I'm pretty sure he was a privateer in 1991 - he returned to driving a commodore, but he didn't return to HRT till 1994 - after the split with Holden in 1987 till 1993 he ran his team on a much lower budget, which makes this even more impressive when you think about it. He still kept his Mobil sponsor, but still a fraction of the budget compared to the bigger teams. We believe it's likely a mixture of running an enclosed airbox and additional muffler/s in the exhaust to keep it quieter for tracks like Amaroo and Oran Park. For Bathurst, compared to the ATCC the exhaust was exiting just outside the front passenger door as opposed to the rear passenger side door where the exhaust had been exiting for most of the year. Since it was much shorter it would likely explain why it was so much louder and combined with running an open style air intake with an air filter over the intake stacks, it made for quite a noise!
