i remember as a kid in the UK i had a little book from the library saying how to get free things; one suggestion was writing to embassies around the world (no email then) so i did - only Lebanon responded , they sent me a flag and a book. Always had a soft spot for Lebanon since ;) ps fun fact, Al Murray is tee total, the beer is non alcohol
First time seeing your channel, and can i say you did really well understanding his accent.
They understand better than YT subtitles do, that's for sure.
He's got a PhD in history so when he jokes about historical facts he actually knows what he's talking about which makes his banter even funnier.
He did a sitcom for Sky Television years ago which he's uploaded to his TH-cam channel - it's called Time Gentlemen Please and it's set in a pub near the top end of Ladbroke Road which I often used to go past on my way to work... Phil Daniels, Julia Sawalha and Rebecca Front are also in it and it's well worth a look.

As part of his shows he always gets to know the people in the front rows, their names ("beautiful British name") and what they do. He then comes back to them later in the show, hence the bit with "Steve", who is a music teacher, and the national anthem.

I could watch this couple all day. I have no idea of their nationality, but their understanding and comprehension of the English language is fantastic. To watch a programme in a foreign language, and be aware of all it`s nuances is something that is a joy to me. The BIG bonus is that they are two really good looking people and that makes it so easy to watch, and appreciate the clips that they present for our entertainment. keep them coming....PLEASE
I do enjoy this couples reaction to one of our best loved comedians, but I did smile when watching their musical background behind them and taking for granted they both looked like professional musicians/singer , and then at 4:00 it became apparent they are not musical🥰.

Love your reaction i expect with his accent you have to listen really well as its difficult. British humour is one of putting ourselves down so when he does this to another Country it will be friendly with no malice. If we joke about you it is because we like you. Al Murray is a serious Historian having degree from Oxford University. If you enter Al Murray History on a search you will tind his History Videos. Al Murray plays the roll of the Pub Landlord. This why the beer and chatting to everyone as if they are patrons in his bar. Thats why in the last one when he was talking about Ireland the patato famine and haveing to turn to peanuts because you crisps (potato chips) to keep the people thirsty.

I'm glad to see you got the 'gag' about the Pub Landlord - some Americans don't & feel offended. Al does the whole act in character. In real life, he is of course, the total opposite of the landlord. He once did stand against right wing Nigel Farage as the pub landlord in a real election. There is a video called 'Making a mockery of democracy' in which Al, as himself, talks about the experience to students. He produced a series of spoof election podcasts for the landlord's 'Free UK Party' or 'FUKP'😄

His character, the pub landlord is making fun of a stereotypical kind of person in this country - Someone who is a little racist and prejudiced, very very proud of being british and think they know everything about everything, while really just being obnoxious and a bit dumb . So, when he's roasting other countries, part of the joke is we recognise the kind of person he's acting as, rather than he's just making fun of other people and places for the sake of it.
Al Murray is actually mocking the British. He is playing the role of a typical British Pub Landlord and the stereotype of the Pub Landlords.

I would highly highly recommend a modern British Comidean Romesh Ranganathan. He is the king of Dead Pan humour and his sketch live at the Apollo sums Up British humour. It's hilarious.

When AL says "it doesn't matter who comes first when your on your own" then shakes his hand, he is making a joke about masturbation, hence he says "it's been a year" implying a year since his wife walked out 🙂
The thing about Al, is he's a very clever, well educated man who is, here, *playing a character* - the Pub Landlord - and that character is primarily intended to laugh at the attitudes of the British, themselves.

Poor old Pub Landlord’s jokes are often only written for the British audience, and are full of subtle double meanings like the Paddington bear jokes in your last video ! You should perhaps watch His history of all the wars that Britain has won across the World ( not the best idea for humour you might think ) but he makes it hilarious with his huge knowledge of History and cruel satire. A very smart man, pretending to be a jingoistic, pompous pub landlord. There were a few things that I suspect skipped over your heads. It was not spilling beer that made him shake his hand - it was the line "it does not matter who comes first, when you are on your own", followed by a shake of the hand and "its been a year". - innuendo. The same with "period" - "full stop" for Americans but used to refer the menstrual cycle for the British. "Divided by a common language" indeed.

When I introduced my future husband to my dear departed father who had spent part of WWII in Nantes, France, I asked him if he spoke any French. His answer was : "Voulez-vous coucher avec moi?" and mentioned that going out with a girl, it happened very often that she stopped on the road and without any shame, bent down to "piss" (no public toilets).......
Alistair Murray is from an upper middle class family. His grandfather was an ambassador. He was public school educated and read History at Oxford. His persona on stage is a parody of a bigoted pub landlord so be is in effect making fun of aspects of Britishness as well as mocking everyone else which is typical British humour.

"Divided by a common language" is a quote usually attributed to George Bernard Shaw, a playwright and philosopher. It points to the fact that though both nations speak English, they use it slightly differently, which can lead to misunderstandings.
You really need to watch his explanation of world finance, classic stuff.
Well done guys, British humour can be difficult to follow especially given that Al Murray is a comedy character who says these things and not the comedian actually believes. Like with Borat you are laughing that someone can say such things as much as what they are saying.

American English differs from British English in many small ways, enough however to allow for loads of jokes. Al takes it to the next level .

I don't think you understood what he meant by we invented GRAVITY. He twisted the idea from DISCOVERED to INVENTED Isaac Newton in 1687 while writing under a tree a APPLE fell on his head and he wanted to know why through out his studies he realised what GRAVITY was. I think they absolutes did get it….along with nearly everything else. These guys are very switched on. Not just to a language that is not their first, but to what we might consider very ‘British’ humour. Incredibly impressive and humbling👍👍

Nations of the World
Al Murray is playing a character, 'the Pub Landlord'. The character is making fun of nationalist people, so he's very patriotic, but in an embarrassing way and considers all other countries to be useless. The comedy makes fun of all countries and through the character makes fun of the UK as well. For instance, the 'great' in Great Britain refers to Great Britain being big, not excellent. Al would know this, but his character will always try to make us look better at the expense of others, though those who know better will see the joke.
