    my favorite method to tame a runaway diesel is to dump Co2 fire extinguisher into the air inlet pipe, that way later, if there's a fire you're really fucked...

      I’ve been told a side benefit to unleashing the fire extinguisher contents into a runaway diesel intake is that it works great as a upper cylinder and valve cleaner as well.

    Remember to put oil in it. Our competitor didn't and during a power outage they reported that their generators were running and more diesel was being delivered, shortly before going completely dark. Turns out, they never ran their generator tests long enough to discover that there was no engine oil in them.

      Potentially putting 300 amps onto 12 AWG/20 amp wire isn't what I'd consider "safe" if you don't understand Arc-Flash Fault current and don't have the required PPE. It's DUMB.
      Enjoy your permanent sunburn when it occurs without having safety equipment handy. A dead short in one or both of those heaters would have ruined his day, big-time (did you see him check that before he energized them ?)
      Will it "short" would have been a BETTER title.
      33 year high voltage industrial maintenance electrician with zero safety incidents during my career.

    When you have air in the fuel line of a diesel, cover the air intake while cranking the engine. This creates vacuum and sucks the air bubbles through. Then it fires right up.

    Old city transit trick. When changing the fuel filter, fill it up with atf, makes it easier to prime and the fluid will clean the injectors

      Great for 7.3l power stroke too. Some shops/owner's swear by a quart a month in the tanks too. Your mileage may vary. 😎👍

    Block heater is hosed backwards. It works through thermosyphon. Bottom radiator hose T delivers cold coolant to the bottom of the block heater, hot coolant bubbles out the top to the engine.

    had some real fun this fall after a piston change on the ol john deere inline 6. disconnected the sediment bulb to prevent someone from trying to start the turd hauler and completely forgot about it once ready to start. thought there was air in the lines so we cracked the injectors to bleed only to entirely fill the system with air. a fun 3 hour bleed of the whole thing was just what the doctor prescribed.

      That's no-load speed, put something on it to harness the pixies and she'll settle right down to 60. I think ours at work go about 62-62.5 Hz no-load.

      @@timothybarney7257 also, those gauges are rather subjective. Verify the output with a good meter before trusting those gauges.

      It’s the rpm of the engine that will set the Hz. So, like said above once it’s loaded down a little it’ll be fine. If not can just adjust the rpm until it is.

    Never underestimate the dangers of a runaway diesel engine. While I haven't witnessed this directly, I have been witness to the aftermath. 'twas on a (very new) fishing boat and the engine was connected to a three phase alternator that supplied almost all of the AC requirements on the boat. Normally the engine would run at 1500 RPM, three phase 415 alternator with 240 AC from phase to neutral. Not sure how fast the engine ended up before it turned into shrapnel, but ALL of the electrical equipment downstream was turned into junk!

    How can you expect it to pull straight when you’re using a bent chain? Plus when your inclined planes are made to Whitworth specifications, that does help either.

    Some of those standby generators from warm southern areas can be real sweet deals, there are people that actually think that because it's 70 or 80 degrees that the block heater isn't needed, they don't get many hours on them before you hear the knocking.
