That was a great format. It slows the whole thing down without having to pause and you see it done twice, once fast, and once by a beginner. Excellent.
I’ve never successfully spliced double braided rope. Tomorrow I’m following your instruction on 10mm rope (no idea what that is in imperial measurement) which is thinner and I suspect a lot harder to do than your 12 or 18mm. It is definitely the best instructional video I have seen on splicing. Thanks so much. I’ll let you know how I go.
Nope. I just couldn’t get the core to slip back past the exit at the first spot where I pulled the core from. Two cores just will not fit. At the one time. Am I using the wrong braid? What is the trick?
Really great instruction and patience. The first time what you are doing doesn’t seem to make much sense but as you see the core and splice disappear you can see the results coming. I loved how precise she was being measuring fid lengths and tapering!😊
a homemade twisted wire fid is narrower than my Samson tubular fid, and works well for the TIGHT spots. Using Both types is MUCH easier. GREAT VIDEO INSTRUCTION HERE. Thanks.
Thought it was a good video. Interesting format. Mostly commenting because of all the negative and complaining comments about the video below. If you are using unused rope it should be that easy. If you are trying to splice rope that has been used, is stressed, is dirty etc. it will be difficult and maybe at some point impossible. Good job.
I don't know what to call it, but there's a more traditional sailors way of splicing, where one is basically unravelling the rope and plaiting the two back together. The technique on this video is best suited to the slippery synthetic rope, particularly with an outer sheath. There's certain to be loads of tutorials here on TH-cam.
To use the technique in this video, it would have to be a double braid rope, which would be suprising for a cotton rope. If it is a different construction than double braid or 3-strand, it likely isn't spliceable.
Outstanding tutorial, I would buy supply from you, I will working on 13 mm double braid polyester arborist rope, any items number for the right rope fid, the whipping cable and the needle? Are you shipping in canada? Thanks
The part starting at 16 .25 is just imposssible. Putting the core throught he first empty part of the cover is OK, but once you get to the point where the rope is íntact -full core and cover - at 17:09 no measure of force or coercion or milking more cover from the end will get it a full fid length as in 17:39. There must be another way of doing it.
omgash lol when does it ever take 3 entire seconds to pull out a core?? also when does the last step of milking the core back into the cover ever happen that easily. it would be nice to see real world splicing, good theory, but not practical as it doesn't address issues like taking hours just to pull the core out of the cover, then pulling the line to get the core to go back into the cover is almost always too big to actually fit back inside the hole, and the core bunches up as you pull, it's never as easy as these videos make it out to be.
Passing the core back through the cover from A to past B a fid length ... you make it look so easy ... I used a bloody hammer and it was so tight the core came detached from the fid, leaving the core stuck and unworkable further !!! Had to abandon and cut off the half done splice. You must be using special easy rope. Would like some real world help without the jolly music !!
It's easier to mark the cover but wait to cut ot out the strands after you run the cover through the core. We pull out every 5th pair to taper but whatever works for you I guess.
Meaning the space is too thin to pass through a double core and a fid with tape on it. There has to be a technique for this but none of the experts on videos will explain it. Very strange
I have watched so many videos of this splice. Not ONE explains HOW to pass the fid and rope through. In reality it is impossible see 17mins on your video. Too thick by far. Rope comes off inside. It would set someone asside from the rest if they can only explain HOW to pass this fid through the space that is clearly too thin!
That's exactly the problem I have. At that point you have the core and cover and that has to fit in to a section that already has a core. That means you have 3 times the original inside the outer core. I just can't get it all in
Milk a bunch of cover towards that tight spot until the cover is slack there and it will go. What Evan doesn't mention is that used rope makes this splice difficult to almost impossible.... it is possible but you need to move the cover around alot to bring some slack into play
I have watched both of your videos 100 times i've wasted more rope you're not telling us something you can't do it the way you're doing it no way no way can you do it you're tricking us or something it can't be done you should take your video down
The key is to ensure you have the correct FID diameter. The last step of feeding the core is easier if you use a smaller diameter FID BUT ensure you use the lengths of the correct FID. It’s difficult but works well. Very hard the do the very last step of pulling everything back into the rope.
The lasting the woman does is incorrect at the end. The stitching goes through both sides. She did it between the two ropes. The instructor did it correctly.
That was a great format. It slows the whole thing down without having to pause and you see it done twice, once fast, and once by a beginner. Excellent.
More people need a Jess in their tutorials! 😂 It's so helpful having someone ask the same questions I would.
Finally a video that worked for me! I had trouble keeping up with jess but so glad she is there. Thanks again
Great video...the teaching technique of showing us once, and then having a novice do the same thing, is very effective. Great job.
Watching her make all the mistakes I made learning to do this was oddly satisfying. Great vid! Thanks!
We love the way you teach this via a team… super effective and helpful. Thank you!

Without a doubt the best video on double braid splicing. Thanks Great job!!!
Y’all did a very exceptional job and demonstration
Outstanding video!!! I was skeptical about the dual demos but this approach is really, really helpful. The best splicing video out there! Many thanks.
Good job guys, I love that both of you are doing it together. It reaffirms what you're teaching 👍
Really great instruction and patience. The first time what you are doing doesn’t seem to make much sense but as you see the core and splice disappear you can see the results coming.

Video helped me immensely! Appreciated the format!
Thanks so much, lovely job and instruction.
Very good video, explanation! Thanks, Andrew
Going to try this! Shopping for rope now! Thx!
Good job, Jess!!!

That was very helpful thank you for sharing.
*Parabéns pela explicação e vídeo. O ensinamento foi bem valioso*
Thanks for the vid. It took a minute or two to finish it off due to 2 internal cores.. but got there and it looks good. 👍
Great tutorial.
Why do you taper the cover? What is the reason behind it?
So there isn't a big lump under the cover
Just a realization that made it a whole lot easier for me to follow the process: MARK-letter is on the cover. MARK-number is on the core.
Great catch!
Just attempted my first splice. Got stuck at putting the core back in the cover. Had to cut the splicing needle out. Any tips to avoid this?

Where can I purchase a fib for a 3/4in braided rope
Can I get it form you
if so please send contact info
Thank you
How do you extract the core so easily?
Can I splice in an eye in a 5/8” thick COTTON rope? The core doesn’t slide easily…but I need a loop at the end…not for sailing;)
Thanks!

Which wrap it if its already locked?
Artistic licence? Antifray
Easy on a thick rope like this but much harder, if at all possible on small sizes.

To complicated mate it’s impossible your an expert don’t think everyone is the same by watching a video mine looks a mess 😊
>Mark 2 on the core is one short fid, mark 3 should be one short and one long fid from mark 2.
The music is killing me...

Wire fid
I've read on forums that people use a smaller fid or they use a coat hanger and pull it through instead of push.
It's laborious, but try working the rope section with your hands until everything is feeling limper and looser. It won't be quick.
Do you folks know the difference between a “rope” and a “ line?” Might need to clean up the vocabulary. Just saying.

Watched the short video first then the long one and did it just fine
