HI SHANE AND HANNAH! I'm a physical therapist. I LOVE that you guys are doing this! Please keep doing it. It would make me feel SO much better if you guys did this everyday, at least 3 minutes with each stretch. If not every day, most days of the week. With regular consistency, it will save A LOT of trouble in the future. I also advocate for regular physical therapy with a professional as well. It's so important to take care of your body Shane so that as you get older you'll have less pain and greater function.

I can't believe people see this as sacrifice. Honestly that's more intimacy than anything else - knowing your partners body and needs, then tending to them. That's love.

Absolutely. What is one of the vows? "for better or worse"? I would NOT call this worse, but perhaps not considered "normal". She has genuine, true, innocent love for him...rare.

    Get the patient comfortable: good.
    Gentle, slow, long stretches: good.
Putting pressure on the origin of the tendon to get it to 'relax' a little more: good. (Just more to the origin attachment point).
You already know it should be done more often; contractures can get worse over time.
    Two tips:
If you warm up with a hot bath or heat pack, you may get a tiny bit more range in the stretches and may experience less pain. (But that is a little difficult practically) .
Don't place your hands on the muscle belly (of wherever you're stretching); it causes it to contract as part of a protective reflex. So one can't stretch as far.
    OTs are happy:)
    Good job Hannah!
    Ignore any nay-sayers.

I don’t have the same issues as Shane, I have a completely different condition, but I have a plug in Dreamland intelliheat pad which definitely helps, and also with pain. Incase anyone else is reading this, this one is the best one I have found ♥️

  • @pesa9518

As an occupational therapist, I absolutely love this! I wish I can jump through the screen and join. My experience is in rehabs with ventilator units, with many patients who have contractions. It never gets less enjoyable or satisfying. Hanna, you have fantastic natural gut feelings about what to do. Shane, you're awesome at giving feedback. Some tips and tricks:
    - warming the muscles before is helpful. After a warm bath/shower would be a useful time. Another way is to move the joint open and closed, within the easily available range slowly and evenly (like to the timing of a slow, rhythmic song) for a bit. This helps warm up the muscles involved without stimulating them to contract further.
-If you order a 'goniometer' you can measure the joints and see if you're making progress from begining to the end of the stretch, as well as over time. This can be useful for your own satisfaction and practical feedback.
-Closer is easier on you both. Elbow, wrist: Hanna, if you sit close to Shane and hold his arm securely against your stomach, you will need to put less pressure for the same amount of stretch. Even having his elbow supported on your thigh can help.I don't work with the legs, so I can't speak from personal experience, but I'd imagine it's the same concept.
    - Shoulder: it's ok to move it, just avoid stretching past 90 degrees up (arm parallel to floor if sitting) if it's tight at that point, because that's when the scapula (bone in the back) gets involved and would need to be stretched together with the arm.
Love you guys and I'm sorry if that was unwanted!

I strongly believe in massage therapy. Unfortunately I can’t afford to get it regularly, but it helps me so much with my EDS. My muscles work so hard to hold the joints that my whole body is just a huge knot. Insurance companies need to start covering alternative therapies like massage, acupuncture, cannabis. They help as much as the medical appointments they do pay for.

Until he got sciatica and was trapped in his bed for two weeks in abject agony. He changed his tune then... There but for the grace of deity and all that. Now he doesn’t pick on me anymore. Until you can walk a mile in others shoes, it’s none of your business how he approaches his PT.

I literally just woke up and had to post this, otherwise I'd probably forget lol. I must woke up from a dream where I met you both in doctors office as I was pregnant and we trying to figure out how to social distance in the waiting room. Shane (in my dream) squeezed passed me to get somewhere and considered that since he had done that already we safe to sit next to each other on the only waiting area chairs. Hannah was more hesitant, but before she about to relent, the obgyn called you guys for your appointment. I remembered thinking) in my dream) that I had been waiting much longer that as nice you were, and how funny Shane's jokes about us no longer needing to social distance because he had 15 seconds (max!) squeezing past me were hilarious. I remember thinking "Gee it must because they are TH-cam stars they were seen by a TH-cam doctor (remember dream still!).
I haven't even watched this video yet because I've so busy with work (essential health care worker). But needed to get this out before I forgot it!!! BTW, I'm not even pregnant!!!

    From a bossy PT (lol)
You need some splintssssss! And to actually wear them lol.
Yes to shoulder ROM as tolerated! Consider some dynamic knee extension splints just to prevent further contractures.
Add some prolonged ankle stretches with the knee bent.
Add some hip adductor stretches where you bend the knees and let the knees rest out :).
Ps. You guys are hilarious to me and I watch all your videos!

I was wondering about abduction stretches too, he clearly can adduct well! Haha. Referring to his fancy pose. It does look like they have a pretty good routine but abduction seemed to be the only thing missing. I’m just a massage therapist tho.

B Yml I hope you aren’t offended, but your job is literally my biggest personal phobia. I have cerebral palsy and a hip dislocation.I also suffer from spasms whenever my knees are pushed to bend in anyway other than gravitationally assisted. Also my feet are big spasm triggers. My abductors (sp?) were lengthened as a kid. The physiotherapist ignored doctors orders and bent my legs too quickly. It really screwed with my surgery.
As a result my biggest fear is trying to stand and my knees spasming and locking bent. (I’ve actually been off my feet for a decade now) Nobody can touch me when that happens. It’s agony and it turns me into a crying, panicking screaming wreck. I will need to relearn to stand, once I have a hip replacement done. fear that physio will cause these vile spasms, is the main reason I’m delaying getting it done. I’m heavily medicated for my spasms with baclofen, gabapentin and Tramadol. Is there any advice you can offer as regards dealing with this phobia? Should I try hypnosis or try Botox for the actual spasms? Any advice or ideas? any other Physios reading this are welcome to chime in too. Oh, I’m a 45 yr old female.

I found your channel by looking up this disorder and sex and dating as it's been an ongoing conversation with my patient. I've learned so much about living daily life from your channel and I go back and encourage my patient that a real relationship is possible but that he has to put himself out there and see beyond his disability. He gets very depressed. I have to do similar exercises and wrist are like Shanes from not wearing his splints also. I tell him he should subscribe to see that a normal life is possible.

As a nurse I had a young wheelchair spinal injury patient who was contracted in his chair. They started him on a baclofen pill and later switched to a implanted pump. Was amazing how well that medication worked. Was designed for spinal patients with contractions. When he would be late on getting his pump filled you could see the difference immediately once it was restarted. His joints would just straighten out.

(Disclaimer: I am not a physical therapist) however, I would sit with my grandma in the pool and do range of motion exercises with her, to help with her severe arthritis.
I have also done water aerobics, with ankle and wrist weights, weighted balls, etc.
I never, ever had sore muscles after the water aerobics! The water made it far less aggressive and eased "impact".
My grandma benefited so much from the water stretching/"pt"- without causing additional pain or swelling.
I was able to strengthen muscles, loose weight, increase my range of motion. (Broken back, no paralysis- just pain and constant aching/sore back muscles) without any soreness, or pain afterwards.
You should look into doing the exercises/stretching in a pool- even a YMCA membership. Plus, Hannah is already a pro in the water, and you both love being in the water... Just a thought!
As I always say- you 2 are the best, and make me laugh so much! Love your videos!
