Shane Burcaw (he/him) is the author of several award-winning books about disability. He is the President of a nonprofit organization called Laughing At My Nightmare, and a renowned public speaker who has performed across the country at places such as Harvard University, The University of Florida, The University of Connecticut, Princeton University, and many more.
Hannah Burcaw (she/her) graduated from Carleton College, where she studied Sociology and Anthropology. She films and edits the “Squirmy and Grubs” vlog, which has over 730,000 subscribers on TH-cam. Hannah has spoken at prestigious universities and Fortune 500 companies alike about the realities of ableism. On her popular Instagram account, she advocates for acceptance of all people and works to improve the way society thinks about disability.
Shane and Hannah have been together for over four years. They got married in September of 2020 in the midst of a global pandemic in their backyard, with their officiant conducting the ceremony via Zoom. Their interabled relationship often confuses people, because much of society still cannot fathom people with disabilities being involved in loving, intimate relationships. Anyone who watches these episodes will quickly see their relationship is just as “normal” as any other. Sure, Hannah helps Shane use the bathroom and brush his teeth, but those activities do not detract from the emotional, intellectual, and physical connection they experience together.
The way Hannah helps Shane to communicate comes so naturally to her 🥺 The way she always knows the right time to lift his head back up and the hand gestures she uses to demonstrate what had happened to his leg. Now that’s what I call a TEAM! ❤️
I love how Hannah helps Shane move his head forward every time he moves his head back without thinking. If that’s not true love, I don’t know what is. 😍😭

Shane’s description of flying out of his chair made me laugh so hard!! His storytelling is amazing! I’m so sorry for your pain.😞 ps, that’s why you call an ambulance, so they can stabilize an injury prior to moving you, thus preventing further injury.

I broke my femur last year after being knocked over by my horse when he spooked. The pain was excruciating. When the ambulance came and the paramedics lifted me I thought the bone was going through my thigh. I know exactly what you went through. You have my sympathy. Elaine (I write under my husbands name) u months later I am still in pain, but walking. I learned the frustration of being wheelchair bound.

So I showed them, and they started singing it more than I. They fell in love with these two amazing people, as I did.
One of my teenage boys is Special Needs, as we call it (maybe I'm wrong) But, he is our special angel. I'm thankful for all of my kiddos and thankful for the loving brothers they are to him as well. I am truly Blessed. I'm so happy I found this channel as well; It gives me hope in my son finding someone as special as Hannah. I adore them Both!❣

I cringed through the part of the story where the gym teacher lifted Shane! My stomach did a few flip flops just picturing the pain. Thank God for morphine once you got to hospital. I just found your videos today. It happened by accident but I'm glad it happened. I've binge watched about 20 videos today. I really appreciated experience of seeing things in a different perspective. It's important for society to hear details about disabilities of all sorts. It's not common for the disabled to share the intimate parts of their lives. It's not necessary for people to know the details but it was very educational to hear how ever works. Someday in the future if I ever have to care for someone in the same or different situation I can definitely go back in my mind and remember what you two have said. Thank you to both of you for being the incredible couple you are. I'll look forward to watching more of your videos.
I used to use “Freshly” and let me tell you switching to “Hello fresh” was the best decision ever... I am someone who loves food with flavor. Hello fresh isn’t bland at all and I had about 11 meals now... I am picky!... and every meal I liked there was not one I did not like... I will continue to use them! Thank you guys for recommending!!!
Okay now im convinced me and shane are the same person. My right femur is shorter (which happened in 11th grade), i ran over a ball with my chair and fell out which scratched up my whole face, once had two full leg casts and couldnt get out of bed, which then tutors came over and made me do work. I wish i wasa kidding, but this is crazyyyy lmaooo
