At least he got the part that we don’t have free markets in the us right, although I’m sure the reasons behind why he said that where also completely incorrect, and he thinks free enterprise is when there are countless regulations limiting the choice of the people, while subsidizing businesses that fail to provide value to people through literal forced charity.

      @Clark Hull I am all for Black Lives Matter and have joined some marches. I have experienced inequality in this country as a Mexican. But Reparations are objectively bad. It would take a huge amount of money to do, which will end up coming out of the Tax payers' pockets. Also, what would be the criteria for who receives these reparations? Anyone who is African American? What about the millions of Black people who are not of African America descent? This will cause a divided in the Black community. If it goes to anyone who is black skinned, that defeats the whole purpose of Reparations, which is meant for descendants of slaves. Not every black person in America has roots in slavery. It is also unequal and unjust to pay someone for the color of their skin. Just take a look at the BEE in South Africa. It was created with the goal of helping Black South Africans, but many view it as racist as it is giving an advantage to people solely based on the color of their skin. I believe we need to focus on helping the poor in the US, which includes people of all races and ethnicities who are given an unequal shot in life due to their social/economic class standing. Yes, there still exists a huge racial problem in America, but that can not be solved by giving people money. Actual change and restructure of American society is needed.

    • @willh483
      @willh483 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @Clark Hull Remind me again what's Biden's policy on reparations? If being against reparations makes you look racist, then why did the majority of African Americans vote for him? Not only that, he has actively supported policies that were actually racist and caused great harm to the African American community.
      Bernie was the only candidate who even substantively addressed the idea of reparations. We both know you are simply being disingenuous. So try again.

      @gothatway09 Hang on a minute now. Ask yourself how many of these "clueless Millennials" stories you have from firsthand experience versus second-hand. I'm not calling anyone here a liar; all I know is I'm 45, I've known literally countless Millennials and Gen Z's in the past couple decades (as a high school teacher and parent of a teenager with friends), and I've had very, very few of these encounters with any of them not knowing of these old technologies and pop culture figures. And the few I have encountered, the question is whose fault is it? --Theirs or the adults who raised them? For example I have definitely met kids who don't know how to read an analog clock. Now, yes we also had digital clocks (even wristwatches) in the 70's and 80's, but they weren't as ubiquitous as they are now, and so I guess some parents (and schools) see no need to teach analog reading of clocks. I made sure to teach mine but at 13 I can see that she still has to do some "counting" rather than know at a glance what time it is. Why? Because we have only one analog clock in the house; all the rest are digital, so the only time she has to read the analog is when she's in that one space in the house. Another complaint I hear is about cursive writing. Mine actually WAS taught it in school and I think lots of schools still teach it, but to be honest I can't think of any reasons kids would need it other than to sign their names. If I'm truly sad about the loss of any kind of education, it would be CIVICS, HOME ECONOMICS, AND SHOP classes. Some schools still teach some of these, to some extent, but the pressure to excel in reading and math push everything else to near nothing. And that's definitely not the kids' faults. Also, the stuff THEY know how to do on computers embarrasses me all the time.

      VT used to be super conservative but it had a different meaning back then. It was pretty much entirely fiscal which makes sense because it was one of the poorest states at the time

    • @David-fm6go
      @David-fm6go 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      @@Somebody-lk7dm It is more accurate to say that the Vermont was super Republican. Within the Vermont Republican Party, there was conservative and liberal/progressive factions. Through the 1940s, the former had the upper hand, but after 1958, it was typically the latter that dominated politics in the state.
      This was a transformation that happened across rural ancestrally Republican areas of Yankee puritan ancestry in the mid twentieth century. Kevin Phillips talks about this transformation in his book Emerging Republican Majority. Sure you had liberal and progressive Republicans prior to the 1960s, but they were mostly in the urban areas or in the days of TR, out west. Rural Republicans in Yankee ancestral districts, tended to be very conservative as did the posh urban WASP areas of the major cities and they tended to elect conservative Republicans (old right Bob Taft conservatism in the more rural areas, of which isolationism was a part). There was a leftward cultural shift in these areas after WWII, and the Republican Representatives either shifted left or were replaced by more liberal Republicans in the late 1950s. The Western Southern tier of NY had a very conservative Representative named Dan Reed (he supported poll taxes, that is how conservative he was). He was succeeded by a liberal Republican in 1959, Charles Goodell. The UES of Manhattan, had a moderately conservative Representative named Frederick Courdert, he was replaced by liberal Republican John Lindsay in 1959. Phillips talks about how Representatives in rural districts of this demographic profile, moved heavily leftward in their voting patterns in Congress between 1965-1969, while Republicans outside of these kinds of district moved in the opposite direction. The former group tended to back Rockefeller in 1968, while the latter group heavily supported Richard Nixon.
      The turning point for many of these districts was the 1964 election. While these demographics had been moving to the left over time with generational change post WWII, the nomination of Goldwater was the shock to the system that forever broke the link between Republicans and Yankee (New England) ancestry. Once you have such a voting shock to a demographic, even if the next nominee does better, it is generally never the same (2016 and college educated whites). Because LBJ did so well in these districts, the incumbents felt the pull to the left to try and stay afloat in what was becoming increasingly hostile terrain.
      In Vermont specifically, Democrats broke through in a big way in 1958 and this was the last gasp of the conservative faction (typically led by the Proctor family) in Vermont. 1964 was just icing on the cake and while Republicans held the state in every election from 1968 to 1988, the state was trending rapidly towards the Democrats relative to the national average. In 1988, even though HW won VT, it was by less than the national average. Had there been a close election in the 1980s, VT would have flipped earlier than 1992, but the GOP landslides masked Vermont's rapid leftward trend.
      This was a multi-faceted process. The shift of rural Yankees to left culturally after WWII, that I mentioned above and the pull factor it had on incumbents. The construction of the highway system, which led to a lot of liberals and lefties from NYC relocating to Vermont (Its population exploded in the mid 20th century) was also a factor. Also the decline of the old right that was culturally northern (and defined by isolationism, nativism and protectionism, all very popular in Vermont), and the rise of the New Right that was culturally southern and western (and defined by a hawkish foreign policy, the religious right and economic neoliberalism, especially on trade).
      Even so, Kevin Phillips did not expect rural areas in the Northeast to abandon the GOP and he expected that as the Democrats came to be dominated by the urban megalopolis of the Acela corridor, the rural areas would tend to cling to the Republicans. Phillips did not anticipate the rise of the religious right and its devastating impact on the GOP in culturally liberal rural areas that would otherwise favor the Republicans. This is why Vermont went so far left in the 1990s and 2000s. The Iraq war also did not help matters in the region either.

    • @aaronTGP_3756
      @aaronTGP_3756 4 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      Vermont used to be a Republican stronghold. From 1854 to 1962, there were only Republican governors; Democrats only gained control over any legislative chamber for the first time in 1985. Presidentially, Democrats never won Vermont until 1964, and only started to get it consistently in 1992.

    Being Norwegian, living in a society Bernie tries to advocate in the U.S, I can only say I feel very lucky to be born in Norway. Im conservative on many things, but I would never want to abolish social democratic values and systems in Norway, never. I pay my taxes and want that money to help my fellow citizens, so when I go out my door I feel safe, and good because I am part of a society and I am contributing to it and when/if I get ill, or lose my job, the very same society helps me back on my feet again. Socialism=Teamwork.
    Not helping your fellow citizens might be good for your wallet right there and then, but it's short sighted, because poverty and economic divide creates social divides, which again creates social problems and crime. So you, if youre the lucky one, have to live in a walled palace, afraid of everyone outside. So I get why Americans want their guns, while I dont ever need one in Norway.

      @filipefernandes870 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@humushumus2219 im not being smug, amd yes thats true, but then you're basing that on a future where those parties win every election? In a working democracy, which we have, different parties and ideas win sometimes. The neoliberals as you call them are voted into office for many reasons but not to remove our social security, so if they propose anything like removing universal health care they will lose the next election with absolute certainty. They bring good ideas too, but the moment a party pushes the boundaries too far people will react and choose differently.
      Also, AP, SP, SV, MDG and R are not going to remove universal health care and create an American system. Thats your opinion maybe, but back those claims up with facts.

What happens when you increase work supply and force companies to pay higher? They fire employees and society will be left with a huge amount of unemployed people that are a liability to society and safety. It will also increase corruption as the incentive for social dumping and engaging in the black market will be more profitable.
      The public sector would also grow dramatically, and as continuously more people grow dependent it will snowball into a dysfunctional size where again corruption becomes more destructive due too government power over individuals increasing.

      At that time being a capitalist was more or less considered to be the opposite of a communist. The word capitalist was used to distinguish oneself from the Soviet Union. We're capitalist, they're communist, we're democratic, they're authoritarian. Also, capitalism, which was basically synonymous with the free market, was evidently a better economic system than communism, because all new technology and science came from the Western world, and the Western world was much richer, to be a capitalist was simply a no-brainer. So an elected official claiming not to be a capitalist was kind of novel, and still kind of is, although less so than back then, that's why the question was asked.

      the tax breaks are already put into the tax code, you can't NOT use them as you would be breaking the law.
      even after all that hes still trying to raise taxes on himself. if you can't see the importance of that then there is something mentally WRONG with you.
      i wonder whos more trust worthy some guy that was already a billionaire cutting taxes for himself and his friends or some guy who's just barely hit the millionaire mark at the young young age of 77 still pushing for higher taxes on the wealthy which includes himself. who do you think is the selfish one is?

    • @rocksfire4390
      @rocksfire4390 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @MegaStick93
      tax "break" is really just tax code. again you cannot pay less or more simply because you want to, you have to follow the law.
      just barely a millionaire is just that, a millionaire that's just hanging on by a sliver. you can't even understand that? yes there is something mentally wrong with you.
      "As far as trustworthy, how can someone be considered even remotely trustworthy when they move the bar for themselves as they acquire more wealth?"
      he didn't move the bar, the bar has stayed in the same place it has for DECADES. none of his polices has changed. he even pointed this out during the fox town hall, how about you watch that. instead of listening to who ever you are listening to, they are telling you nothing but lies. how about you LISTEN to Bernie instead of taking other what others say as fact.
      "When ol bern preached against the 2% it was his stance, when he became a part of the 2% it became the 1%, when tax breaks were passed, he didn't hesitate to take advantage of it for himself, he could have paid the old higher rate, but he didn't, because HE benefitted from it. "
      it's always been the top 1% with Bernie, or "top earners". top 1% is 2,700,000$ EARNINGS a year, it's not about how much money you have, it's about your yearly income. Bernie's WORTH is 1 million, not his YEARLY INCOME. get that shit through your thick fucking skull, the person who keeps feeding you lies, most likely makes several times what Bernie has in worth in a year.
      "He could donate profits of his book and a portion of his LARGE salary to the very people he claims to care so much about, but he doesn't, because accumulation of wealth benefits HIM.'
      you say that, but then you have people who actually make 120 MILLION dollars a year, giving zero dollars away. how about you go cry to them about it. here you are CRYING about 1,000,000 dollars in net worth he has finally gotten to in his 77 years of living, yet you wont ever complain about the people who make 120,000,00 million a YEAR EVERY FUCKING YEAR. please just shut the fuck up, you do need help. there is something wrong with your brain, it's like you can't see reality anymore.
      "Yea, I'm the one that has something mentally wrong because I'm not in denial and blindly following like a good little lemming."
      again who is the moral one here, the person who after 77 years hit 1 million in net worth, or the person who claims to have BILLIONS, creating tax breaks for himself?
      why do you never bring that up? the person who did the tax breaks? why do you think it's Bernie's fault? it's the law, how about you blame the person who CREATED the tax breaks. how about you attack and defame the people who RAISED taxed on EVERYONE else to pay for their needless tax breaks?
      there is something wrong with you, how you can blame the only person trying to help and then protect your abusers. it's sick, maybe someday you will see just how terribly wrong you are. although i think your prideful disgrace you have shown will get in the way of that progress. i hope you get help, you really do need it. stop supporting the people who keep taking everything away from you. stop attacking the weak and powerless. stop punching down, and PUNCH UP.

More people had access to food, water and electricity now, and the country also saw many foreign investors flooding into the country because of the new business openings created by a lot of existing private companies in Venezuela being operated under the Government. His policies allowed smaller businesses to rise up and compete with bigger companies since the monopolies were all being nationalised. So the lack of bigger sharks made prosperity possible for the smaller companies. Starvation and blacklisting started under Maduro, not Chavez. Many of the politicians elected in under the Chavista Government opposed the election of Maduro.
      Private companies still existed under Chavez's Government, but he made sure that electricity, water and other ammenities were available even to poor people who might not possess the means to gain access to paid services and products. Anyone with even the slightest knowledge of the 20th century could see where this was headed.
