@hollyodii5969
Ok, sorry
@@ladygrinningsoul357 it's all good.
I love opossums. I feel like they're one of those misunderstood animals that get a bad reputation.
Definitely! Them and ferrets get a really bad rep☹
The other week, my grandmother called me to say that she had a “rat” in her house eating her cats’ food. I got a live trap and baited it with peanut butter and, of course, some kibble. A couple days later, success. When I checked the trap, I had... a young opossum.
In any case, the “weird looking rat” was safely released near a small recreation site in the woods by a river, a few miles down a gravel road and well away from any people, so hopefully it’s living its best life now. Though, I’m sure it is missing that cat food.
I wish they lived longer. They are just adorable. Id never seen opposums and raccoons before moving to the USA, when my first raccoon came up to me I almost thought it was a loose pet of some sort. It was very friendly. We have one where I work named Hank. He is a big sweetheart, and loves to hold hands.
The possums in Australia are very different to the ones in the USA (not just in appearance), but I used to have two girl possums climb into my window at night to look for food, they loved getting into my pantry and tearing into my breadcrumbs or oats. They would explore my whole apartment, even my bedroom. They would even sleep inside by the window when it was raining.
Glen Be that's hilarious! I've seen pictures of the ones from Australia and they are so cute. I don't think we have animals like that where I'm from(Sardinia) I used to love watching the hedgehogs in my garden though, they were my favorite
D'aww. Precious.
@SteelersPenguinsPirates I can't keep my mouth shut although I probably should. I'm here because I like animals. My wife and I are conservatives. She is an immigrant. I helped her do the paperwork correctly. We went through the process. It wasn't very difficult and I'm not politically connected in any way. She is a US citizen now. If someone chooses to sneak across the border or overstay a visa, of course they get sent back. What would happen in any country if someone sneaks in? They get sent back or in some countries maybe jailed or shot. So your comment about republicans is an extreme insult and a total lie.
@SteelersPenguinsPirates That's a much different statement than your last statement. When I see "all immigrants" I know it's wrong and you sounded like a troll. The government has adjusted visa policies many times. There will be many adjustments in the future as well. It's the way it is. If you want to change those policies, be active in a positive way, like talking to your representatives in congress or writing something constructive in a forum that is on subject, not about small animals. I came here because I like possums, not to see an extreme statement about immigration. Sorry, you hit a soft spot for me. I've helped several immigrants navigate the process, usually with good results. I studied their situation and showed them what would likely work. I suggest you do the same for the individual or family you know that wants to immigrate. Study our system and dedicate some time and effort to help that person or family. I think you will find a path that will be successful. From experience, I know it's not impossible. I've had success with both conservatives and liberals in the White House.
I grew up in the country; I LOVE POSSUMS! Those little ears and teensy pink nose are too cute!!! Glad she's found such a wonderful home with you!💖💖💖💖💖
opossums are the ideal intersection of nasty and precious
Kermit is an oposum? ;P
You're half right.
@@eelsoirdor3573 I feel exactly the opposite about them.
@@delusionnnnn why?
@@eelsoirdor3573 Well, explaining why you think something is nasty and unlovely is always going to come down to taste, so I won't pretend it's anything more than that. The tiny eyes to huge mouth ratio probably doesn't help, and the association with garbage, too.
I'm so glad Ophie came to live with you! I'm excited for her to be an ambassador for her amazing, and VERY misunderstood species! The don't carry rabies. They eat nasty bugs that make us sick. They won't go after your pets. They aren't "overesized rats." I used to think all those things until I learned more about them. Now I love them!
She's extremely fortunate and in good hands with you and your team.
If you see an Oppossum in the road please stop and pull them to the side! If you do not see obvious trauma sometimes the are just "playin' 'possum" lol. Something may have scared them and they are frozen. Check the spot to see if they have revived. The pouch opening is on their belly and looks like a small hole. I have found a few babies myself and taken them to wildlife rescue. Their are vids on TH-cam of what needs to be done. Mother Nature thanks you in advance for any effort given to save her critters!😘💕 thanks for reading....signed, Ellie Mae Clampett🤣
It is absolutely amazing to see so much love for opossums in the comments, you are fostering a lovely community
What a sweet girl. An act of kindness allowed this beautiful animal to live.
I know Opossums are not considered traditionally "cute" but I love them and Ophelia is absolutely adorable!
Opossums are totally adorable. They pretend to be fierce, but they don't really want to bite or fight.
Ophelia is so adorable! I can't wait to see more of her 😍
She’s an absolute treasure i hope she stays healthy and happy
Ophelia is such a darling! Thank you for caring for her and challenging her so she can have the best life possible.
What a precious little animal
I love her! She seems so snuggly
Oh my god, she is ADORABLE. There are no opossums where I live, but damn I wish there were. I think they're cute and awesome.
I love her 🥺 how do we check opossum pouches? How do you tell a female from a male?
There are vids on TH-cam of how and what to look for. You have to be sure they are dead and not just playing possum😂 Once you rescue you will be hooked. Such a useful animal desrves us looking out for them👍
Only females have pouches.
The male testicles are just as obvious as a dog and they have no pouch.
Dudes have balls. :P
She is sweet! God Bless.
Nocturnal and likes to sleep 18 hours a day? Hmm, I wonder if I might be part opossum. 😉
I love Opossums. She is so lucky to have been saved.
Look at that little nose go! What a sweetheart ❤️
I live in Minneapolis, in the heart of the city. I was surprised and excited to see an opossum in the early morning hours not long ago. What made my experience even more interesting was the coloring, it was a black morph. He or she was an almost solid black except for a few white/grey hairs around its long muzzle. It is great to see such a rare critter up here, being at the northerly extent of their habitat. I love how the city has many parks and most but not all properties have one or more trees. With such an abundance of trees and wild areas even in the city, I come across many things I would not expect such as the opossum. My favorite find was a mustelid, it was early evening and they ran across the bike path. With it being almost dark I could not verify species or coloring but it had the unmistakable long body and arched back while it ran and bounded across the path. I would guess at it being a long tailed weasel or a mink.
Their ramge is extending further north. Probably a result of global warming.
It's something to think that today's cities were forests or grasslands not too long ago and were the ancient stomping grounds for the opossums and they remember those spaces from long ago. It's not hard I bet to look around your city and imagine the ancient trees in place of the buildings and the rushing rivers or brooks that were at one time there.
She's adorable! That little pink nose!❤❤❤
Oh my goodness, she is precious and I love her ❤️😍
God Bless the lady that found the babies and for you taking care of her. Be well.
Such an adorable little tripossum!
I love opossums. One visits my porch every night to see if there are any snacks like spilled bird seed or fruit. Tonight he had some bits of veggie pizza crust :)
Good luck with Ophelia!! Keep her running around!
I just love opossums! They are a weird kind of cuteness.
I love seeing the opossum that hangs out in our back yard.
I love he so much! We have so many opossums that live in our neighborhood. They are my friends!
I love opposums they're such cool animals and she is sooo sweet!! ❣
I love you so much Ophelia
We have an Opossum who sleeps in our compost on our patio. We dubbed them Kevin, and leave berries for them. They have to climb two stories to get to us, so I'm not too worried about them fattening up.
What a cute and adorable creature! Oh, and the opossum is nice, too.
what a little cutie! i love her already
It’s my dream to work with animals like this, birds, opossums, foxes and more, I want to go into the field because I know it would make me so happy!
I just started wildlife rehabilitation classes and it’s awesome!!!
I've been waiting for you guys to get an opossum! So happy!!!! She's a lucky girl
Jessi, I love how you consider all animal lives as precious.
Thank you for giving Ophelia such tender love and care. 💟😍
She's so freakin' CUTE! I live in an area where only now (as in, the last two years or so) people are finally starting to "get it" that opossums are really important and good creatures to have around. At least the practice of shooting the poor things on sight stopped decades ago - well I should say, the county officials and so forth don't shoot them. In the very rural areas, it's a toss up, most of the people here who were born in the 30s and 40s still think of opossums as a combination of "bad pest" and "acceptable stew item."
We had an opossum living basically underneath our mobile home, years ago - I'm reasonably certain she was a female, and she was HUGE. She was also very, very mannerly and kept a big swath of our property completely free of rats, trash, and basically most anything else yucky. I even saw her catch a small snake once. We didn't exactly feed her, but we didn't bar her from digging around in our compost area.
Unfortunately a lot of my in-laws were not so tolerant. One of my husband's uncles tried to poison her with blocks of rat poison, for instance. (She ate them and then came to my very doorstep, kind of like she was asking "got any more of that spicy candy?") And I got a lot of complaints, despite the fact that she wasn't going into anyone else's yard or troubling anyone. But, when someone's dogs got out and began roaming the neighborhood one night - well, they found her, and battle ensued. She was defending herself, I want to stress that: these dogs went after her even after she tried to retreat and hide from them. Maybe that was just instinct for the dogs, which were mixed-breed but with some definite Dachshund traits... In any event, when the fight was over, only one dog ran home, injured. The other dog didn't make it. The opossum, being a tough cookie indeed, was fine. I'm not sure if she was hurt or not, it wasn't possible for me to actually check her over after all...
But I was forced to call animal control at that point, what with an angry neighbor and relative having a fit over the unfortunate incident. I knew that if I did the phone call, I could make some kind of plea for the opossum's life. I expected the animal control guys to be more or less ready to kill her right away - but to my relief, they were immediately concerned for the opossum. They brought out a live trap and the next day, she was caught in it. They were astonished when they came to collect her, and said they'd never seen one so big and relatively healthy. Apparently she was somewhat obese, but not as much as you might have thought given her size - almost twenty pounds!!! They promised me that they had a good patch of territory picked out for her, where she could live happily and safe from dogs...and humans.
So little Ophelia makes me REALLY happy
That's really sweet that you cared so much. Hopefully she was rehomed smoothly. We dont really have opossums in canada, or atleast not my part, and I always thought they were viscous. Atleast that's what the tv shows told me.
@@kaliward8850 yes, there's a weird dichotomy here, half of the "everybody knows" regarding them is that they are terrible nasty vicious rodents. But the other half is adorable pictures of them hanging by their tails and how they eat ticks and how they don't get rabies (or rather, are more resistant to it, I don't think it's actual immunity but anyway)
Sometimes I enjoy living where I do, there are so many opportunities for wild-life adventures. But other times I'm kinda not into it LOL
@@Beryllahawk it's the same here with lots of types of wildlife. Just different ones sometimes. I always liked it alot
Thank you for sharing her with us!
As of this pot there are seven 👎🏻. They must be the ones that aim for animals in the road while driving. My heart goes out to Jessi whose care and love for these animals make me happy.
Oh possums are so precious 💖
Very unique animals. I've got one, he lives in bedroom. He's not locked up. Doesn't roam much. I can pet him, carefully!! He doesn't like fast moves, he loves to eat and sleep. So they're all different!
She's so cute and awesome! 💛
Ooooh poor baby!!!!!!!!! She's beautiful Jessi 💝💝💝💝
So cute. My kitty drools when he's happy.
There was an opossum living on the stairs of my apartment building in Chicago. We couldn't touch it but it was surprisingly unafraid for a wild animal.
We fed it raisins and cat food.
what a very charming critter !!!
I had a rescue possum years ago. Roscoe was found on the side of the road in his momma's pouch. Both his back legs were paralyzed. Poor thing had to tolerate having doll clothes put on him. Other than that he had a good life for a couple years. What a great experience for me!
WOW I didn't know that I knew so little about this common animal! They are so cute and fascinating!
Awwww, such a cute creature!
OMG, I had no idea opossums were so cute! Wish you both good and healthy times.
Sending love to Ophelia, the Opossum.
When I was a kid we took care of an opossum that had been abandoned by its mother. We kept it in a large cage on our enclosed porch during the winter and released it in the spring.
A Patron idea: Live feeds. Access to live feed of different animals. :)
We've adopted one, In a way, (Pauly) who is even allowed in the garage in the worst of our nebraska winter days. He let's me hand feed him goodies, but loves a helping of catfood of his own when we feed the outdoor cats. It really saddens me that I've never even thought to stop and check an opposum's pouch, when coming across one that had been hit😞. I definitely will from now on!
wow! she seems amazing! im so excited to learn more about opossums :)
I had such a worried expression for Ophelia during the entire video, glad she looks so happy
bless these kinds of people.
Opossums are awesome animals thery are getting very popular. The first year they will or can bite but they mellow out as they get older and they are very loving pets.
She's such a good happy girl!
Opossums are the sweetest mammals, full stop.
So cute! I'm glad she survived.
She's so cute! I love her 😍
Hers so sweet.
I raised one a few years ago💞
SHE'S FREAKING ADORABLE HOLY HECK!!!!!!!!!
Opossums are awesome and unique.
Beautiful. Pretty garbage cat. We love her.♥️
Nice video. Ophi is adorable!!
Ophelia is adorable Possums make great pets
She's such a sweetie!
Hey Jessi. Been seeing you on a lot of the videos (especially SciShow Kids) that I show my students (grade 1 to 5) and they always enjoy it. Keep up the good work and looking forward to seeing more of your videos!
Haha so cute, I knew a cat that would drool when you pet it lol
Ophelia is adorable and I love her!
I just love opossums! ❤️
Oh my goodness she is adorable Jessi ☺
I am a possum lover and Ophelia is so darn cute ❤
Love these guys!
A perfect candidate for remaining in captivity and a perfect placement for such an animal! I love oppossums- when I did rehab they were one of my favorite species. They are so gentle and the babies are adorable! I have always been taught that the first "o" is silent in oppossum, I even have it from one of North America's best oppossum rehabbers (she even publishes studies on them!) that the "o" is silent. Jessi, are you pronouncing it with the "o" because of accent differences or is it similar to how American bison are bison not buffalo but people call them buffalo anyway?
🥰🥰🥰Aaawww, what a cutie pie!
I love opossums so much omg
That's a fine pointy kitty you have there. ☺
What a great video. Very informative and wholesome.
They're like cats loving to keep themselves clean 🙂
Aw, she and Huckleberry can be physical therapy students together! (Yay for indigenous north american wildlife!)
Ophie is such a cute nickname
Shes so cute !!🥺❤️
I’m really glad you have an opossum becauseI’m scared of them and would like to not be. The fear started when I was a child and walked up onto our porch at night. I noticed that the lis was off the cat food container (a big plastic trash can). I looked in quickly before I put the lid on and was met face to face with a giant, fat opossum, its mouth agape, staring out of the dark with its skull-white face.
*shiver* nightmare fuel!
(To be fair, I know it was scared too)
omg I love her
Ophelia is so lucky. The person who found the two babies has taught us, through Animal Wonders, to check the pouch if we find a dead opposum.
How do you keep the fleas from the mammals you take care of at AW?
I love Ophelia!
I have little love for 'possums. However, I am very glad that Ophelia and her sibling were rescued from certain death. (saving a baby is more important than how one feels about the species in my opinion) And for Ophie herself, may I just say "Life before Death my little friend. Help Jessie teach us all why your species is cool and beneficial to us all"
I love possums 😊
What a cutie! I'm glad she got a second chance
Нормальный парень апоссум
Oh the cuteness 😍
