  • So many surprises this week. A little more hay to rake and bale, a new calf from our milk cow and some snake wrangling from LB. Never a dull moment around here. Stay tuned, it's almost time to combine some barley and get fields ready to re-plant. Can't stop, won't stop. Hope you're all doing well and staying safe. xx, The Bernards

Don't y'all worry bout replanting that sorghum sudan. I planted some in dry, but firm sand one year in mid July. Didn't rain for 2 weeks. Then a shower brought it up the first week of August. It made 85 (1000#) bales on 17 acres. The seed was triple crossed, 13,000 seed/lb at 12lb/acre. Got a good thick stand. It was chest high when I cut it and very fine stemmed. Made it very heavy. You might consider pearl millet also. Cows love it! Just a thought. Good luck!

Tractor time is a good quite time from the troubles of the world.... I put 1000 hours a year on a JD 4440 quad range when I farmed cotton from 1978 to 1983. Dreamed up things to build and wrote songs and poetry while driving tractor.... Kept a note pad and pens in the 4440 all the time......

When the luck of bad flooding a few extra bales is worth the trouble. I had to chuckle to myself when you commented that you were successful in communicating with hand signals as I recall when I was a kid and he would wave or motion for me to do something with the rake or to come down to the opposite end with an empty wagon as he had a full one.i sure hope this tropical storm doesn't cause you more headaches, good luck!👍

I am with LB , I let black snakes live around here also . My granddad started farming in the 1920's thru 1960's , he saw a lot of change. none of his tractors had a cab , so it was hot and dusty all the time . his first tractor was a 1941 B john deere . not many tractors at that time , but he got the only one the dealer had because he said he would do custom work for his neighbors , he ran it around the clock with my dad , uncle and himself taking 8 hr shifts each . I like seeing your kids around new life starting. I think it will help give them a respect for all life here on earth.

Go with Motorola. I farmed 38 years and used two way radios all those years beginning with Dad. The Motorolas were used 12 years and never failed and we farmed 26 miles from the head quarters. They were the “FM” type meaning frequency modulation, we had a federal license to use. You will never regret it.

@@ThisFarmWife_ Motorolas are good, no doubt, but ICOM are also among the best.Have used one for many years. Check that you are using maximum power (Watts) and have the other settings correct.. Get high gain antennas for them. A little longer than the ones you have. What frequency are they on. It matters in the hills.

another vote For Motorola we have used them for years riding 4 wheelwrs and have had clear reception... A quick search I was able to find a 3 pack for $71.99 on Amazon.... And the just a note the battery packs that come in these Little radios would last us 2 or 3 easy hours A-day....( Your mileage may vary depending on the active talk time).....Best of luck.

By the way, you would have to take them in and get them programmed. Most of them are used for police and fire and you would have to have them tuned to a general use frequency. But they would last forever. The one I’m carrying I’ve had for 15 years.

Those are called electrical transmission towers. Also, here's an alternative to the Motorola's and business band radios or CB radio, (which I think could serve you well also). All it takes is a few weeks study. Amature Radio, more commonly known as HAM radio. You can get your Technicians (entry) rating and operate on 2 different FM bands (2 meter and 70 centimenter). Lots of channels within those bands. There's a small charge to take the test usually $15.00 and the radios are very economical. An inexpensive hand talkie is under $60.00. HAM is what the weather watchers use to report storms and also what all the "preppers" use. These operate very well under adverse conditions too. As we operators say: "When all else fails, HAM still operates". HAM is VERY versatile. Mark KEOVWH. BTW, I agree with you on the hay. Like the 'ol saying, 50% of something is better than 100% of nothing.

Get a side band radio that you can mount in each auto tractor or whatever . They will work for more then five miles . Now they require an antenna but that is simple

Another thoroughly enjoyable video Merdie ... always enjoy them so much! Thank you so much for all the time and effort you put into your vids, sharing so much of your life with so many of us who envy and adore you!
BTW, that was a Black King Snake, harmless, non-venomous, but great to have around as they actually hunt and kill venomous snakes! - especially Copperheads and Rattlers! But they're also great rodent 'pest controllers' around the barns. Y'all stay safe and thanks again!
