  • On January 2, 1987, Penn State played the Miami Hurricanes at the Fiesta Bowl for the National Championship. # 1 ranked Miami against #2 ranked Penn State. It was a much talked about game prior to kick off featuring the "good guys" from Penn State vs. the "bad boys" from Miami.
The Hurricanes had a line up that would make the NFL jealous and was led by All-American, Heisman Trophy and Maxwell Award winner, Vinny Testaverde. The Miami offense averaged 38 points per game and the defense only allowed 12 points. However, it was Penn State's defense that won the day. Shane Conlan said, "Our little, slow guys back there just rocked 'em, and soon they didn't want to catch the ball." The Nittany Lions forced 5 interceptions with the final one, by Pete Giftopoulos, securing the 14-10 win against Miami.
Penn State won their 2nd National Championship in 5 seasons and ended a perfect season.

Vinnie threw his helmet when he got to the Miami locker room and, yep, it was picked off! Fabulous game. Rooted for PSU but also for Vinnie in the Pros

The only time that I can remember the vaunted Miami passing game slowed or shut down in that era.

Jimmy Johnson looked like he needed a 10 ton Xanax. Joe was as cool as could be.

He's said repeatedly this was the most painful loss of his career.

Sign of things to come in the NFL. Not that Vinny wouldn't eventually mold himself into a somewhat decent QB with a handful of goof seasons, but he was always prone to the bad INT. I mean 0:40 come on what are you looking at!? And his final INT he threw it to an area where there were 4 Nittany Lions and 1 Hurricane

George Paterno was the best at football analysis. He could do radio or TV.
