- Are your motorcycle boots capable of mitigating injury in the event of a crash?
I asked myself this after having my foot/toe crushed in a recent crash. True, the boots that I was wearing at the time prevented me from sustaining more serious injury but had I been wearing a different boot...would the injury I sustained have been less. Something I thought about while I was on the couch healing for almost three weeks.
In this video I talk and show the evolution of motorcycle boots I'v owned/worn and how my most recent crash lead me to purchasing the Gaerne SG12 boots. I had decided to replace my boots and I did a lot of research on the Gaerne SG12, Sidi Crossfire and the Alpinstar Tech 7. The level of protection I wanted as well as comfort (large toe box-wider boot) narrowed it down to the Gaerne SG12. So, buy once cry once!

They have protected me very well during several drops

I almost went with the Tech 7s but figured at some point I'd end up with The Gaerne SG12s so just got it over with. You are correct, you will drop the bike...just a matter of when. Thanks for watching! Stay safe out there!
Did you consider the Tech 10?
I ride the same mighty pig. Was running street wheels and tires on mine and low sided it breaking my ankle and tearing a ligament. Not going to do that again! Gone are the days of "riding shoes" for me. Shopping for a good boot now
Completely agree -- for off-road riding with my KTM 690, I invested in Gaerne SG10's. Several times I had mishaps when I knew the injury would been really bad had I been wearing my ADV boots (Alpinestars Corozal) - whereas with the SG10's I was completely fine. For me ADV boots are fine for street, that's it. I'm not the best rider, nor a fast rider, and I do drop the bike, and will continue to do so.

SG 12 has been the gold standard for MC boots. Now the new SG 22 is out and the Sidi X-Power SC. Many good choices.
Great review. Iam a street rider and was looking for good protection. My Gaerne Fastbacks arrived today and I took them for a ride. They are much more protective than the line up you’ve shown except less than the SG12’s. Toe box and sole - Very rigid. Ankle- good protection- not as stiff as SG. I felt like Frankenstein shifting the old motto Guzzi 1100 but hope to get used to it. They were true to size and not bad to walk in with hinged ankle. Lees $ than SG’s , leather/ plastic, plastic buckles. I feel pretty good about the protection and I may adapt pegs / shifter.
Dave. I have to chime in. All the boots you showed were really more adventure boots. Without getting into a debate when we ride we assume risk as with everything in life. I agree for the riding you do a solid moon boot may be your best option but for others on a 300 mile day you may want something with a little bit of comfort. There are no wrong choices other than not gearing up. Ride safe bud. Glad you are well on the road to a full recovery.
I'd have to agree with you, as I mentioned...ultimately the choice is up to the individual...just wear the gear! Stay safe and I appreciate the words!
The G12s are beauties. Unfortunately, after a week of wearing them around the house, I returned them due to hotspots in the outer toebox. Went to the Alpinestars Toucan, designed and developed in Italy. Giving up some armour for comfort and goretex waterproof tech. Had to add the longer gear shifter to my '22 KLR to get the stiffer boots under. Like others have commented...choose your comfort vs risk factor.
Its always a good conversation when your talking about protection. I have had a lot of luck with motocross boots but they are not very comfortable at all. That price is hard to swallow up front but having to have ankle or foot surgery cause it got crushed and possibly ending your riding career is worth every penny you got. I wonder if you would have been on the KLR you would have been going slower cause you are on the KLR. lol.. Its hard to say cause so much variable (butterfly effect) but your experience is solid and those are some nice boots! Ride your Ride!
If I had been on the KLR on that road I would probably have been doing the same speed just because I would have been comfortable since it was a big ol hard packed dirt road. Glad I learned my lesson on the XT250! I was out of work for three weeks, lost more money being injured that what I paid for the boots...decided to take the hit and get the better protection. Worth it in the long run. Appreciate you watching!
I have never even really thought about good boots, street or dirt in my 55 years of riding, luckily injury just never happened, I always wore some kind of boot but my friend had his klr650 fall on him in a very low speed tip over, pretty much stopped and rolling backwards, went to put his foot down and the ground was too low and he crushed his ankle, many surgeries later couldn't walk for months and hasn't ridden in a year. I went riding a couple weeks after that and same thing, dr 650 and stock tires, front end kicked out and I was down, no chance at saving it, trapped and bike on the ankle but nothing was broken thank goodness but it hurt and thought for sure it was broken! Got A* tech 7s and new tires. Getting old sucks. (14:20 If you turn on closed captions when you say "Sedicis". it interprets it as "City Cheese"🤣🤣
I was going to get the Tech 7s but went all in and got the SG12s since I would have wound up there anyway. Sorry to hear about your amigo, that's rough. You're lucky you didn't end up the same! My crash would have had a very different outcome if I had been on my KLR650. Yeah, I meant to say Sidi Crossfires but wound up with Sedici...city cheese sounds better! The Gaerne sound just as squeaky as my Leatt 6.5s. I'm like you and have a row of boots sitting in the garage showing the progression through different boots. Finally ended up with the Leatt 6.5s after they had a sale last year for $200 on them. Figured since they were returnable I'd give them a shot. Definitely the most protective boot I've ever owned and it took walking around in the house with them for about 8 hours in total before they were comfortable. The ankle especially took some time to break in. They're pretty darn comfortable, although heavy, to walk around in. But holy cow are they squeaky. I'm not sneaking up on Bigfoot with those things on :).

Living here in low-budget land, I got the sedici waterproof adventure boots.
They run small, so I was lucky to find a size that fit as they don't make women's sizes.

I hear ya. My wife had a hard time finding boots and was able to get the Thors which actually do a pretty good job for their hundred dollar price tag. I just went ahead and got the misery of purchasing the Gaernes over with since I was ultimately heading in that direction anyway, that one stung.
Thanks for the detailed review and comparison. One thing I can't find about the SG12's having looked at countless videos is what they are like to walk in. As adv riders we were our boots off the bike too so wondering how difficult it its to just walk around camp in them? I know you can't have your cake and eat it I'm just keen to step up from my Revit Discovery Adv's to something with more protection but have to weigh up the off road capabilites ass well as the on road/gravel etc. Thanks.
After break in I'm able to get around just fine in my SG12s. Very squeaky, wont be sneaking up on anyone but they are perfectly fine to walk around in. One thing to bear in mind (for me anyway) is that the steel toe plate can cause you to slip...other than that, no problems.
I feel like your wife's boots would probably suit me best, I'm missing all the toes on my left foot and half of my right foot. I need a super rigid lower mixed with a flexible upper, I have super sensitive spots on both feet and need to make small adjustments. Most of my riding will be on mostly hard dirt with some pavement and a little serious trail stuff. Totally new to this, still learning on my new XT250 and definitely on a budget as far as gear goes. Love your videos man, they've been a huge help with tips for my new experience with this whole world of dual riding, and riding in general!

Appreciate you watching! I like Fox Racing Cool Max socks. Kim makes a great thick sock for the winter but it falls a little short with boots.

I wear Alpinstar Toucan with Marino wool socks (high rise). Those boots are awesome 👌 BTW. $500 worth it.
New rider, 70 yrs old, KLR 650. Bought my first boots, SIDI Crossfire 3. My first thought after wearing them around the house, are they overkill? Guess I’ll find out.
I got into a crash back in the spring while riding my XT250 (bike weighs 290 lbs), broke my ribs and my left foot was crushed. I was wearing typical ADV boots...Alpinestars Corozal Drystar boots. Had I been riding my KLR650 (bike weighs close to 500 lbs) and experienced the same crash while wearing those same boots, I might have had a severed foot due to the lack of crush protection on the top of the boot. I'll take overkill on a boot all day now.
Jen needs some Gaerne's and I wonder if Gaerne Fastback Endurance/Enduro measures up to the G12's protection? They have a bit more of an adventure-centric sole and can be found on sale right now...

No, not yet. Still got plenty of life in my SG12s. The SG12s have saved my bacon more than once!
Bought same brand, but lower end : the G React, still have trouble shifting and brake feel , I do light enduro, I find too stiff for my taste even unbuckeled, love the protection, but feel like a beginner when shifting?
After a year of owning the Sg-12s I still have trouble shifting at times but it's totally worth the protection. Those boots have saved my bacon a couple times now, well worth the stiffness and money!
