Ah yes the wonders of the airless paint sprayer. Blows everyones mind when they see how fast you can bang out a house the first time. If you are blown away by the simplicity of a paint sprayer you should see what does the pumping on our $4500 graco rtx 5000 texture machine. There's a chance you've seen the mechanism with your background but it blew me away. I took the cover off cause we just got it and I was curious, what makes this texture machine be able to literally blow through a house even multiple apartment units in no time? A wheel with two shafts sticking out that squeezes the same type of vinyl or whatever tube that goes to the gun in a U shape in one direction. Thats it, I thought it was gonna be some crazy screw drive or..... no a wheel and two free spinning shafts do all the pumping by squeezing a tube. Genius, blew my mind, I absolutely was not expecting that. If the tube gets worn out its only like a foot or two long, has large brass fitting disconnects and is replaceable, I mean come on....
Peristaltic pumps are neat. They're pretty common in medical machines where you don't want the pump itself to touch stuff like blood (dialysis and transfusions come to mind), and are pretty accurate for applications where you need measured quantities, since the volume between the rollers/wipers is a constant.
I'm a professional painter and I've been painting for 20 yrs Graco by far makes the best pumps and that's all my boss buys. We have some pumps that are $50, 000 for spraying liners or tanks. As long as the pumps are well maintained I have never had one break on me

At work I’ve rebuilt quite a few of the garco airless sprayers although they are more industrial. The one is a bulldog 180cc and the other is a xtreame 45 290cc there upper pump runs on air but the lower is similar to the one in your video. We use ours with 2 part epoxy paint and a common problem is your lower ball getting stuck. They are built like tanks we had the bulldog for about 25 years now and it gets used daily. Every few years rebuild the lower pump and your good to go.

Painters are some hard partiers! I ised to install commercial cabinetry, and on more that one jobsite there was a crew of painters, who had 5 gallon buckets they sat on to work that also held warm Shaffer beer. That beer was 25c a can, and was nasty cold so I cna only imagine what it was like hot...
I’ve owned the same spray setup for years now… it’s a great unit and in a pinch figured out the absolute best way to clean it… old fashioned nowadays …powdered cascade dishwasher detergent.. slap a bucket of hot water under her add some cascade and run it through the spray hose and gun for a bit … then thru the bypass..shut her down and leave the suction and return lines submerged in the bucket and throw the spray gun in there overnight… in the morning rinse it and get back to painting
@@skm9420 Good for storing also cheap but when spraying you wanna use TSL on stroke rode just fill the wetcup I've never had that problem with my Graco ultra max ii 490
Consumer models (magniums) dont have a lubricant cup like the pro models. Your not able to properly oil them. This is true for both manufactures I repair for; Graco/Airlessco and Titan/Wagner. For storage. What I have my customers do is clean the machine well and then pump mineral spirits in to the complete system for long term storage (any time frame greater than 1 week). There is a product you can buy called pump saver which mixes with water. Its essentially windex and antifreeze. I prefer mineral spirits due to it protects the steel and wont let it rust as well.
@MrPitjoey or clear the schmoo off the tip with your finger. I've seen the paint filled finger to prove it. I've never seen anybody cut the 'ears' off the rack before. it signals the orientation of the fan and protects the tip.
I was going to say the same. I have operated, sold, and repaired these machines all in separate professions. I do have one comment on this machine as it relates to other paint sprayers. GARBAGE.
"Hex shaped cap bruise on your forehead to match the mushroom shaped one." Gah!!!!! That one killed me AV!!! I'm going to have to work that one into my repertoire of witty retorts and insults.
After flushing out your airless sprayer with water if using water based paint it's a good idea to run some mineral spirits thru the pump, especially if it's going to sit awhile before using it again. Nothing beats a through cleaning, including all filters.
Reciprocating dangle arm reference noted and appreciated. Could you do a full review on a turbo encabulator at some point. I would love to see how they work.
"weird flex.. ah, but okay". That fittings set is the ultimate flex. And I'm sure you paid for all of that out of pocket. XDXDXD Those fittings are worth more than all of those Wira, Wiha, Kniptex, Snap-on, name any brand you want. German, Japanese, USA steel select items. Whatever career you come from either paid insanely well or rewarded insanely well. Having a shop-room with uncountable brass fittings is truly awesome. That secret stuffed away collection of fittings is worth far more than your tool collection that I've seen.
I have a few graco sprayers and they don't have a relief valve they just have a pressure transducer to shut the motor down. The problem is always on the suction side.
When you get done painting and pumping it out with water, pump mineral spirits through it for storage. It won't freeze up that way when it gets cold and protects the check balls/seals.
My family is owned and operated a residential interior painting company for the past 40 years we don't spend the time to fix those graco's we just buy a new one because it's cheaper. They start there life out as a fine finishing tool and then as they age they end up outside spraying decks and fence posts when they totally fail usually they sit at the shop for several years until somebody decides they want to try to repair it and take it home.
7:30. My dad had his Gisholt lathe in the background of his snowcat mod blog, and one guy called him out for the flex, had to explain to my dad what a flex was. Nothing nicer than being able to walk straight up to what you need and grab it. That's a beautiful hydraulic fitting book. The enigma of what your profession is pesters me. "What does he do to need all of these hydraulic fittings in specialty connectors by the bookshelf-load? And why did he leave his wrenches underneath of the pipe assembly he was painting Orange?" I'm sure I'll never know.
@AvE With my Graco I have found that running water through it and the hose is the best. Then to store it long time the pump armor with auto motor oil is best. The oil keeps the first check ball from sticking. I also have found that on interior work with cheaper paints backrolling is key for a good finish, so next time I do interior paint I will spray the corners then buy the rolling attachment for between the corners.
There is a ball in the fitting rt ate the end of the clear hose. U will get fund built up and it will cause it to not prime. When you put it away for the season run it till the water is clean. Then run a lil thinner in it. Make sure u dump the pressure. Do not store it under pressure
Holy shit, finally something I can actually real world relate to! In a former life I was a graco repair tech. that button with the finger pokin looking pictogram is to unseat the lower check ball if it sticks. If that doesn't work you can also give em a whack. with the thumb detector. The packings that run along the piston shaft need to be lubed with Throat Seal. It's an oil with a light acid. My guess on the heat discoloration is probably because the wet cup at the top of the pumping element (inside the two slots) wasn't filled properly at some point and the sprayer was run for a while.
You're lucky! Mine didn't even come with a doobly do! But, hell, there were two Whatchamacallits in the box, so I'm not gonna cry over spilk milt. WHOOOSH to the spelling bee 🐝 contest winner!

Oh no! You forgot the most important part. The warning label has a instruction for a surgeon, in case a 200 lb. Gorilla injects the paint into his body. 😲
Mine came with a card you're supposed to put in your wallet while using it, with the same medical instructions on it. Definitely gave me pause before starting it up.
Damn skippy, you need a surgeon. I work for the company that manufacturers the actual hose for it and I think we test 'em to like 6000 PSI before they pop.
Finally something I know something about. Dont have much to add though so I'll just say, this is like the ryobi of sprayers. Cheap, it'll do the job and it's good for homeowners but not good enough for professionals and won't last as long.
The "pumping element" is called a fluid section. When you buy the higher end ones, they come with a spare fluid section for free, if your paint store likes you.
Only thing with these sprayers, is to pump through paint thinner after every couple uses. Also oil up the piston, it should be reachable even when everything is put together

The paint was so excited to see ya it got all over your hat
8:15 Use Throat Seal Liquid (TSL) prevents paint and coatings from drying onto the displacement rod and packings extending the life of the pump
I just use 100% anti freeze
I run a hydro pro iv.
Meh tsl is just any old oil. Lol
It’s nice to watch a video where you get to actually speak well about a well made tool.

Such a vibrant shade of grey.
Finally AvE is talking bout something I am an expert on. This machine can inject paint into your body. It can lead to amputation
the 'short circuit' is to get air out of the line.
@MrPitjoey or clear the schmoo off the tip with your finger. I've seen the paint filled finger to prove it. I've never seen anybody cut the 'ears' off the rack before. it signals the orientation of the fan and protects the tip.
YES IT CAN !
My brother and I used one of those sprayers to paint a few basement ceilings and couldn't be happier with how it chooched
That design also keeps your paint circulating while you're not using it. Very good.
After flushing out your airless sprayer with water if using water based paint it's a good idea to run some mineral spirits thru the pump, especially if it's going to sit awhile before using it again. Nothing beats a through cleaning, including all filters.
In my few years of using these, circulating a few gallons of paint rover through it clears it up pretty well
I'm sure this airless sprayer was cleaned out in the environmentally approved green way like all other airless sprayers always are😉
I had an airless lacquer sprayer and always cleaned it out by spraying lacquer thinner into the Great Outdoors’ air...
@@markiangooley just adding a protective coating to the trees!
ya with a little diesel fuel.
You forgot your closing line Mr Ave🤣. Must have been distracted by the Shmoo on your nice hat!
Beefy and simply the way things should be !!! Best statement I’ve heard in a min
Or two...
Every time you say, "focus, you fuck!”
I feel like you're talking directly to my ADHD. 🤣
Enjoyed your content as always. Thanks
He's an injection molding industrial maintenance machinist pattern maker and PLC technician.
& the second one is called alcohol
The navy taught me the two most important things about painting. Those being one coat for dust and two coats for rust.
Guess that's why the USN has the lowest ASVAB Test score requirements for entry of all the military services ..
These seem cool and way better than the air pressure manually operated ones I have used. 👍
Wow that's some serious Graco knowledge. .. All I can add to that Is if he used the right hvlp tip diameter he'd increased area coverage ..
Is that the fitting bin in your shop, or the parts store?
Cause either way, weird flex indeed.
ellomdian Exactly my thoughts too! 😁😁
Much nicer than my HarborFreight version.
You're lucky!
Mine didn't even come with a doobly do! But, hell, there were two Whatchamacallits in the box, so I'm not gonna cry over spilk milt.
WHOOOSH to the spelling bee 🐝 contest winner!
we use a 270 i think graco power painter at work to do hydro static testing can get 2500 psi to 3000 on some.then if we have other things higher then have dedicated pump i have went to 15,000 psi on
Never judge a man till the you have walked a mile in his shoes. Then who cares he’s a mile away and you have his shoes.
Worked a temp job at Graco in Minneapolis picking small parts. So many o-rings!
I used to be an interior paint salesman, and was really good at telling people what paint, rollers, brushes and tape they needed but oh boy I hated actually painting and was terrible at it.
Down here... that's why we have Mexicans. 📉😁📈
@@JTA1961 Correctamundo (hows my spanish?) I don't know about paint but the stereotype for drywallers is that it's such a crappy job that the mexicans don't do it, the guatemalans do it.
"Focus you fuck!" My favorite part of the video.
they are made for easy soaking in the xylene. its worth dedicating a bucket of it for easy cleaning then pump it through
Wow ave always breaks down tools so good but no mention of the packings or diaphragm that actually pumps the paint
Hands down, best freaking channel on u tube!!
Every time I rent one of those sons a beaches the damn thing needs 2hrs of cleaning before I can use it!
I've had a wet dream or two about your collection of fittings
Those fluid injection injuries are no joke though.
Finally something I know something about. Dont have much to add though so I'll just say, this is like the ryobi of sprayers. Cheap, it'll do the job and it's good for homeowners but not good enough for professionals and won't last as long.
But at least they never changed their battery platform.📉😎📈
The "pumping element" is called a fluid section. When you buy the higher end ones, they come with a spare fluid section for free, if your paint store likes you.
Basically the same pumps we use for steering on our boats.. just a little bigger and stronger and different in every other way! Lol
Only thing with these sprayers, is to pump through paint thinner after every couple uses. Also oil up the piston, it should be reachable even when everything is put together
If you unscrew that outlet fitting that the gun/hose connects to, there is a small filter in there that can get clogged up and cause problems.
This is why I Grayco product's, they're built well and easily serviceable!!
