My true hero and legend. Peter Brock.. miss you.. shattered when you left us...had a vk Brock running gear...best car ever..thanks for all the great cars and memories mate..
Loved the HDT cars growing up in the 70's and 80's. The Marlboro sponsorship had no effect on me to take up smoking either.. LOL. Looking forward to the Brock documentary tonight.. Great work ABC
I saw an interview with Peter Brock where he said they brought in the VK in mid 1984. They then changed to Group A for 1985. That means these VK big Bangers were only raced for 6 months.
... in fact they only raced for the final three rounds of the 1984 Australian Endurance Championship, each of which was won by Brock ... at Sandown, Bathurst, and Surfers Paradise.
Good to see that they did not blur out the Marlboro out . Unfortunately they sold the die cast models without the signing and you had to find someone that did the decal on line to make it authentic .
"This is a road car that's been modified to race!" Exactly, which is why the racing back then was so watchable and entertaining. Unlike today. With these cookie cutter Mustang/Camaro clones running around the track. Bathurst 2024 was like watching paint dry. I miss the days of real touring cars! 😥
Good explanation thank you. I certainly could relate to the cars and drivers back then given the race cars being more closely related to the road going version.
1:55, the 'Group C 'area, started in 1973. 4:56, issue 76, Australian Muscle Car Magazine, page 41, states that many of the performance parts had been removed and replaced with road car parts. Such as a 253 engine ?????
I truly believe it's cause of this car that the vk is so popular these days there seem to be a he'll of a lot more vk than vb vc vh around and tributes to the Marlboro vk are a lot there's a lot around
That car was actually sold and raced in the UK and wasn’t located for some time. I believe it had some damage to it at various times as well. There was also a lot speculation around this one being the actual Brock car.
@@obiemichaels9675 Brock drove that ex-Harvey car at Goodwood Festival of Speed in 2005. That was a great sounding car & must have been running a lot of compression.
amazing to see its still running the points dizzy in 1984 when all the road cars were HEI from around 1980 on wards, maybe its running the l34 twin point dizzy ? i watched this race too and all the hipe , last of the big bangers pre race ect did not mean a thing to me, how time and history make things a big deal now, to how it was back then , RIP BROCKY
the 25 car , the john harvey car , went to england , where it was turned into a sports sedan . it had a hard life , was returned to australia , where it was restored as 05 . have a look at the cruddy headlite covers on the museum car , the various paint chips and marks under the bonnet , to see it was the 05 car , in its unrestored condition . thats a quick quote from a feature in AMC , where they went thru the car with forensic like precision . comparing pictures of small details from the cars back in the day to match them up .
@@rebeccakenworthy4623 Larry's 93 Bathurst winning car still had the Holden 304 engine. He stuck with it as long as he could, until the Chev was mandated

so does my brother , his is a white special 5.0, brought from phil brock at berty street when peter up graded to the newer model, i think peter changed cars like we changed shoes
Those rear tyres are not the correct size. They were far taller. The plastic engine was used right through GpA and up til 94 in Supercars. Larry was the last one using them.
...I'm pretty sure that the blood alcohol limit was .08 when it first came in. Some other fact checks seem required. Don't use Brocky cheaply no matter who.
It was .05 in Victoria. I was a kid but can remember it pretty vividly. casr.adelaide.edu.au/T95/paper/s29p1.html#:~:text=Since%20its%20introduction%20in%201976,be%20in%20excess%20of%200.05%25. Not in Victoria it wasn't. Since the 1970's it has always been .05% as far as I am aware. Before that, I remember blowing in the bag and the crystals turning green, which meant that the car was locked up at the side of the road, and I had to find another way to get home. I was only 300 metres away from home and was allowed to drive the car the next morning after picking up the keys from the local police station. There was no way a copper could tell how high the blood/breath - alcohol percentage was and no conviction was ever recorded. Oh the good old days!!
Hang on, he's incorrect about the 05 being reference to the Blood Alcohol Level allowed when driving... I think he's forgetting that up until the early to mid 80's the legal blood alcohol limit was 0.8!!! I'm calling B.S on that story
You are wrong . In Victoria it was .05. Brock did a lot of Road Safety talks in his early days & adopted the number for cars he drove. I believe other states may have had different limits in those days . I knew a couple of people who did lose their licences . No sympathy even back then.
Group C was great. Wish it would come back!
This is when racing was relatable.. win on Sunday sell on Monday!

Well done on presenting this car. I must admit this car and the car beside it are my two favorite race cars of all time.
I went there around 1999 / 2000 and you could actually sit in that car and get a photo. I was lucky enough to do just that... very surreal experience.
Back seat?
Group C was fantastic. Group A was the beginning of the end really. 77-84 the golden age of Bathurst.
Thank you for this story. Incredible car. They all had real soul, unlike todays racecars, (V8's, F1 , etc)

My favourite but I like them all cheers great video go Holden Peter Brock still the king of the mountain 👍🏁

What a memory.
Greatest bathurst commodore of the 80s in a 1-2 finish to farewell them.
Loved the group C era.
When there was real racing. The Brock 05 machines XU1, L34, A9X ,VC, VH and VK still make the hairs on back on back of neck stand up in 2024 .
Wicked car , love the wide body look. Marlboro man smoking it up lol👍. RIP Brocky O5
100 Marlboro logos and no ashtrays. Almost an Alanis Morrisette lyric.
I remember watching this car race, would like to visit the museum sometime.
Do it. It is fantastic. They have a tonne of touring cars, but also a tonne of bikes, and lots of interesting history about all of it.
A Great insight Brad !
Love that vk , I have a smaller picture of the last of the big bangers, signed by Peter and larry
I have one signed by all four drivers. A professional photo, framed of the 1,2 finish. And it's sizeable 🙂
And the vk stands out among all of the race cars.Won Bathurst 1984 under group c rules and 1986 under group a rules.
what a beast! Long live "The King"

Just remember where to keep them, under your t shirt sleeve like a real '80's Aussie!!! LOL
I quit when they hit 15. Now…. Woah. How does anyone afford that?
Three wins from four starts. Pretty, pretty good.
Love that vk, besides the A9X, it's the best looking race car
Actually resembled cars we bought rather than a brand

End of the australian engine my bum.The aussie engine was used until "93"
peter barber Perkins started the ‘94’ season with the engine, not sure how many races tho. Bathurst ‘93’ was a fantastic and very fitting farewell.
Most went to chev except for lp and some privateers i recon the racing died with the privateers
End of the real one, lead burner, after that it was unleaded. Never the same.

Can we see that little RX3 next?!! BRAP!
Didn't group C start in 1973?

Painted

That was a chev based motor I thought, weren't they all running 304 Chev's by then?

Real cars, real chassis’s, real racing.
Is this the car that was at Goodwood?
No
What gear box?
Love it 💯
Hey spotto a joes garage sticker!
What is the rocktober sponsorship please?
The car was sponsored by the 3XY radio station, Rocktober was a promotion of rock music for October.
2SM did Rocktober here in Sydney too. I think they were affiliated with 3XY.
What happened to the original engine?
Did it have a supercharger at all?
Nope
The car shown how come it has the no25 mirror on the driver's door

The plastic engine was used right through GpA and up til 94 in Supercars. Larry was the last one using them.
What is a plastic engine?
@@armorgeddon it's something misguided people who like chevs call the Holden 5litre. And the tyres are correct
I was going to say the same thing. All they did was turn the 308 into a 304 to get under the 5 litre capacity for group A.
Peter champion bought alot of brocks cars and had a museum in yeppoon how many of them where genuine i dont know
there was a dispute with him and Bathurst council over who had the real car. I think the council car was verified as being real.
Why is the vk orange
DayGlo Orange was the colour being applied to the F1 McLarens back in the day, also sporting Marlboro sponsorship.
