I always viewed the engine as a huge issue: - Turbofan engines have a rather slow spool up time. If it was a high bypass TF, with variable fan blades (similar to helicopter collective), this could probably be mitigated. Otherwise altitude control would be very sluggish. - The engines would be susceptible to flameouts during certain maneuvers, as not enough air is sucked in. - Both engines need do be balanced constantly. If one of them fails, that's it. You can't just link both 'fans' with an axle, like the V-22, because you need that combustion for extra thrust. - You can't really put too much armor on it, it's gonna be pretty complex and it's a huge target. A single hit from a MANPAD or ZSU-23 could be fatal, or at least very costly. All things considered, I think the Harrier already fits into the same role nicely. It can't hover in combat, but it's fast and maneuverable to avoid fire. On a small scale though? Sure, slap some fat EDFs on it and set up the flight controller properly. You can find some videos about that kind of setup on YT. Not the most detailed models, but cool nonetheless. You still don't wanna lose an engine, but crashes would be much cheaper ;)
