Can't have enough with the launch of the CT, Semi, energy storage and eventual compact car platform.
Only the Powerwalls use the 2170 form factor cells. The CT and Semi use 4680s.
@@levenkay4468not 4680 in the Pepsi semi
I bet they are killing off 4680 and these cheap batteries will be ready to replace them.
That's what I was thinking...... for the semi .....
One good reason to stockpile is a planned outage/retooling at a battery production facility, like Giga Nevada installing the CATL LFP equipment before they have the new segments of the factory ready.
Could be as simple as they've ordered batteries for the sales growth they were expecting, but that with softening demand, parts are piling up somewhat?
this is so obvious.... why the heck wouldn't he say this in the video.
Could be. They're famous for not bailing out of the contracts they had in pandemic. Unlike gm Merc., etc. Gains supplier loyalty.
what about utilizing back parts of 4680 prod. units and warm up ? huh ?
You're a nut job
@@andrewsaint6581 Actually On Semi reported a big miss last year because Tesla cancelled their order for inverters due to production at Texas and Berlin being less than half of what they had expected. And they have being cancelling supplier orders in China and have screwed Chinese suppliers who built supply chains in Mexico...
too many options to choose. I figure one of there battery sources may be retooling soon... and they are stockpiling prior to that retooling. If you have ever helped in a factory retooling.. you will know they never finish on time,
Could be for Tesla Power Walls
Or megapacks.
Or Tesla ride on mowers and tractors.
@@JoeyBlogs007 Tesla refrigerators with built in battery backup! How about Tesla AC units?

My guess is that they want enough LG batteries to be able to use them in the refreshed M3, which would make it eligible for the $7500 US tax credit. This would drop the starting price of a M3 down to about $31.5k in the US.
1) because tesla needs batteries not only for cars but for their BESS.
2) they will prioritize the best batteries for their vehicles and any other for their BESS
3) they are buying those because those factories are the ones with available capacity.
Stockpiling is the wrong word for it... they are simply increasing WORKING INVENTORY levels, which strategically gives them increased OPTIONS.
Proper inventory planning dictates that the product arrive just in time for the demand. Excess inventory is bad. You can’t argue that demand is increasing, because we know that with prices and interest rates remaining high, demand is seriously dampened. So, these excess batteries are a bad sign for Tesla.
And Rivian is supposedly stockpiling a huge amount of their completed vehicles.
I wonder why ?
Rivian is busy deliverying vehicles and charging stations to Amazon. Rumor is that Amazon may take over Rivian and produce their own vehicles in addition to the 100,000 they have already ordered. May make EVs cars to sell on their platform.
Tesla is smart enough to recognise a good deal when it sees one . These batteries would work well in Tesla Mega packs at the new factory Tesla leased to make "Batteries "if you remember back a few months ago . Next up to get Tax incentive the batteries have to be made in the USA which these were .
Stockpiles lead to box shifting.
Doesn't bode well.
You will never know until they make an announcement. Speculate all you like.
Dead right. But I'm prepared to speculate this far: it will turn-out be a smart move.
@@duncanedwards8258 When the Tesla stock goes down to these levels the stories from Shorts and Longs tend to go wild. I would LOVE to see it dip below $100 in the next few months so I can pick up even more shares. However, given the downward trajectory of battery prices IF this is true it means they are going to do something with all these batteries sooner rather than later.
Stockpiling is usually done in fear of an imminent shortage. Perhaps it fears that BYD and/or CATL will not be able to supply, or may be forced to stop supply to Tesla in an anticipated trade war?
A hedge against a possible future scarcity of Cells/batteries. I used to stockpile train car and semi loads of Plywood and framing material against scarcity and rapidly rising costs.
Tesla has also built a 11,000 car parking garage at GigaTexas.
They’re massively sandbagging.
The fact you don’t consider the negative explanation of this oversupply is a worry, Sam. And I am a fan.
Tesla Roadster(The model lost to the mists of time! ):)
Roadster 2 finally being built??? That’s the final announced Tesla vehicle that hasn’t been built yet. (Model 2/4/A hadn’t been officially announced yet and Cyber ATV doesn’t count)
Roadster could explain the nickel in the batteries 🙂
"No one knows" .... I know, they were stuck with a purchase agreement and now can't sell their own cars. They are done long-term.
Only so many batteries being produced, if Tesla is buying them all no one else can, which means no one else can ramp up production and become profitable.
Optimus?
Looking forward to the Tesla Model 2 Short range. Will consider buying when it hits the market.
Don’t…
2046.
The battery will be used in power grid.
One word. Competition. As legacy auto finally gets their act together to producing electric vehicles the demand for batteries and the supply chain for battery materials is going to tighten up. If Tesla has batteries stockpiled that gives them a cushion from legacy auto's occupying a greater share of the batteries available. Legacy auto's willingness to lose money to win market share and hurt Tesla may mean that they will be willing to pay more for batteries than Tesla. This would leave battery suppliers most likely selling their limited output of batteries to the highest bidder, which would be most likely legacy auto.
These are the games that happen all the time is monopoly/oligopoly scale business. Tesla is looking at the future and is preparing now, while legacy auto struggles to produce and sell EVs in volume, for when they finally start producing and selling in greater volume.
Eventually paying too much for batteries and losing money is not sustainable for legacy automakers, so when battery supply rises to meet demand and prices come down again, Tesla will be back to purchasing batteries again to meet its production goals.
Sam, do you remember when you were questioning all the battery gigafactories being built in the US? Batteries are going to transform every aspect of modern life. From electric vehicles, to distributed generation, to grid-scale replacement of gas peaker plants, to electric everything. Batteries are the one thing they all have in common. They are transformative. We, at this time, are only scratching the surface of what demand will be in the future.
These type of batteries are tailor made for performance models, right? So, they’re either for the Model 3 Performance or maybe even the new and as yet unreleased new version of the Tesla Roadster.
"Cells", not batteries.
While I agree that boat has sailed. I don't know anyone who goes into a store asking for cells. Yeah maybe a AA Cell size battery but they still think they are batteries. What can I say. English is a living language.
Semantics
@@larryc1616 Not Semantics.. We get the word battery from the military of old. Where a group of cannons or guns was called a battery. In electricity a group of cells make up a battery. Neither a single gun or a single cell are a battery.
An AAA cell is not a battery but the 9V battery is not a cell because if you open one up you will find multiple cells.
@@danharold3087I agree, I have similar problems with the word “decimate”. Technically, Tesla just decimated their work worse. Reduced by 1/10th, NOT reduced TO 1/10th
A battery is a 'cell' when combined with other batteries in a unit. A battery becomes a 'cell' when it is a repeating entity in an assembly.
A jail becomes a cell when combined with others.
Maybe there is something coming in August that nobody expects?
Tesla vehicle production has been cut back from previously projected. Battery supply chain has not adjusted quickly enough and overproduced in anticipation of the previously higher anticipated production. Therefore, more batteries than cars to put them in, increasing inventory. This happens frequrently when production is cut back.
"LG is Korean but makes batteries in US" while on the screen another time is Poland, EU. Viking must love Poland since when he talks about other countries or even continents he sometimes shows Poland yet doesnt mention its name.
energy storage??
Wow.. did you see that massive pile of batteries ? No, neither did I. The main reason Tesla went to CATL for packs was because they couldn't keep up the supply.
Hey Sam... You mentioned the clear solar panels in one episode. That would be very cool to incorporate into the glass roof of Tesla vehicles. Perhaps they'd rather have people going to Superchargers? Still, I think it would be a very cool addition! For someone like my parents who just go shopping once a week, it would be ideal. It would also help keep the 12V battery healthy and Sentry mode wouldn't drain the battery quite so fast.
2170 can be used by the Semi, now that its had thorough testing can ramp volume
NMC batteries have bigger energy dencity - hence lighter - ideal for smal cars. Also can be produced in volumes.
Battery storage growing
Tesla has quite a few near term product lines beyond vehicles that will go through their stockpile very quickly. Bots in space is one of my personal favorites.
They might be for Teslabots to improve manufacturing efficiency in America. That would be worth keeping quiet about.
I agree. Humanoid form robots replacements for most of the current employees is inevitable.
And in our lifetime!!
I'd guess two, three years, when the S curve starts going straight up.
ICE cars will not be purchased, everyone will want to switch.
A strong economy, and more price drops...AI gets smarter...20,000 Teslabots...dancing in perfect unison, all of them.
Bending, twisting, spreading the lubrication in thier joints. Then off to work in Gigafactory Nevada, all three shifts, not long to wait...two, three years.
What batteries are used in the megapacks?
How about LR and performance model. Replacement parts also.
They said in the past that they wanted to renovate/replace the 1865 lines. in Nevada They were the first one made and it is old tech... its possible that they stockpile to create a buffer when they do that. They might be months without any output from those lines.
Tesla buyers still get the government subsidy with batteries from South Korea instead of China.
it's not how many cars you produce.
it's how many cars you sold.
I don't think they are saying all of the additional supply was due to Tesla.
Could the stockpile be for the Model Y long range rear wheel drive?
Hey Tesla... There's room in my garage, if you wanna store some batteries in there !! 😅
Maybe this has something to do with the IRA. Is something changing with the IRA rules later in the year? Is there some incentive for Tesla to buy more batteries at this time, to get the IRA battery credit that manufacturers get?
I think Optimus will be so significant that our grandchildren will be surprised that Tesla made cars.
You don’t stockpile as a consequence of not selling enough vehicles . Sales are healthy even if temporarily low . It makes sense to purchase cheaper batteries now rather than pay higher prices later this year . Lithium prices are expected to go up in the second half of 2024.
What about the Cyber Truck?
Could it be that they are stockpiling for their energy business segment?
Legacy auto backtracked on production leaving battery prices in free fall = opportunity for Tesla to produce model 2 in quantity at low price
Is it just me, or am I hearing Tezler substituted for Tesla and and invent-tree substituted for inventory? Could be my old ears.
To sell cars with 7500 tax rebate
It seems obvious to me. The robots are coming!! Maybe some batteries for Powerwall 3 but we have not seen a recent update on Optimus. I believe they are also going to have an AI day this year with a third generation Optimus unveil that is in limited production. They have to put them in real world situations. They need many robots to do that and many robotaxis also. I believe they are about to produce many of these two products in the next 6 months. “Balls to the wall”
Viking, I am going to give you some advice that will help you regain your credibility. Instead of aggressively declaring that you were going to shut down your channel if you were wrong about Tesla layoffs and then deleting/editing that video when you turned out to be wrong, "You should have said something like "Ok, I was dead wrong and overconfident, yadda yadda yadda." You would have actually gained credibility among the people that do take you seriously instead of spawning a lot of videos responding to your error and subsequent attempt to hide you were wrong. Seriously, no one expects you to shut down your channel even with that proclamation, its obviously a main source of income for you. Most people will forgive mistakes, its always the cover up that people are sick of because it is SOP for corporations and politicians. A serious person will evaluate your information through comparison of other sources, and not really care you went over the top on some issue. As it stands you are now a good example of how to make a minor mistake due to your emotional attachment to Tesla into a big pile of dog poop.
GAFL, who cares? You've done the exact thing you're levelling at Viking, hypocrisy isn't a good look either DF

Maybe chill I'm EV sales means a shift towards more home batteries? Solar power needs more home batteries and that at an affordable price. Preferably with LFP
Maybe they are doing it to start using American made batteries on the model 3 so it qualifies for the tax credit
Since these are US-produced cells, would they make vehicles eligible for the $7500 U.S. Federal tax credit?
Right now, Model 3 is ineligible because of the battery - maybe they’re trying to make it eligible again? If they can make Model 3 a roughly $30,000 car for people earning up to $150K (single)/$300K (married) per year, that makes it much more competitive with budget ICE sedans like the Honda Civic that are in the $25K-$30K price range.
I think they’re going to use them to ramp up the $25,000 car and the Robo taxi at the same time. I think they will eventually include the new batteries but I think they want it to go out now.
With CATL and BYD halving the prices of their batteries in August 2024 this would be a really stupid move if it would be true. But it's just speculation.
So, let’s say in a couple of years I decide to buy a Tesla. The most important component in my new Tesla could already be 2 or 3 years old if it’s come from this stockpile. There would be some degradation, not much probably, but even if it lost just one or two percent, that wouldn’t be acceptable to me as a potential buyer. I would want to see the date stamp on the battery. What do others think about this?
🔌🔌During a recent DriveElectricAZ event, a industrial engineer associated with Tucson AZ Sion Power's 490Wh/Kg LFP pouch-type hybrid battery is scheduled to go into 2026 production at LG Energy's Queen Creek AZ plant. I hope Cummins is still working with Sion Power.🔌🔌
I think Tesla is ramping up energy production using these batteries.
Also they may continue using them in semi since 4680 production has not ramped high enough yet.
If they are stockpiling LG 2170s isn't that in the 2024 M3P? If those batteries are mostly made in the U.S then it can get the $7500 tax incentive again in the near future. Just waiting.
They may have signed a contract.....
Didn't LG batteries often catch fire ?
Those were the pouch cells. These are the cylindrical cells.
Energy storage business!
I am getting a little worried about Q2…..
With the daily release of ground-breaking battery technology, stock-piling any single battery type is a bit of a gamble.
But King Elon is never wrong, right?
Maybe they look at it as just another commodity that they can buy low and sell high. Might be that simple.
👍👍
Risky. Lithium batteries have a shelf life. They degrade over time, even if not used. Batteries, like any other "perishable" item need to be purchased just before installation and sale, to be at their best. The other possibility, would be for "Power walls", "Mega packs" and other stationary energy storage applications. Tesla may even decide to put electrical energy storage in their "Super charger" sites. If that's the case, those cells may already be allocated. It would seem though, that for "Mega packs" LiFePO4 would be the better choice, where the home energy storage "Power walls" might still use the Li-NCM for the greater capacity in a smaller size.
If they’re truly stockpiling batteries, then again as I’ve said before, it’s to control the EV market. It’s a very similar situation as the memory chips with Nintendo and they were pretty much buying all the chips and they had complete control on who got the chips and who didn’t a complete monopoly on the industry. Now I’m not saying that they are like I said we don’t even know if this is technically true but if they are, it’s smart.
In order for robot taxi to work properly (Tesla) and the federal government are really gonna have to make some grants to restructure the landscape where there is enough adequate charging for such a department or service to the community. Could you imagine how horrible it would be if a robot taxi suddenly died With somebody in it or for that matter to or more? No, is that traffic violation? It could potentially be a danger to those who are not full self driving or robot taxi those of us who are still driving our own vehicles so I’m not saying that Elon or (Tesla) are not considering all these, but these are things to think about, definitely need to make a backlog of questions. OK what about this? What about this? What about this? OK that’s good but what about this? It’s just stuff that we have to think about. Yes it’s super cool. Yes, I think it would cause less fatalities because I think naturally people are very reckless in their vehicles, and it’s fatalities that could be avoided. But we definitely need to take a strong caution to robot taxi and full self driving.
Is the chemistry of all this batteries the same? Maybe it's a new one?
Something strange is going on cheers mate
Whats tha, Tesla are stockpiling obsolete batteries? Brilliant plan.
Maybe they're buying them for storage solutions
Tesla needs to get the Model 3 to qualify for the $7500 tax credit.
I thought tha LG cells vere the ones that was recalled the most from all of the bat makers.
I’m not sure it is Tesla buying these batteries.

We dont need these EVS and their dead slaves in the Congo.
The possibility of oil prices rising to 150 dollars a barrel this summer will increase demand for electric vehicles. Ukraine is going to put Russia oil out of existence. Maybe 200 dollars a barrel of oil.
In-VEN-tree! We need to start a drinking game every time we hear in-VEN-tree! Don’t LG batteries kind of suck? Aren’t they the ones that catch fire most often? Also why buy 2170 batteries? Is Tesla still not able to mass-produce 4680 batteries?
Robots?
They are stockpiling for the Mars colony which will be ready in 2019.....wait.... nevermind.
I find it strange mate how you can pronounce some of these peoples names
I think they are preparing for the release of the $25,000 car. Maybe that will be announced/released in August. They were intending to sell a TON of them. Maybe that will be released in August.
That would explain them needing a whole bunch of batteries.
what the car that was supposed to be produced in 2023? which it may be '24 although reports are now saying '25
But no Mexico plant, after Mexico upgraded infrastructure. Like The Tesla Space pointed out, these aren't like the Cybertruck where people would be willing to wait years, these are going to be for peoples primary car. If they could hit that price target they would need to produce a lot of them fast. I agree that the model 2 is more likely to be designated to the Robotaxi, it not only removes price target, it could also be a lot more profitable.
These are for the bot.
Tesla shares have fallen 37% this year so far, 14,000 laid off and tesla sales also dropped
stock piling? more like over stocked and not used also LG has issued a safety warning on their cells when storing
14,000 people and it didn't spark any investor confidence, they would have been better off overproducing cars in hopes of $250 oil, which some traders have actually bet on last week, be it at a low entry price but still.
buy Tesla shares while there cheap because gas is expensive and getting more expensive and the Solar /renewable revolution is underway
"Energy Is Money", and batteries are like banks, storing energy for later use. What happened in Germany, when they took out one electric pole and shut down GigaBerlin(?) So what if the EV sector slumps, because Megapack and Powerwall production is ramping. If EVs were all Tesla had to sell there might be a problem, but energy is critical to everything Tesla sells. Batteries from everywhere/everyone are critical to Elon's 'core' mission of clean/renewable energy, and would you rather have Tesla with more storage, or spend billions buying oil for a "strategic reserve" and putting it back into the ground(...?) Damn, that's just stupid(!) Yeah, Elon has batteries, and contracts/plans for more batteries, but the only relevant question is ..."How many keys in your wallet"($)🤑😂🤣
Musk might be thinking that Trump will win, and he'll slap tariffs on batteries from outside US. If that happens, the battery price even for US-made batteries will go way up.
I wonder why they does it ? Do they know something that we don't? I think so and the question should be why? Elon has satellite and see all the movement on the earth? that is scary what does he see to make him do so?
Are these reports as reliable as the reports that thousands of employees being fired, and your claims about that?
Tesla sales are finished
When battery prices are falling year on year like a rock, it is a foolish business decision to overstock batteries
Much more likely is that tesla is contractually obligated to purchase agreed battery quantities each month, and car sales aren't keeping up with battery supply. Hence a stock build appears
NMC (Nickel Manganese Cobalt) batteries have the highest energy density among the popular type of Lithium ion chemistries.
The best use case for such batteries would therefore be the Semi, Model S, Model X, or Roadster.
No cobalt should be used in batteries. No lithium either.
