    This is so weird! I was reading an account of this case just yesterday. Monson was a horrible human being. He groomed Cecil with the intention of robbing him of his inheritance, and, when that didn't work, murdered him for his insurance money. How the jury found 'not proven ' is beyond me.

    How blind are people? Alfred is as guilty as the day is long. I think the prosecution case was solid. The defense one, not so much. This fiasco of a trial must have deeply hurt his parents, seeing that Alfred got to live his life, while Cecil didn't?
    Great narration as usual BC.

    • @jbaker7311

      This case is truly baffling. For the life of me I cannot understand why he wasn't convicted. It makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

    • @Ashannon888
      @Ashannon888 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Because it happened before forensics were really developed and they defense was able to introduce enough doubt. That's enough. The fact they did the Not Proven verdict tells you everything. "We think you did it, but we can't prove it beyond a shadow of a doubt"

    • @TheUluxian
      @TheUluxian ปีที่แล้ว +5

      But the defense didn't have to prove that Alfred wasn't guilty. They just have to introduce doubt, which it seems their expert did.
      I also wonder how much the fact that forensics, being a relatively new science at the time, prosecutors were not able to present the evidence without confusing the jurors. Remembering back to the early days of DNA evidence, it was a real struggle to get people to trust that evidence, or even explain it in such a way as to make it clear to the layman.
      Confused jurors = jurors that have doubts, and will vote to acquit.

    • @FinnishLapphund
      @FinnishLapphund ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I think the defence lawyer had his peak performance at work, being able to make jurors think that maybe the man who couldn't swim drilled a hole in the boat he was about to use, and not the man with money problem, who could swim, had recently taken out 2 life insurances on the non swimmer, and who relatively quickly tried to cash in those 2 life insurances after the young man's "accidental" death shooting, which conveniently happened the day after the boat "accidentally" sunk.

    Interesting turn of events. Refreshing to see a story about several handsome young men, instead of the usual female-intensive tale. Poor Cecil...he didn't really receive justice, but then as now, the guilty sometimes work the system to their advantage. Personally, I like these historic 19th century (and earlier) cases best. I often think how the trials would have been different now, but even these days, trials can be filled with errors.
    I think the affair was motive, and possibly either the wife or Cecil mentioned that he was going to go elsewhere after he turned 21. This meant Alfred couldn't live off of Cecil's inheritance, so Alfred decided to get whatever he could from Cecil. Poor Cecil. I can only hope Alfred's life was filled with poverty and misery. Thanks for another great video!

    It really surprised me that Mr Monson & Scott actually thought that their outlandishly stupid account of what happened would be believedby anyone with intelligence 😮. However, more surprising was the Dr. who ruled it an "accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound"!!! Oh well. This was a sad case perpetrated by greed. Thanks BC! Cheers 🍻!

    The way Monson got around the insurance age requirement (he had attempted to open multiple policies previously on the pretext he was owed back wages, this didn't work) is by claiming Cecil intended to buy Ardlamont and that Monson's wife had made a £20,000 down payment on it, so if Cecil died before he reached majority the Monsons wouldn't be out of their money.

    Another great video! I’m always waiting with impatience for the next one :) If I may, I only have one small criticism to make 😅. Could you improve on the audio quality? It seems your voice is “echoing” or being recorded in a very small room. That’s a shame as all your videos are beautifully edited. Thank you!

    Wow! How unfortunate for Cecil. Imagine back then, there wasn’t a number of murders that were taken to court. No one ever thought someone would do something like that. Now it’s almost normal to hear about this kind of case. His attorney was pretty clever. I can see where some of the money went. I wonder how much it cost. B.C. I was flued out. I watched it but had to rewatch it because I kept drifting off…lol. I so love you and honestly, you’re the best there is.

    The level of research and detail you put into the cases you cover is incredible! This was a fascinating story the level of forensic detail explained at the trial is remarkable for that time period. Thank you Brief Case👏👏😀

    I've always found this case interesting because the exact same courtroom "battle of the forensic experts" still goes on over a century later. Monson had an excellent barrister defending him, who was astute enough to know which evidence could be challenged to create reasonable doubt... forensics can be a double-edged sword for the prosecution ("if the glove doesn't fit, you must acquit"), and the presence of birdshot on a hunting estate & long grass hiding bloodstains are counterpoints we'd see in court today. That said, there's plenty of _other_ evidence for Monson's guilt (a "self-inflicted" shotgun blast to the back of the head? Making an insurance claim days later? Puh-lease!) so the "not proven" verdict is still a bit puzzling, but understandable given the newness of forensic analysis. Great video! 👍

    Great story as always BC. How could someone shoot themselves in in the back of the head!? Also, surely if it was somehow possible, the whole head would have been obliterated, particularly with a shotgun! That Doctor made a bad call there. Has to be said his defense team really earned their fee. Must be remembered that the jury would(probably) not all have been highly educated & been overwhelmed by the conflicting evidence & probably in awe of the so called "experts". So Not Proven was probably inevitable.... Guilty as charged, in my opinion.

    I can see why Conan Doyle would be interested in this case because of data and reasoning, for instance, reasons why he could NOT have shot himself. And of course knowledge of human nature, such that a person a few months away from an inheritance is not likely to commit suicide. Great video!

    😂. To which medical school did the doctor go? I am no doctor but I am quite certain a gunshot to the BACK of the head is no accident.

      I knew someone who died with an ax to the back of the head, and it was ruled self-inflicted, accidental.

      A town I used to live in had the same kind of idiots. A man was killed and it was ruled suicide. He had been shot with a shot gun which was 100 yards away and on the other side of the fence from where the man was.

    Good morning!
    This case wasn’t as complicated as it seemed. I clearly believe this young man was murdered because of money but that’s just my opinion.
    The red flag of course was the insurance and the fact that the damage to the skull what is what really captured my attention. Plus the fact that Cecil had a different bullet in his pocket then I believe the one that was fired into the back of his ear?
    Unfortunately forensics wasn’t as sophisticated as it is now. I feel there was no justice for this young man and that’s a sad part he was only 20 years old and I believe he was easily manipulated. Enjoy the rest of your week and looking forward to next Monday
    Bless 🙏🏽🇬🇧

    So...he was found that they couldn’t prove the attempted murder case from the day before but also for Cecil’s murder the following day? I don’t know how someone shoots themself in the back, but I’m certain Cecil didn’t do it! What a sad case
