    The presenter has a remarkable ability to explain complex aviation topics to non-experts. His presentations
    make me wish I could book flights where he is captain. This also makes me wonder whether the general
    public can find out the safety records of individual pilots before taking a flight.

    The cockpit may have its usual 60s technology but with a bit of an upgrade to 80s to current technology with those screens. Sort of like in star trek to star trek tng tech. :)

      William Jones-Halibut - As far as i know it is not because of the screens, but to make room for the FMS keypad and screen. Initial 737-100/200’s did not have that luxury back in the days.

      The Boeing 737 Max's reputation is now badly damaged just like the Douglas DC10's in the 1970s when the DC10 suffered some serious / fatal accidents due to a combination of design flaws, technical problems, maintenance errors, and pilot errors.

      Tubmaster 5000 - I think that’s better than the other way around. You can’t control public opinion, put you can control the technical issues. When they start flying again, most people who have qualms will get over it.

      @GH-oi2jf 5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      supertrix101 - Despite it’s reputation, the DC-10 remained in service for many years after its early troubles. People flew on it - even those like me who didn’t like it, because it took us where we needed to go. I feel much better about the 737 Max than I did about the DC-10. The Max is an excellent aircraft which had one horrible defect. It’s been fixed and it’s time to move on, in my opinion.

      I personally would feel very safe on the Max when it comes back into service. After all the fixes and inspections by aviation experts the 737Max aircraft will probably be the safest aircraft in the sky. There is absolutely no way Boeing would allow one more of their aircraft to go down because they know they would never recover and all the airlines would take their business to Airbus. So I personally feel the 737max will be the safest aircraft in the sky, Boeing simply can not afford one more crash to happen or it's over for them. When the 737max comes back I will happily fly on one and I would feel safe putting my family on one.

    • @Acroposthion
      @Acroposthion 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Boeing’s 737 is only the *most successful and safest* jet aircraft series in history. But hey, you DO get a little more hip room on an A320....
      Media conjecture and hyperbole do not make for an unsafe aircraft!
      Operators pushing malfunctioning aircraft into continued service = problems.
      Operators pushing for minimalist ‘Difference Training,’ will inevitably get what they paid for.

      Flying an airplane is not like driving a car! Driving license is for life, pilot license has to be maintained, periodical checks are needed. New plane or new cockpit means new Type Rating, e.g training e.g. time and money. And nobody wants to spend money. For this reason looks MAX as older 737 to be flown with the same type rating. And also, aviation is quite conservative becase every screw, literally, has to be certified which costs again lot of money and time. New cars are made every 5 years, planes are in service for 30 years and 60.000 to 150.000 flight hours.

  • @Chris_at_Home

    This sure ain’t the same as a P3 Orion cockpit that I worked on as an avionics tech in the early 70s. I really enjoy your videos. I have flown on many different types of aircraft, fixed wing and rotary wing, traveling around Alaska for my job.

    Can you take the simulator for a quick spin around the block?

    • @jpaufsc
      @jpaufsc 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @mipmipmipmipmip Most of these simulators are actually built in Canada by CAE. Boeing really doesn't build simulators themselves. At least not for commercial applications.

    • @Chris-hf2sl
      @Chris-hf2sl 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      "Can you take the simulator for a quick spin around the block?" - Difficult. They've moved the indicator lever, so until Petter finds it, he won't be able to let other planes know when he's turning left or right.

    This aircraft has gone under more scrutiny than any other aircraft has. However, I completely understand why. The good news is now that the aircraft has been cleared to be put into service in the USA and Europe, it will be the safest aircraft in the sky bar none!

    • @2point7182818284590
      @2point7182818284590 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This aircraft doesn't even have an Engine Indicating and Crew Alerting System (EICAS) which is mandatory since years for new planes but got lobbied away somehow. No, this absolutely is not the safest plane and it definitely never will be as Boeing already made clear that they never ever will upgrade the 737 MAX cockpit to current safety standards.

    A note: the MOTORING segment of the CFM-LEAP startup is typically faster (a few seconds). The reason why the FADEC motors the engine longer in this case was because the engine was still hot from the previous shutdown (EGT initially shows 196 deg), and needs to cool down first to reduce the chance for a Hot Start

    She is a beauty and the best part is that she uses a yoke, not a joystick. That is much more ergonomic as far as using the left hand for landings for right handed pilots.

    • @iScoTT29
      @iScoTT29 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      What’s the point in the yoke if the heap of shit can’t fly. Lmao

    • @CB47SK
      @CB47SK 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@iScoTT29 it does fly naturally despite the change in characteristics due to the new engines. The fault in software during both crashes was allowed to persist all the time. There's a good reason why the trim cut out switches are installed even current gen 737s, and they were there since the 1950s if I'm absolutely correct else close to that era, and during that time trim faults and including jams were faced and the pilots then successfully handled the aircrafts with ease. Trim issues happen with many aircrafts even today due to other faults, just as any other common faults such as depressurization, flameouts, etc.
      You just can't judge a plane that's totally dangerous to fly just because you allow it to fly itself while the autopilot starts to pay roller coaster Progressively in clear skies. That's more of premature pilot error than the aircraft itself, if the mission was to save the passengers than to save the comfort for flying.
      Refer to late Captain Warren Vanderburgh's brilliant lectures and documentaries for further explanation. The pilots of his era were eating donuts while successfully man-handling jets with mechanically jammed controls.
      Honestly but with respect you can't conclude this in the way you just said about the aircraft. If it was that important to have perfectly immune aircrafts, then you wouldn't even step on any aircraft ever. It's just lil dirty games with huge impacts going on from what I see worldwide.

      @UC77VyAIczYqmhMDd8lc_maA That is my point. The captain uses the yoke to control pitch and yaw during the critical landing approach. It should be noted 90% of mankind are right handed and thus so are 90% of the pilots.

    You can totally see the conditions around the MAX's development reflected in the flight deck. Kind of, still 60's design up top, with some new tech jammed in, looks like it was designed in a hurry, and without a single coherent design philosophy. Which perhaps payed to why it ended up like this.

    • @GH-oi2jf
      @GH-oi2jf 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jack Perry - That’s completely wrong. A great deal of thought goes into flight deck layout. Boeing’s approach is conservative. Generally, they stick with what is familiar and what works well. When significant changes are made to the human interface, it is only after a long design process and for good reasons. Using screens for display is flexible whereas special-purpose indicators are not. The screens are probably also more reliable than the gauges.

    • @jack.p
      @jack.p 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GH-oi2jf The screens are more reliable. They are also more legible and cost efficient, being less prone to malfunctions than the old analogue counterparts. But if that is true then why keep the old switches up top? Why not overhaul the whole layout to fit the new modern safer philosophy? Probably because that would mean pilots had to undertake new massively expensive type ratings. Which is why I said the rushed and hasty release of the plane is reflected in the flight deck.

    • @ronjon7942
      @ronjon7942 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jack.p If Boeing were to make too many changes like that, then it becomes a difficult aircraft requiring a different type certificate, and pilots would have to get retrained to acquire the new type rating. Airlines don't want to pay for that kind of training, and wants pilots to be able to fly different 737 versions if needed without getting confused about where the new guy's buttons are now at. Airlines want their fleets to be as consistent as possible for this reason, and also for maintenance reasons, especially the parts supply chain. Who wants to buy parts to have on hand, only to have wasted money having to add additional stock and eventually toss the previous version's parts. Plus, training for the aircraft technicians has to be taken into account. Long story short, there are good reasons for the sameness. When Boeing builds a brand new aircraft model, the latest tech goes in them.

      That is such an uneducated comment to make, the cockpit is barely different they just made some simple easy changes to screens and other things etc so it’s not like it was jammed in because they were quite simple also it has nothing to do with the crashes, the reason the planes crashed was because the Mcas malfunctioned causing the plane to pitch down uncontrollably and the pilots were unaware that they could fix it by flicking the stab trim switches, the cockpit design does not come into any of that

    Very nice video nonetheless, still nowhere near as cool as the CS/A220 cockpit but a good refresh...just looking at the cockpit you wouldn't say it's a 60+ years old plane

      @@trenesdecolombiaPabloHiguita they've been changed in function. On the NG each one did a different part of cutting out electric stab trim control (one was for the autopilot side of thing, the other for the electric trim on the yoke). On the MAX now they both cutoff everything, and one is the primary and the other is just the backup.
      It's pretty crucial in the whole ET302 case if you've read the report

    A leading cause of death is being unable to handle the situation of newly exposed hidden edge cases within the uncompensated parameters that arise AS A RESULT OF TOGGLING AUTOPILOT ON OR OFF. (mostly, OFF)
    I.e. Air France 447 -- could have continued to fly _through the storm_ with AP ON and flight parameters resulting only from compensational feedback loop.

    • @zyxyuv1650
      @zyxyuv1650 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GVTSounds You're right about 447 *with an old aircraft only* but I am referring to the fix - i.e. flying a Boeing 828 with AP1, AP2, AP3, ((AP4)), RP1, ((RP2)) and AP3, AP4 have redboxed physical locality and flight sensors on isolated power, and AP3 cannot be disengaged unless Emergency is declared. If the plane is able to execute a disallowed procedure (while not in declared Emergency and before control by AP3 and RP1 or RP2 OR AT ANY TIME by RP2 and AP3 or AP4) without arresting the pilot, it means that the procedure was never specified to begin with.

    I flew Boeings and buses (a320 and 747s) and Boeing's cockpits always stood head and shoulders above airbuses. quality , design , feel and finish. Airbuses with their plastic covers and huge panel gaps always felt like some third grade cheapness. Its like comparing Bentley and Kia.

    My biggest concern is that when Boeing has already said ohh its totally safe!
    And then you are grounded indefinitely because there were actually something wrong with the plane!
    I’m sorry but I would never want to fly on a max8!
    It might be safe, but I don’t have any faith in Boeing!
    So yeah Boeing is going to be the textbook example of how not to handle PR emergencies.

    • @ACPilot
      @ACPilot 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Common Sense - How would you have handled it?

    • @commonsense31
      @commonsense31 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You Know I would have definitely been much more open about the issue, I wouldn’t have been so slow to address the issues.
      Secondly the instance regulators all around the world start grounding the plane, Boeing is in talks with regulators all around the world.
      They knew that the plane was going to be grounded days before it happened!
      They should have taken that decision that would have signaled that they take Safety as their number 1 priority.
      But no they kept saying it’s safe and safest plane along with The FAA.
      And then all the information came around Boeing self certification, and FAA actually didn’t do their job.
      And meanwhile all this is happening Boeing is still not addressing the extreme loss of trust in them, continuing business as usual.
      They didn’t probably hide anything but because of their behavior towards the problem it looks like they are hiding issues from the public!
      And just trying to make it all go away!
      There are multiple papers from experts and professors in marketing stating the exact same thing this is the thing NOT to do. And it will be taught as a worse case scenario in schools! on what not to do in a PR emergency.

    • @ACPilot
      @ACPilot 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Common Sense - You have to remember these crashes happened at airlines in parts of the world considered not the safest in the world. So a proper understanding of the problem was required before doing anything. Grounding aircraft is not done unless it is really neccessary. The regulators grounded the MAX due mostly due to public pressure and the media spreading wrong information and scare stories..
      The Airbus 330 that Air France crashed, technical malfunctioning probes and pilot error.. no media frency, no grounding.. almost as many killed..

    • @commonsense31
      @commonsense31 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ACPilot The Airbus 330 had 18,870 flying hours, at the time of the crash and was 4 years old.
      Lion Air Flight 610 was delivered 13 August 2018 and crashed 29 October 2018 with only 800 hours of flight time!
      Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 was delivered on delivered on 15 November 2018 and crashed On 10 March 2019 making it only 4 months old.
      We are talking about brand new airplanes that crashed because of the exact same reason.
      So your argument that because it happened in countries that aren't regarded as the safest in the world, is pretty arrogant considering this was Brand new planes.
      Your claim that it was public pressure and false information that caused the Grounding, is just plain ignorant when there keep coming information out that there are problems and they are fixing them.
      But this answer wasn't about the crashes but more about the absolute PR disaster that Boeing has landed them self in.
      A lot of the damage that has been done to Boeing is because of their handling of the entire situation.
