Since you have so much pallet wood left over you should let Sam and Joe design their own table and give them the same amount of time to build it. See if they can sell it for more money.
I work at a printing plant and we use hundreds of pallets a week. A long time ago we had a shipment of new half skid (24x40”) pallets that were made out of what appeared to be a red oak. We had probably 150 of these. A coworker that also had a full wood shop took a bunch home and made wall planters and other small items from them
I think there are tons of better things to make from pallets than an undersized table with a high material cost from the epoxy. Even low quality pallets can be used for framing a couch and after covering with the cushions + fabric nobody can tell that it is made from pallet wood. You can also steam the wood to bend it and if you have one of those steel pallet strap things you can make wagon wheels or miniature barrels as decorations. Add a brand to it and you have decorative barrel mugs. If you have a CNC router you can do signage or other carvings etc. You basically want the work and uniqueness to give the value and not the material.
In my time of taking pallets apart, I found that cutting the outside runner off is the first step. Then you can rock the boards enough on the other runners to get the pry bar in without marring the wood. The inside runners typically have fewer nails as well. Then when I get the inside runners off, I take the small piece of wood off the outside runners so that I can use those as well.
I was a poor soldier and could not afford playground equipment for my kids. So I bought some 4x4 lumber, sandpaper and brought home dozens of free pallets and created a 14' tall spaceship and a 12' foot tall castle. With a bug sprayer and Thompson's Water Seal every 3 years this neighborhood center of the universe lasted 14 years until I moved.

One thing I have learned is you need to stage photos. Have your main photo with the product "in use". Most people can't imagine what it will look like without a nudge. So throw a nice wall in the back ground. For this, I would have had the laptop, lamp, and notebook on it. Second photo, some books with book ends, an open book and some candles. You can also show alternate uses, like a 2 person dinner table set up. Then have the white background detail photos. It is one of my fav things to do is the staged photos once I am done building my project. When in doubt, follow what fancy websites like pottery barn or William Sonoma ect do. They almost never show just the product as their main Pic. In the world of drop shippers, you need to show a little more effort.
I’m shocked they didn’t do that for this build. I’m pretty sure they staged the round 2 coffee table in his living room and that actually sold on marketplace.
Another thing I see people do staggeringly often on Facebook Marketplace (and other similar venues) is offer good things with almost ZERO details beyond whatever is most obvious. If I see a piece of furniture, more often than not there will be no measurements included, for example. Potential buyers need to know whether an item could fit into their space. Or there will be a window AC with no size, BTU rating, or model number. And if you ask the seller questions, they typically answer only the first question, if any, or just say they don’t know - often making you wait 24 hours for that tidbit.
This is clickbait buddy. I make epoxy tables that are 16 inche circles and they take over $200 of epoxy and $30 worth of table legs to make. Theres no way they make and sell tables like this for $400 or $300 in the real world and then just give it away for free 😂
If the epoxy color was that first Caribbean beach water aqua blue, I'd have found that table irresistible. But that deeper dark blue with the pour swirls just reminds me of bowling ball material and puts me off.
The best way to use reclaimed pallets is to find a use for the tops without having to knock out many dozens of nails per pallet. It's great for roughboarding essentially, but not all pallets are suitable.
Hey John. I've been doing my epoxy coffee tables and river tables making own silicon molds. You should give silicone a try. No more buying boards and tape. Flexible, handles heat well, and I simply peel the mold off and use it for more projects. Also less expensive to make your own molds than make them with boards and tape. Look into it. It's a game changer.
I don’t think the listing/product is the issue with trying to sell it but it’s what you’re trying to sell it on. Marketplace is usually for people who are getting used things for a cheaper price rather than expensive new things that look professional. And the lower prices with such good photos taken make it a “seems too good to be true” people may think it’s some sort of scam. (And the 3 different listings from different accounts wouldn’t help this either lol)
The listing was very much the issue. It didn't look professional, it looked fake. Most people don't have a lot of imagination so they need better title than "river table desk" and a few bland photos on a white background. Next time he tries something like this he should lean into the eco aspect (reclaimed wood, repurposing, etc.) and stage the photos in a "real" environment with examples it can be used - so at least one or two photos of it being used as a desk, with a laptop and accessories, another as a dining table for two or four.

You would not regret getting a nail remover gun. Pneumatic style will pay for itself in time saved. Also, a forked pry tool for pallets, whether home made or store bought is also worth its weight in gold for ease of breaking down pallets. Time is money and saving your back is also important. If you get a power nail remove, do it over a bucket with water in it, as the nails ricochet with a lot of intensity!!!!!!
Yup. I got the Air Locker AP700 a little while ago and it’s a massive time saver. With me on the “pallet buster” and my son on the denailer, we can have a pallet disassembled and nail free in under 5 minutes. That job used to take me 20+ minutes working alone with a hammer and a small pry bar.
John used one of those forked pry tools for pallets in his first pallet video. I don't know what he did with it but it really wasn't working so good for him anyways. I use a custom fork I made that I hit with a lump hammer. I like how it busts the slats off pallets. John has all the gear to make one too. You get a piece of 3" C channel and cut a little pocket in one end a few inches deep Then one the legs of that pocket you weld some 2 inch leg pieces of angle. So they stick up like little feet. When you have the bar on a pallet the channel should be about at a 45° angle when those angle feet are under a slat. Then you wack the top of that channel with a lump hammer. So the feet drive up under the slat. That rig pops boards off.
I'm not a woodworker at all, a tradesman yet, but I find your videos very entertaining so far. I watched the cutting board challenge video, makes me want to make cheap cutting boards myself lol

Take that table that didnt sell for 400, if you try to market in a more commercial setting Im pretty sure you would get much more for it. When you move into fine art you have to also move your marketing in the same direction or you will miss the full potential of your customer base.
I was going to say that the high quality appearance was probably acting as a red flag and hurting their chances at selling the table. There are gems on the marketplace but you never instantly jump on it because that's how you get scammed.
Facebook marketplace used to be ok to sell on, it is anything but ok to sell on anymore unless it’s random household items your just looking to pawn off for a few bucks. Plus everyone is looking to dog you down and get a better deal on marketplace. It’s a joke anymore

My personal observation on Marketplace: Not sure if it's just my area or if this happens with everyone. This last year no matter how many times I edit my location, miles radius, etc. Marketplace insists on showing me items that are HOURS away from my location or located in another Country (I live in the US on the border of Canada but there's 24 MILES of WATER that separate us). If I put a particular item into the Marketplace search, it only shows stuff hours away from me. Yet when I click the "categories" it'll show the items I want are available all around me. I've been looking for tires & a lawnmower for over a year but Marketplace insists on showing things too far away. I finally gave up on Marketplace. I have to wonder if these reasons are why there wasn't any interest on the table/desk.
Awesome video, thank you for sharing. When I take a part pallets for projects I use a wrecking bar I bought years ago to pull decking off framing. It goes quick and has been a game changer.
When you list on Facebook marketplace, or anywhere tbh… don’t just take pictures of the furniture. Make sure you stage it, put a lamp on it, put a monitor on it and a pen holder maybe a plant or something. Make sure it catches people’s eyes so that they can see what they could possibly use it for!
When I was young I spent about 3 weeks at summer heat pulling pallets apart and pulling all the nails out. At least we had this special tool for pulling the nails. It had a hinge kind of mechanism which snapped to the nail and long arm that allowed one to pull even the base of the nails through the wood. It wasn't pleasant work but young man had to do what young man had to do to get some money. :D
Thats the annoying part. Makers rarely mention how fucking much it would cost for average joe just in epoxy alone. Lumber prices are ridiculous as well and while you might get lucky sometimes, most of the time companies here ask 25€ per pallet if you want to get them -.- Mostly cause people got them for fire wood and stuff like this.
Dude, that table looks incredible! The way the resin flows is so mesmerizing. You should totally make more of these and maybe try a twist like a live edge or something 🌊💙. Can't wait to see if it sells!
Loved the table with the standard wooden frame. Some of us like to be able to move the furniture around our spaces. Also, can we start seeing some lighter colored wood? I’m so over dark furniture, it shows dust like crazy. Simple & clean lines are in pretty please.

Challenge for next time! Rather than a bigger furniture project... how about turning pallets into a batching project? Turn a bunch of pallets into Christmas tree decorations, and sell them en mass. And I don't mean just simple stuff, I mean creating a crazy set of jigs to turn boring pallet wood into interesting and sellable small items. Sam, Go! ;)

22:26 you could also play with different kinds of tape, I personally like the blue fine line tape from 3M, i dont know the exact material it is made of but it stretches nicely takes and holds curves perfectly and if you take a heat gun and put just a smidge of heat to it when you press it down to lock in the tape edge then it will hold a perfect tape line everytime. I can’t say forsure how it would stick to wood, I’ve used it more for automotive than anything and you can even get it down in 1/8 or 1/16 in sizes which makes the stuff you can do just crazy, but the $15 is worth the try if you ask me, but even in a situation like this it maybe better to just use a paintbrush.
I just thought of an idea. A shop bench vise that is electric with just push button in and out. Could also feature a pressure gauge so you know how much force is applied. Im quadriplegic and my hand dont work that great. This could be a awesome solution for others with disabilities.

I'm at 19 minutes and I dont know yet how it'll end up but if I were to give advice, I'd say keep it as just the desk top sans the base. Reasoning being that there is a hype regarding standing desk nowadays and a lot of standing desk enjoyers would love to customize their desk top. The only issue is that there is no standardize configuration(?) for how to connect the base with the top. And since there are plenty of standing desk manufacturers, its hard to make something that fit all. What you can do is leave the desk top as is and then either ask the customer to give measurements for the placement before shipping out or just let them handle it themselves.
John Malecki, you... are the Ace of (metal) Base. Also, pro tip from the whisky secondary market (though I hate it), find the auction sales price and now, "John Malecki furniture sells for $X,XXX." And since it's a charity auction, it would be a higher price than you would normally get. Yes, it's shady... but that's business.
As someone with experience in marketing - your biggest mistake (if we don't count using fb marketplace to sell high end professionally made table) was using only photos and video of the table with plain white background. That type of photo looks great for a listing and showing details of the product but it won't catch anybody's attention as it looks just too plain. You need to add another style of photo - situational. Take that table and put it in a situation it would be used in, for example, someone's living room or study. Put some decorations on it, some plants (it has been proven that people react positively to plants, even the fake plastic ones), maybe a book or magazines (but keep the theme neutral, unless you are selling to a specific group, in which case go all in) and a laptop. Maybe have someone in plain clothing ("your average Joe/Jane") sit by it in some of the photos. It will help your potential customers envision what that table might look like in their house and it will help it stand out in the sea of other similar products. Imagine how the furniture is sold for example in Ikea - you have entire fake rooms made out of their products because it sells them better, people can imagine where and how in their houses they could use those pieces of furniture and they are then more enticed to buy them because of that.
Also sometimes called "Pallet Ripper." A "nail punch" and "nail remover pliers" are must have tools also. But yeah, this is the guy selling a "master class."

You can buy a purpose built pallet breaker that pops the boards off pritty clean its like a crowbar with two lever points. Once you have used it a few times its quick to break up pallets

This is why I stopped working with pallets. In the beginning for a woodworker, there's definitely a place for wood that's free with some extra work to get it, but it quickly becomes more work than it's worth, especially the nails. It's not too horrible if you want small pieces and can just cut the boards off, but taking 6 to 9 nails out of 8 or 10 boards ... that gets old reeeeeal quick.
If you're going to keep doing pallet projects, you should make yourself a pallet buster. Basically, just a pipe with a round bottom and 2 fingers that can reach between boards/runners and pry them out in seconds. No hammering. Just google it and you should be able to copy
Watch John's first pallet video. He had a pallet buster then. Hammering is actually your best bet. I made a custom fork I can hammer on with a big lump hammer. It makes the slats fly off pallets.

Someone get this man one of those magic nail remover tools, and up the scale! Why one river table, when you can go entire pallet dining room set. Toss in a challenge, like "No nails/screws" for the final "pallet project" Could be part of a bigger series of furnishing a house with various pallet challenges.
If it helps, I use a scissor jack to pry the wood apart from the pallet. It works for me and I just take the nails out afterwards. Yeah I’m left with holes after but I find it adds character to the piece.
Pallet jacks can tear pallets up if you're not careful with them. Or you can use a pallet jack to bust pallets up on purpose too. I have a 10 ton porta power hydraulic kit I've done mean things to pallets with. It works good on the block spacer style pallets.

Damn red oak that's not bad at all. Here pallets are all spruce or something worthless. I wouldn't even use it for my fireplace.

There are gems on the marketplace but you never instantly jump on it because that's how you get scammed.
Facebook marketplace used to be ok to sell on, it is anything but ok to sell on anymore unless it’s random household items your just looking to pawn off for a few bucks. Plus everyone is looking to dog you down and get a better deal on marketplace. It’s a joke anymore
You do realize he doesn't actually care if it sells right? He makes way more money off of this build video than he could ever make off of selling furniture.
My personal observation on Marketplace:

This last year no matter how many times I edit my location, miles radius, etc. Marketplace insists on showing me items that are HOURS away from my location or located in another Country (I live in the US on the border of Canada but there's 24 MILES of WATER that separate us).
If I put a particular item into the Marketplace search, it only shows stuff hours away from me.
Yet when I click the "categories" it'll show the items I want are available all around me.
I've been looking for tires & a lawnmower for over a year but Marketplace insists on showing things too far away.
I finally gave up on Marketplace.
I have to wonder if these reasons are why there wasn't any interest on the table/desk.
Awesome video, thank you for sharing. When I take a part pallets for projects I use a wrecking bar I bought years ago to pull decking off framing. It goes quick and has been a game changer.
When you list on Facebook marketplace, or anywhere tbh… don’t just take pictures of the furniture. Make sure you stage it, put a lamp on it, put a monitor on it and a pen holder maybe a plant or something. Make sure it catches people’s eyes so that they can see what they could possibly use it for!
When I was young I spent about 3 weeks at summer heat pulling pallets apart and pulling all the nails out. At least we had this special tool for pulling the nails. It had a hinge kind of mechanism which snapped to the nail and long arm that allowed one to pull even the base of the nails through the wood. It wasn't pleasant work but young man had to do what young man had to do to get some money. :D
$600 of deep pour epoxy plus labor to build a "$400 table" lol. It's awesome that you all donated it to a good cause though.

Thats the annoying part. Makers rarely mention how fucking much it would cost for average joe just in epoxy alone. Lumber prices are ridiculous as well and while you might get lucky sometimes, most of the time companies here ask 25€ per pallet if you want to get them -.- Mostly cause people got them for fire wood and stuff like this.
Dude, that table looks incredible! The way the resin flows is so mesmerizing. You should totally make more of these and maybe try a twist like a live edge or something 🌊💙. Can't wait to see if it sells!
Used pallets to make my workbench a few years ago. Wasn’t pretty, but it was functional which was really the only important part
Loved the table with the standard wooden frame. Some of us like to be able to move the furniture around our spaces. Also, can we start seeing some lighter colored wood? I’m so over dark furniture, it shows dust like crazy. Simple & clean lines are in pretty please.

I love me some pallets!! Transplanted back stateside and waiting to start work, pallets are a great source of wood for projects. I have a video dropping next Saturday where I build a center console for my JDM truck out of pallet wood.

The nice thing about a desk, is that it also doubles as a coffee table and a dining table! I had a desk and an office chair in my living room for the first year or so after I bought my house.
I'm not a huge fan of river tables, but this is beautiful. If I had room for it, I'd love it. I do love the pattern of the epoxy.

I always find it entertaining when you mention Morley on here... his first pallet table video, I posted a comment from my personal/alt YT account about how awful his tablesaw practice was (seriously, he was risking his thumbs, but his next video was a whole world better and he had everything he needed to do it safely) and how no new woodworker should EVER follow what he was doing, it was and still is the top comment. I still get people commenting on it.

P.P.S. Challenge for next time! Rather than a bigger furniture project... how about turning pallets into a batching project? Turn a bunch of pallets into Christmas tree decorations, and sell them en mass. And I don't mean just simple stuff, I mean creating a crazy set of jigs to turn boring pallet wood into interesting and sellable small items. Sam, Go! ;)

22:26 you could also play with different kinds of tape, I personally like the blue fine line tape from 3M, i dont know the exact material it is made of but it stretches nicely takes and holds curves perfectly and if you take a heat gun and put just a smidge of heat to it when you press it down to lock in the tape edge then it will hold a perfect tape line everytime. I can’t say forsure how it would stick to wood, I’ve used it more for automotive than anything and you can even get it down in 1/8 or 1/16 in sizes which makes the stuff you can do just crazy, but the $15 is worth the try if you ask me, but even in a situation like this it maybe better to just use a paintbrush.

I just thought of an idea. A shop bench vise that is electric with just push button in and out. Could also feature a pressure gauge so you know how much force is applied. Im quadriplegic and my hand dont work that great. This could be a awesome solution for others with disabilities.

I'm at 19 minutes and I dont know yet how it'll end up but if I were to give advice, I'd say keep it as just the desk top sans the base. Reasoning being that there is a hype regarding standing desk nowadays and a lot of standing desk enjoyers would love to customize their desk top. The only issue is that there is no standardize configuration(?) for how to connect the base with the top. And since there are plenty of standing desk manufacturers, its hard to make something that fit all. What you can do is leave the desk top as is and then either ask the customer to give measurements for the placement before shipping out or just let them handle it themselves.

Damnit if I would have been closer and known about it I would have definitely bought it. That is beautiful.
As someone with experience in marketing - your biggest mistake (if we don't count using fb marketplace to sell high end professionally made table) was using only photos and video of the table with plain white background. That type of photo looks great for a listing and showing details of the product but it won't catch anybody's attention as it looks just too plain. You need to add another style of photo - situational. Take that table and put it in a situation it would be used in, for example, someone's living room or study. Put some decorations on it, some plants (it has been proven that people react positively to plants, even the fake plastic ones), maybe a book or magazines (but keep the theme neutral, unless you are selling to a specific group, in which case go all in) and a laptop. Maybe have someone in plain clothing ("your average Joe/Jane") sit by it in some of the photos. It will help your potential customers envision what that table might look like in their house and it will help it stand out in the sea of other similar products. Imagine how the furniture is sold for example in Ikea - you have entire fake rooms made out of their products because it sells them better, people can imagine where and how in their houses they could use those pieces of furniture and they are then more enticed to buy them because of that.
Should've put a support across the bottom between the legs in the center. Would've taken the rock out and be a nice place to set your feet.
there is actually a pallet buster tool that you can buy that will take the boards off with the nails easily.
Also sometimes called "Pallet Ripper." A "nail punch" and "nail remover pliers" are must have tools also. But yeah, this is the guy selling a "master class."

You can buy a purpose built pallet breaker that pops the boards off pritty clean its like a crowbar with two lever points. Once you have used it a few times its quick to break up pallets

Perfect timing, I just finished watching the other pallet table videos the other day.
This is why I stopped working with pallets. In the beginning for a woodworker, there's definitely a place for wood that's free with some extra work to get it, but it quickly becomes more work than it's worth, especially the nails. It's not too horrible if you want small pieces and can just cut the boards off, but taking 6 to 9 nails out of 8 or 10 boards ... that gets old reeeeeal quick.
If you're going to keep doing pallet projects, you should make yourself a pallet buster. Basically, just a pipe with a round bottom and 2 fingers that can reach between boards/runners and pry them out in seconds. No hammering. Just google it and you should be able to copy
Watch John's first pallet video. He had a pallet buster then. Hammering is actually your best bet. I made a custom fork I can hammer on with a big lump hammer. It makes the slats fly off pallets.

Someone get this man one of those magic nail remover tools, and up the scale! Why one river table, when you can go entire pallet dining room set. Toss in a challenge, like "No nails/screws" for the final "pallet project" Could be part of a bigger series of furnishing a house with various pallet challenges.

If it helps, I use a scissor jack to pry the wood apart from the pallet. It works for me and I just take the nails out afterwards. Yeah I’m left with holes after but I find it adds character to the piece.
Pallet jacks can tear pallets up if you're not careful with them. Or you can use a pallet jack to bust pallets up on purpose too. I have a 10 ton porta power hydraulic kit I've done mean things to pallets with. It works good on the block spacer style pallets.
