Here’s the rule of thumb: if the biggest influencers get sponsored by a product, look for an alternative and ignore said product completely
Also look for the main active ingredient and just buy that.
100% I also think that’s true of all new products with huge marketing campaigns and budgets. If a product comes out of no where and is everywhere their biggest expense is marking and not the actual product.
another rule of thumb is to seek out USDA Organic certified products, if youre in the US. It's not perfect, but you can mostly trust it
Joe Rogan still promotes BetterHelp, despite it being known for a long time to scrape info from your browser and leaking/selling it along with your most personal/deep/private emotional wounds and dark secrets.
So how should I shave my balls?
the thing about ag1 is its so expensive that at that price point its worth it to just get your blood tested and see what nuitrients you are actually deficient in and then take supplements of those specific things. it would save you a lot of money

Good luck! $500 for nutrient testing and then supplements or dietary change to correct deficiencies and then another round of testing to verify that your body has the enzymes to absorb and convert the raw materials. Also, who knows what levels of various nutrients are optimal? Plenty of disagreement over this.

When Huberman started promoting this when so many people on YT were debunking it, I realized being an expert in one field doesn't make you an expert in every field. I don't trust his opinions on stuff that is not is field of study
I am even starting to distrust anything Huberman says in his field of study as well. If he won't admit to the limits of his knowledge AND shows us how driven he is by sponsorship money, fame, and status*, then everything he says is suspect.
*I say this because he has all but shut down his actual study lab at his university in favor of his for-profit company, turning into a highly paid personality than merely a well paid researcher.

I don't think he ever claimed to be an expert on athlete greens or to be a nutritionist , it's merely a pop product he is shilling.
Andrew is great at distilling science down for the layman, I don't think there's more to it than that. He's not giving financial or medical advice, if you are interested in something he says or claims then you're free to go and research it or talk to a medical professional in that area.. Why aren't people able to use common sense?
Huberman, imho, is basically a sad little boy in a big man's body, looking for attention and acclaim. Those motivations can ultimately lead us to make self-serving choices.

the money shoveled into marketing has to made back somewhere, inferior quality or massive markup. ag1 has chosen mostly the latter.
i find most supplement product placement borderline scam, since i spend quite some time researching (sports) nutrition...
yet advertising ag1 to the average hobby sportsman is way more ethical than other stuff I've seen (ESPECIALLY outside the climbing niché)

Wow, what a fantastic unbiased, educated investigation of AG1.
I took it for about a year but stopped due to cost and suddenly developing a dislike for the taste, in fact I still have one pack left and have been forcing myself to take it rather than waste it.
I'm going to post a link to this video on every channel I follow that promotes it because people really need to hear your unbiased video and then decide if they want to continue supporting the hype.

AG1 athletes in shambles rn
First thing I thought of when AG1 flushed on to the scene was SOYLENT GREEN.
What's wrong with Soylent? Btw the latter is a meal replacement drink whereas the former is just a nutrient supplement drink.
"Soylent Green", is from the 70's film of the same name, (set in 2022!) the food substitute was being manufactured from the corpses of euthenised people 🤢
The film with Charlton Heston was first thing I thought of the first time I saw an AG1. If Soylent Green were a real thing it would probably be more useful than AG1.

This has got to be the most informative, well put together, and evenly presented rebuttal/cross examination of AG I've seen to date. Well done, thank you for the video!
I love it when you find a focal point for your knowledge as a nutritionist and when you speak I listen. It’s clearly a labor of love. I appreciate you stepping outside the influencer circle and weighing in on this very hyped product
I tried AG1 last year. I did not feel ANY difference, in the first week, second, third or fourth week.
When I take a probiotic, that is ONLY a probiotic, I can feel and see results in three days to a week.
When I take my B vitamins, I can feel and see results in one to two days.
When I take Turmeric for inflammation, I can feel results in one to two days.
Oregano Oil, I feel results in one to two weeks.
Chlorella. . .
Spirulina. . . results in a week to two.
With AG1 (if they are even REALLY putting in, what they claim they put in the bag), I felt nothing, and saw NO results whatsoever, from the first scoop, to the last.
But that isn't the only reason I canceled the subscription.
As you were saying, Dave. . . I think AG1 wants to put so many ingredients into their product, that the quantities are forced to be very minimal, thus having NO type of affect or benefit to the customer.
I also didn't like that it wasn't until I received my order, that I saw the "Prop. 65" warning on the package.
And of course then there is the cost of the AG1. WAY overpriced.
You can find alternatives with more quantity of the better ingredients in AG1 for 1/3 to half the price.
And also, you can get a lot of the nutrients off of real foods and raw fruits, veggies and nuts.
Look into how many benefit there are in Brazil nuts, walnuts, and dates. Just ONE Brazil nut per day gives you so many benefits. Same goes for eating just two dates per day. And they will not cost you a $95 monthly subscription.
What probiotic do you use? I can't seem to find any that isn't marketing BS.
Most of the things you are taking are just placebo.
You are a really feely person on supplements. I can't feel chlorella or spirulina or tumeric or probiotics. It's a great skill, even with the risk of a placebo effect, I trust my feeling more than any influencer. I could feel vitamin D (mood) and quercetin (allergies).
^^THIS ^^ I appreciate your knowledge and insight, thank you for sharing. My family has a long and varied history of mental illnesses, some more serious, others less so. I've striven diligently to cope and deal with my own since I was a child, though I didn't know what I know now. I always valued exercise and fresh air. I highly credit my mother for all she taught me about nutrition and gardening. I grew up in farmland in the 70's and 80's and know a great deal about well sourced, REAL food, how to grow or find it. I'm well in tune with how varying foods and activities affect my body and mind. I don't climb on bandwagons. I never climbed on the "butter, eggs, milk are bad, we should eat margarine" bandwagon back in the day. I made sure to source my eggs, butter and milk well, fresh from conscientiously run farms. It's been interesting to watch so many fad bandwagons fall off the cliffs over the years. Even though I know how to eat right and exercise, my body is deficient in some areas of it's metabolism. I need to take a prescribed anti-depressant, Vitamin D+K, and magnesium. I'm very careful about any supplements or drugs I use. I research them carefully and look for good sources - they're not all equal! I absolutely feel the difference, just like you do, with my vtm D, magnesium, and my antidepressent. If I don't note a good difference within 3 weeks to a month, I will not spend money on something. I ditched the U.S. recommended 400 IUs of D two decades ago - that amount is a joke. I take 5,000 or more in the summer, 20,000 to 30,000 in the winter (Northern MN). It helps more than my prescribed antidepressent. I make golden turmeric paste every month and cook regularly with it - with high content curcumin. The turmeric makes a significant difference in my 57 year old knees. I also peel my farm fresh egg membranes and eat them with my eggs, as well as feeding them to my 150 lb Great Pyrenees - they're an excellent source of glucosamine chondroitin. He gets golden paste too. Big doggo's joints are in great shape and impress the vets. I eat salmon, sardines, and smoked oysters every week and add spirulina and seaweed on my salads or in my home-made dressings. I've never needed a probiotic, my digestive system is utterly amazing. I wish my knees were that good lol. The supplement that does not work on me and puzzles me is the B complex. I've tried vtm Bs over and over and over again - they SHOULD have a positive affect on my nervous system, but I feel zippo from taking those supplements. I suspect there's some other deficiency in my metabolism that needs to interact with B12 and B6. The fact that I carry high hopes every time I try B supplementing AGAIN, feel no improvement from them but do feel improvement from the supplements I do take, is proof positive these aren't just placebos. I'm in tune with my body and use what works. The narcissists who think they sit on some omniscient god throne and judge for all that supplements are placebos are just shallow egotists. Supplements may not be needed for some people, but necessary for others. My medical healthcare providers respect my knowledge and self-care, as I respect their expertise. I highly value the common sense of Dave on this channel - I focus most on well researched, well sourced food. My fresh egg sources are golden to me, I add my golden paste when I make my eggs so they're golden too. Good food doesn't come in any scoop - especially "in return for a big scoop of yer income" lol, LUVIT! Doing my own research, using logic and good sense, health journaling, and being in tune with myself has served me very well, and saved me plenty of moolah 😁 I didn't like the hype about AG1, made me suspect, but wondered about it. I really like Dave's video, and I also respect your take on it, thank you!

Thanks for this video. Everyone is promoting it. I had a look and just wasn’t convinced. I tried to find research that showed any real benefit. But couldn’t find anything real. This was a brilliant video.
A good rule of thumb is that any product that is suddenly promoted by a ton of youtubers is at best wildly overpriced and more likely a bad product as well. Especially when it comes to food or (mental) health related products.

@@djgulia3656 Yeah, you can get the same thing by adding salt, potassium, and magnesium to water and add your own flavourings if you can't drink it straight.
If you don't like liver, beef heart is also a very good source of iron, surprisingly tender, very cheap, and can be marinated or put in stew to cover up the occasional iron tasting bite very easily.

Honestly, I admire AG1's marketing strategy. It's obviously working very well for them. I did buy into the hype and test out the supplement for a month or two. Taking it each morning made me *think* I was doing something good for my health but I started to question it pretty quickly. The price tag is insane, I just couldn't justify the cost A) as someone with a good diet to begin with and B) for something that didn't have any noticeable benefits. Thanks for this great deep dive into the supplement and it's worthiness, it was a good reality check that I shouldn't be spending my money on this product.

Excellent summary Dave. I have friends who use supplements instead of real food, especially to reduce calories. Climbers, in particular can obsess over their bodyweight and increasing grades, even if they are never entering competitions.
I am the same, I'll supplement vits but eat only like 3 things, eggs, cheese, and chicken. Occassionally I'll eat a couple slices of bread or a spoonful of salad.

we are animal based, we have liver once a months and between two to four times a week we have wild oily fish.
my children have never had icecream from that disgusting truck, instead they have home made sugar free one.
they only have seed based foods like pizza or pasta twice a week.
It's so stressfull being told that we are eating unhealthy by their obese teachers, family members and unhealthy looking doctors!

My guess is that as I’m writing 5 months after you originally posted this, my comment may never get read. But I still had to say how brilliant this video is. As much as I like to call myself a climber, professionally for over 25 years I’ve been a professor of organic chemistry. And in addition to the standard courses, over that time I’ve also taught a few where we take on a lot of pseudoscience including aspects of the supplement world. I think you’re so spot on with everything you say, and the literature references are marvelous. On the personal anecdote side, one of the family dishes I cook is a lovely and simple sardine/kale pasta, and ironically I had liver on toast when I got back from the climbing gym today because the liver happened to be included with a chicken I recently bought. It’s not hard to find a way to a nutrient rich diet, and you’ll not only feel better physically but also better about your role in the world, especially if you can support local, sustainable farms in the process. Bravo! So glad I recently ordered your new book and can support your channel and content.

You are in a very very small club of knowledgable athletes/scientists who do not promote supplements and hence you are my most trusty resource for nutrition advice. BTW, switching to keto about half a year ago has been pivotal for me. After listening to you I reframed how I look at news articles about any science topic and now I'm much more likely to actually read the research instead of some conclusion popularized in the news
Yep if someone doesn't have time to boil some eggs then they likely have other lifestyle issues/chocies that need to be addressed prior to changing their diet

For anyone curious about vegetarian alternatives, pulses (particularly lentils) are a good source of non-heme iron, and also protein, though tofu is a better source of protein and also comes with good levels of calcium and other nutrients. This information is shown in the charts Dave shows. Though indeed they are lower than the animal products Dave mentions it is possible to have a nutrient dense diet using plant foods.
However yeah for anybody in Scotland, you're definitely going to want to be slamming back a lot of vitamin D.
Good video generally. There are far cheaper greens powders out there if you do want to use that to supplement antioxidants, perhaps alongside some things like CBD, ginger, turmeric etc that have actual anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting effects :)
Non-heme iron is inferior and the antinutrients in most plants cancel out benefits, or actually toxic for many.
Anti nutrients are destroyed by cooking in virtually all cases, they are of almost no concern to someone on a vegetarian diet. Human health data is abundantly clear and available that eating vegetables is good for you and entirely sufficient for excellent health if that’s how you want to live, excepting some individuals.
A little bit of anecdata; I’m vegetarian and I donate blood as often as I can. I just had a blood test done recently and my hemoglobin levels were excellent. I take a multivitamin because it costs essentially nothing and gives me peace of mind.
@@msteg96 Phytates and oxalic acid are not affected by cooking which is why spinach in particular is useless for iron. I was vegan and vegetarian for 14 years and plant based for 20 more and fought the effects of deficiencies and toxins the entire time. Once I eliminated plants, all health issues vanished and training capacity improved dramatically.
Animals defend themselves before getting in our mouths, plants fight us after.
@@terraflow__bryanburdo4547 Neither is superior or inferior; heme is more readily absorbed but can have harmful effects as well, non-heme is more poorly absorbed but it's not difficult for most to get enough iron by choosing certain foods, or taking eg a cheap multivitamin (which would also generally cover iodine and some vitamin D).
The antinutrients thing is total nonsense unless you're eating raw spinach by the bucket

Also, I don’t eat liver because of the pathetic state of the cattle “industry”. I work hard where I live to find meat without added hormones and grass raised/finished etc. Their metabolic health is so poor… I don’t want to consume a sick animal…especially their liver!!

Although I dont agree with most of his opinions about optimal diets I really support his takes here and about supplements in general.
Tbh it’s the first good supplement video I’ve seen in the climbing community.
These kind of popular supplements are way too overpriced for far too less benefits. His advice basically reflects what I say when asked about this:
Just eat a fairly nutritious and balanced diet (I don’t agree with his die hard carnivore approach, everyone can choose for themselves what „balanced means) and use occasional useful supplements if needed.
These are:
1. Fish oil supplements or Vegan alternatives
2. Vit D supp basically all year around if your northern/middle European or from comparable regions (occasional blood work can help here)
3. Iron if needed after blood check
4. Protein supplements with sufficient aminos if your chosen diet or food habits leave you with no efficient amounts. But that is not necessary by any means depending on your lifestyle. But it’s completely okay too, preference.
(5. Creatin, situatonal)
Even if you would buy all 1-5 and use protein powder extensively, you will pay less than half of AG1 monthly price while having MORE health benefits (since AG1 does not include D, Iron and sufficient protein).
Overall I really like that somebody with a bigger following says how it really is. I’ve hated on AG1 for this exact reasons from the beginning and only got backlash cause everyone’s fav climber, athlete or influencer said something else about it.

@@thenayancat8802 That's the funny thing with iron - so many desperately need more of it, and so many desperately need to get rid of a load! It's odd there's such a variation across populations.

@@Noneymar1 Good Lord! A nutritionist is literally someone with a degree in nutrition. No, you can’t just call yourself a nutritionist or a dietitian.
A little research on what they are is easy to accomplish. Everything discussed in this video are things they are specifically trained to comprehend and teach to their patients.
I just started seeing one 2 months ago. I see her for an hour, once per month, fully covered by my insurance. It’s been life-changing. Seeing her along with having full labs done by my primary care doctor (and then emailing the results to my nutritionist), has put me on the right path.
And something else you may not be aware of is Google Scholar. Use it rather than regular google when it comes to researching health. I learned about it from my nutritionist. It’s where you can find real unbiased information from health professionals.

I think most eat it raw like a tartare but it's pretty risky (bacteria, e-coli), a bit like eating raw unpasteurised eggs.
Yes, how much can I eat while being sure I stay below the "overdosing" you mentioned? (I heard I should limit my dog to 100g a week or something)
Dave, follow up question if I may, do you see any benefits in alternating/mixing frozen liver with frozen beef heart? Was thinking on the Coenzyme Q10 and is a meet I can get as easy as liver, maybe on a 3 liver - 1 heart ratio, not sure if worth.
Will give it an honest try with 10 grams in the morning and 10 in the evening most days (barring life happening), while checking blood markers every 3 or so months why my physician. Hopefully its enough to see a difference and will keep an eye for excess vit A, iron or copper.
@@elidstroem .5 oz a day or 3-4 oz a week will keep you far under vitamin A toxicity while you gain many of the benefits
Isn't there some delicious pate made with duck liver that is used in french cooking? Wonder if you can just have that with toast... Though i reckon it would be bloody expensive

I had worked in the grass growing industry for several years. When creating nutrient regimes for athletic fields I had to frequently decide what fertilizers to use and what 'micros' to add (Micro vs Macro nutrients are what chemicals plants need in what amounts - macro nutrients are things like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium the npk of fertilizers and the micros are things like boron and sulfur and such).
I realized that human nutrition is very similar in the sense that once the primary needs are met, adding more is just a waste of money. Supplements are only useful when deficiencies exist, but once corrected, more can actually be harmful ( see Sir Douglas Mawson's likely vitamin A poisoning due to eating too much dog liver).
It costs way too much to isolate and make bio-available essential nutrients that generally it is the case that good food is just cheaper and easier to obtain. So supplements are either cheap and have low actual nutrition (or use low bio-available forms) or are crazy expensive in which you might as well just source the food. If you can't afford the food, odds are you can't afford the viable supplements. Reality sucks sometimes.
There are no solutions, only tradeoffs.

I wonder if it is as much a competitor because they also just tell you that you can use your own supplements in quantities that they recommend without buying anything. But could easily be a marketing tactic knowing that most people won't buy on their own.

When it comes to AG1, my suspicion is that they're just using trash greens that's been cut off and put to the floors, or at least just the not useful parts for other businesses, and then they turned that into an overpriced business.
My doctor said that if you’re not deficient in any vitamins and minerals, there’s really no reason to take any supplements
With the exception of vitamin D. IMO
