Well you could give it a go and build a coffee table or end table and have some fun. Or just refurbish some old thing you find! You get a special type of satisfaction from building something that you see and use on a daily basis.
Thank you for the information and video I have been looking for, unfortunate for 48 YEARS! Yes, 48 years. On our 1976 honeymoon we [okay, I] bought 2 LARGE Redwood burls from a roadside wood yard in Sausalito, CA. Had been outdoors for ? Years, unsold due to their sizes, which dictated the pricing of the dozens of dinner plate & tray sizes of most of his wood blanks. Sold those for clock, small tables, plaques, etc. Anyway, they have moved across the country twice with us. Finally found a way to support 1 as The Table in a corner of our living room [@6' x 5']. The 2nd still in garage [@8' x 3>5'], 1 end doglegs a bit to 1 side. The slab isn't much wider but it requires a 'wider' overall rectangular space to lay flat. Told my new bride "will make a great breakfast bar!" She bought that line literally and figuratively in 1976! And she has reminded me of that many times! I burned out 2 electric sanders over the early years trying to smooth 1 of the 2 faces with the original saw marks. LOL! Luckily, both slabs had a relatively smooth face 'for showing'. Unfortunately, I am now too old to manhandle either piece (2) vs (5) people to move since they have dried out. Your video brought back many memories tied to our 'future' Dining Table & Breakfast Bar. Thank you!!
Wow! I am stunned. Thank you all for comments. My career brought us back to where I was born, Colorado. Altitude is @6000' and dry [snows mostly in the mountains, not where we live]. This video gave me some ideas to consider that maybe doable , considering my limitations. I have just started working with epoxy, but I have been undecided about filling the cracks and channels in the slabs. Gives them 'character ',
@@sebastianbenner977 just something that happened a few videos ago but now they are good and as the guy said their chemistry has definitely got better 😁
0% chance you'll read this comment since you have a bajillion subscribers. But, when gluing veneer, I've found that using epoxy as your adhesive can help with the moisture issues. PVA glue is water based, so it introduces water to the veneer, which causes uneven moisture and curling/cupping/twisting.
Maybe you should have an insect mesh screen on the door and a fly zapper by the door. So flies can't easily get inside and if the do get inside, they will be drawn away from the resin project.
Great job! And I love that you had Sam doing some of the explaining this time and he seems way more involved since the failed bend table. Great way to bring it back. Happy to see your videos on my FYP again 🎉
That book matched pattern in the base and the spalting on the edges takes that table to a whole other level. You picked the right cookie for this job. Your wife will be so, so, stoked.
As a hobby guitar builder…PLEASE build a guitar!! I’d love to see your approach to it! (Also, my little tip for tight book matching is jointing the piece while it’s still thick, marking it with a tick mark, and using that as your glue edge post resaw!)
I so look forward to my Sunday routine. Coffee in bed with John and the team making something beautiful. You guys make my Sunday morning special and for that I thank you 😘
I've watched you for what feels like 2 or 4 years and enjoyed all your content but never commented until now. That table is beautiful. Agree that a Cam/Blacktail-style subtle chamfer on the underside edge would elevate it even further, but it's an absolutely stunning table
It is truly an AMAZING INCREDIBLE TABLE!!! I think it is by far your best piece. Thank you for sharing. I think you should built a tiny workshop. Enough room for a table saw, lathe, small bandsaw and a rougher table. One love y’all.
That table turned out insane! The burl veneer in the legs was absolutely the right choice ❤ Also loving seeing Sam fully exploiting his protected status 😂 the way you guys all handled the inflated internet outrage with grace and humour is awesome to see! 😊
You have no idea what an inspiration you are to me. I went with my passion years ago and jumped into crafting wood decorations, furniture and other stuff only to have to stop because of my Wife's medical issues. Now I'm trying to get back into it after a decade and am having it a little ruff to start but you and Mattew Preach(sp) keep me going with not just the ideas but a love of the craft that we share. I am a recovering welder, lol. I do not go to bars in my marble inlay snap shirts and tell EVERBODY I'm a welder anymore, I'd rather go out to my shop and have a lot of fun creating and building various designs and allow my craftsmanship speak for me. Of coarse my welds looked like someone layed out a stack of dimes and I could do it on a table, in the air or under water. Shit, sorry. I said I'm recovering!!! Any way, I doubt you will read this post but I still want to say thank you for being you and showing how much fun it is to learn and grow the craft. I'm subed and ALWAYS watch the new vids, you guys are nuts!! Milt

Probably my most favorite project you guys have done so far. The table came out incredibly well and shows just how far you’ve come along in making the epoxy river tables.
The table is well built, but you were right: it could go catastrophically wrong even during the last few steps. It doesn't look terrible, but you turned the nice gloss from the epoxy into an eggshell finish with a *satin* version of the finish. I'm not sure why you thought this would be a good idea - as soon as I saw "satin" I kind of was skeptical, and when you said it would have a better sheen than lacquer, I was confused. It wasn't polishing out to a glass finish at all and it's sadly still hazy, hiding that beautiful burl edge. You can see the eggshell texture I'm talking about at 27:30. I thought you would be able to get rid of it with enough sanding tbh, but it could be some kind of feature of the satin finish as well.
Gibson uses bookmatched maple veneers on the tops of their les pauls and they essentially have a full build video on their TH-cam channel that yall could easily follow. Would be sick to see!
I don't think they have what it takes to be luthiers. Sure building the lp body shape with veneer might not be difficult but they'd never be able to do the binding on the body nor would they set the neck properly or get the scale length correct.not to mention the fretboard and frets. I like John but I think that's just a little out of their league. Yeah sure they poured 2 epoxy guitars but they also used pre-made bolt on necks.. an lp with a bolt on is an atrocity
@andrewdobosz3682 Other than a large slack belt sander, they have everything in their shop to make it happen. Gibson CNCs all of their bodies now. Even the binding grooves. Also, not all Les Pauls even have binding. Could still be a fun video even if it doesn't come out super quality. Or they could collab with BurlsArt or someone like that on here.
@@andrewdobosz3682 I might not expect them to build a custom shop level guitar on the first go, but John definitely has what it takes to give it a fair go, especially with Chris' CNC skills. Yes , set neck builds are a bit more advanced in some aspects, but every task in the process is not overly difficult (I've built 10 from scratch to date). Plus getting to see all the hurdles he'd go thru is half the enjoyment. I'd watch John build any type of guitar, set neck or not, and so would you.

Totally agree. THE best looking piece of furniture I've watched you build to date my friend. Your wife is gonna die when you unveil that in your dining room... Great job to all of you!!!!!!!
If you still think the epoxy is a bit hazy after all that polishing, just add a nanocoating (can be the one Cam supplies, or another brand) and you will get a higher clarity on the epoxy and also over the burl wood areas too. Great thing is you can apply it any time you eventually get around to reading this suggestion, and it will give you more protection 😊
Looks stunning! As a tip, I think when doing the bookmatching, put the two pieces together and hand plane them together. That would give you the best results for a perfect seam.
That is a piece of art work. If I had something like that in my home I would be sitting at the dinner table for hours every day just admiring the burl patterns.

What if you had large holes that led to a full aquarium underneath. Use the top table portion as an attached feeder/viewing tank. The fish will swim up into the table portion. It will allow for a much better fish friendly tank setup and clean up.
