I thought we talked about this? No negativity! 🤣🤣 Overall, a nice update, but still pretty far from the competition when it comes to video AF. Still enjoying my Fuji gear for stills though. 😁
Those between the mug handle shots are a good way to test and I love that you touched on the focusing after leaving the frame. Should we just call it a day and say just leave sensitivity to +4 on 95% of our talking head videos? I think thats the sweet spot dont you think?
@@edvard2942it’s funny that Fuji AF is very lens dependent, meanwhile I am having really good time with Nikon ZF + Sony lenses. Adapted lenses on Nikon is doing far better job than Fuji.
Thanks for your effort to make this review. It seems Fuji still has a lot thing to do to keep up with other brands. If you want a reliable system for shooting video, Sony or Canon or Panasonic is definitely a better choice. Luckily, I do still photography only so Fujifilm is still my choice cause I love this brand :))
Great test that puts much into context. I am more into tracking my kid on a bmx than content creation for product reviews or the like. Can you share the settings that you have used for the 120fps bird video?
I have the tracking sensitivity set to +2 and AF speed +2 and bird subject detect on (obviously). You could try the motorcycle/bike tracking mode or maybe face/eye detect.
I really think now the next gen of Fuji cameras is needed to have reliable focus. I've noticed that the camera doesn't send commands fast enough to the lens to react. Which could be related to lack of processing power or just Fuji engineers not being able to fully resolve the focusing problems. Imagine X-H2, X-T5 and X-S20 camera lines with focus as good as Sony A6700...
All of those big steps in bokeh that you mentioned are the result of the Firmware 4 on the xt3. On firmware 3 there are steps but they are a lot of them and very small so they are not visible in this awful way in the bokeh. Multi 6:25 it doesnt work because PDAF doesnt work properly and you are too blury , not enough contrast in your body for the camera to focus on you. That's why when you back up it gets you.
I think it has something to do with the Subject sensitivity set to +4 as well. Because when I did the same thing at a lower sensitivity, it was able to get me
I mentioned that on Edvards video too, but it seems Fuji put an AI tracking algorithm on a sub par phase detection AF system. The way the camera drives the lens motors and transitions between distances shows that there is something seriously wrong about the basis of the system. I had the 33mm and although it has a linear motor, it was slow and could not keep up with faster subjects in AFC. So imo Fuji needs to fix how they process the phase detection data and translates those to the lens. It‘s not the lens motors that but the software which is the issue.
I am very happy with the results. Ill never expect completely stable footage on anything past 56mm on this sensor. Gimbals and tripods are both dirt cheap these days.
Hoping they release a good firmware for the X-S20 soon… I guess the current one was better than the flagship already though. Maybe the X-H3S will be Lumix level. Ha
Did you notice any of the lenses being more noisy when acquiring focus after the update? There's several reports on this but it's been sporadic so far.
I didn't pay much attention. I'd have to go back and listen to the clips. Edvard is probably going to do some additional videos that may be revealing in this regard
Thanks for the test and the various settings you've tried. It boggles me how the LM lenses are still noticeably stepping on any setting, as can be seen in the trees in the background, or on other Videos when there are bokeh balls from lights. It really seems like the XF mount is not using a high frequency between the lens to body communication. Edvard has a possible explanation in his latest video. Edit: in his today's short he even shows how the X-H2s is using CDAF and the old X-T3 focuses MUCH better.
What I noticed is that the actual square that sits on the eye is not jittering about as much in the older firmware and if you look at my XT5 which is sitting right next to me on my desk if I use it and I know they are gonna fix the XT5 as well the actual square just never sat still whereas you look at the square now and all the rectangle I should say that sits over the eye. It seems to not be jumping about as much and that's a good sign. It shouldn't move at all once it locks onto the eye but obviously people move so it's kind of anticipating that movement but it's a big step in the right direction and at least now people can use these cameras for professional video work or even just photographing a friend's birthday party or whatever it's a good step in the right direction. I would also like to see someone holding the camera not on a tripod outside where both parties are moving to person holding the camera and the person who is being videoed is also moving. No one has done this test yet it's all been on tripods. It is different on a tripod because a camera sits in a stagnant position and then you move in and out of the frame once it picks up one of the 425 focus points on the camera essentially it will focus but when you're moving around it is a completely different ball game. I just wish they could also and I know we're probably nitpicking now that the transition to the outer focus was slower so essentially once it determines that it is not focusing on the person that there's a slow transition out of that time but that would be really cool even if it was an option to have a slower out of focus area coming to play I hope I'm making sense here like a fade essentially.
@@PhillipRPeckThanks. All the new firmware tests are with 1.0 and 1.4 lenses, i.e. expensive but i'm sure there are a lot of hobbyists who don't own those lenses.
Apart from autofocus I experience problems in auto exposure as well. It shifts so sudden, make it unusable. I used xt4 and xs10 both have same issue. Did you use manual exposure here? Or never experienced this issue with auto exposure in xs2s?
AF is the Achilles' Heel of Fujifilm! They will never get it right unless they get out of their current thinking! It's been over 10 years of abysmal AF and no solution in sight!
@@PhillipRPeck It's always been a back-and-forth process moving from one firmware to the next! I think they have their head buried in the sand. Even Canon and Nikon came from behind to surpass their lacklustre attention to AF. Shame on you Fuji!
Slender man. People need to understand tha fujifilm and Panasonic had the same issue so give fujifilm little time to solve their issue. As you can see autofocus was partially revised soo give little more time to fixed it fully. Fujifilm knows gonna lose a lot of users if they dont solve it
So far best review of newest Fujifilm firmware update I've seen on YT. Excellent job bro! And respect for being honest. Much appreciated! 👌
Thank you!
The bird photography part is very impressive. It complies with my experience, and I am satisfied with the 150-600 combo
That manual focus on the Fuji is class leading 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂.
Even the manual focus on XF lenses is stepping

Respectful and objective contribution. Thx.
Brilliant improvement. Now waiting for XT-5
X-H2/150-600 here and it works fine for me, very good eye/bird detect! Unaware of video capabilities…..lol.
Hey, quick question for you. My tracking is perfectly fine in stills mode, but does yours actually focus as well? (Green Square after white square)

Yeah, that's always been my go to and it's even better now I think.
Finally someone did the touch tracking test. I did it this evening & it is totally unusable.
Because the lens is lagging behind, there's no constant tracking. AF was destroyed years ago

Thank you for uploading this! For my first camera im having trouble deciding between the FX30, a6700 and this. This helps a ton.

Asking for a friend: how good is the AF when stopping down to f2 or f4 or on a lens like the xf18-55?
It's good. I mean the underlying system is the same, but the deeper depth of field makes problems less obvious
