I totally agree with this. When I feel anxious to start something I just force myself to push through it, even though it's unpleasant sometimes to start, once you get going it's less scary than you thought. - Fellow filmmaker

This is legitimately excellent advice. There are plenty of times when I have motivation or inspiration right when I need it (an upcoming conference deadline, paper revisions, or even an idea for a new project), but it's discipline that can get you to keep working through the tough days. I'm not quite there with the discipline, but I'll get there eventually. Thank you, Burnie for this post.

I swear to god Burnie's logic behind Discipline/Motivation is flawless. This is the reason why I get up and go to the gym 6 days a week. The reason why I drive to go get something for someone when I'm in the middle of a game. The reason why I watch what I eat. Learning how to work without motivations, and streaks.

Burnie, this is why I'm a fan of you on the podcast. You always break things down to a practical and applicable level. There is no way that anyone can feel motivated every day of their life, or even every week of their life. But that organization and discipline will really pull someone through a task.

Having gone to therapy several separate times for help with my ADD (and diagnosis of it), I came to the same conclusion about motivation: it isn't the root of the problem, it's just how it rears itself. The root problem for me is self-discipline, I have troubles getting myself to do anything. Once I realized that, I realized a lot of what Burnie said in this video comes with it. I realized that, as much as I hate even the idea of it, I function best on a schedule.

  • @videomasteronee

Really been struggling on how to stay motivated recently. All through my first year of college I was watching a lot of motivational videos that I used to keep me pumped to stay proactive. Burnie just flipped my switch in my head. My whole life I have been trying to rely on motivation as an emotion and I would come through days where I thought "what's the point?" I realize now I need more self discipline rather than relying on those "short bursts" of emotional motivation.
I want to be a successful percussionist someday. I believe that those words of wisdom from you Burnie will help a lot on my adventure. Thank you man.

I like Burnie's comments on discipline, specifically "the streak." I read an article about a man who has been running for over 800 consecutive days. He said something similar that it took the discipline of getting up and just making yourself do it that has allowed him to continue running. Good luck on this new chapter Burnie!

This reminds me of the quote by Chuck Close,"Inspiration is for amateurs -- the rest of us just show up and get to work" As an artists, this resonates with me, and what you said. It is important to be disciplined enough to get done what you need to everyday, not just when you feel like it. Otherwise, nothing would ever happen.

    • @arronkluz3819

I think the reason why is that Funhaus is a part of rooster teeth similar to how Achievement Hunter is while cowchop is just part of the let's play family more similar to the creatures. so they don't technically own Cow Chop.

Really did need this. I'm a third-semester freshman at UofL studying mechanical engineering, and even though it isn't a 'creative'-type major, I find myself sometimes without a desire to learn more; and unfortunately, this lack of discipline has bled over into my physical/mental health as well. I've found myself without discipline, and that has led to a severe lack of confidence. This really has helped enlighten me to do better in my studies and to learn how to devote time to certain things in my life. Thank you for this video

Lady Donum I think it's because it's finally something real and honest. most "motivational" stuff out there gives off that feeling that it's just some spirit that you have to wake inside of you where this says no, it's really learning how to get it down without that spirit which I agree is a million times more inspiring

  • @Starterman

I really find this topic about motivation super interesting, especially because there is a lot of psychology behind this. The special thing about motivation is, that it helps you to do hard things in periods of time. So it is completely correct what Burnie is talking about, you really shouldn't rely on motivation itself. What you can use motivation for, is in the beginning, when you start something new, that's usually when the motivation is the highest (for most people), and use that motivation to create a habit for that specific tasks. When Burnie is talking about discipel, then it is actually about breaking down overall goals, down to smaller sub-goals. This helps the mind to better start and finish smaller task and with the combination of gamification (by not breaking his streak) does he actually both give and remove motivation.
    Awesome Burnie!

I am going through a bumpy patch at the moment, trying to get my life sorted and on track with what I want to study for the future and what pathway to go on. And recently have been struggling with "with finding motivation" as other people have told me.

I've noticed my form of getting stuff done is that I absorb myself in what I'm doing. I often will write around 6-8 chapters of a book I want to write or get the rough draft of a short story or animation all at once. Then my issue I have is that I'm always so full of ideas and things I want to do so I never really ever finish any of them. My attention span is about as durable as a twig.

I think that was some of the most valuable advice I've heard in a long time. Thank you.

Burnie is awesome!! I also agree, motivation is fleeting and makes no sense. Stay discipline!
